Hi everyone! My name is Kristen, I am 27, have two beautiful children and a wonderful husband! I have been so out of shape for so long! Time to get back into better shape! My kick off is to train for a 5k on Sept. 12. I will not be walking this one to set a personal best because I plan to walk with my young adult daughter who will be 8 weeks post broken ankle & broken elbow. We did a 5k together 2 years ago and she was a good encouragement to me. She has been through a lot lately, besides this accident she was involved in another accident in 2014 with broken: tib, fib, ankles, heel & foot. After recovering from that we hiked a mountain trail in TN where we pushed each other. Now, it is my turn to encourage her in a 5k. The 5k is at an amusement park and our reward is fast lane passes. I am excited to do this with her and other family members!

Thank you so much for having this, my name is Harmony and I'm trying to lose weight to make myself feel better and to make sure I can go longer without getting any of the hereditary diseases that run rampant through my family. I do yoga and am in the process of finding a good training course to learn how to teach it as well. Since I started going on this website about 3 years ago I've lost 20 pounds which is super impressive for me.

hello team! i want to be a runner. :) its so freeing... you can let the wind carry all your stresses and troubles right off your shoulders. you can pound your worries into the concrete with each step furthur. i love the idea of running. i am not very active so this walking program will be a good start. then i will progress into run/walk intervals and then hopefully i can train to be a runner. i think its just wonderful that sparkpeople not only encourages people to be active but also provides the resources to learn HOW... I currently use my elliptical about once a week, and my ballet bar 2x weekly as well as some yoga on the weekends :) now that the kids are back in school, yayyy, i will be walking to take my youngest... its great to get outdoors and be one with the trees and the birds and the lizards and the bees and the morning sunshine. this was my first day of my first week. this week will be easy, the challenge comes next week when i have to start walking more than a mile :) fun fun

Hi everyone! My name is Sherri. I am 43 years old. I have had a rough couple of years and recently got tired of it and decided to take control, or as much control as I could. I decided that, no matter what anyone said, I could be whoever I wanted to be. I decided I wanted to see if I like jogging and I decided that I would like to jog 5K. Now I am really overweight and have been for a while. I am also really out of shape. I think that it would be better for my body and joints if I start out with walking a 5K and build myself up slowly. So, here I am. Ready to go for it, tomorrow morning. I like mornings best.

I completed this training in 2014 but want to do it again. I started the intermediate walk/jog training but my core needs strenthening before I can do it justice, so decided to sneak back into this one as a repeat and try to improve my core strength and of course my time.

Hi! I'm Linda and I just discovered the joys of 5k walking last year. My first race was the Refuse to Abuse 5k at Safeco Field in Seattle. I liked it so much I committed to completing a 5k every other month for the second half of 2014. For 2015, I committed to completing a 5k ever. I haven't been able to improve my time over a 19 minute mile yet, but I am working on it!

Hello, my name is Cyndi and I am a former runner. I have ran many 5k's, 10k's and two 1/2 marathons. I had to stop running about a year ago due to bad neck pain and tingling down the left side of my body. I was diagnosed with cervical degenerate disk disease. On January 28th I had an anterior cervical discectomy & fusion (ACDF) on four disk in my neck. My recovery has not gone as well as I expected. I am still not sleeping well at night. My throat And neck hurts by the end of the day by just doing routine things around the house.
I really want to get back to running but I am going to start out slow and Walk.
I look forward to the support from this team.

Beautiful picture! I have been here awhile and can honestly say it keeps me accountable and I have steadily lost and kept up my walking and weight workouts! I also swim. As you are close to my weight I would encourage you to swim everyday if possible because it is easy on the joints and will relax you. This helps me through my other workouts too. Hi! My name is Janice and I have been working out and walking for about a year. I hit a plateau about a month ago then stated working full time. That broke my plateau so I started walking at night to relieve stress and relax. I hope to do the 5k walk for March of Dimes this summer. My son and I did it several years ago then I lost about 165 pounds and I want to try it again. I am training for this now. Used to be a runner but knees can't take much more than a few miles a few times a week which is what I'm trying to get in so walking is sort of my cross training exercise. I joined this team because I still have trouble getting myself to do something the days that I don't run and I thought this challenge might encourage me.

Hi I am 72 years old, 50 lbs overweight. I just happen to find this team on my start page. I have set small goals for myself, first one is to lose 10 lbs by Nov 8, I started in Sept. I will have to admit not doing so well, lost lb, then gained. I am a stress eater and my husband had to have emergency surgery and was in the hospital for a week and that didn't help my stress. He is getting better slowly but may need another surgery. Exercise does help me and I think setting this goal beginner 5k walker will help me stay on track. I am active in church and red hats. Do go out with friends to eat lunch. Need to make better choices there. I have been married to Don for 50 and 1/2 years. We have 3 great adult children, 10 grandchildren ranging in ages from 5 to 27 and 2 great grandchildren 2 and 5. I basically want to stay healthy, get into a more healthy eating and exercise for older people so that I can continue to get around and be self reliant and enjoy my remaining years.

Hi,

I am a 64 year young woman, who is 40 lbs overweight. I have health problems that challenge me considerably. One think that's easy for me is walking. I just don't like non-goal walking so I'm hoping to find a local or virtual walking program here. I'm hoping the structure will help me discipline me to walk. I want to loose weight and be healthy a lot. I know It's going to take work, a lot of work. I presently do Tai Chi and swimming, but it is not enough, I need to do more. I'm hoping adding walking will do the trick. If there's anyone from Miami, let me know. Maybe we can get together an walk a 5K.

Hi All, I am 62 yrs and 25 -30 pounds over weight and I want to be healthier. I have been walking a mile a day 5-6 days then I just stopped. I have not walked in two weeks going on 3 weeks. I don't know why I just stopped!! But I am getting back on track first thing in the morning. I desire to walk a 5K. Hi. I am new to the team and my name is Georgann. I am a grandmother of 7 and a great grandmother of 1. I am 62 years young and still working. My husband and I raise miniature horses so I get a lot of walking. Recently I signed up for a 5K walk for a local clothing store called Linda's Closet on September 13th. I know that I am late in joining the team but I need all the help I can get. Being 60 pounds overweight but otherwise in good health, I am challenging myself to do this. I also have a 5K walk on September 13th and October 5th. I know I can do this but need the encouragement.

Hi All! I've just rejoined SparkPeople and this team. I'm walking a 5K on 9/21 and started the training plan today. I haven't run in so long that I'm sure I would wind up on a YouTube video and see myself on the morning news one day when it goes viral! I'm not ready for that!!!

Hey everyone, I'm very overweight and out of shape, but I've always wanted to try something like this, and hopefully continue to increase my pace and distance to be able to run someday. I look forward to getting to know some of you throughout this journey. I'm going to advance to the next least difficult level, of walking/running after these 5 weeks are up, until I can at least run a 5K!

Hello everyone. I just joined the team. Running for me is not possible, however, I am now able to walk again. So many people think about walking. I am Chelly, 32, with a really bad back. I stumbled upon this team while helping my mom join SparkPeople. Earlier this year, I joked with my kids that I would walk a 5K by the time my husband gets back from his year remote. I was doing pretty good until the heat kicked in (Las Vegas desert, first year here) and my back decided it wanted to start spasming again anytime I did long walks.
I am still waiting on getting to my doctor (earliest appointment available was the end of this month) to start physical therapy, but I am tired of the limbo I have moved into. Looking at this program, it looks like something I can do in the mean time. Who knows, I might actually pull off walking a 5K lol

Hello, team. Have had both knees replaced, the second one in March of this year. Stumbled on the team by accident and it is just what I was looking for! So excited! emoticon My adult children and I have also decided to do Bloomsday (a BIG race here in Washington state--12K, I think) next year, so this is a good training start. Plan on doing my first virtual 5K on July 21, then one every couple of months after that. May even throw in a virtual 10K somewhere. On the road to health and happiness....

HI Team ... I've been getting slowly better for the past 3/4 years. I can finally WATP for at least 2 miles and want to boost to 3 miles 3x/week. I just turned 66 years old, had a doulbe hip replacement and some back issues. I originally started off with Chair Exercises to get stronger. Now I realize there's no excuses in the summertime to not walk. Hard to do outside as I'm extremely allergic to trees (live in the country) and certain grasses. So I will be doing mostly indoors unless I drive to town.

I'd like to bump this plateau I've been on for almost a year. (I stopped exercising a lot in Jan. when my exercise center closed and swollen feet/legs - but again, no excuses).

Any way feels good to move and get stronger. Looking to also support others on this journey!

I am back after attempting to do this back in February. I completed Week 1 then stopped. Life got crazy. I am working on trying to lose those last 8 stubborn lbs to reach my weight loss goal. Walking is my favorite form of exercise. So having a program to follow helps me to focus on getting my exercise. I have signed up for a 5k walk June 21, 2014. Good luck everyone. We can do this.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a 68 year-old grandmother, but still working, still active and in very good health. I joined SP in August of 2011 and did my first 5K Your Way then, as a runner. Later I followed my doctor's advice and switched to walking teamed with other aerobic activities. But last July, during a self-defense course, I tore my Achilles tendon and although it's now "healed," the scar tissue is thick, and it gets very sore when I walk more than about a mile. But the more I've walked, the farther I've been able to. Still, because it doesn't feel good, I've been wimping out on doing it like I would like to.

New day! I just signed up to do a walking virtual race, so now I'm training for it. Wish me luck!

Happy Monday to all. I am Sarah and recently returned to SparkPeople. A recent survivor of lung cancer, I joined this team since my goal is to participate in a local 5k Lung Cancer walk/run - hopefully, being able to walk the 5k. What a wonderful group of people! Just reading your introductions has been inspiring.
My name is Margaret and I live in Ontario, Canada. I've been on Sparkpeople for about 3 months and have found it a great help. I focused on my eating habits first, then about a month ago added in a commitment to a minimum of 10 mins/day of some form of physical activity. Walking is my preferred activity and usually walk for about 45 mins at a rather slow pace. Now I'm ready for something that's a little more of a challenge. This program looks tailor-made.
I have back and knee issues that need to be managed, but I think I can work through this program if I pace myself. I'll be starting today.
It's nice to be walking along with others. Good luck everyone.

Hi, everyone! I am new to this team and just trying to get back into SparkPeople on a regular basis. Between November 2008-May 2009, I was on SparkPeople all the time, lost about 75 pounds and built up to running two miles straight for the first time in my life. I even ran a 5K with only two, one minute walk breaks. That summer, though, I injured my foot, and fell out of my healthy new habits. One wedding and two babies, later, I am right back where I started weight-wise, and am very discouraged. I need some encouragement to get back to exercising regularly and ideas to help avoid snacking now that I am a stay-at-home mom. I need to get healthy so I can keep up with my precious babies!

I just started my training for a Wounded Warrior 5K May 26th. My first ever and this is my first post. I have been with SP a couple of years now but I have done much better with the program since my DH has become a SP member as well. He is the one encouraging me to participate in the 5k. Hi Everyone,
My name is Laura. I live in Southern Indiana. I work as a cashier and am a mother of one and a wife. I currently weigh 222 and I started out with this journey in March 6th weighing 233. I wanted to do this Virtual 5k because that it has always been a goal of mine because I can do it without anyone seeing me do it. Last Thursday I joined the local YMCA and they are assisting me with doing the strength training and also helping me with keeping track of my total when I walk.
I have asthma and severe migraines and just want to finally do something for myself. My goal weight is 150. I am wanting to do this not only for myself but for my daughter so I can play with her when she goes on her bike I can catch up with her. So here I go out on this trip.
I have completed the goals for week 1 and just hope that I can continue with the program without my body going against me.
I wish everyone else good luck and may they do awesome on their job walking or running. Keep up the good work.

okay, I am not sure I am to reply or start a new topic but I am back on Spark and hope to do a 2 or 5K on Memorial Day weekend; they are not yet taking registrations. People tell me I can do the 5K, but..I'm not so sure. I am just starting a new Spark life today! have been walking, sometimes up to 5 miles a day..NOT all at one time, however.. I can do 2 to 2.5 at one time.
I am heading out now to go for maybe a one mile walk, maybe more!

hmm can a pedometer lie? just back from my walk and supposedly did 2.3 miles in 48 minutes! I can't believe that. Maybe all the walking we did on vacation has paid off; I didn't think so as we walked and talked the whole while back then, but..maybe I am moving toward a 5K. unbelievable.

Good for you! That's the way to start your program. I tried doing the walk/jog program first and ended up with shin splints and foot pain...so I put that on hold until I finish the your way walking program. I am in my second week. I am doing a 5K walk in June.

Hello, all! I am Isabella. While I was attending college last year, I walked a great deal around my campus. However, since being home (November 2013) I have been fairly inactive. Aside from walks around the grocery store (which are sometimes quite a workout), I have fairly little activity in my daily life. I am trying to increase my activity levels. I want to lose about 100 pounds. I figure if I start with the walking challenge, I will be working towards the beginning of the walk/run challenge and eventually the full running 5k challenge! Started walking again yesterday. One foot in front of the other really seems like an easy thing, till about 20 minutes and I think 'gee wonder what's new on Pinterest' - - - kept focus, even if it was really tough today, and finished my walking goals.

You said you have 100 mini goals? That seems like a lot to me. I joined sparkcoach and it has really helped me with managing goals and staying on track. They have great advise and information. Most of the coaching is video's, there are some that are transcripts to read. I'm not perfect at logging in, but once I'm here, I could spend hours browsing around!

I am trying to fulfill my 100 Mini Goal list which includes being able to work up to walking three 5k's and 3 quarter marathons (6.5 miles) by the end of this year. Hoping this program will help me get started walking again after a long winter of inactivity and keep me accountable.

Hi Everyone! I used to walk to college and back, about 1 mile each way, but that was quite awhile ago (8 years!). I recently started using my treadmill Mondays-Fridays to help lose weight and decided to try training for a 5K walk. I'm not even close to being able to do one within the recommended time (1 hour from what I've read), but it's given me a goal apart from general weight loss.

I've just finished week 3 in the program and did the 2.25 miles in 48 minutes and 54 seconds. I'm probably going to repeat it a few times since 2.25 miles seems to be my limit, but we'll see how I do on Wednesday. I don't have an actual 5K walk I'm training for, so I have no deadline. Any advice on increasing my speed would be appreciated.

Hi Everyone! Kitty here...
I started the 5k walk/jog program...but kept back sliding because of shin splint and feet problems.
I found some great info/exercises for shin splints and the foot pain problem (thanks Nicole!)
I have officially suspended that program and started here with the 5k walk. My actual race is in June so, hopefully I can build enough stamina and leg/foot strength to go the distance without any problems emoticon

Would love to have people friend me with their support and progress!

F8CONE8 - I am 63 & my goal for a 5k is 45 minutes. My pace has been 50-55 minutes & I'm usually one of the last to finish. Don't worry about embarrassing yourself. I've done walks in Washington & Oregon & the other racers are so encouraging. It's great just taking part. I set my own goals & don't worry about others (usually) :)

I'm Molly...live in south central Washington State...joined SP in 2000 when I turned 60. Have done 5ks, an 8k, & a 10k. Haven't done one for 2 yrs,, so I'm starting over. BUT...I have started.

hi all. my friend asked me to join her in a 5k race next month and i thought it would be a good training challenge for me, even if i dont do the race. ive had some health issues lately and have put on a couple extra pounds so this would help in that area as well. im training on my treadmill and currently do 3.1 miles in about 64 minutes. im doing that 3 days and alternating with a 45-minute walk for 6 days total.

My name is Carol and I recently retired after 48 years! I am very overweight and hate dieting but love walking. I would like to do a 10K run in September but for now I am more interested in doing a 5K walk as a start. It has been very rainy so the last month I've been confined to short walks and mall walking but I want to up my game.

I am interested in knowing what a respectable time would be for a 5K walk? Any ideas? I really hate to embarrass myself being way too slow. I am in exceptionally good health even with the weight!
