Hi! I'm Mandy. I, too, joined the 5K Walking program awhile back and never really stuck with it. I've been eating very unhealthy lately and want to stop! I'm really hoping I can accomplish this 5K thing, make some SparkFriends, and be an example for my amazing son. :) Happy Walking!!!!!

I joined the 5k walking team awhile back and never really followed the program. So at the beginning of this month I started using walking videos here at home. I've hit several days with 10000 steps so far and a couple that were really close.
My Fitbit quit working so I contacted the company about it. After several emails back and forth they sent me a replacent. I had a Fti Zip but they replaced it with the Fit One. I love it!!!!

Hi My name is Carollee, I signed up for a 5k and tried to do the running program but It was too hard on my arthritic feet, I will still do short intervals but I'd rather rely on walking!

I am new to this 5K stuff. I only signed up yesterday and yesterday was the first day in a long time that took a walk during my lunch. Planning on taking another long walk today.

Hi everyone, my name is Kim and I joined this 5k race because it was one of the challenges for the Biggest Loser Challenge #18 team that I am on. I have tried doing this before but always just got distracted and never completed one. I am hoping this time will be different. I am planning on doing this program for at least 3times to build up my strength until I am able, asthma allowing, to do move to the walk/jog 5k program. I would like to get into running but for the longest time when I was a child I was forbidden from running due to my asthma and its severity. I'm hoping by this time next year that I will be doing a 5k running program.

Hi, my name is Jojo and I joined because I feel like these 5k races keep me motivated and striving to be better. I've signed up to do a second 5k race now. My first one was in the snow and it took me over an hour because I didn't want to fall and get injured. So now I want to beat my time (hoping for no snow this time). I felt like this challenge can help me be better prepared for my second race. Good Luck, Everyone!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Rosie and I joined this team today. I can't wait to start walking. I needed something to push me to walk for longer lengths and to improve my endurance when I walk. I am unable to jog because of a knee injury I sustained a few years ago and now I'm sticking to walking most of the time with a few intervals of jogging if isn't painful. I'm glad to be a part of this team and I hope I will be able to motivate and receive motivation as well. Feel free to check my SparkPage and add me as a friend.

Hi I'm Amy and joined this challenge for a little more physical activity as I'm trying to incorporate different exercises for each day, I'm exercising at least 5 days per week. I started this group on Sunday so I did 2 walks so far, feels good so far. I think these different challenges on this site are fun and very encouraging and I'm really hoping I can lose the weight I need. My first mini goal is to get to 169 lbs. It's just a few lbs but for some reason I can't seem to get there. I get to 173, sometimes 171 and that's about up, goes up and down and never lower. Hopefully with variety of exercises it will help this time.

This is my first week on this team. I am recovering from surgery and thought this would be a great way to build my strength. Yesterday walk was great.
In 2011 I was walking often and a lot, felt great. 2012 I didn't walk and now my clothes don't fit and I have no stamina so it's time to get going. I am 63 and want to put the pep back in my step.

Hello my name is Diana. I live in Sevierville Tennessee, home of Dolly Parton. My life is out of control so I have decided to at least get my weight somewhat under control. I have to start somewhere, right. The walking challenge sounded like something I could do. I have trouble with both knees so I have to careful what I do. They want to give out on me. So I really want to lose weight, since Sept I have lost 77 pounds but have a lot more to go.

Hi Everyone! My name is June, I am 70 years old and I live in Chesapeake, Va. I have been working at losing the weight I gained after I retired from nursing. Its coming off slowly and I do have a health issue as that I need to have surgery on my ankle and I have put this off until October but I do want to try and do this 5 K walk. It may take me a little longer but I do want to do this. I joined the team yesterday and I am ready to start this program come tomorrow. Hope everyone is having a great day!! We can do this!!

Hello, my name is Kathy and I just joined the team yesterday. I am working my way up and hoping to do a walk/jog (or run) 5K this summer, but need to get in shape and lose some weight. I have never really liked exercise, but I figured walking is the best way to start. I have been with SP for a little over a year now and just really starting to get more involved. I really enjoy it.

Hi everyone - my name is Jess. I am 38 and live in Wisconsin. I have struggled with my weight nearly my entire adult life. I have just finished my Master's Degree, passed my board exams, and become a licensed Occupationl Therapist. I enjoy the outdoor life, but Wisconsin winters make it a bit harder to get out and about. Winter is hopefully coming to an end (isn't that what the darn rodent told us?) and I have challenged myself to a 5K with my best friend. In return to her challenge to do the "color run" I have challenged her to log her progress on here. We both met while power walking our dogs, and now several dogs later, we're too far apart to power walk together. This is my attempt to keep us going. Hopefully increasing my fitness and health will help me with my horse riding, dog training, job, and increase my life enjoyment! I have to be careful, both knees are whacked, so I love that this program starts slowly! I hope these forums will help me stick to it and get out there and walk! NO MORE EXCUSES.

Hi my name is Marian, I am 58 and I live in Ireland. I have always battled (we're talking serious battles here) with my weight, in fact since a young child. I really feel that this is really *it* this time, I have lost 37lbs doing a very restricted plan with an obesity clinic. I really need to start walking, but for obvious reason, I find it very difficult and sore. But the point is that I need to move more, so as the weather is now getting better, hopefully I will have more opportunities to get out and walk a little. i am looking for lots of Christian spiritual and motivational songs to put on my mp3 player to keep me focussed. Thanks so much for read. Really wish you guys all the best in each of your journeys x

YVETTE2255, I found getting up off the sofa, tying my shoelaces going outside and just putting one foot in front of the other - repeat - worked brilliantly. I started walking, then I wanted to go further, now I want to go faster.

My name is Yvette. I am a High School and college basketball official in the Los Angeles area who just fnished my season last week. I need to lose 20lbs by June 1st to get ready for my next season so training for a 5k sounds like a good idea. My goal is to run a 5k, but I will start off walking first. LOL Having a hard time getting started. Where and how do I start?

I've walked 2 5ks so far and aim to participate in one a month for the remainder of the year (missed January - snow) and have a goal to finish each one faster than the last one. I've been walking fairly regularly on weekends as weather permits. Usually just over 2mi each time out and try to keep a pretty brisk pace. Adding jog intervals has been tricky, simply because it's been slippery underfoot. So I've tried to concentrate on just keeping a brisk pace.
The first was on a beautiful sunny day and we ended up just taking a relaxed stroll, don't remember the pace, but it wouldn't have been anything to write home about that's for sure.
The second was a valentines day one with my DH. We walked, there was freezing rain, but we completed it in just over 17min/mile pace. DH walks faster than I do, so he pushed me a bit.
Next up is a St. Paddy's 5k. This one I'm doing on my own. DH is coming to cheer me along and I'm hoping to start to incorporate a few jog intervals.

BestMommy,
That sounds like a great way to start! Get your daughter involved and you can do it together. Most of the local 5Ks are walk/run so it could be good for both of you. Let us know how it goes.

Good morning all. My name is Barbara and I started out the year doing very well and walking or doing intervals on my treadmill every day. I have even lost 10 pounds. But, in the last week my classes have taken over and I have not been on the treadmill. I am hoping that this gets me back. I am down 10 pounds and want to keep going. I just need something to give me some incentive to get back. I also want to run so this should be an ideal program to get me into it. I am looking forward to this and will see if I can find a 5k virtual race to run.

Hello! I am Linda and I started my '5k my way walking program' today. I walked for 15 min after doing fifteen minutes on the ARC trainer (similar to the elliptical) I have been really bad at the exercise part of my life and even more so in the last two years following back surgery. By trade my occupation was as a nurse for over 30 years until my back surgery. I cried every time I took my grandkids to the park this past summer because I could not get down to play with them, I couldn't lift them up and I even had trouble pushing them in the swing. I refuse to let that be the case again!

Hi there everybody! I'm Gwen aka Not2L82BME. I signed up for the team in hopes of getting me prepped to do a 5K in April. My 41st b-day is April 1st...no, thats not a type-o, I'm an April Fool Baby. I found a 5K called the April Fool's Run and it sounded to perfect to pass up.
I'm determined to do something fun and active for myself. I need a challenge that I can see and acheive that will help me to keep motivated in my journey to a healthier more fit me.
Can't wait to go back and read about how this challenge team works!

When I evaluated Jan I decided I didn't demonstrate much commitment to movement. I did do better yesterday but caught myself backsliding again today. I'm laid off right now so "if I can't find the time and energy now, when will I?" All the other folks I know that have gotten fit w/ similar life/job traits as me are now committed 5K people. So I just decided "OK this is what it's going to take." I printed out the list and have it on my console. Now I need to look up a 5K and sign up. Slightly terrified in I guess a good way. I'm checked out for health and did 25 min Sweating to the Oldies yesterday and have done some in last month.
Had anyone else here jumped in under similar circumstances? I have no support at home for this, so I'm counting on my Sparkies. I'll be back later to check thread and to post my 5K, eek.

I am Roxanne. And I just signed up for my first 5K ever - it's in a month! And I don't want to be the last one across the finish line.

Hi my name is Pat and I have been a member of Sparks for quite some time. I have not been serious about changing my lifestyle. I need to do something. I have three grandchildren and I want to be able to keep up with them, and I want to be around for them. I need to take care of myself to do this. I enjoy walking - I have a membership to our local YMCA.

Hello my name is Sandy and I have been a member for awhile now and I am just now getting back into sparkpeople. I just did not have the motivation to follow through the first time on here, but I am now. I am 41 years old and I have three sons and a husband I have been married to for 20 years. I have lost 50 pounds since the last time I was on here in march. Over the spring and summer of this year I did alot of walking due to the fact I had no car. I still have 50 pounds to go. I lost the first 50 by walking and watched what I ate and portion control. My oldest son is graduating this year and I promised him by the time he graduates in June he will have a skinny mom. See my kids have never seen me thin their whole entire lives, and I plan on them seeing me this way the rest of their lives.

Hello everyone! I'm Kris! I have been away from exercise for a while and I thought walking would be a good way to get myself back into things! Plus my puppy will be thrilled at actually being walked more often! Cheers!

Hi I am Cheri and I joined this program because I like the thought of completing a 5k and having that to look forward to makes it more likely that I will stick with this. Hopefully someday I can do an actual 5k race but a virtual one is a good start.

Hi I'm Karen! I signed up w/SP at the end of Aug but didn't officially start until after vacation in Sept. I have lost 14 pounds as of this morning's weigh in. I'm hoping this challenge will help me to stay on track and be more active. Not at all sure what I'm getting into, but willing to try!

Hi I'm Tracy, I joined the 5K rookie runner because I was already starting to add some running to my walking routine, training myself to go the next level, so when I saw this I was ready to jump on board. Yesterday, I did my first training session. The funniest thing happened. I I went to this beautiful park called River park marina. I never been there before but I read that it had a nature trail. NOT!! Well yea it had a nature trail but it seemed as if it was only a few feet long you can walk the whole trail in about 5 minutes. There was plenty of nature thou. There was so many trees you can barley walk through it. so I had to improvise for the remainder of my 20 minute walk should have stayed home, there a beautiful walking path in the back of my apartment complex that I use a lot. But I've been in Port Saint Lucie, Fla for about 7 months now and haven't been to one park yet. put there are lots of parks in Port Saint Lucie, I will explore another on tomorrow, but I will call first. Anyway that's my story. Have a great day Tracy

Hi, I'm 58 yrs old and have chronic bursitis in my hips and knees. At my present weight there is no way that I could jog or run, but I can walk. I just got the treadmill out of the basement and upstairs where it taunts me if I don't get on it. So this is a great program for me.

We are visiting in Switzerland. I have tried pastries not availbe in Idaho. We walk a lot here, but I joined this team so I can get back on track when we go home on mon. I will need to walk at airports as the flight will be long getting there. I was pleased to learn that kilometers are shorter than miles. I think I can do this. That week will be the 1 yr. anniversary since my last stroke. Let's go for it!

Hey!! My name is Heather and I'm from Northern BC, Canada. I started my journey on January 9th 2012 and I am working towards completing a timed mountain half-marathon in 2014. It's called the Emperor's Challenge. There are only 800 or so participants allowed, and it has to be finished before the time limit of 5 hours. It is in a beautiful place (Tumbler Ridge BC) and this is something I never thought I'd be able to do. My starting weight was 387.4, after losing I don't know how many pounds (I didn't have a scale but knew I was losing because my clothes were fitting better) and I am now down to 340 pounds. My doctor told me that my ideal weight would be around 147, but to be honest, I am aiming for 175 or so.
Right now though, my goal is to lose another 15 pounds before the year mark. (Jan 9th 2013) I joined this walking program because I have been searching for people who are on the same week/day as I am, and recently hurt my ankle and have had to restart this program. I am going to be doing week 1 day 3 tomorrow so if there is anyone out there who would like a walking buddy, even though we're virtual, feel free to message me!!
Also, if there is anyone in Northern BC or really anywhere in the world that needs someone to talk to, MESSAGE ME!!! I don't think that any of us could ever have enough support :)
I wish you all the best in your journeys!!

Hello My name is Sue, I'm working on a goal of being able to do the Expedition Everest 5K Challenge at Disney World. It has a minimum time eligibility requirement ... and I'm physically incapable of running, due to a neurological disease. I can walk though and I'm one determined woman. The event is in May.
