I was just wondering the same thing about a hoyer lift! THe main problem with them is having the room to move them about, though...

Another though might be to see if someone that is a nurse couldn't come in and make sure you're lifting safely/ propely/ the easiest way possible (if that hasn't already been done).

First Diane CONGRATS on the 32 years of Marriage!!! WHAT STRENGHT YOU have!!!! I sure can learn something from YOU!!

Have you ever thought about a "Hoyer Lift"? I am not sure if I spelled it correctly. I had a friend that lived in CA that his family used one to lift him in and out of bed to his wheelchair as He was paralyzed from the neck down.

So glad you are here! WE sure can use your wisdom!

Diane,

Hi! Well, as the ones posted before me, YOU are not alone!

My situation is a little different: I CHOSE to get be a caregiver (NOT knowing what all I was getting into). I met my husband, Michael on Match.com (yes, on the computer!!) We got married 5 months later. When we met, He was able to walk (a little better now-because He wasn't so heavy) with a WALKER, and had his manual wheelchair in the van. I would have to get the wheelchair in and out and push him around. GOSH THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!! I can remember a few times after he left to travel home (we lived 3 1/2 hours apart) I would cry; not only for missing him, but wondering if I could do this. Well, 5 years into it, I'm here for LIFE! I love my husband. He is in a wheelchair except for going to the bathroom, showering and sleeping. We have made many adjustments. Not long after we were married He hurt his arm, so I had to dress him. I still dress him now, because He has gained too much weight to do it himself, and some of that is my fault. Anyway....it wasn't until just recently where we found it is easier to dress him while HE is sitting on his shower bench. This way HE has his shoes on and he walks to the sink. HE is worse then an old man when walking. Walking 3 feet to the sink takes him at least 3 minutes.

Feel free to ask questions!

It's not easy being a caregiver, I know. I also work outside the HOME working 12 hours a WEEK, being a caregiver. CALL me STUPID! The lady I work for really tries my patience and the sad thing is, she is to be a Christian. I can only deal with her for a few hours so I work: Mon, Tues 4pm-8pm and Wed. 1:30-5:30, by the time WED comes around, I'm ready to get out of there. Mainly we clean her house, do odd and end jobs for her (stupid things- actually), get her ready for church if it's a church night, cook her something for dinner and FEED her. She stays alone by herself at night.

Sorry for babbling on.

Welcome Diane! You've come to the right place! There are SO many wonderful and supportive people on this team. I should know, I was ready to jump off a bridge about a year ago when I first joined this team for help and support. Being a care giver is exhausting! And, not just physically! Unless someone has been a caregiver, I don't think they have a clue how hard it is.

If I have any advise for you it is just to take it one day at a time. Breathe in and breathe out. Find a way to take some time for yourself even if it means finding someone to "watch" your husband for a few hours. And, most of all, ASK FOR HELP! I know, sometimes that is the hardest part!

If you need any ideas for resources to help, just post your questions or needs here and I'm sure someone will have some ideas on how you can get the help you need! They had some wonderfully helpful ideas for me!

Hang in there!

Lynn

Welcome to our team! YEs, this caregiving thing can be very hard! (had a few days of cryong myself).
While my situation is different than your (I'm 31 and caregiver for my husband, who has had cerebral plasy since birth), I really do understand how hard it is.
You've come to the right place! and, I know there is at least one person on this team who understands very well what you are going through...

Take Care,
Becky

He was in a coma for 31/2 months. He is paralized on his left side.I think that I have been doing OK with this, but sometimes I cant stop crying. It gets real hard ,But I know he cant make it without me. I hope to here from you all, with some help on this matter.Thank you all, Diane emoticon
