Welcome. It is a great birthday wish. Take this one or two healthy habits at a time and do this at your own pace.
As to shin splints, there are some excellent Spark articles written about it, but I have found that walking slower and with shorter strides prevents this. I work up gradually to longer strides and faster pace and with out pain if I do this in the beginning. This is a 5 week program so starting slowly will really help you get past the initial pain.
I consider myself a walker all the time, but when I'm in good shape and walking like I want to, my arthritis doesn't bother me as much and I can run a bit on my walks. This is about learning how to do a little more.
My inspiration was an 84 year old woman who had been doing a local marathon for many years. The entire family participates. Her husband, who was 86 also ran the marathon. If she can do it, then I can do it.
