This is not a good year for gardening in my area. the mild winter and dry spring till now has been stressful. The critters are everywhere and eating, digging up or just damaging stuff. it is driving me nuts. i had some good strawberries. but so far no green beans and only a few peas . some of my tomatoes/pepper have blossom end rot.

i planted a few seeds, but they don't always do the best in my heavier clay soil. i sometimes dig a hole and fill it with a little potting soil then do my seeds and then more potting soil.

i am trying organic gardening- mostly to avoid using chemicals so i spend a lot of time digging out weeds

I am going to try a recipe I found for dilled zucchini pickles. Something like that may work for your summer squash as well. I have so many cucumbers I started making pickles with them too. Refrigerated first and then I plan to do some dills later this week. Last year I had a handful of cukes and this year I have picked over a bushel already and more to pick every day! I have been giving a lot of them away too.

I picked cucumbers, tomatoes, hot peppers, green peppers, a few beans & peas today. Made tomato hand pies for Farmer's Market tomorrow. I posted pictures on my page if anyone wants to take a look at my garden. I am sure enjoying being outdoors and getting my hands dirty!

Thanks for finding this topic - I will try to remember where it is! Garden in growing like crazy and I have been harvesting basil, tomatoes, peas, beans, cucumbers, potatoes and soon I will harvest my first edamame pods. Melons are coming along nicely and peppers are all getting bigger. I have added a little more exercise to the hoeing, weeding, etc. Yesterday I did a couple sets of bicep curls with a 5 gallon bucket full of water. I plan to add squats and tricep work on Friday morning. It is so peaceful and beautiful out there (community garden at Hill AFB) that I enjoy every second of my outdoor activities and hate to leave when it is time to go home and shower to go to work.

So, the bad news is: right after I planted all of my tomatoes, basil, watermelon, cantaloupe and some other starts, it rained steady for 3 days, then snowed and then it warmed up and the wind blew for two days. All of my tender starts perished in that craziness so I need to go buy plants to replace all those things. Good news is that broccoli, cucumbers, squashes, potatoes, celeriac, peas, beans, beets and carrots are all up and thriving! Still need to plant onion sets too.

I'm so jealous of all you gardeners! I lost my gardening space when I moved from Colorado to a high-rise apartment in New Jersey. Every year I would plant a salsa garden: tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, cilantro. Fresh salsa all summer is definitely worth the effort!

I did get in the garden and planted most of my veggies - did not get the onion sets in, will plant them when I get back from Oregon on the 5th or 6th of June. I pray that the sun will shine and warm up the earth because nothing will grow if the temps stay as low as they have been.

Still too wet and cold here - probably won't be able to plant in the ground till towards the end of May. I do have a lot of seeds started and growing well, waiting for some warm weather.

I decided that since this was the first rain-free day in about 7 days, I would plant my spring veggies. I put in broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage plants, and lettuce seeds. The other day I also planted some asparagus and red onions. Hopefully it's going to warm up soon and stop raining so much, so I can plant my tomatoes and cucumbers, corn, watermelon and cantaloupe. We'll have to see how it goes from here. Right now it's raining again. So praying for some dryness! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I also planted petunias and seed zinnias and pansies.

Anyone else planting gardens?
