Welcome. It is a great birthday wish. Take this one or two healthy habits at a time and do this at your own pace.
As to shin splints, there are some excellent Spark articles written about it, but I have found that walking slower and with shorter strides prevents this. I work up gradually to longer strides and faster pace and with out pain if I do this in the beginning. This is a 5 week program so starting slowly will really help you get past the initial pain.
I consider myself a walker all the time, but when I'm in good shape and walking like I want to, my arthritis doesn't bother me as much and I can run a bit on my walks. This is about learning how to do a little more.
My inspiration was an 84 year old woman who had been doing a local marathon for many years. The entire family participates. Her husband, who was 86 also ran the marathon. If she can do it, then I can do it.

I am also destined to be a walker ... anytime I try to do any more than that my ankles and knees protest severely :/ So I'm going to do this 5K challenge walking and am going to try to at least pick up the pace or add some incline to make it more of a challenge once I actually manage to do the 5K in the first place :)

Hello all! Yesterday day was my 39th birthday. The wish that I made as I blew out the candles atop my Italian Cream cake was to be happier and healthier. So as I lounged in my hammock, sipping a sweet, frosty Pina Colada, I came across an article that mentions Sparkpeople. I rolled out of my comfy spot and created an account right then. I admit that I did not do ANY physical activity yesterday and I ATE yummy, rich, fattening food. However, today is a NEW day and I am committing myself to follow through on my birthday wish. Only I have the power to do it! FYI: I am the mother of three (the oldest is getting married this September), a wife and I work full time. My life is busy, but that is no excuse. And If I use it as an excuse, just slap me back to reality! I walked a 5K a few weeks ago and finished with a time of 52.11. I had a reat time doing it! I have attempted the 'couch to 5k' program several times and can not get past week 2 due to shin splints. Apparently, I was made to WALK only. I am glad to be here!
