WHEN I HAD MY KNEES DONE I WAS 55 YEARS OLD. I WEIGHED IN AT ABOUT 227 POUNDS. I WAS RAISING AN ADHD/ODD 8 YEAR OLD AT THE TIME NOW SHE IS 10. SHE WAS A HANDFUL. NOW IT IS ALOT EASIER. THE DOCTOR MADE ME WAIT UNTIL I WAS 55 BEFORE HE WOULD DO THEM. I WAS LOOKING AFTER 3 OF MY GRANDDAUGHTERS RANGING FROM NEW BORN TO 7 YEARS OLD. I WAS TAKING 2 BUSES 8 TIMES A DAY IN THE WINTER WITH THEM. TRYING TO GET ON AND OFF A BUS WITH A BUGGY AND TRYING NOT TO LOOSE THE OTHER 2 WAS A CHALLENGE. NOW IT WOULD BE A PIECE OF CAKE.I ONLY HAVE THE 10 YEAR OLD NOW AS I HAVE CUSTODY OF HER AND MY HUSBAND IS HANDICAPPED AND I HAVE TO FEND FOR HIM. HE IS GETTING BETTER AT GETTING AROUND. THEY SAID HE WOULD NEVER WALK AGAIN UNTIL WE GOT BACK TOGETHER AFTER 40 YEARS AND WOULDN'T LET HIM GIVE UP.HE WALKS WITH A WALKER NOW.

DMS - - If I need another TKR, I wouldn't have to think twice about it - - I'd definitely have it done. Yes, it's a major surgery but it's much better than the pain you have now without relief!! Yes, you'll have some pain although once I was home I think I only had one Tylenol #3. After the surgery you'll most likely be on a pain pump which you will have control of - - just push that button and the pain is gone. You'll probably also be hooked up to a machine a few times a day that will gently move your knee for you - - that machine is an important part of the healing process. As long as you do your exercises when you're home you will have no problems. I would seriously consider having it done. Don't be afraid of it.

I am glad your TKR's have worked out so well. Hearing this has encouragied me to reconsider having one. My doctor would like me to loose another 18 lbs so I have some time to get my courage up.

Thanks again for caring.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM. AS JUDY I HAVE HAD BOTH TKR DONE AND IT WAS THE BEST THING I EVER DID OTHER THAN MY CHILDREN. HAHA LOL. I DID THEM 6 MONTHS APART. I AM RAISING MY 10 YEAR OLD ADHD AND ODD GRANDDAUGHTER AND HAVING MY KNEES DONE HAS BEEN A GODSEND SINCE SHE IS SUCH A HANDFUL AT TIMES. I WISH THE DOCTOR WOULD HAVE LET ME GET THEM DONE SOONED. I AM 57 YEARS OLD AND HAVE NEEDED THE NEW KNEES FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW.

I WILL SUCCEED BECAUSE I KNOW I CAN DO IT AND I AM MOTIVATED.

DMS - - I've had 3 TKR bilateral and don't regret it a bit. The last two I had bilateral and done at the same time. I'd have them both done at the same time again. According to the dr, I have more bend in my knees than most people have that have never had a TKR. It was worth every bit of the discomfort and work!! Don't ever be afraid of having it done. I've never regretted it!! By the time they come up with "stem cell" or other less intrusive procedures you could be in excrutiating pain beyond belief!!! I wouldn't hesitate at having it done at all. It sure beats the pain!! As long as you do your exercises you'll do just fine.

As they say "misery loves company" which is why I joined this team. I am only half joking as I I injured myself around 14 years ago and ended up having a lateral menisectomy in my left knee. I am told I need a TKR but trying to hold off to see if "stem cell" or other less intrusive procedures might become available. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know more about new procedures coming down the pike.

Thanks Everyone!
