My husband (DH) has CP as well :). My DH was a lot like your uncle- after he learned to walk on his own at age 7, he was able to walk on his own for years, until he was 13 and in a serious car accident. He had to re-learn how to do everything, but unfortunately has never been able to regain the ability to walk unaided. and now, he has back problems added to the mix. But he still won't quit doing what he can :)!
anywho, i hope and pray your unlce will be able to regain all his strength and abilities. I've seen what it's like when that doesn't/ can't happen :(.

Well, thank you very much for your warm welcome! I am pretty new to the caregiver role. I've only been doing this for 3 years, so I'm a newbie! Mom and Dad (Terry's mom and dad- my grandparents) took care of him for 55 years and took him everywhere they went! I, however, am still adjusting to everything. I know caring for a loved one as long as you have must take a toll on you and him, both. I hope you get to take some time out for yourself every once in a while, because it sounds like you have a full time job with this. : )
What a blessing you and your family are to take in your uncle and take care of him. I am glad he is in rehab until it is safe for him to come home. He needs his strength back and they can get him into a good routine for you.
I take care of my DH who had a stroke almost ten years ago and that takes up a lot of my day. He is pretty independent now and for that I am grateful! Good Luck!

Hi! My name is Kim Cowan. I am a caregiver to my Uncle Terry. He is 57 years old and has cerebral palsy. He lives with my husband and daughter and me in Tennessee. Right now, Terry just got out of the hospital for colon reattachment surgery and a hernia repair. He is VERY weak from being in a hospital bed for 9 days, and is currently at a rehab facility. He may be there for a few weeks until he is able to come home.
Terry was able to walk unassisted with a walker before his surgeries started in March. We are hoping that he will get back to that point or close to it by the time he comes back home. He is very sweet natured, and is relatively easy to care for because of that. Of course, things may change when he comes home - but we hope not!
