Hi, Laurance, glad to have you with us, see you an I are about the same age. My husband is 76 an at present rehabing from a broken hip with surgery done in Jan. of this year. To say the least Caregiving is very tiring. My caregiving spans 24/7 an at times it is hard for me to get some ME TIME.

Join us in the Chat Room when you can. You will find many of us there, if for nothing else sometimes to Vent, or hunt for answers or just to catch some time with others going through the same thing. Again glad to have you with us an hope to see you in the chat-room often.

Michele

I'm tired from caregiving, and I figured there might be a Spark Team for caregivers, and sure enough, there is. I'm 70, and taking care of a partner who is 61 but who looks and acts much older, with both physical and mental issues.

Sounds like you and your brother have a Plan in motion.
Seems as if communication may be a problem if so, many business handling home health equipment and care supplies also carry communication Boards. Then again you can make one very easily by : getting some poster board ( from office supply stores or art stores ), cutting pictures out and gluing them on the board. Pictures like: food, glass of water or other beverage, blanket, pillow etc. Is your Mom okay with her hearing and vision? Grandchildren and great grandchildren like to do projects, give that I try also.

Dianne......hope everything is going well with you and DH. Got mine out for a meal today at Ruby Tuesday's. Turned out great, he talked with many people he had worked with when on the Police Force and Security at Sara Lee's after he retired. He is much happier tonight then he has been over the last three months.......... I'm not really ready for another week, but I can not change that. Keep in touch.

I'm not sure how I will fit a dating in with taking care of mom, being at home with my family and being with friends. My brother and I take care of her so we both take time for ourselves. We have a one person who comes in 3 times a week to help one of us put her to bed so that the other person can have the night off and then we have one person who comes in a morning a week so I can go home and not get up 4:30 to drive 45 minutes to help get her up in the morning. I do need to contact the agency in NH about arranging for senior companions so that I could take some time to myself. Thanks Michelle you asked questions that made me think about solutions rather than just thinking and feeling sorry for myself emoticon . Because mom is paralyzed she needs help with toileting and showers, in and out of bed. She can't speak to tell us what she wants and has been in speech therapy recently but she hasn't really responded to that. We are working on a communication book this week. So part of the dating thing is, well time management and of course meeting someone you are attracted to.

Glad to see you posting. I'm curious, why say: you are not ready to date? Is it because you would be leaving MOM? Caregiving is not an easy task, even though that task is done for love of the person. Do you have any help, that could give you some time to yourself a couple times a week? Try to find someone because you will need some help. How much care does your mother need? Could you try for some assistance from a Home Health Agency for a couple hours a week? Let us know just what care she needs and perhaps we can help you get organized and give you some suggestions for some outside assistance.

It's tough I don't know how I will date again. I have been on one date but I realized I wasn't ready. I guess the timing wasn't right.

Thanks, that is why I looked for Caregivers. Sometimes I just don't say anything because I don't want people to take me the wrong way. I am very grateful that I have my Mom alive but she is far from the person she was a year ago.

Hi and welcome to the team. It seems weird to say that because this is not a team you would like to be in. But it is great to have the extra support from its members. My dh has terminal lung cancer and we are waiting for a bed in a palliative care home.

Chat with you later

Dianne

Oh honey, I am so sorry for all the personal losses you've had to live through. Although I've loss a child, a sister, a brother and a dad, I was not a caregiver to any of them (well except my son). My mom is 90 and has lived with us for almost 10 years. I think the biggest thing that can help you is knowing there are others out there doing what you do. Hopefully, no for sure, you will get some good advice here, but even more than that, some good ol' caring yourself.

My mom is 85 and had a very dense stroke. She is paralyzed on her right side and has aphasia and apraxia. This isn't my first time as being a caregiver. I helped my mom take care of my stepdad on weekends for six months when he was dying of pancreatic cancer and then in 2009 my husband was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer. Rick was so strong and didn't ask me to help him very much. He died six months after he was diagnosed.
