Hello Team,
I am Chelly, 32, with a really bad back. I stumbled upon this team while helping my mom join SparkPeople. Earlier this year, I joked with my kids that I would walk a 5K by the time my husband gets back from his year remote. I was doing pretty good until the heat kicked in (Las Vegas desert, first year here) and my back decided it wanted to start spasming again anytime I did long walks.
I am still waiting on getting to my doctor (earliest appointment available was the end of this month) to start physical therapy, but I am tired of the limbo I have moved into. Looking at this program, it looks like something I can do in the mean time. Who knows, I might actually pull off walking a 5K lol

Hi, my name is Regina. I am a relatively fit and active 49 year old woman. I joined this team as a way of challenging myself and staying creative with exercise. Meeting people with similar goals is always a benefit! Now that I fall into the empty-nest category, I am challenged with putting the same amount of attention and love into meals just for me that I formerly put into family meals. Not that easy! I love this website and know this is going to be a great challenge.

Hello! I am Karen from Georgia and I have just joined the team. For years I have jokingly said I am allergic to exercise/sweat so this is a huge step for me. Looking forward to getting to know some of you.

Hello, team. Have had both knees replaced, the second one in March of this year. Stumbled on the team by accident and it is just what I was looking for! So excited! emoticon My adult children and I have also decided to do Bloomsday (a BIG race here in Washington state--12K, I think) next year, so this is a good training start. Plan on doing my first virtual 5K on July 21, then one every couple of months after that. May even throw in a virtual 10K somewhere. On the road to health and happiness....

HI Team ... I've been getting slowly better for the past 3/4 years. I can finally WATP for at least 2 miles and want to boost to 3 miles 3x/week. I just turned 66 years old, had a doulbe hip replacement and some back issues. I originally started off with Chair Exercises to get stronger. Now I realize there's no excuses in the summertime to not walk. Hard to do outside as I'm extremely allergic to trees (live in the country) and certain grasses. So I will be doing mostly indoors unless I drive to town.

I'd like to bump this plateau I've been on for almost a year. (I stopped exercising a lot in Jan. when my exercise center closed and swollen feet/legs - but again, no excuses).

Any way feels good to move and get stronger. Looking to also support others on this journey!

Hi Team
I am back after attempting to do this back in February. I completed Week 1 then stopped. Life got crazy. I am working on trying to lose those last 8 stubborn lbs to reach my weight loss goal. Walking is my favorite form of exercise. So having a program to follow helps me to focus on getting my exercise. I have signed up for a 5k walk June 21, 2014. Good luck everyone. We can do this.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a 68 year-old grandmother, but still working, still active and in very good health. I joined SP in August of 2011 and did my first 5K Your Way then, as a runner. Later I followed my doctor's advice and switched to walking teamed with other aerobic activities. But last July, during a self-defense course, I tore my Achilles tendon and although it's now "healed," the scar tissue is thick, and it gets very sore when I walk more than about a mile. But the more I've walked, the farther I've been able to. Still, because it doesn't feel good, I've been wimping out on doing it like I would like to.

New day! I just signed up to do a walking virtual race, so now I'm training for it. Wish me luck!

Happy Monday to all. I am Sarah and recently returned to SparkPeople. A recent survivor of lung cancer, I joined this team since my goal is to participate in a local 5k Lung Cancer walk/run - hopefully, being able to walk the 5k. In my recent past, I was a member of a running club in the Chicago area, training for a marathon when my husband was (surprisingly) transferred. I'm hopeful this training program will be beneficial in gaining the capability to participate in this local walk. emoticon

What a wonderful group of people! Just reading your introductions has been inspiring.
My name is Margaret and I live in Ontario, Canada. I've been on Sparkpeople for about 3 months and have found it a great help. I focused on my eating habits first, then about a month ago added in a commitment to a minimum of 10 mins/day of some form of physical activity. Walking is my preferred activity and usually walk for about 45 mins at a rather slow pace. Now I'm ready for something that's a little more of a challenge. This program looks tailor-made.
I have back and knee issues that need to be managed, but I think I can work through this program if I pace myself. I'll be starting today.
It's nice to be walking along with others. Good luck everyone.

Hi, everyone! I am new to this team and just trying to get back into SparkPeople on a regular basis. Between November 2008-May 2009, I was on SparkPeople all the time, lost about 75 pounds and built up to running two miles straight for the first time in my life. I even ran a 5K with only two, one minute walk breaks. That summer, though, I injured my foot, and fell out of my healthy new habits. One wedding and two babies, later, I am right back where I started weight-wise, and am very discouraged. I need some encouragement to get back to exercising regularly and ideas to help avoid snacking now that I am a stay-at-home mom. I need to get healthy so I can keep up with my precious babies!

Hi Everyone,
I just started my training for a Wounded Warrior 5K May 26th. My first ever and this is my first post. I have been with SP a couple of years now but I have done much better with the program since my DH has become a SP member as well. He is the one encouraging me to participate in the 5k. I have found good information on this forum in regards to walking techniques, stretches and encouragement. Look forward to participating more maybe even adding a picture to my profile once I figure out how to do it.

Good Morning. I am starting fresh and thought this team would be a good place to start. Good luck to all of us on this team. I don't know much about how being on a team works but I am sure I will learn along the way.

I am 52 years old, have 4 beautiful teenagers and a wonderful husband. My husband and I will be celebrating our 1st anniversary next week. Exciting times and with winter finally over I am ready to get outside and start walking.

Hi! I am here to become more fit and to lost the final 33.5 pounds to my goal weight. I like to walk anyway so I thought this might be a great team to join.

I have a kayak race coming up in August and I want to be at my goal weight so I can zoom thru that water.

Hello,
I am Myra and a 42 year old. I live in Denver. I want to start jogging. I started this program to walk my way to 5k then there is a website for C25k which is a beginning jogging. I want to do the walking program, walk to jog, and jogging program on Sparkpeople than try the one on that site which is extremely faster pace.

Hi. I'm Noel. 36 years old from Northern California. I have never been a runner and I never enjoyed running but now I really want to try. I am currently walking 2.6 miles 3x a day. I have lost 34 pounds and have about 166 pounds to go. Would love to be able to work up to a 10k.

Every journey of a 1000 miles starts with one step.

Hi, My name is Cheri and I joined this challenge because I used to be a runner before I got pregnant with my second child who is now 6 months old and I am still trying to lose the baby weight. I figured this was a good place to start up again.

Good Afternoon All,

My name is Wanda and I live in Minnesota. I joined this group to challenge myself. I want to work my way up to a 5k walking by September. I have discovered that sitting at a desk all day seems to pack on the pounds, so my daughter and I decided we would take this journey together.

My daughter will be taking her journey at college using the gym on campus, while I will be taking mine at home walking the country roads we live on. I hope to get some good ideas on how to start and what are the best shoes to buy for walking.

Taking it one day at a time!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Laura. I live in Southern Indiana. I work as a cashier and am a mother of one and a wife. I currently weigh 222 and I started out with this journey in March 6th weighing 233. I wanted to do this Virtual 5k because that it has always been a goal of mine because I can do it without anyone seeing me do it. Last Thursday I joined the local YMCA and they are assisting me with doing the strength training and also helping me with keeping track of my total when I walk.
I have asthma and severe migraines and just want to finally do something for myself. My goal weight is 150. I am wanting to do this not only for myself but for my daughter so I can play with her when she goes on her bike I can catch up with her. So here I go out on this trip.
I have completed the goals for week 1 and just hope that I can continue with the program without my body going against me.
I wish everyone else good luck and may they do awesome on their job walking or running. Keep up the good work.

okay, I am not sure I am to reply or start a new topic but I am back on Spark and hope to do a 2 or 5K on Memorial Day weekend; they are not yet taking registrations. People tell me I can do the 5K, but..I'm not so sure. I am just starting a new Spark life today! have been walking, sometimes up to 5 miles a day..NOT all at one time, however.. I can do 2 to 2.5 at one time.
I am heading out now to go for maybe a one mile walk, maybe more!

hmm can a pedometer lie? just back from my walk and supposedly did 2.3 miles in 48 minutes! I can't believe that. Maybe all the walking we did on vacation has paid off; I didn't think so as we walked and talked the whole while back then, but..maybe I am moving toward a 5K. unbelievable.

Nice to meet you! I hope to walk the Color Run in May. I definitely won't be prepared for running by then, but my mom did the run last year and she thinks I'd have a lot of fun with it, so that's my plan. Good luck to you!

Hi Isabella!
Good for you! That's the way to start your program. I tried doing the walk/jog program first and ended up with shin splints and foot pain...so I put that on hold until I finish the your way walking program. I am in my second week. I am doing a 5K walk in June.

Warm Wishes...

Hello, all! I am Isabella. While I was attending college last year, I walked a great deal around my campus. However, since being home (November 2013) I have been fairly inactive. Aside from walks around the grocery store (which are sometimes quite a workout), I have fairly little activity in my daily life. I am trying to increase my activity levels. I want to lose about 100 pounds. I figure if I start with the walking challenge, I will be working towards the beginning of the walk/run challenge and eventually the full running 5k challenge! I hope to make some friends here to keep me accountable along the way.

Started walking again yesterday. One foot in front of the other really seems like an easy thing, till about 20 minutes and I think 'gee wonder what's new on Pinterest' - - - kept focus, even if it was really tough today, and finished my walking goals.

Hi Marleen,
Welcome to the group! emoticon

You said you have 100 mini goals? That seems like a lot to me. I joined sparkcoach and it has really helped me with managing goals and staying on track. They have great advise and information. Most of the coaching is video's, there are some that are transcripts to read. I'm not perfect at logging in, but once I'm here, I could spend hours browsing around!

Hi. I'm Marleen from Salem, MA. I've been a member of Sparkpeople for a very long time but new to this team.

I am trying to fulfill my 100 Mini Goal list which includes being able to work up to walking three 5k's and 3 quarter marathons (6.5 miles) by the end of this year. Hoping this program will help me get started walking again after a long winter of inactivity and keep me accountable.

Hi Everyone! I used to walk to college and back, about 1 mile each way, but that was quite awhile ago (8 years!). I recently started using my treadmill Mondays-Fridays to help lose weight and decided to try training for a 5K walk. I'm not even close to being able to do one within the recommended time (1 hour from what I've read), but it's given me a goal apart from general weight loss.

I've just finished week 3 in the program and did the 2.25 miles in 48 minutes and 54 seconds. I'm probably going to repeat it a few times since 2.25 miles seems to be my limit, but we'll see how I do on Wednesday. I don't have an actual 5K walk I'm training for, so I have no deadline. Any advice on increasing my speed would be appreciated.

Hi Everyone! Kitty here...
I started the 5k walk/jog program...but kept back sliding because of shin splint and feet problems.
I found some great info/exercises for shin splints and the foot pain problem (thanks Nicole!)
I have officially suspended that program and started here with the 5k walk. My actual race is in June so, hopefully I can build enough stamina and leg/foot strength to go the distance without any problems emoticon

Would love to have people friend me with their support and progress!

F8CONE8 - I am 63 & my goal for a 5k is 45 minutes. My pace has been 50-55 minutes & I'm usually one of the last to finish. Don't worry about embarrassing yourself. I've done walks in Washington & Oregon & the other racers are so encouraging. It's great just taking part. I set my own goals & don't worry about others (usually) :)

I'm Molly...live in south central Washington State...joined SP in 2000 when I turned 60. Have done 5ks, an 8k, & a 10k. Haven't done one for 2 yrs,, so I'm starting over. BUT...I have started.

hi all. my friend asked me to join her in a 5k race next month and i thought it would be a good training challenge for me, even if i dont do the race. ive had some health issues lately and have put on a couple extra pounds so this would help in that area as well. im training on my treadmill and currently do 3.1 miles in about 64 minutes. im doing that 3 days and alternating with a 45-minute walk for 6 days total.

Hi, I am new to Sparks. I needed to start a walking program for my health and my weight. I thought this would be a good place to start.

My name is Carol and I recently retired after 48 years! I am very overweight and hate dieting but love walking. I would like to do a 10K run in September but for now I am more interested in doing a 5K walk as a start. It has been very rainy so the last month I've been confined to short walks and mall walking but I want to up my game.

I am interested in knowing what a respectable time would be for a 5K walk? Any ideas? I really hate to embarrass myself being way too slow. I am in exceptionally good health even with the weight!

I am a 53 year old housewife who works part time. I have been slowly working on getting back on track to lose weight and was looking for an exercise program I felt I could accomplish. I would like to lose a pound a week until April 1st and then make new goals. I think 1 pound a week is doable. I'm about 80 lbs overweight right now down from 100 several years ago. I've kept fooling myself for some time thinking I could lose weight without exercise and obviously it doesn't work. The last couple of weeks I've been doing strength training and staying with it. I've lost 2 pounds now and would like to up what I do for exercise. I have an energetic dog and feel the 2 of us could do this together.

I am 55 and I am 64 lbs over weight! Thought this walking challenge would help keep me motivated to keep walking and lose the weight! I like challenges and need to see 30 lbs gone by my birthday in may and also want to do a 5k walk then! My training starts today! I used to do some amatuer boxing many years ago till family and job came along!

Hello!
I am joining and excited. Although I would like to jog, it seems that it would be smart to walk a 5K first. I do a lot of gym classes and weight training, but I have never done anything in the form of a race. Any advice will be welcome! I am also a member of BLC24. I have been a member of sparkpeople for a long time but I have not been consistent enough to see the results I want. I look forward to meeting more people here!

Hi,
I am working towards our local Rice Run at the end of April.
The last time I tried running, my knees hurt so bad that I thought that I might have damaged something when ice skating.
Anyway, long story short. No damage. My knees still hurt sometimes. So...
I am starting out with brisk walking of 1 mile/day until I can walk 3 miles @3 mph pace. Hopefully, I can then start the walk/run training.

Hey!
I'm also from Florida! I don't like traditional exercise much, but like walking. This is perfect. I'm glad there's a program like this. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and a bad back. This is a great way to exercise and get healthy. I hope to drop some pounds, too!

Hi my name is Dawn. I am a single mom of 2 great kids, a 21 yr old boy and a 11 yr old girl. I find myself in a position now where I am wanting to motivate my children to have better eating habits and better health overall. I have joined this program to get healthy and back to where I can enjoy time with my kids and do the things I enjoy more than what I have been. I did the 5 km walk for breast cancer in October and felt I could do better so thought I would try this program to help me. I have signed up for 2 5 km walks/runs one is December 7 and one is January 1. I plan to continue doing this and hopefully work my way up to 10 km runs and possibly a half marathon. i will be starting on Monday, October 28.

Live, Love and Laugh
Each day is a new beginning,

Dawn

I am not starting just yet. I have joined this group a few times but It never goes any where. I work noc shift and watch my kids during the day so getting out of the house to walk is next to impossible. luckily my grandma is letting me borrow her treadmill so I will be able to walk at home while watching the kiddos. I am supper excited and am just getting ready in advance. good luck to all and congratulations on starting/the progress of your journey!!!

my name is Candice. My plan is to be able to walk a 5 k on my birthday in January. Yesterday I about cried when I walked a full mile on the treadmill. 10 weeks ago I was using a power wheelchair for anything over a 100 steps.

I have a great physical therapist, a great pain specialist, and a ,miracle in my pocket. I have not been able to walk a mile in 20 years. I dont know if my body CAN do 5 K, but I am about to find out...

The plan right now is to add 1/4 mile a week to my distance. On my birthday I will wear a tiara and a purple tu tu, and walk 5 k. One of my girlfriends will be wearing a pink fairy costume. So far, I have 3 friends who will walk with me on my 55th birthday.

Candice and her dog Leah.

Last year as my birthday passed, I mentally challenged my self to complete a 5k. As the date approaches and I have been so unmotivated to walk, then I saw this challenge. I believe it is divine intervention. Telling me to get up its not too late. The 5k is 8 weeks away so here I go . . .

Hi - This is my 2nd time around on this Challenge. I will not jog, nor will I run, but I do net help with motivation, which is why I'm back.
After I completed the first 3k, I did a faceplant during a routine walk with dh. The only permanent damage was to my ego, and I have new scars on my knees, and upper lip.
I am looking for to my second 3k.

Good Morning,

I need to get motivated to eat well and lose weight. I know I can do this, I've done it before and kid of fell off the wagon so to speak. But today is a new day. I figured that this program would be a good way to get started. And best of all, it's not so cold out yet that I can't get out and walk. I look forward to getting started. Have a great day folks.

Good morning,
My name is Michelle and I live in the beautiful Northwest, of Washington State. One of my goals is to walk a 5k and I'm very happy I found this program with Sparkpeople. I started to get serious about walking about July 2012, that's also when I became serious about getting healthier. Six months ago I started to get pains in my left knee, and my Docter told me to take it easy for a little a little bit. So I put the 5k on hold, but I'm doing a lot better and the Docter says it's ok to start walking more now, and that's where I'm now. So I'm really excited to start this 5k training , I need support.
Thank You, Sparkpeople,
Michelle emoticon

Hi, I am Kay from beautiful NC excited about cooler weather and great walking season. I joined the group after reading each weeks plan and realizing this is manageable for me 3.1 miles in 5 weeks gives me some direction and accountability on my walks. God bless everyone on this journey.

Hi, I'm not sure I belong in this team. If there is another one more appropriate for me that you know about, I would appreciate the heads up.

I am disabled. I have a chronic autoimmune disease and pulmonary fibrosis. My doctor prescribed pulmonary rehab for me where I am walking and working on the NuStep. I can walk 15 minutes, but right now only at 1.2 mph. I saw at the fitness center that they have a 5K walk every year. I got to wondering if I could enter that next year, which would give me a year to train and get myself in shape. There's no way I could do it in 5 weeks, but a year...maybe.

I am on supplemental oxygen and get short of breath easily, but exercise is highly recommended for someone like me, so I figure this just takes endurance. I probably can't do it as fast as the other people, but it would feel good crossing the finish line...if anyone is still around when I get there! LOL

Well, that's a little about my situation. I am thinking about the SparkCoach program and maybe I can get some help there for developing a training plan. I'll also talk to my respiratory therapist about a program. Hopefully by next year I will have lost a significant amount of weight as well which will help with the shortness of breath and I would think it would be easier to walk faster when I am slimmer.

Keep Moving!

My name is Judy and I just found out about this team by looking at a spark friends badges and clicked on the trophy for completing the 5 weeks. I already walk more then this at one time in a day so I thought why not join. I have no idea if there are more trophy's or teams like this but I will be looking.

Remember, YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Hi! I'm Brittany. I joined this team in hopes of gaining some accountability! I am a newlywed and my husband and I are starting to talk about a family! I keep telling him I want to get in better shape before we try to have kids so I decided to start here! I am a first timer when it comes to online challenges but am up for the task! I sit in an office all day so it is difficult to be up and moving much but I am hoping this will help motivate me after work!

Hello all, I'm Bonnie. I have recently just gotten back on SparkPeople. Mostly because my office has started a "getting healthy" initiative. Starting Monday we are beginning a walking contest with teams of four people. The team with the most steps after a month get a healthy prize. So, when I saw this program; I thought it would be a great way to help get my steps in. I'm really looking forward to it. Thank you for being here.

I try to walk a lot now. I find that it really clears my mind. I am chomping at the bit right now to leave work so that I can get out onto the track/walking trail. I am happiest when I can get out to see what nature is up to. Angie

Hi I am JO and I have joined this group because I feel this is a great way for me to get back to staying on track. I am entering the 1st responders 1/2 marathon in December and I need the help in order to walk/job my way to cross the finish line.

Life is a journey so enjoy the ride

Just joined the walking training today and I am feeling motivated. I am a very lethargic person who tends to sit and read and write and gets on the internet too much. I hope joining a team will help me get up and move!

Hi. I have been inactive for quite awhile and have thought about a 5k but never thought I could do it. This challenge is doable for me and will get me moving again. emoticon

Hi all! I just completed the Spark People Bootcamp and needed a new challenge. Several years ago I attempted the Couch to 5K program and injured myself by doing too much too soon. Since my exercise consistency has been lacking over the years I decided that if I really want to run a 5K I need to start slow and steady to prevent injury. So here I am. I have to walk before I can run. emoticon

Had hoped I was going to do the couch to 5K thing, but after horrible attempts - and an asthma treatments later, I have come to accept the reality that I am really out of shape! Wow.

However! I did not stop, and did complete 23 minutes with just walking (2.16 km) today!
