Tatiana, Judy is absolutely right. Heat before you walk to relax the muscles, and ice after to reduce swelling is what works for me, but any combination of heat/cold for 15 minutes each - if you can, 3 or 4 times a day will do wonders. The swimming pool is a great idea. You can do exercise without stress on your knees. Good luck on your journey.

ANEWTATIANA - - Use the cane. Don't worry about how it looks or "what will people think". It's better to use the cane than to fall out in public!!!!! I used a cane for years and even a walker for a while. So what if they look at you differently - - big deal!! It's so much better to use that cane and be safe than to fall and hurt your knees or break a hip etc!! Do you have a pool around you that you an walk in etc. Pool exercises and hot tubs are great for sore knees and backs. Also, in the Articles and Videos Section, they have different exercise videos including chair exercises, yoga pilates etc. Those are all good exercises for you.

Also, you need to set up your Spark Page. If you go to My Trackers, down to Spark Points (click) and then on down to Create Spark Page (about 2-3 lines below One Time Challenges). Click on that and go from there. This will do many things; one of those things being that others can "Friend" you, learn a little more about you, and be able to send you "Spark Goodies" to help encourage you etc.

Thanks for the replies and good advice!

I do walk, almost every day (doctor's orders for high blood pressure). Although I don't walk fast, I can walk for a long time. But when I finally stop and rest, that's when the real problem starts. I stiffen up so badly that I find the first few steps after resting are excruciating. Oddly enough, I don't have much pain first thing in the am. It's only after I exert myself then rest.

I go through vats of Tiger Balm. I only use cold when there is swelling.

One thing I don't do is strength training for my legs. I'll have to look into that.

As for the cane, I'm still too self-concious to use one. Maybe with weight loss might come a little ego loss? :)

TALIANA - - Welcome to the team. I have had a total of 3 new knees (2 of them 3 days apart) and both ankles and feet almost totally reconstructed due to very severe flat feet that caused torn tendons. I spent 8 out of 12 months totally confined to a wheel chair (6 of those months was with no weight whatsoever allowed on my feet). I found out I didn't want to be in a wheelchair the rest of my life!! I started walking first just in the house, then progressed to our carport, then 100 feet (50 feet each way) and kept progressing another 40-50 feet every day or two. I am now walking 2 miles (1 mile twice a day) and as soon as it cools off down here which won't be until end of October, I plan on trying 1 more mile each day.

Getting the weight off definitely helps with the joints. Just sitting makes the joints worse. Start out by walking a little each day - - that other woman has probably been walking for years - - don't worry about her. If you increase your length each day or so your speed will eventually increase also, even without you realizing it. Also, do some strength training during the day - - a few minutes at a time - - nothing strenuous to start but you need to strengthen/tone the muscles around your knees which will also help your joints. Don't forget to elevate your legs and apply ice for 20 minutes and then some moist heat and alternate. If you find that ice works better for you, then use only the ice but for no more than 20 minutes at a time.

Good luck to you. emoticon and together emoticon . We are here to help, support, and encourage one another. Read other posts from people with arthritis as well. You might find something on one of those posts that might also help you.

I have arthritis in my knees, one from an accident and the other from babying the first. Getting the weight off was the biggest help. Start by walking one way for 5 min and turn around and walk back. Everyday walk, you will find you have walked further in your 5 min. If you need a cane or staff, use it. The Dr suggested I use one and one i can walk a lot further with a staff, but walk faster too

Hi!

I've had osteoarthritis in my knees for what seems forever. I'm middle-aged and the other day I was watching an elderly woman who could triple my walking speed! I want to stop the progress of this disease and have come here looking for ideas (and it doesn't hurt to know I'm not alone with this).

Thanks for being here!
Tatiana
