I have disintegrating vertebrae, L1 thru L5. I'm still standing up straight, but sometimes it feels like there's an earthquake (slipping discs) back there. Wish I could exercise, but I haven't found anything I can do that doesn't require either bending or twisting. I did find that riding long distances was painful. I bought a Tempur-pedic cushion made for the car, and it is wonderful. No more problem riding as long as we stop every now and then to stretch.
Hi to everyone. I am 60 years old and I retired last year from nursing. In January, last year, I developed severe lower back pain with numbness in both legs. I was retiring anyway in mid-February so I took a few weeks of sick time thinking that the pain was temporary. We had already planned a vacation to Yuma, Arizona, so we went anyway. I could not stand straight so walking was very uncomfortable but we rented a wheelchair. I have severe arthritis in my lower back according to the tests. Tomorrow, I see a neurosurgeon. My pain is controlled by exercises and drugs. If I try to reduce the exercises or drugs, the pain returns. I have gained a pile of weight from the drugs and moving less but I have lost 8 pounds in the last month. I am appreciating knowing more about the food, I put in my mouth. I am also more likely to do aerobic exercises. I do the stretch exercises anyway. Thank you, spark people. After doing so well through the holidays, I bewildered by my lack of enthusiasm today. Hopefully, this will pass.
Even though my start date shows sometime in the past, I am officially starting my SparkLife this month. If you look at my SparkPage you will read why I am finally getting on board. Right now I am taking baby steps by lurking on the board and weeding through all of the many options and activities there are in SparkPeople. That's what I love - something for everyone! And it keeps me busy rather than eating. But as I get more active in managing my life, I will also get more active in the boards. So here's to Sparking! I plan to start a blaze!!
