Huh. Whispering Pine invited me way back Nov 2010, and it seems I not only didn't intro myself, I didn't join (or I un-joined... not sure anymore). In any event, I'm back Sparking, and catching up!

Cancer experience - well, much too much in my family, pretty much every member on my Mom's side, and a few on Dad's as well. For myself, so far it's:
* papillary thyroid cancer - total thyroidectomy in Nov 2006;
* inflammatory breast cancer - chemo Jan 2010, bilateral mastectomy with lymph node removal (but no involvement!) in July 2010, and radiation treatment Nov-Dec 2010;
* July 2013 I had some hemoraging, biopsy showed "pre-cancerous cells", which led to a hysterectomy last week, including fallopians, ovaries and lymph nodes. Surgeon says "no obvious signs of cancer", but still waiting until I get full path report in a few weeks.

So far I'm tolerating that last surgery quite well. Very little pain right after, no problems digesting. Best of all, I'm off work so now have time and energy to Spark!

SeaWave

Simply being thankful makes life easier.

I am who I chose to be. Stronger. Leaner. Further. Fierce.

It's about taking my power back.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right.

Welcome! I must say you do have an extremely full plate going for you. Completely are with you on the subject of grandchildren. After my diagnosis the little ones ( now getting bigger) are the reason I buckled under and now am a 11 year Survivor. Then benefits of that healthy life, is one heck of a motivator. Keep in mind we are here for you at any time. Just pop in the Café and let us know how things are going or how we can be of help. Looking forward to see you on the Threads. emoticon

Ah what's in a name? A rose is sweet by any other name, unless you don't like roses... I favor carnations because they last so much longer and they make me smile. I always smile when someone gives me flowers, especially dandy-lions from chubby baby hands! So anyway we are all fighting some sort of battle whether it is weight or extra battles like a cancer somewhere trying to scare us to death if nothing else.

My first breast cancer was found 9 years ago this coming December. It was found on my mammogram which I had put off that year until after our son's wedding. Thank goodness I had because we found it when it was very small and it might not have been seen if I had gotten the mammo earlier and then it would have been much bigger by the next year. So I had a lumpectomy and went into a clinical trial with meds, no other chemo or radiation. The cancer was estrogen reactive. I was on a med for 6 months when I had an immune system reaction - high fever which wouldn't stay down even with Tylenol and Motrin alternating every four hours. The fever continued until I stopped taking the med for the cancer. So I had to drop out of the clinical trial and take the other med in the trial instead which I took for probably another 5 or 6 months until the joint pain was so difficult to live with that I could't handle it anymore and I stopped taking that med as well. Stopping the medication was a difficult decision, but my quality of life was in jeopardy. I was getting depressed because all my joints hurt and I could hardly walk, exercise or even rest comfortably. My breast surgeon/oncologist and I hoped that the almost one year of meds would be enough... Then a year ago last August, another spot showed up on my mammogram - 8 years later. I had an ultrasound biopsy which was reported as negative, but my husband who is also a doctor was skeptical and had me repeat the mammo in 3 months which showed the spot had doubled in size. They had missed it with the ultrasound biopsy because this time the biopsy was positive for a new primary site cancer also hormone receptive. This time because I had had 5 biopsies through the years and the worry that that brings with it I opted for a mastectomy. My breasts were large and heavy and had served me well for over 66 years. I had nursed my five babies. The plastic surgeon said that a reconstruction with one side reduced would be difficult unless they did a bilateral mastectomy in order to match one breast to the other. So the mastectomy was done on Valentine's Day, 2013. Inserts were put in by the plastic surgeon with a port on each side so "fills" could be done with saline to stretch the chest muscle and skin. My wonderful husband brought me sweet red roses, a beautiful red heart-shaped box of chocolates and a new ring. One of our three daughters stayed overnight with me at the hospital and for the next week at home. Another daughter came to help and be supportive for a few days, one of our sons came and I got many phone calls from the other kids, friends and family. I am still in the reconstruction phase getting 2 ounces of saline on both sides each time I visit the plastic surgeon. There was a scare of infection so I was on antibiotics for a few weeks which slowed the process, but now I'm back on track. It's not a picnic, but it's doable. I will feel more "normal" when reconstruction is complete, and be able to find clothes that fit properly and I'll be able to swim without wearing a prosthesis. My posture is improved and my back is better with the weight of my heavy breasts removed. I'm grateful that I don't need chemo or radiation and when the tumor was sent away to be studied I got a score of 14 which means I have a less than 9% chance of recurrence in the next 10 years. I need to lose weight to help my knees and to be healthier overall so I can be a happier healthier Nana to our 10 grandchildren, helping with Girl Scouts, camping, and playing with kids, as well as taking care of our home and helping my husband with his medical practice when I can.

So that's me! We got to see all the kids and grands this summer and hopefully they will all be home for Christmas this year. Everyday is a new adventure, some are better than others and I'm always looking for another one! I'm just happy to be here!!!

Sher.... I can imagine how you feel but, the change back was done because the original change of the name was not mention by someone to the rest of the Team. We do not and have never had only Breast Cancer members as our only members. All Cancer patients an Survivors are Welcomed. The name change back to Warriors In Pink, infact either name was not of my choosing or the Teams. YOU ARE WELCOME with us no matter what our NAME.

Hi, I'm sorry, but I left this team because I felt I was tricked into coming here. You changed the title from Warriors in Pink to Warriors in Pink and colors of the rainbow. Once I joined then you changed it back to warriors in Pink. I am NOT a Warrior in Pink. I am Not a breast cancer patient or survivor. I am the color Pearl, I am a Lung Cancer Survivor and now a Lung Cancer Patient again. I feel that was mean and insensitive to do what you did to get me to join and then change it back once I joined. So, I am leaving. Do not want any part of this if that's the way people are treated.

Thank you anyway..

Hi Thank you for inviting me.

I see the title is Warriors In Pink and colors of the rainbow, that is emoticon

My name is SHER and I'm 62 years young, I am married, 2 grown kids, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

I have been a Lung Cancer Survivor for 8+ Years now. and... I was diagnosed last week with Cancer again. I had non-small cell Lung Cancer last time, had 2/3 rds of my right lung removed, then chemo and hair loss and terrible nerve damage in my feet and legs. I am also COPD. I can't believe I am going through this again.

This time around I also have Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

OK... here's the update: 07/25/2013.

***** New Cancer Saved My Life *****

My surgeon is having me take another test next week to see if he can remove the rest of my lung. It takes a couple hours and your under a large camera thing and it will tell him if I have enough breathing in that one good lung to have the other one removed. He believes I have 75% in my good lung. And if so, I will have the rest of the lung removed.

Now, if I can't then he will take just a piece, the cancer, out. and leave the rest of the lung.

Here's the BEST part:

My cancer that I had 8 years ago did NOT return. He told me that when cancer returns a second time it will come back metastasized to other parts of your body to the point of no treatment will be for you. He said he would have had to tell me I would be going to heaven. that was His Exact Words!

He said I have a NEW CANCER, the new cancer can be removed and NO CHEMO. The Surgeon told me that the New Cancer actually saved my life. Because old cancer that returns, metastasizes, new cancer is in only one spot in my lung and can be surgically removed.

Now, here is what the outcome is:

1. Surgery, remove the rest of the cancer = I can live till I'm 112 years old. NO CHEMO

2. Surgery, remove partial (just the cancer and a little lung) = I can live till I'm 100 years old. NO CHEMO

3. No Surgery, have radiation & Chemo = I can live Maybe 1 to 10 years.

He asked me how long would I like to live to and I told him till I was 112 years old. That's where he came up with that number. lol He was awesome.

He did say though that because of my age and having this surgery 8 years ago, that It will be more painful and won't heal as fast. He said he won't lie to me that it will be horrible this time around.

He also stressed that I loose all this weight. He said this is not good for me at all. He said tomorrow morning make sure I stick to this diet and DO NOT STOP until I'm a Healthy Weight. He said it is CRUCIAL that this weight comes off. It is now a matter of life and death for me.He told me that being over weight like this is also going to make the surgery harder for him. And all the skin tissue from the last surgery 8 years ago is also making it harder for him too.

He said that after this surgery, I could never have surgery again if it ever came back. No One can have this surgery on their lungs a third time.

so, if they do take the rest of the lung out, I have to be very careful the rest of my life of getting pneumonia, he said having one lung and I get pneumonia and my lung collapses, I will die instantly. when I get a cold or feel my chest is wheezy or what ever, go to the hospital right away so they can give me meds for the pneumonia.

I'm so happy. I Thank God it was a New Cancer, or I would not be here for long. Now I can relax and look forward to a healthy wonderful happy future with my family and all my new spark friends.

NEW CANCER SAVED MY LIFE.... emoticon

My Breast Cancer was Estrogen Positive, that knowledge lead me to dropping my weight as well. Keep in touch with us and ask at any time what you need to know. Hello everyone! I'm a breast cancer survivor for 1 year & 6-1/2 months & counting. I am here at SP because one of my doctors very kindly & gently told me that estrogen is stored in your fat cells & that if I could get this weight off while I'm on Tamoxifen, I have an amazing chance of the cancer never coming back. Duh!!! Light bulb moment!!! Slowly but surely, this weight is taking a flying leap. emoticon

Blessings,
Nillapepsi (Sheila) :-)

Hello everyone!
I just realized I posted my intro in the wrong thread, so I will repost it here.

Thank you for the invite to the team Marj!

My story is on my Sparkpage, but I will give a brief introduction here. I am living with stage IV breast cancer with bone mets. I've been on chemo for a little over 3 years now. My current chemo is Abraxane, which I started about 4 weeks ago. I will probably lose my hair on this one, but so far, it hasn't started coming out yet. I am also on Zometa, which is a drug for the bones.

I am single, and a "mom" to two very spoiled indoor cats. I had to quit working in November 2008 because of my health issues. Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, and living with Stage IV breast cancer since 2007.

Hi, My name is Jeannie. I live in SE Florida. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had a lumpectomy and lymph node dissection done on 12/10. Thank God the lymph node was negative and they were able to get the lump and surrounding tissue clean. Today I am seeing the surgeon for a follow up visit. I see a radiology oncologist on the 10th. I will find out for sure what the course of action is, but so far they are saying 6 weeks of radiation along with 5 years of meds. I'm glad I found this team. I know the support given to each other will be amazing. I hope all of you are doing well and heading for a cancer-free life! emoticon

Hi, my name is Elvie and I am a seven year breast cancer survivor. After so many years I still have side effects from the chemo and the surgeries. I am glad I found a group that understands.

Thanks, I am just new to this site. I am still in shock over my grandmother and in fear for my great aunt. Cancer seems to run in my family so my fear is my mother is next. I guess that's what started a healthier movement in my family. But to all dealing with cancer, I pray and wish you the best of luck, those that survived you are an inspiration! To those that grieve *big hug*.

Hello my name is Jenni, my great aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer a month after my grandmother lost her battle with Colon cancer last year. She had her breast removed and is still doing chemo. If anyone knows of a group for Colon Cancer as well please send me a link. I am happy my aunt is reacting better to treatment than my grandmother did.

Hi I am Susan and live in Germany. I had breast cancer surgery in April, 2012 and another surgery last week due to healing problems from the first surgery. I know that fear.

My sister had her third cancer diagnosed just before mine was found. One foot in front of the other, sister. Keep moving forward. I wish you all the best. My Sister and I have won through so far and you will too. We know so much more everyday! emoticon emoticon

Welcome, Lynette. I am so very sorry to hear about your best friend's cancer coming back. If she beat it once, she must have a lot of fight in her and I hope she can beat it again! Please know that you are not alone and we are here to support you. emoticon

I am also very sorry to hear about your family members who have passed away due to cancer. Sadly, cancer touches many of us in many ways.

Perhaps, you've seen this before, but sometimes it has comforted me:

What Cancer Cannot Do - By Unknown

Cancer is so limited . . .
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot eat away peace.
It cannot destroy confidence.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot shut out memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot reduce eternal life.
It cannot quench the Spirit.

My name is Lynette and my best friend just got word today that her endometrial cancer is back.

My mother died of ovarian cancer in 1996 and her mother of lung cancer (despite being a non smoker) in 1994. Mom's paternal grandmother died of cancer in 1948, so I've always had the threat of cancer looming.

My friend joined SP, but to my knowledge she hasn't done anything much since.

I'm hoping to find out more about what she can and can't do while undergoing chemo.

I encouraged my friend to go in to be checked when she first mentioned being in pain to me back in December. Apparently people told her her pain was due to irritable bowel syndrome which started manifested itself while undergoing radiation. She has no insurance and is underemployed and as a result (like many, my mother included) avoid going in to get checked when the problem is smaller and easier treated.

I'm on disability myself and my friend was appointed by Social Security to be my rep payee, so I've depended on her a lot over the years. Also, my car died last Thanksgiving, and she has been my sole means of transportation for major shopping trips. I don't want to be a burden, she needs to concentrate on herself.

So I'm feeling major anxiety about what happens next. Mom went through three cancer surgeries and was in so much pain. I don't want to lose my friend.

Hi fellow warriors,

I'm Caroline. I was recently diagnosed advanced localized breast cancer/IBC. My IBC also presented with a tumor over 7 cm. I am ER/PR negative, her2 positive. It's a very aggressive cancer (grade 3) and came on virtually overnight. My most recent mammogram had been only 9 months prior and there was no sign of it then. The biopsy of the tumor and sentinel node came back positive, but the body scan showed no spread. I was able to get on a drug trial for a target treatment combo of Tykerb and Herceptin. Both combined have been producing great results with a 12 week regiment, but now they are trying to increase the percent of success by increasing the duration of treatment to 24 weeks. (I drew the long straw, yeah!). This means I can postpone the surgery for 6 months will they try to shrink the tumor down. After surgery I'll get a 5 week break before going on chemo. I'm not sure if I have to do 6 months of chemo or less. I guess it will depend on outcome from the surgery. After the chemo I'll have 6 1/2 weeks of radiation and also will resume the Herceptin infusions for 6 more months.

This is my second time to have breast cancer. The first time in 2004 was on my other breast but was stage 0. I had a lumpectomy followed by radiation. I used to joke about that episode as cancer-lite (because I didn't have to undergo chemo), so I suppose what I have now is extra-strenght.

I have a long year ahead of me.

Thanks for the welcomes JulieAnn & WhisperingPine. It's a wet rainy day & my knees are acting up from the old arthritis & all the new usage. I know that in time it will feel better & won't bother me as much...especially with each pound I lose & the weight not being on my knees. I'm drinking a big glass of water right now before I go out to do some things. I hope everyone is having a good Saturday!!!

Good Morning! I am Mo & new to this board. I've been on SP for quite awhile but haven't used it in almost as long. LOL! I was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer in Dec 09. Treatments are all done...surgeries all done (hopefully). Now I'm trying to get my life back together & being fitter & healthier is a GIANT piece of my personal puzzle.

I want to learn how top put cute things on my post...like weight loss goals & things. I want to get to know people to give as well as receive support on this journey.

TGIF!
Mo

Hi, I'm Katie and i'm 33 years old, I am trying to lose weight and get fit, I go walking everyday and go on my exercise bike / keep fit class every day. I will be starting the gym later on this month. I've been on sparks for a couple of months now and have lost a few pounds already I think the best way I do it is to just have 3 meals a day totalling 1200-1500 calories and it works! I look forward to getting to know everyone here! Katie x

---Jen, Nice to meet you and I'm sorry to hear about your cancer, I hope the new diet is not to difficult for you, lots of love to you.

Hi! My name is Jen, thanks for the invite WHISPERINGPINE6! I live with Thyroid Cancer and am actually getting ready for the radioactive iodine therapy, which means I'm doing a special diet of no chocolate or dairy (boohoo). It also excludes seafood but that's okay cause ick hehe. I have two little girls, one four months the other four years and a crazy husband. I'm also a graduate student studying to be a mental health counselor for children (wish me luck!) :P Be well everyone and it's nice to meet you!

Welcome, Debbie! I'm glad to have you here and I wish you all the best. I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. To answer your question, each person's journey with cancer is different, but in my experience, it's not abnormal for things to move quickly at times. Please know you are not alone and we are here to support you. I look forward to getting to know you more. emoticon

Hi, my name is Debbie.
It is nice to be a part of your team. Thank you Whisperingpine4, Marj for your invitation.
I found a bump on my throat a couple of months ago, I told my doctor 2 weeks ago, he sent me for the ultrasound that afternoon. This Monday I had the biopsy.
It shows precancerous. I will be going next week to see the Hematology/Oncologist for him to talk to me about the biopsy results then I'll see a Otolaryngology/Oncologist Surgeon. They are moving fast it seems to me. Is this normal?
My doctor said I will have the Thyroid taken out.
Blessing & Thanks,
hugs & smiles,
Debbie

Hi! My DH and I are both cancer survivors. He had prostate surgery 2 1/2 years ago and has remained cancer free since that time. My robotic total hysterectomy was 2 years ago this January. I also had 8 weeks of radiation. I am living in faith that we both remain cancer free.
