I was prescribed lidoderm patches when I was in the hospital. They worked very well. When I got out of the hospital I found that my insurance would not cover the patches. When I lived in CA I used Medical Marijuana, so far that has worked the best for my pain. I moved to IL 2 years ago, where it is currently not yet legal for me. I too am currently searching other natural pain relief.

I am currently on Lyrica 3x's a day. It works for about 1 hour. When I take it with coffee after meals, it works for about 3 hours. Once a week a stronger medication, so I can catch up on housework. I just saw an orthopedic specialist on Thursday. He has referred me back to physical therapy. PT hurts but I feel strengthened afterwords. I am doing a strength training challenge on FB with a spark team member as well as the January challenge. Though, I am not being as consistent with the January challenge.

There are foods that help with pain relief: Ginger, Turmeric, garlic, cherries and cherry juice. If you know of more, let me know. I use ginger in my cooking, raw in freshly blended lemonade, and diced added to guacamole. Turmeric, I add to salmon and other canned fish. Garlic I use in all of my vegetable cooking. I always inhale the aroma of freshly cut garlic for about a minute for it's antibiotic properties, and add it last to raw food mixtures, such as salsa, then eat it while it is fresh. Fresh cherries I keep on hand when they are in season and eat them liberally. I also keep stocked on frozen cherries to add to fat free plain yogurt.

My time is up on the library computer. I hope my suggestions are helpful. The response from others has been helpful to me. Thanks for encouraging this conversation.

With all the cold weather this winter i decided to focus on strength training exercises. Using the January fitness jumpstart challenge videos is encouraging me to look forward to working out every day.

Thank you for all the welcomes! I will enjoy learning from all of you, and I will go out and get some of the capsaicin cream to try--I have not tried this yet. I am also wondering if any of you have found any of the patches that work.

capsaicin cream helps some people, It is over-the-counter. After rubbing it in, be sure to wash your hands.

Have a TERRIFIC day!

Happy New Year, Paula and others!
I also must avoid pain meds. I use heat, eat small meals, celebrate weight loss. Things were getting better. (I have RA). Then Christmas came with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Well, I picked myself up and began a new fight.

I am 64 years old. I can appreciate your comments. Welcome. Best thoughts and prayers will include you.
Sandy

Welcome from Minnesota! If you have access to a pool, water aerobics can help because you take a lot of the stress off the joints in the water. I've started using it because of my knees and it seems to be helping. Good luck!

Blessed be.

Welcome to the team. Sorry you are in pain. Sparkpeople has many sitting exercise videos that help. I have OA in my whole body but mostly knees, hands & back. I walk on the treadmill very slowly and this helps my knees. I also noticed when I don't eat sugar, I have hardly any pain. There are specific exercises for every part of the body. My daughter is a physical therapist and gives me different exercises depending on what area hurts the most.
Good luck!

I am Paula Griffith and am new to this team. I am also new to SparkPeople. I am learning lots in a short amount of time because everyone has been so helpful. This past year I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in my right hip and left knee. The hip is the worst and the surgeons tell me I am too young for hip replacement--I am 56. I did the research and understand these surgeries last only about ten years...so yes, I decided to wait. However, I REFUSE to live on pain meds. I go without as often as possible. I've decided to take weight off my bones and look at healthy eating for this disease. I would love and appreciate any comments about what you do for pain and what you've found that helps. Blessings to each of you... emoticon
