Hi Catherine and welcome to SparkPeople. Yes, you are more than welcome to vent in here!!! Feel free to ask questions and any of us will be happy to try to answer them. Read all you can in the Articles & Videos. There are videos that give you recipies, chair exercises, core exercises, etc etc etc. We all have different ways that we've found to help us. My husband has both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. He's on Plaquenil and also drinks 4-8 oz of TART CHERRY JUICE for his arthritis. On bad days he takes 4 oz twice a day. This has been known to help arthritis in many poeple. BUT, it HAS to be TART cherry juice. Any other kind doesn't do it.
I also have arthritis through my body with 3 knee replacements and almost total reconstructive feet and ankles. Walking seems to help as well as weight loss (almost 25# in 1 year but lost several clothes sizes). If you have the use of a pool, that is a good place to exercise/walk, especially on those bad days. Sand is the best to walk on for knees/joints etc. Cement is the worst to walk on..
Be sure to get your 8 hours of sleep in each night and drink your 8+ glasses of calorie-free liquids.
Set small goals for yourself. When losing weight, don't look at the full amount of weight you have to lose but rather look at how many pounds/inches you've already lost, how you feel and how your health has improved. A goal of 5-10% of your total body weight is a good place to start.
Have fun and enjoy your Spark journey.
One Day At A Time Dear Jesus!!!
Not looking at how many # to go but back and how many #s I've already lost!!!
My name is Catherine. I am 56 years young and have arthritis in my right knee...probably both knees and my feet. I lost 25 lbs and the pain in my knee seemed to dissipate with doing yoga, meditation and spiritual mind treatments. but shortly after the pain in my feet came raging forward and I have gained 8lbs back because I have significantly slowed down and I know I am eating for comfort again. I have tried cortisone and hyalgen. They worked for 4 months and I have not even been able to pay off the resulting medical bills. I am now taking tramadol and topical NSAID.
I no longer wear my knee brace... I probably will resume wearing it when I get back to zumba. I snowshoed all winter and now will be hiking and walking and gardening....all good I know, but after my activity, I tend to become immobile cause I am in PAIN and that is when I head for something soothing to put in my mouth.
Most people don't know how hard it is for me because I do my best to not let on. I do my best to stay focused on the positive. I am hoping to be here regularly to get support from all you, because there are days I just need to vent and I hope I can garner info and ideas on how other people get on. Thanx you all
