I like this team, so I'm sticking around.

However, Valentines Day is not really an issue for me. We might get a chocolate bar or a small selection of chocolates to split. Other than that, we don't do anything special or particularly unhealthy. (Actually we do one thing "special" and that burns 100+ calories.)

Sounds good, I am thinking about a small arrangement from "Incredible Edibles", with 2 or 4 chocolate covered fruits.

This is of course for after dinner with some sparkling cider or water.

Some of the things I do:

To avoid a stocking full of junk, I tell my husband he has a one sweet item limit. I had to clarify this year that real food (like a small pack of nuts) is OK to include too.

The first week of every month is what we call "reset week" or "mini-lent" where we are very strict about snacks (nothing but fruit) and correcting other bad eating habits that creep up during the previous month. We decided in Dec to extend this until our "mega-day" (which is Dec 20th and includes both birthdays and our anniversary).

We usually eat dinner before we go to parties and then just eat fruit or veggies there. It also helps to bring something like a veggie tray or fruit salad.

Christmas itself is not that bad. We do eat cinnamon rolls in the morning (although last year we still made our oatmeal to eat first). Dinner is just layered veggies in the crockpot with a celebration roast on top. We don't have a traditional dessert for Christmas day.

Good idea upping the exercise in advance! You might find you like it better that way anyway. When I went up to 5 days a week I actually found it EASIER than doing 3 or 4. It's just part of the morning routine now, not a sometimes thing.

Non-weight-related goals:
* Run a mile in 10 minutes (SUCCESS! 9/16/2010)
* Run a mile continuously without walking (SUCCESS! 10/30/2010)
* Run 5k continuously without walking
* Run in a 5k race
* Snowboard for an entire day without needing my rescue inhaler (SUCCESS! 1/29/1011)
* Be comfortable in shorts

Oh boy. I just started thinking about this. Christmas traditions with my in-laws depict 2 misbehavior-prone meals: Christmas dinner (which honestly, I can manage since it's not so different from Thanksgiving, which I did manage quite well) and "junk food night."

Yeah, you read that right. After church on Christmas Eve, they make a bunch of junk food and watch movies. This is in lieu of dinner. And I've promised to bring along my family tradition of homemade pierogi this year. emoticon Because I really do want to do this, I think I will.

So I will plan for Christmas Eve to be a caloric nightmare with carb monsters everywhere. Christmas dinner will have to be more along the sensible lines of meat and veggies. I'll have to see if I can convince my mother-in-law to let me add a veg to the table (usually there's just one - green beans - and she overcooks them, but I'd never say that to her face, because I love her dearly).

Next planning phase will be to figure out what exercise I can do in the middle of nowhere, Vermont. Snow, a lack of a local fitness center, and did I mention the middle of nowhere? will all be out to get me. I'll have to think of something.

Non-weight-related goals:

* Run 5k continuously without walking

Wow - I just did that quiz... ouch! I'm glad I did it today so the #'s are fresh in my mind. Ignorance is bliss, but the scale tomorrow is not!

Today I'm cooking for my small family. My husband is in charge of the turkey. He is Mr. Butter-it-all-up. I made him promise not to use butter! I will do most things (stuffing, sweet potatoes) in muffin tins, our mashed potatoes will be instant (much less fat), green bean casserole will be low fat, and although I love pies and we have 2, I will eat some of each, but will avoid the crust. For rolls, my husband and son like brown-and-serves, which I can leave alone easily :)

I had planned on running this morning, but so far, it is only 9 degrees here. I won't go out unless it gets over 32, so we'll see ;)

Happy Thanksgiving and good luck to all!

Erin I advise you to eat regular meals (breakfast and lunch) before you go shopping. If your shopping in the morning eat a filling breakfast (fiber and protein) with plenty water. And I'm sure there is a subway or another resturant that sells salads or healthy sandwiches for you to eat. Plus add a little sneaky workout in during all them walking hours during shopping hehe emoticon I hope this helps.

Great idea!! Preparation is key!

I am planning on one dish per location and using a small plate to help lessen it even more. I am planning this year to incorporate exercise in the beginning of the day and at the end. I am hoping to make this a successful week. Bring it on!!

My biggest challenge will be when my family is with me the rest of the weekend. And we are out shopping and get hungry and they want to eat in the food court.

So I am going to carry a protein bar, for these times. And buy a bottle of water from the food court.

Thanksgiving is going to be a free day, but I can't have Friday and Saturday turn into free days. I have to stick to plan on those days.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

I remember from the Good Eats turkey special that he froze one of the turkey breast halves. He wrapped it in aluminum foil AND plastic to keep it from getting frost bite.

Edited to add: I have obsessively watched that episode of Good Eats multiple times every year since I started hosting Thanksgiving. And I've set up my TiVo to record it again this year!

Send family home with plates of food so their are not left overs.

I wonder how well some of the left overs will freeze?

I hope that my family will decide to stay the whole weekend that way, they can eat the left overs

I agree with you about being "sick". It isn't just about the amount of food, but what food. I notice when I am eating healthy and such and I go off the road and eat something my body isn't used to, I can certainly feel it. Just be prepared for your body to reject what you are eating also.

I do have one other suggestion for all of us who have been eating less lately. A few years ago, I was on a diet (yeah, I know, in hindsight, stupid, and yup, I gained it all back) and my stomach had shrunk from it. At Thanksgiving that year, I ate way too much, like I would have before, and I was SO SICK. Try to keep that in mind - if your stomach isn't used to eating a large amount of food at a time, DON'T FORCE IT! Another bite of mashed potatoes is so not worth the stomach ache and whatever else follows!

Oh dear, Janet, you bring up a good point! Beer! And wine! I have to be really careful about that. I have to decide how much I'm willing to let myself have. I'm pretty sure last year our family of 8 polished off 5 or 6 bottles of wine and a 12-pack of beer last year. And I surely was helping. And my mother-in-law doesn't drink! So really it was 7 of us! Good grief!

I am the hostess with the mostess for Thanksgiving in our family. I kind of staked my claim on it when my husband and I got married. I love cooking and I hate holiday travel. To make up for making everyone come to me, though, I have a tendency to over-love with the food. I come from an Italian heritage complete with that stereotypical Italian grandmother who taught me that food is love. Both for my sake, and my sister-in-law's (she is working with my same personal trainer), and for that matter the health of all of our family, I am going to try to lighten up just a little this year. I will still have a ridiculous amount of food, but hopefully a better balance, and with healthier choices.

My plan is:
#1 - Cut the butter used in Thanksgiving by 60% or more
#2 - Have more veggie options
#3 - Have individual-sized mini-pies for at least some of the pies to help with portion
#4 - Cut down on the amount of starches I make so that there are less leftovers for me to eat later

I also may set my place with a salad plate instead of a full dinner plate, to help myself with portions. I've been doing that in my every day life for a few months and it honestly does help quite a bit. I am wary of doing that, though, for I don't want Thanksgiving dinner conversation to be about my weight or what I'm eating. Perhaps I will just try to spread the food out more on my plate.

Non-weight-related goals:
* Run a mile in 10 minutes (SUCCESS! 9/16/2010)
* Run a mile continuously without walking (SUCCESS! 10/30/2010)

Well I will be in London, so my strategy is to try and limit the fried foods (fish n chips anyone??) and beer! LOL Also the hotel we are staying at has a nice workout facility as well as an indoor heated pool so I'm PLANNING to use both of those options several times.

Here is my recipe for Crab Dip, it is still loaded. I figure it will be better with lower fat/ lower calorie options.

1 Cup of low fat Cheddar Cheese
1 8oz block of Neufchatel (it is kind of like cream cheese but has a third less fat)
8oz of Light Sour Cream
16 oz of Crab
1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce.

I mix it all together the night before and put it in the fridge. Then I sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top. Bake at 350 until it is at least 160 degrees in the center. Then I put the oven on broil to brown the cheddar cheese.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Eat what you like and if someone comments, eat them too

I'll be doing the hosting but my daughters will be contributing food. Luckily we're all health & weight conscious. I make a turkey & turkey breast, since most of us eat the white meat. I remove the skin so no one can eat it. I'm making mashed potatoes using skim milk & lowfat margarine and will make a lower fat gravy. I'm also making a pumpkin pie, but will use egg beaters and splenda to keep the calories down. Daughters are bringing sweet potatoes and roasted vegetables as well as another dessert & rolls. Portion control and extra exercise are a must. Our Zumba for the Wii will be out by then and we always try to take our five dogs for a walk, so that will also help.

I have a couple of things in mind so far, I will make the traditional green bean casserole for the family, but also make 4 bean salad for me (which I love!). I am going to make Chef Megs sweet potato tarts, which will keep me from digging into a casserole and kidding myself about the size. I will also do Chef Meg's turkey gravy...healthy recipe. Mashed potatoes will be made with skim milk and nonfat sour cream. Hope these ideas help! emoticon emoticon

OMG guys and gals i typed in the word thanksgiving pictures on the google website and all these delicious pictures popped up of cakes, pies, dressing, sweet potatoes, etc!!!!!

It made me realize how tempting Thanksgiving will be!! Take some time out to look at these pictures and imagine that it's Thanksgiving. What would you do??? Portion control, binge, starve, or pick only healthy foods??

It really triggered me because I'm a binge eater at times and looking at all that food make me so emotional because I want to be strong and not dive in head first! I'm gonna practice what i'm going to do on Thanksgiving with option like the ones I seen on google.

I am cooking dinner. I plan to make the traditional holiday fair, except instead of turkey we are having chicken.

I usually make crab dip that is a calorie explosion. This year I will be making the crab dip, but bought lower calorie, lower fat ingredients.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

I went to a wedding weekend this summer and split breakfast and lunch with hubby but ate normally when I was with family.
But I eat less normally so it is ok if I left stuff on my plate.
Thanksgiving will be at my younger son's home.
They served fish and spatsel and veggies for Christmas dinner a couple years ago.
I am expecting something exotic and not much of it .
I will bring some cookies and his bride's father will bring pumpkin pie.
But I will still do my 10,000 steps and on eht hills of San Francisco it is always a challenge.
This year I want to try climbing Nob hill without having to stop several times to catch my breath. I love to visit Grace Cathedral at the top.

Well, as for me...hmmmm. I am kind of scared to approach this holiday. This holiday is jammed packed with busyness and lots of food. We first start off in our town, at my parents for an afternoon lunch around 1pm, then we head to my in-laws (out of town) for dinner later that night. We generally spend the night at the in-laws and leave late Friday evening (because of Black Friday...LOL), so more food the next day!! Arg!!! It is SO busy and I am dreading a holiday that should be filled with precious moments and family-time.

SO...I will DO MY BEST to limit myself to 1 small plate at each place and DO NOT eat the little candies and such at the in-laws. I will splurge for a small piece of pumpkin or apple pie and that's it. I am going to eat some veggies before hand to make me full and not overeat on the items. It will be challenging but I got to do it, because I want to be healthy...so we will see how it goes. I have the best of intentions in mind!!

Your menu sounds so appetizing. My mouth was watering. LOL! We always have the 'canned' cranberry sauce at our Thanksgivings too. Can't remember a time when we didn't.

Since I'll be cooking, I have control over what is served. I think I'll plan my menu carefully and consider leaving some foods off. I'll also serve dinner closer to regular time (like 5 PM) which I find reduces the chance of eating too much later in the day.

Tentative menu:
Vegetarian "turkey"
Fruit stuffing
Roasted asparagus
Mashed root vegetables (perhaps a combo like parsnips, sweet and white potatoes)
Cranberry sauce (can-shaped, which is a tradition in our house)
Pumpkin pie - need to find a better tasting healthy version than the one I made last year

One plate not heaping is my limit, as usual anyway. If I want dessert, (who wouldn`t) I plan on just stealing a forkful from someone who is having some, like my hubby. All I really need is a taste as I don`t crave sweets anymore. emoticon

I am going to limit myself to one plate as well. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and I will be in Florida and my in laws and their house is full of sweets all the time! UGH! Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can go walk a lot!

I usually spend the whole 5 day weekend with my parents. they have lots of comfort foods around, plus my family usually has a big drinking party the night before. This year I decided I'm going down only for Thanksgiving day and coming back home after. That way i can control my environment more as well as spend some of my time off working out at what should be a relatively quiet fitness room.

After family dinner, i'm planning to take the dogs for a walk, and probably play some catch with my nephew outside!

I'm also taking several low cal recipes with me to make at my parent's house so I have something i can enjoy without feeling bad about the choices i'm making.

The harder part for me is going to be my 'Birthday dinner' Saturday night.

I'm not sure yet what we're going to do for Thanksgiving day, we may go visit my mother-in-law. If so, I will weigh in and exercise in the morning, limit myself to one plate of food and one piece of dessert, drink plenty of water, and try to fill up on veggies. If not, it will probably be a more or less normal day.

Over the weekend, we will be going to visit my family. On Saturday, we are going out to dinner and to the theater. Again, I will weigh in and exercise in the morning. I will check out the menu ahead of time and choose something relatively healthy/low-calorie, drink mostly water, and if I decide to get a cocktail, I will stick to a small one and limit myself to one. I will also allow myself to be done eating no matter how much is left on my plate, even though we probably won't take food home.

Sunday will probably be the hardest day. My sister is doing an appetizer buffet while we decorate the house, and I know it will be very easy to overeat. I will check out calories ahead of time to keep in mind, and I will try to fill up on fruits and veggies.

My hubby and I are doing a 5K "Turkey Trot" in the morning.

Small gathering at our home for dinner. ALL low cal, low fat, well thought out foods on the menu.

I've asked my son to bring dessert, so I don't have to make any. Lots of neighbors coming over after dinner, and they are all bringing dessert, too. I may or may not have a little. But I AM making good coffee!

We always go to my inlaws...
I am making steamed veggies. Usually I am the mashed potato queen... I am thinking "not" this year... my daughter will be bummmmmed out bout that. But she will be supportive of me for my healthy choices.
Also I am walking the evening before and that morning and Thanksgiving evening. I am setting myself up to have a ME day to walk and think on the things in which I am thankful for.

Hey everyone let's chat of some technique we will use on, before, or after Valentines Day? Are you cooking or eating at someone else home? If your cooking or eating at someone elso house, what will you do to maintain your goals? What will you do to prevent overeating, starving, etc.
