I think we have a troll - the person posting the adverse information has showed up in various places on SparkPeople under three different names.

While crossfit can definitely be dangerous if you attend an affiliate that is not responsible and ensures that you are not working over your capacity, that is not the typical case. as with any exercise over-exertion can be detrimental and at times fatal.

Rhabdo is a result of degeneration of the skeletal muscles causing damaged muscle cells to release into the blood stream, and can be caused by ANY exercise if it is done improperly, particularly when first starting a new exercise or when exercising in high heat or humidity.

The university of Iowa had 13 players on their team hospitalized with rhabdo just this year, and I work with the military and have spoken with quite a few soldiers who have gotten it during basic training. Should we stop everyone from playing football and joining the military too?

As with anything, Crossfit needs to be done in a structured and safe manner to prevent any injury.

Just wanted to make sure that everyone here is aware of how dangerous Crossfit can be. I had a friend that was starting to do it, but I was FINALLY able to talk them out of getting too involved when I showed them this article. After that, they didn't want their gym to be connected with that organization.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/22/fashion/thursdaystyles/22Fitness.html

Mr. Glassman, CrossFit's founder, does not discount his regimen's risks, even to those who are in shape and take the time to warm up their bodies before a session.

"It can kill you," he said. "I've always been completely honest about that."

Welcome new cross fitters!! I would encourage to have lots of patience with yourself and your progress. I have been going 5 months now and am amazed with how steady my progress has been. I am a on Paleo so I can let you know what I do. I like it because I have no sweet tooth when I eat Paleo and I just don't feel that I need to eat so much in general. I also seem more relaxed. Honestly, I do eat white potatoes which is not true Paleo and some dairy.

Joined a Crossfit gym on monday.

Yesterday was my first class:

Warmup
500m row, 25 squat jumps, 25 v-ups, 5 min headstand/handstand practice.

Workout
Something Like Tabata
Clean and Jerk @ 3/4 bodyweight, Burpee-Pullups

Cooldown
1 min seated hip and back stretch
1 min cobblers pose
1 min ass to ankles squat
1 min tricep stretch

It was a HARD workout.

I am totally sore today but look forward to tonights workout. (which I posted on the WOD board).

Ive been trying to loose this weight for 2 years now and have not given up. Althrough my progress has been slow and inconsistant, i pride myself in not throwing in the towel. I know I can do this!

Hello my name is Lesli. I am going to try to do the WOD from home. I am out of shape strengthwise. I can't afford to go to a crossfit place so I am going to attempt to do workouts at home. Any hints would be great.

Hello! I'm new to Crossfit. I've never been to a class. I am starting a Crossfit bootcamp in May (next week) It is 3 days a week for 4 weeks. I'm a little nervous, but looking forward to it. Not sure what to expect. I am currently learning to run and I'm on W3D2 of a Couch to 5K program. My plan is to continue that during bootcamp and I've signed up to run a 5K in June. I have not been physiclly active the way I should for years. It's definately time! I am also working on eating healthy and curious about paleo eating, as Justin, my Crossfit coach kept mentioning. I would love any thoughts and/or advice anyone has to offer.
Any tips would be appreciated! This is new to me and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and lost. I'm very excited!

Hey fellow CrossFitters! My name is Angie and I've been doing CF for almost 2 years now. I currently help teach beginner CF classes at our box and the owner wants me to become certified sometime this summer. Just have to find a cert that is doable with our schedule.

I've been posting on the CrossFit board here at SparkPeople for quite a while. I guess once I found that board, I never looked any further to find this one! From what I've seen, it looks like a very supportive group of women here! YAY!

I look forward to getting to know some of you a little better. Some of you, I already know from the other group. :)

Hi everyone looking for buddies to keep me on track. I have motivated people but find that when I need the motivation there's no one. I have severe cramps during my cycle I find that weight lifting elevates this. I was on birth control for a while but this just makes you fat! Now that I am off I want to feel renewed again.

I will not support the fat!!

Hi. I'm a stay-at-home mom looking to lose the extra weight I've been carrying around for too many years. I lost 30 lbs previously by changing my diet and exercising. I regained 10 lbs since last summer when I hurt my back (and then subsequent laziness). Now, I've started back and I'm ready to continue my journey and I think Crossfit would be a good way to effectively jump start my weight loss. I just completed my first week of On Ramp.

Health first, vanity a very close second.

Weight Loss Goals/Rewards:
5 lbs - new shoes
10 lbs - 'Pretty Day'
15 lbs - white jeans
20 lbs - cosmetic procedure (not what you think!)
25 - new bikini

Hi everyone. I came across the CrossFit website searching for new activities to do and really want to get started. We have a couple of affiliates in the area but right now I can't afford the cost. I plan on doing the WOD's at home using the scaled workouts on brandx website.

Hi everyone - I attended my very 1st crossfit class last night. It was tough but I got through it ... not gracefully but I did get through. We had a "team competition" type of thing .... each team of four had to row 3000m before moving on - I did 800m, then we moved on to box jumps (I did steps - 30 of them), then onto kettle ball swings (30 lbs I think, maybe 20lbs, but 30 swings), then 30 pushups (scaled to pushups from knees), this all followed by lungewalking with 25lb plate held overhead and then 25 burpees ..... my burpies were pathetic and I practically broke down in the middle of them but I fought through. I was a wreck when it was over. The other ladies in the class said if they had hit that night for their first night they would never have gone back so I guess I did okay!!! My team did come in last, thanks to me. I did feel bad about that but they didn't seem to care.

I am pretty darn sore today and have yet to do my WOD (Complete 5 rounds for time of: 7 overhead squats, 14 box jumps and 21 sit-ups). I will have to scale that down and to this at home tonight as I have no way to get to the gym.

Looking forward to seeing how my strength improves over time. I think once I feel a bit more adequate I am really going to enjoy crossfit!!!

Hi everyone! My name is Rebekah or Bekah for short. I was happy to find this team because I love, LOVE CrossFit! I'm back on SP after a few months hiatus with a new attitude and renewed motivation! In the past I was a co-leader of a CrossFit team and co-leader with BNSPIRD on another team where we challenged each other often with some fun WODs.

The strength of attitude and the 'can do' spirit of women doing CrossFit really inspires me.

Currently I'm doing an official WOD on Saturdays with a group of women from the Fabulous Fitness team who enjoy the challenge and I can usually fit one into my regular training schedule during week.

So glad to be here! If any of you are interested in our growing group doing Saturday WOD challenges, you are welcome to play along!

Hi Everyone!.. I was just introduced to this site, and have slowly been getting the hang of it. I have been Crossfitting for just over a year I have been amazed at my progress. Over the holidays, I slacked and I definitely can tell the difference, I feel like I am starting over. I also have been active in Bellydancing for over a decade. I have taken classes and performed all around my local area. As far as nutrition? Well that is where I have a the BIGGEST struggle. Food and I have been enemies for years, well it is time I mended fences and become friends with a healthier way of eating & thinking!

Hi everyone...I've been an on again, off again CF'r for about 4yrs...now full time since my husband opened a box last June. It's been a long battle but I've finally realized that at 42, my nutrition plays a bigger roll than my physical fitness. So today is a new beginning in my training and diet. I would love to become certified so I can help my husband out once and a while. Wish me luck.

I just did a consult at the local CrossFit gym. My baseline took 8min43sec...a bit slower than intermediate level. I'm pretty proud of that, considering how much weight I need to lose.

I am excited to join this community of supportive athletes. I think this will be the way for me to reach my goals, and to continue to push myself. And, I am excited that there are CrossFit forums on SP so I can extend that community and get even more support.

Hey ladies, CrossFit sounds awesome! I've never done it before, but I've heard a lot about it so I finally did some research about it. It looks incredibly tough, which to me, sounds like a blast! I don't have the equipment and neither does the rec center at my school, though. I found an affiliate gym in town and it looks like an awesome place, but I have no idea how expensive it is. They do a free introduction class and strongly encourage people to come in and check it out. I'm a little intimated, though, do you think I should go for it?

Not sure how this works. My sister is a spark member and thought I would look into it. It seems to motivate her....thought I would check it out. I am newly married and lifetime ww member but have gain a few pounds....and recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees and can no longer run, or do any weights with my legs. So, as I used to run and lift weights this has been an adjustment. I will be fine. But I desire to get strong and fit again. My husband and I did a 100k bike race and it was a blast and not so bad on my knees....but I still desire to challenge my self more and loose those extra pounds I recently put on within the last year or so.

Welcome to you! Diet - what you put in your mouth- really is about 80% of the equation in health and fitness.

I have to admit, I was very resistant to the paleo at first - no way was I giving up my multi-grains and yogurt! But then my chiropractor began preaching the "anti inflammatory diet" (which is very similar), in addition to my trainer preaching the paleo diet. Someone was going to have to stop being so stubborn and give in - and it appeared it was going to have to be me!

Truth be known, it really hasn't been that bad to follow. When you think about it, it's much easier - it is just plain and simple food. And I do feel much better - not bloated and more alert.

It would be worth trying - you might be pleasantly surprised as I was. It makes me wonder why I was so resistant in the first place!

Hi, my husband is really into crossfit and it is really working for him, so I am jumping on the bandwagon.

I am beginning a Paleo eating style (started yesterday), I do kettlebells, and I swim. I know there is a lot more to crossfit than this, but it is a start. I am eager to learn more.

I went paleo for 2 month and felt great. Fell off the crossfit and paleo wagon from christmas eve to Jan 1st - I feel like crap - I went paleo for an experiment to solve several of my medical issues and it was working - 1 week of eating poorly and not exercising any many of my symptoms returned - So went back to the gym yesterday and working towards regaining control over my eating - went shopping tonight to prepare for the week. My goal for the new year is to eat clean, continue to exerise and do all I can to remain pain free...Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year.

I am so excited there is a CrossFit Women's spark team! I just joined sparkpeople with a group of old college friends. We thought it would be a good way to motivate each other from all over the country.

Anyways, I started crossfitting in May, and I love it. I have always been active, played lots of sports growing up and through college until grad school Then the pound started packing on.

Before crossfit, I was one of those chronic cardio people getting no where fast!

Since may I have lost 15 lbs since starting CrossFit and 14 inches. I just started 90 days of strict paleo because I realized it is now important to get serious about my nutrition.

I would of rather tried and failed then to have never tried at all.

Hi there! Thanks to PMCOPPI10 for inviting me here!! I am a SAHM of 5 (almost 11, almost 8, 4 and 2yo twins). We live in Alberta, Canada and I have the great privilege of home schooling our kids!

I have always loved working out! This is my third time losing lots of weight... after baby 2, 3 and the twins! I started last Jan. and have lost almost 60lbs. so far plus a LOT of fat and many, many inches! I had to start out really slow because of having a double c-section with the twins and just being so super busy!

BUT! back in April, I found SP and from there, my journey has taken quite a fun turn! I soon found another group here that introduced me to CF and I was totally hooked- my husband too!! We don't have a tonne of weights (yet) but have made do with what we have! The last few months, the group I was part of cooled off a lot, plus, not having all the weights and it turning to winter, well, CF has been put on the back burner. Joining a gym just isn't in the cards right now- money is some of it, but mostly the time. So, for now, I am doing what I can at home. My workouts have changed about 180 degrees from even a few months ago. I love HIIT and Tabata for Cardio and do a lot more ST!

For my nutrition, I am carb cycling. I started this over a month ago and I love it! It has made such a huge difference in my life!

Well... one thing you will find about me- I love to chat and can be long winded!! I'm so excited to be here and get to know you all more!

yay! for 2011 being the best year yet!

Welcome to the Team, Connie. Tire flips sure are fun. Sorry that your wrist is giving you trouble but it's better to heal up nice and strong than having a nagging injury.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

Hi. Crossfit member since May 2010. Main goal is to finish all workouts. Can't do too many as prescribed but am excited when there is one now and then. I still run real slow but at least I now know I will eventually finish without needd a defibulator. I am usually the last to finish but again, excited that I finish. I am awesome at tire flips - can beat most of the men at this task lol. I hurt my wrist this summer doing a pushup at home - hasn't been the same since and effects all my weight lifting that requires a clean - but each month it is a little better - in time I hope it returns to normal because my weight load is low when having to clean - again still happy I can modify and finish... Go ladies....

Greetings CrossFit Women!

This is Linae and I hail from St. Petersburg, FL.

I just joined SparkPeople as a way to lose these last 10 lbs and was thrilled to see a group for CrossFit women. So, do y'all post about WODs or challenges or ???

My husband and I have been members of CrossFit St. Pete since July 2009. I'm an endurance triathlete and runner who enjoys Crossfit HQ workouts as a fun form of strength training.

This year my goals were to lose 10lbs, Rx as many WODs as possible and finish a marathon in under 4 hours. I'm down 5 lbs. The marathon was a little harder than I thought (only 4:31 at Philly), but I've finally mastered the kipping pullup and a few doubleunders which led to a new stable of WODs I can Rx like Cindy, Annie, and most recently, Fran. Fun stuff.

Anyway, hope to hear more from the group.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

Hi Ladies,
My name is Patty. I am from Covina, Calif.
I am 53. I and my husband do Crossfit workouts 3 nights a week. We have been members of Crossfit Laverne for one year. I fractured my radius bone in April diving face first on a walk/jog and had to downscale to Curves which was boring compared to Crossfit. August I was able to Crossfit again.

I am quite weak and have modified workouts.
I did impress myself in the past two weeks at small victories.
I can jump on a 12' box where I only could stepup and down prior. Wednesday I deadlifted 158 pounds.
This was a huge victory for me.
The best is my cardio improvement as I can jog longer and farther than a year ago.

My crossfit reccomends Paleo. I am not sure what eating program to follow and find myself frustrated with no weight loss. Open to suggestions.

Also, I have been tracking my fitness workouts as 60 minutes of aerobics I don't know how else measure Crossfit workouts.
I am excited to meet you and hoorah for being CrossFit Women!!!

Patty

Healthier Hoye Family.

5K Your way walk/jog program.

Team Jenny.

I'm a Crossfit junkie! I started about 5 years ago, but went to a cheaper gym for a while. Missed it like crazy! I'm actually doing a group bootcamp class 3x a week, rather than the WOD. Same exercises, but a bit longer and more social, as you are working out with the same people each time. I love extreme workouts. And I like the fact that at Crossfit, a strong, muscular woman is not a freak, but a success!

Today I will do what you won't...So tomorrow I can do what you can't

Crossfit can be done at any fitness level because it can be scaled. It does not matter your weight or BMI because any workout that you can not do can be substituted for a workout that you can. Most of my workouts are scaled because of either injury (I have chronic shin splints) or not being able to (one day I WILL be able to do a pull up! lol). Trust me it is just as hard though!!! I would suggest if you are going to supplement crossfit with other workouts you attend crossfit first and see how you feel.

Thanks Crossfitgirl and Lissieone. I would like to know exactly what it entails? Should I wait until I've lost some fat first or is it gonna help along with my spinning...Thanks

I am 24 years old and I live in North Eastern PA. I am married with children and attend a crossfit gym nearby since August 18th. Since then I have lost 30lbs following a good nutrition plan and vigorous crossfit workouts. I go four times a week, M T TH F, at seven in the morning and work on my iffy parts at home. I took a week long hiatus from dieting and fitness because I got sick and gained 3 lbs, but lost it quickly, which makes me assume it was mostly water weight. I got back into the swing of things again this week and am feeling great again.

Excellent.. what do you want to know?
One thing you should know about crossfit is that it is scalable so no matter what your fitness level is you will be able to do it and it is fun!!

Reply here to introduce yourself!

I'll start -
I am 28 years old. From Canada. I was previously a part-owner and trainer of a CrossFit affiliate. Personal reasons caused me to leave the affiliate and stop training. I am not getting back into CrossFit. I have always loved crossfit as a training protocol for women as it focuses more on fitness and strength accomplishments than those on the scale.
I have the following certifications:
Crossfit Level 1 Certified, CrossFit Gymnastics, CrossFit Nutrition, Crossfit basic barbell, CrossFit Olympic Lifting, CrossFit Movement and Mobility, Level 1 Nccp trained technical olympic weightlifting coach
