Hello, my name is Susan. I need to kick start my weight-loss program so I join this team (yesterday) in hopes of getting and keeping my motivation to lose weight. Although, I walk daily (I wear a Fitbit Tracker) I average about 10,000 steps per day (Im also on the Fitbit team) I still struggle with losing weight, I have really poor eating habits, and I enjoy Rum & Coke (smile) too much. I believe this is a 21 days Challenge? I am not sure, if you have to participate in a 5K walk/run program?

Hi, Everyone - I've just rejoined SP after about 4 years 'off'. I am semi-retired now and realize I want to make fitness a priority. I like several fitness activities including yoga/pilates and 'ballwork', dancing, etc. but walking is so simple and convenient it is the foundation of fitness for me. I also walk my dog which makes it even more fun AND sustainable (she'll remind me to walk her even if I feel like slouching... oh - and my name is Culli and I live in Pa.

Hi, So glad to have found this Challenge. I have been trying to keep track of my steps with walking indoors and out . So far I have averaged 8--10k steps a day but my goal is to average 10-20k a day. Love walking. It is my favorite exercise especially outdoors in nature when the weather permits otherwise I do my walking dvd's. Anything I can do I will do to get my steps in. I also love doing the virtual walks because I am a stay at home mom and barely get out of the house let alone the state. Keeps me motivated .

hi my name is anne and I am a teacher's aide. I am new to this group as I was looking for something different. I love walking but don't do enough of it. I have a treadmill at home and go to the gym but this year I am not sure what is happening but I really cannot get into it and I make up a lot of excuses but I am hoping this will get me to snap out of the rut I am in.

Welcome girls - these challenges seem more of an individual effort than close longterm teams but I want to encourage you and will be watching for your comments and interaction in the week's threads.

I am one week away from my special therapeutic 5K Walk with 2 canes - Learning to walk again, gain strength and have very little feeling in my feet after spinal surgery last Dec. Bit I think I can do this!!! emoticon emoticon

New to this team. Have had a few motivational set backs recently. But I have made myself a promise that in 2018 I will do a RunDisney 5K. To that end, I have to start somewhere, so here I am.

I am new today but, have been on SP since July, 2011. I love the challenges because it causes me to focus on an area of fitness. I love walking but sometimes have trouble with a knee which will always be a problem. Surgery was good for a couple of years and I have exercised according to physician's plan. Most days I can get the 10,000 steps in. I wear a Fitbit tracker and it keeps me motivated to get my steps in.

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Phil 2:3-4.

Joined this challenge yesterday. My name is Charlotte and I am a full time RVer. My husband and I do contract gate house work for the USACE from March to September. Will be 72 this year. Suffer from Avascular Necrosis in both hips but fight the urge to "sit" by walking daily.
Love a challenge to keep me going. My Fitbit goal is 5,000 steps per day but most days, I exceed that number.

On my way.

Good Morning. I am a fulltime homeschooling mom to 3 children. I am also a part time night shift RN at our community hospital. My workout and nutrition habits are sporadic to say the least.

My 11 year old son told me that he would like to do a 5K run/walk. This surprised me because he does not usually like to do anything physical. He has put on quite a few pound in the last six months. I have been wanting to do one also and this gave me the push to get it done. So he and I are doing a 5k on May 14. I'm praying that I can keep him motivated as well as myself.

I related to several of your intro comments - I'm 67 - I need to loose some weight and have set a goal of walking a 5k by June1, 2016
I had a back surgery on Dec 1 and woke with no feeling or movement in my right leg - was in hospital for 18 days learning to navigate with walker and having some feeling return but in the form of horrible cramps - but started with full body walker and progressed to regular walker when I came home and my dear husband presented with my recuperation buddy, a 2.8# YORKIE PUPPY!!! With in-home care and physical therapy I gradually progressed to stability, free use of walker and began training with a cane on Feb 1. March one I parked the walker and use two canes when out of home and one cane in the house...then slow walking with no cane...Right leg still feels like it is asleep from the knee down but progressing to rapid walking with two canes. I feel I need to restart this team because I am learning how it works - but still have my goal set to do a walking-with-canes-5K around our high school track.

hi, been an active sparkler since 9/11/15 dropped 49.5 pounds but can't seam to get the last .5 lb off the make it under 300. So I was looking at the idea of races to train for far in the future like July or August and then I saw one for the Rape Crisis center where my Friend works and I know how much good they do so I decided I'd do it. Only problem its next month and i still have only managed 2 miles at a time.

Hello! I have signed up for my first 5K walk in April. I am a 55yo grandmother that loves children and recognized a couple years ago that if I didn't get in better health I wouldn't be able to enjoy my family like I wanted. So in March 2014 I had Bariatric surgery and have lost 130 pounds since then. Now I am trying to get those last 30-40 pounds off and continue to reinforce a healthier lifestyle by following Weight Watchers smart points plan.
I'm looking forward to finding and giving encouragement through this group.

Hi - I'm Michelle, pushing my 60th birthday (middle of this month). It was time. Time to reevaluate my life. Time to get healthy. Time to lose weight. Time to get off my couch and do something for me. So baby steps, and forward momentum, and a special puppy to keep me going. This program is my next step towards these goals.

I am struggling with severe osteoporosis. I know I need to get going in a bad way in order to use all the foods and bone vitamins I have been taking. Seems kind of silly to be putting this stuff in me and not exercise... I am really eating well these days... now I just need to be exercising well!!!! Hot Dog! Gotta house full of teens and a 21yo, a fat cat (it isn't his fault though) and a hubbie who loves me (something to be so thankful for, indeed!) I am going to give this a go for the third time

Hello My name is Valerie I have decided today that I want to start to run. I have a lot of weight to lose and I never liked running. I heard my supervisor say that she ran a race last week across a bridge and she said that feeling is serenity. I was like Wow I want that feeling. I want to be healthy, I want goals, I want a new me, I want to stay on track so I think running will help me find me. I am going to start walking first. I am also going to sign up for my kind of first 5k I did one before for breast cancer but this is going to be my first official healthy me 5k. I am signing up for a commitment day 5k for January 1,2016. Well let my journey begin.

Good morning. I joined yesterday with the bucket list goal of walking then running a 5k. I have been doing the treadmill several times a week around 45 mins. I am hoping this plan will move me closer to my 5k goals. I have so much fear but know I have to get over that. I think this is just what I need. Have a great day everyone. emoticon emoticon

Hi everyone. I just walked a 5K yesterday, and was the last one in, at a time of 1:20. I made it - but my feet are aching so much today I'm barely hobbling around. So I need to build up before I do another one.

Hi folks! I'm Jayne. I had been walking over 5K everyday this Spring & Summer till I guess I had really over-trained and I hurt instead of enjoying my walks towards end. I had to quit as just making my walks shorter wasn't working. I have started over and did the Walk You Way 30 day challenge and am back to a safe 40 minute walk ( a little over 1.5 mile for me). Want to work back up to the 5K safely and be sure I am incorporating proper ST sessions throughout! Glad to be here!

Hi Everyone... I am Toni, 51, Married almost 31 years to my high school sweetheart and best friend ever, we have 2 grown boys and 3 furbabies..

2 years ago in Oct. i did my first 5k ever, it was a virtual for Breast cancer awareness and it got me hooked on the whole virtual thing because well Bling is awesome emoticon I had never really been able to walk more than 1 mile if even that but i found this race and told my self this was the year i would do this. I had been saying for years i would do one of the walks in my town for awareness but large crowds freak me out so i never did them.. anyway.. life happened and due to a flare up of a long term illness wasn't able to walk much.. But here I am slowly getting back on track, trying to strengthen a weak calf and ready to start walking again... I either walk the treadmill or when weather permits and i can walk longer periods of time I walk the Greenway in my town which luckily is just maybe 50 yards from my house..

I am looking forward to walking with you all and making some new friends.. emoticon

hugs
Toni

Hi everyone! My name is Kristen, I am 27, have two beautiful children and a wonderful husband! I have been so out of shape for so long! It's time to change that and get back on track with being healthy! I am starting with walking and slowly building myself back up to being able to walk 5K+ (I used to walk all the time but have gotten so out of shape I can barely walk for 30 minutes anymore).

Time to get back into better shape! My kick off is to train for a 5k on Sept. 12. I will not be walking this one to set a personal best because I plan to walk with my young adult daughter who will be 8 weeks post broken ankle & broken elbow. We did a 5k together 2 years ago and she was a good encouragement to me. She has been through a lot lately, besides this accident she was involved in another accident in 2014 with broken: tib, fib, ankles, heel & foot. After recovering from that we hiked a mountain trail in TN where we pushed each other. Now, it is my turn to encourage her in a 5k. The 5k is at an amusement park and our reward is fast lane passes. I am excited to do this with her and other family members!

Thank you so much for having this, my name is Harmony and I'm trying to lose weight to make myself feel better and to make sure I can go longer without getting any of the hereditary diseases that run rampant through my family. I do yoga and am in the process of finding a good training course to learn how to teach it as well. Since I started going on this website about 3 years ago I've lost 20 pounds which is super impressive for me.

Hi! I just rejoined SP and thought this was a great team to join! I love to walk....I can't run right now or maybe never due to osteoarthritis in my knee. Maybe eventually the doctor says. Today is the day to start again!

hello team! i want to be a runner. :) its so freeing... you can let the wind carry all your stresses and troubles right off your shoulders. you can pound your worries into the concrete with each step furthur. i love the idea of running. i am not very active so this walking program will be a good start. then i will progress into run/walk intervals and then hopefully i can train to be a runner. i think its just wonderful that sparkpeople not only encourages people to be active but also provides the resources to learn HOW... I currently use my elliptical about once a week, and my ballet bar 2x weekly as well as some yoga on the weekends :) now that the kids are back in school, yayyy, i will be walking to take my youngest... its great to get outdoors and be one with the trees and the birds and the lizards and the bees and the morning sunshine. this was my first day of my first week. this week will be easy, the challenge comes next week when i have to start walking more than a mile :) fun fun

Peace

Hi everyone! My name is Sherri. I am 43 years old. I have had a rough couple of years and recently got tired of it and decided to take control, or as much control as I could. I decided that, no matter what anyone said, I could be whoever I wanted to be. I decided I wanted to see if I like jogging and I decided that I would like to jog 5K. Now I am really overweight and have been for a while. I am also really out of shape. I think that it would be better for my body and joints if I start out with walking a 5K and build myself up slowly. So, here I am. Ready to go for it, tomorrow morning. I like mornings best.

I completed this training in 2014 but want to do it again. I started the intermediate walk/jog training but my core needs strenthening before I can do it justice, so decided to sneak back into this one as a repeat and try to improve my core strength and of course my time.

Hi, My name is Michelle and I am from Southern Oregon. I keep thinking I will start running but I already walk so I need to get myself in motion first. I struggle with knee pain so this may still be the best option and I can still make a goal of completing 5 ks even if it isn't done by running. I look forward to walking with you all.

Hi! I'm Linda and I just discovered the joys of 5k walking last year. My first race was the Refuse to Abuse 5k at Safeco Field in Seattle. I liked it so much I committed to completing a 5k every other month for the second half of 2014. For 2015, I committed to completing a 5k ever. I haven't been able to improve my time over a 19 minute mile yet, but I am working on it!

Hello, my name is Cyndi and I am a former runner. I have ran many 5k's, 10k's and two 1/2 marathons. I had to stop running about a year ago due to bad neck pain and tingling down the left side of my body. I was diagnosed with cervical degenerate disk disease. On January 28th I had an anterior cervical discectomy & fusion (ACDF) on four disk in my neck. My recovery has not gone as well as I expected. I am still not sleeping well at night. My throat And neck hurts by the end of the day by just doing routine things around the house.
I really want to get back to running but I am going to start out slow and Walk.
I look forward to the support from this team.

Beautiful picture! I have been here awhile and can honestly say it keeps me accountable and I have steadily lost and kept up my walking and weight workouts! I also swim. As you are close to my weight I would encourage you to swim everyday if possible because it is easy on the joints and will relax you. This helps me through my other workouts too. Good luck and Welcome!

Hi! My name is Janice and I have been working out and walking for about a year. I hit a plateau about a month ago then stated working full time. That broke my plateau so I started walking at night to relieve stress and relax. I hope to do the 5k walk for March of Dimes this summer. My son and I did it several years ago then I lost about 165 pounds and I want to try it again. I am training for this now. It is to be held in July and since I live in Florida I will be also dealing with heat and stamina. Wish me luck!

HI, I'm Cheri and I have already been walking but its hard to keep motivated to keep it up. So I saw this challenge and thought this would be a good start.

Success is not a destination, but the road that you're on. Being successful means that you're working hard and walking your walk every day. You can only live your dream by working hard towards it. That's living your dream.

emoticon Hi, I'm new to this team but not to walking. Used to be a runner but knees can't take much more than a few miles a few times a week which is what I'm trying to get in so walking is sort of my cross training exercise. I joined this team because I still have trouble getting myself to do something the days that I don't run and I thought this challenge might encourage me.

I'd prefer not last place, but I've been inactive too long. I'm looking to boost my activity level now that spring is near!
I'm excited about this journey with you! emoticon

Hi, I'm Cathy. I'm trying to lose weight and get back in shape. I used to exercise all the time and was startled to find that just the shortest incline now seem to slow me down a lot. So, I thought I'd work my way through the 5 k walk and then do the 5 k run and try to get back a little of what I've lost--except, you know, not the weight! emoticon

Hello Team! I'm Steph in Oregon, 65 years old and pretty much in maintenance weight-wise. Ran my very 1st 5-K last May and fell in love with it. I don't travel much so may have to wait for the next year's Color Run, but hope to find other 5-K's to work on, too. My main goal is to make my "golden" years the healthiest, most active and memorable years of my life.

Hi I am 72 years old, 50 lbs overweight. I just happen to find this team on my start page. I have set small goals for myself, first one is to lose 10 lbs by Nov 8, I started in Sept. I will have to admit not doing so well, lost lb, then gained. I am a stress eater and my husband had to have emergency surgery and was in the hospital for a week and that didn't help my stress. He is getting better slowly but may need another surgery. Exercise does help me and I think setting this goal beginner 5k walker will help me stay on track. I am active in church and red hats. Do go out with friends to eat lunch. Need to make better choices there. I have been married to Don for 50 and 1/2 years. We have 3 great adult children, 10 grandchildren ranging in ages from 5 to 27 and 2 great grandchildren 2 and 5. I basically want to stay healthy, get into a more healthy eating and exercise for older people so that I can continue to get around and be self reliant and enjoy my remaining years.

Hi,

I am a 64 year young woman, who is 40 lbs overweight. I have health problems that challenge me considerably. One think that's easy for me is walking. I just don't like non-goal walking so I'm hoping to find a local or virtual walking program here. I'm hoping the structure will help me discipline me to walk. I want to loose weight and be healthy a lot. I know It's going to take work, a lot of work. I presently do Tai Chi and swimming, but it is not enough, I need to do more. I'm hoping adding walking will do the trick. If there's anyone from Miami, let me know. Maybe we can get together an walk a 5K.

Thanks for reading my post.

Have a great day!

I have made the decision to change my habits so I can keep up with my baby girl and give her the childhood she deserves. Hi I am a 43 yr old stay at home mom of four. I am very much out of shape and my weight loss journey seems never ending. However, I have signed myself up for a 5k race on nov 9th. I can walk the 3 miles but I need to be able to keep a 15 min mile (or under) pace!

Hello my name is Valerie and I'm a stay at home, homeschooling mama trying to get healthy!

I'm participating in my first 5K in November. I have Psoriatic Arthritis (similar to RA), so I am going carefully and slowly. I'm looking to learn and train with guidance. :)

Hello to all,
I'm joining this team to motivate me to keep on keeping on. I tend to start trying an exercise program only to slowly fall away. I watch my daughter go out and run 10 miles like it's nothing. So I figure I can at least walk a few miles on a consistent basis! This seems like a fantastic way to get and stay motivated.

Life is a like your best friend, some days you just want to hug it and other days you need to kick it's butt:P

Hi. I am new to the team and my name is Georgann. I am a grandmother of 7 and a great grandmother of 1. I am 62 years young and still working. My husband and I raise miniature horses so I get a lot of walking. Recently I signed up for a 5K walk for a local clothing store called Linda's Closet on September 13th. I know that I am late in joining the team but I need all the help I can get. Being 60 pounds overweight but otherwise in good health, I am challenging myself to do this. I also have a 5K walk on September 13th and October 5th. I know I can do this but need the encouragement.

Country Hawk Georgann

I will do what I need to do in order to do what I want to do.

Hi All! I've just rejoined SparkPeople and this team. I'm walking a 5K on 9/21 and started the training plan today. I haven't run in so long that I'm sure I would wind up on a YouTube video and see myself on the morning news one day when it goes viral! I'm not ready for that!!!

Good luck to you all as you train and walk your next 5K!

Hey everyone, I'm very overweight and out of shape, but I've always wanted to try something like this, and hopefully continue to increase my pace and distance to be able to run someday. I look forward to getting to know some of you throughout this journey. I'm going to advance to the next least difficult level, of walking/running after these 5 weeks are up, until I can at least run a 5K!

Here's to walking! We can do this!

Hi everyone. I've decided to join this group as a kick up the you know what. I am 20 and as unfit as anything, I don't think I could even get close to run training for a 5k so for now I'm aiming to walk one.

I am hoping that knowing all you guys are going out to walk everyday will motivate me to do it, the only thing stopping me is myself!

Hello everyone. I just joined the team. Running for me is not possible, however, I am now able to walk again. So many people think about walking. To me, it is something I am very grateful to be able to do. For over one year I was confined to a wheelchair because of a doctor's mistake. Today, I am walking again!!
