emoticon Hello, SparkTeachers! My name is Lorna. I'm glad to find this team of kindred spirits. Although I joined SP in late June, I haven't had the "luxury of time" to explore SparkTeams and the zillion other pages on SP. I've been helping my husband run two summer schools - two more weeks to go! New health and fitness goals have actually imposed a good balance with my busy days at school.

I am a retired, recycled, and rehired (part-time) Texas teacher. My passion is small-group intervention work with children in grades 2-5. I believe in the whole theme of "The Spark": never lose that enthusiasm for learning, personal improvement, collaborating, and mentoring kids. I look forward to sharing and many meaningful discussions with you!

emoticon 3SUSIE to the team! I suspect most teachers, especially early childhood, have to keep things in order to survive the chaos of a roomful of little ones. I taught Kindergarten for years and loved it; however, everything had to be organized so I could teach effectively. Your health should be a high priority! How can you help the little ones if you are not healthy? You made a good choice in evaluating the situation and applying a solution.

Hi I am 3Susie. Three is my favorite number and that is why it is at the beginning of my name.
I have been teaching forever. Presently I teach first grade, however I have also taught kindergarten. I am a work-alcoholic. Everything in my house and classroom must be perfect AND because of this attitude my health has suffered. Right now I am in the process of learning to LET-IT-GO and make my health a priority. It is exciting to see other teachers on this journey as well. emoticon I am looking forward to interacting more with the team.

Hi everyone! I just heard about this board from another teacher friend. I teach at university and have a son with severe, life threatening allergies, who is going into first grade. Needless to say I am nervous about the school year starting back up. We've been so lucky this summer to get in a good exercise schedule and good eating habits. I'm trying to plan, schedule and pre-stock the freezer to be ready.

My name is Tanya and I live in Georgia. I work in a Title 1 school that is currently around 90 % free and reduced lunch. I used to be the remedial math teacher. As of last year I became the Instructional Coach. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the position last year but the additional stress kept the pounds on. I hope to focus more on healthy eating for the 2015 - 2016 school year.

Kelly- Welcome to the group! I was sad when I read that one of your students passed away. I lost one of mine several years ago and it was an emotional time. She did have multiple disabilities but her death was completely unexpected. I don't think that people who are not teachers understand how much these children become "ours". Good luck to you on your journey towards health!

Hi, everyone! My name is Kelly, and I've been a member of this group for a while but have never been active. I teach junior high school ELA, and I had a rough year and did quite a bit of emotional eating after one of my students passed away. It was one of the most crushing things I have ever dealt with my entire life, and certainly in my career. Now, though, I'm feeling it's time to do right by myself and get back on track. This seems like a great group and I'm excited to start my journey with you! emoticon

Hi!
I'm Heather. I live in WA and teach elementary music in a school that is very multi-cultural. We have about 50 % free/reduced lunch, and 57 different languages are represented at our school. I have been teaching for about 3 years and I absolutely love it. It is what I was always meant to do, though I didn't start until I was 40.

Welcome Jessica. Read over all the stuff on this board and I think you will get lots of help in figuring out how to structure things. Start out small with just one certain thing per day and work your way up!

Hi. I'm Jessica. I'm new to the group. I'm a 1st grade teacher in WA state. I am trying to learn to be healthy and balanced. I find it so hard to eat healthy and workout as a teacher. I end up just snacking all day long because I can't sit and eat. I get home and I am starving and have papers to grade. I end up eating, watching TV and grading. I should be working out. Any tips any of you have would be amazing.

Hi! I work as a preschool teacher and teach 3 and 4 year old students. I just got engaged in Feb and want to look and feel my best for my upcoming wedding. My class is so sweet and encourages me to get my steps in each day. My girls all gave me hugs on Friday when I told them I had beat my walking goal by 1000 steps. emoticon

My goal right now is to lose 20 pounds by the time school starts back up. It didn't feel like a huge goal when I set it on the last day of school, but now with two months left, I'm feeling a little less sure of myself . . .

Glad to find a group of people that understand how tough it can be while trying to teach!

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Shannon here. I'm rejoining under a new SP name as I recommit to getting healthy again after a rough couple of years. I teach English and have taught middle school for most of my 13 years in education. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and finding some accountability partners on this journey! :)

Hi, I taught special need students for 27 years. Am now retired, I have a bad leg and unable to do much walking which has helped with my weight gain. I am trying to get more exercise with the seated videos on this site. They have really helped. I am also trying to cut portions. I enjoy this website and it is very motivating for me. So far since joining I have walked 2000 steps a day which for me is a huge amount and I have lost 22 pounds.

Hi all, I'm Julie a second year teacher at a rural school. I currently teach 4th grade but will be teaching 3rd grade next year. I've been on Spark for a while now but only started seriously losing weight last year. I've lost 50 pounds so far and I'm really buckling down to lose the last twenty. I'm looking forward to being more active in the community here!

Hi, everyone! I'm Amanda. I'm a fourth year high school English teacher at a small, rural(ish) school. I've been seriously working out since January (actually found my amazing gym on a snow day lol). Just joined Spark recently. I'm looking to lose weight and be more active and fit. I don't have a real weight loss goal per se, more I want to get fit! Looking forward to it!

Hi, my name is Yvonne, and I am a retired secondary special education teacher. I was a para before returning to college at age 47. I was teaching at Bellflower High School in CA for 5 years, before moving to AZ. I became very sick with Guillain Berre Syndrome (GBS) in 2005 and spent 35 days in the hospital and almost died. Once I was home and began to recover, I relized there was no way I could return to teaching, so I was forced to retire. I really miss the kids, but don't miss the stress of the job. I have one adult daughter, who is also a high school teacher at my old campus. I have one grandchild who is almost 4.

I have been a SP member since Jan.2015 and have lost 32 lbs since Nov. 2014.

Hi! My name is Sandi and I live in the Bay Area, California. I currently teach 3rd grade, but may have to update that! I have lost with Spark People a couple of years ago. Then allowed myself to forget that this is a lifestyle, it is forever. i love that you are all teachers because the stress of the job is a big reason I have been making up excuses. I know we will have similar stories and can help each other. Thank you. emoticon

Hi everyone. I'm Stacy and I live in Atkinson, Nebraska. I am a former Secondary Social Studies teacher. When we moved to Atkinson my husband became the elementary Principal and I am now a 5th-8th grade Para. I really like it because I still get to help kids but I don't have the stress of teaching. We have two little girls who are 8 and 4. The school that we are at is a PreK-12th grade so we are all in one building which is really nice.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be

Hello everyone! I'm not new to SP (though have recently returned after being away for a long time) but am new to this group and to teaching. Technically, I'm not yet a teacher, but am currently in school for a MAT for math and am in my last semester before student teaching. I will be doing some fieldwork in a school later this semester though.

Teaching will be a second career (if my first could even be called a career...) for me and I'm looking forward to taking a more active role in a field that is extremely important to me. I admit I am very concerned about the terrible political environment surrounding education right now, so I hope I'm not being naive in wanting to teach, but I really can't think of anything else I'd rather do! (Except for being an astronaut, but I'll start with teaching for now. :) )

I just rejoined the Spark this week. I was on a long time ago and it was a little successful but as with most things weight related in my life, I didn't maintain. I lost my job due to cutbacks and was unable to locate anything full time for two years after that. I ended up moving from Syracuse, New York to South Jersey. I teach in Philadelphia now. Just as things are starting to look up, I thought I should start paying attention to my health and fitness. So here I am.

Hi Andi!
Welcome (back) to sparkpeople. I'm on my 2nd round here, too. And this time, after being away for several years, I'm determined to get to know some people and meet my goals. I've been on every day for a couple of weeks, tracking food and water, and for me that is an important thing to keep up with!

Good luck to you on your weight loss goals. And on your studies, raising a 3-year-old, and definitely on keeping your 7th graders engaged while meeting CCSS (or whatever your state is using) requirements. I'm also a 7th grade teacher (reading). My year has been work, work, work! Lots of changes and a LOT of teacher hoops to jump through, but I have to admit--the students are making progress.

Take care!
Julie

I'm Andi! I'm 24 and I teach 7th grade English Language Arts in North Carolina.

I have a three year old son at home, and I'm a single mom. I'm also in graduate school, working on my Masters Degree in Library Science. Church is very important to me as well, so I'm involved there. Needless to say, I'm very busy. Between raising a rambunctious child, teaching 92 7th graders, graduate work, and Church, I don't have a lot of time for other activities.

This is not my first time on SparkPeople, but I hope it will be the time that sticks. I lost 40 lbs on here back in 2006-2007 under a different screenname, so I know it works. It's just a matter of making my health and fitness a priority.

I started back on SparkPeople last Friday, 1/9/15. I started at 196 lbs. In one week, I've already lost 4 lbs, which is very exciting to me! It's definitely good motivation! I have a total of 41 lbs to lose by June...so that just means I have 37 more to go! I can do this!

If anyone wants to team up and be exercise buddies/motivation buddies, let me know!

Hello!
I'm Julie--and I teach 7th grade Reading. (Wow, this kind of sounds like a recovery meeting announcement so far!)

I'm 54 and am completing my 33 year of teaching, with the last 15 being here in Hannibal, Mo, at the middle school. I love my 7th graders--somebody's gotta do it! But I have to say--I'm flustered by all of the extra work that has come my way over the past few years and it looks like there's a lot more on the horizon.

I've got 3 adult children (the 21 year old baby lives with me), two grandchildren (and another on the way), and one grandpuppy (who lives with his 21 year old owner--and me). I met the absolute love of my life after losing 40 pounds a couple of years ago. We got happy and I gained back 20. He gained back 33. Wonder if that means he's happier than I am? Lol. Anyway, we are both supporting each other in this healthier lifestyle and I'm so glad we are working on it together.

I'd love to make a few new teacher friends on here. So please feel free to friend me.

happy New Year to you!

Hello,I've probably introduced myself in the past but have not been good at being on here regularly. Hoping to make a change. I am a high school special ed resource room teacher. I am trying to lose weight. I have been using the Fitbit to keep track of steps and increase the amount of steps per day. My biggest issue is what I eat so I am making a resolution to keep track of the food I eat each day. It is really the only thing that has ever worked for me. School starts tomorrow after about an almost two week vacation. Sad that the time is up but excited to get back into a routine. I get very busy during the school week...I am a teacher leader at my school as well and so have to attend some additional meetings. I also have to attend those IEP meetings. I have a 15 year old son and husband as well to spend time with and three male kitties. I am worried about fitting time into my day to work out!

I am Ellen and I teache elementary gifted kids in a pull out enrichnemt program in 3 school. I officially began Spark last Monday but have struggled with the eating. At least I have now devoured all the holiday food that was left in the house so there is none left to tempt me! LOL I am recommitting today to tracking everything and being conscientious about ingesting healthy nutrition. Yes I want to lose weight but it's more about feeling good and eating to give my body the nutrients it needs. The exercise is easier for me as I have exercised daily for the past 30+ years. It's a deeply ingrained habit and that's what I want healthy eating to become. Getting back into a routine tomorrow will help except for all those teachers who dump their unwanted goodies in the lounge. emoticon

Hi. I am Heather. I teach grades 7-12 special education. I am hoping to lose 60-70 pounds. My biggest issues? I am not a huge fan of exercise. I am an emotional eater with a stressful job, so I often use food as comfort. That is NOT a good combination!

I am looking forward to getting to know you and to making some new friends.

Hi! I have been battling this weight thing for years! I have finally revamped my life to cooking fresh meats and vegetables, and all this while running a homeschooling academy! Yikes LOL This stresses me sometimes, and I am here to learn how to cope with the stress instead of eating! I know that through Yahushua; I will conquer ALL things!

I am currently trying to learn how to control my allergies naturally, so I will not continue to gain weight because of my medicine! (My goal is to be medicine free) I have stopped and started this journey to being a better keeper of my temple so many times, but this time it is going to be different because my mindset is on the future in Yahushua (Jesus) and not the past! I look forward to growing with this group!

HI!

I'm Val and I've been teaching high school English for two years now! I just started teaching ONLINE school (yay teaching in jammies!) but it can be hard to step away from the computer/work and go work out!

I have struggled with my weight for some time, I was on SparkPeople under a different name for a LONG time, but as of yesterday I decided to completely change that! I deleted my old account and started anew! Thanks for allowing me on here!

Hello!
This is my first post on this team, though I've been logging points on another thread for a while now.

I retired from teaching 8 years ago after a 31-year career in the same school. I've been subbing all of those 8 years but decided not to this year. I do have a very part-time job with my town, doing secretarial work for two municipal boards.

I have struggled with weight issues all of my adult life. I lost 87 pounds 16 years ago with TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and have maintained that loss. I joined SparkPeople a few years ago to get added incentive, motivation, information, and more. It is a very valuable resource, I think, and I wish more would take advantage of it.

Thanks for allowing me on the team. I know the stresses of the job can really get to you. But I am proof you can do the job AND stay with a healthy eating plan.

Stay well!

Carol

Hello, I have been teaching for 20+ years....I retired two years ago and found out I wasn't ready!! I found the "perfect" job for me - part time (3 days a week) at a school 5 minutes from me. I am an RtI specialist. I have been a member of SparkPeople for three years, and I am successful at being healthy because of it. When I neglect my Spark Habits, I tend to get a little "soft"...hee hee. emoticon

HI Everybody. I introduced myself before but it has been awhile. My name is Julie. I work at a preschool - not a public school. I have been in early childhood for over 15 years. I was pretty successful last time I was on spark but I let drama and life situations get me back into my bad habits. I am heavier now than ever before. The Spark team I was most active on before is basically an inactive team at this point. So I am looking for a team to offer some of the support I was getting before.
I was recently married in 2013. I have 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter. I want to show my girls who unfortunately have followed in my weight gain habits that weight loss can be done and in a healthy way.

Greetings!
My name is Judy and I'm from the area just south of the "Finger Lakes" in New York. I have retired after 27 (plus a quarter) years of teaching. That was over 20 years ago! Doesn't seem possible.
I live just a block below the local Elementary/Middle School, so I get to see the youngsters trekking off to their daily doses of education each day, and listen to their cheerful voices as they enjoy recess on the playground.
My teaching now is with adults. I teach round dance, which is similar to square dancing, and goes hand in hand with the Modern Western Square dancing. My husband and I also hold a class for Social Dance, which includes some of the more simple ballroom steps.
I have 2 children, a grandson, and a great grandson. My childrens' marriages also graced my life with another grandson and granddaughter.

Hello,

I'm working toward MAT to teach a foreign language in middle and secondary schools. Not a teacher, yet, but working on it :) I had various surgeries done in the past few years and gained weight while being benched for what feels like forever. Now that I have a semblance of a normal life again, I am working on shaving more pounds off, again. I say again, because it has been a roller coaster so far. Anyway, looking forward to a new career if they'll have me :)

Hello - I'm Bett - 6th grade Earth Science teacher in the suburbs of Atlanta. This is my 12th and final year teaching. I'm 62 and my wonderful husband is 66 and we want to begin the next part of our lives. I've always been active and always losing and gaining weight - 10 off then 15 on. You know the drill. At 60 I completed 2 sprint triathlons. Wow! It was inspiring working with my gal pals to get fit enough to compete. I loved the way I felt and looked. Then life got in the way, death of my mom and a bad car accident that left my right ankle smashed and put back together with pins. Enough of that, gained weight, lots of it = couldn't walk, But now I'm back! And looking forward to this adventure. Actually I found this site when I was searching for seated exercises.
Anyway, I'm retiring in May I want my fitness back. I've done it before, I can do it again.

Hello, I teach Pre-K at a christian preschool. I've taught Kindergarten in the past and also have subbed for elementary grades. I love my job and I love the wonderful people I work with.

I want to lose about 50 pounds and keep it off for good. I exercise 5-6 times a week so I think I really need to focus on making better food choices, watching my portions, and drinking my water. I'm going to try one step at a time and drinking that 64+ oz. a day is the first hurdle. emoticon

Hello, I teach Humanities in a Secondary School in Italy. I have been teaching for almost 15 years now and I enjoy it, even if it can be quite challenging and stressful at times!
My goal is to lose about 10 kilos through exercise and a healthier diet (I am seeing a dietitian to get a tailored plan). I hope to find some support and tips here! :)

Hi.
My name's David. I'm a Bible teacher for High School students here in South Africa.
I love teaching and my students love the classes so we have lots of fun.
I'm looking to to lose about 14 kilos and about 20 cm from around my waist.
I enjoy doing outdoor activities with my students and it is important for me to get into shape.

I am a reading teacher working with K-5 students. I have been teaching for 21 years and love my students. I'm always glad to get structure back into my life when we start school again. I have really fallen apart and have 35 pounds to lose now! This has been building for two years, but the impatient side of me wants it gone RIGHT NOW. So I am working on persevering and being consistent.

Hi! I'm an art teacher currently assigned to two different buildings. In one building I have a classroom of my own and in the other I am "Art on a Cart." At least pushing the cart around gets me my daily cardio! Both my schools are elementary, my youngest grade being Kinders and my oldest being 6th graders. This will be my 15th year teaching. My school year starts next Monday on the 25th. I'm hoping to make it a healthier one then years past!

Hi, my name is Lori and I live in Eureka, Montana. I am a second grade teacher. This will be my 8th year teaching. I have a wonderful husband and two amazing daughters. I have a goal of losing my weight by January. I need to stay motivated especially at night. I do well throughout the day because I take my lunch to work but when I get home and cook I eat that and then some once everyone is in bed or when I get to relax. I plan on working on getting rid of my bad habits. emoticon

emoticon ladies,
It sounds like you are already for a wonderful school year! I hope that you all have one too!
I schedule my workouts in the mornings before getting ready for school. That way I know that I get them done. Plus it sets me up to have a great day with my students. I hope that you all can continue on the road to a healthy lifestyle. Look forward to sharing your successes and failures with you.
Have a great day!
Take care,
Kerry

Hi All! My name is Dawn and I teach Grade Three. I am married and have two daughters, ages 14 and 9. I teach in a small rural school. We start up in a couple of weeks and I'm a bit nervous about scheduling in workouts through a busy week. I am hoping to keep my healthy habits throughout this school year!

A year from now you will wish you had started today.

(my ticker is in pounds, not kg btw ;))
