Hi, I'm a newly retired elementary teacher from Illinois. I got my Early Childhood degree while I was working as a teacher para-pro in a local public school and raising my family. I then taught first grade for 11 years, and then second grade for the rest of my career.
I always say that the best lessons I ever learned about teaching were from BEING a teacher. I really felt unprepared when I got my first classroom. Today my district has a paid stipend for teacher mentors to help new teachers. So glad for that!

My name is Jessi, and I am currently in college to get my BS in early childhood education. I am in my 30's, so I'm a non-traditional college student. I know the important influence teachers make on the children in their community, especially those in their classroom. That is why I am working to be a better role model for them. I want to be an example of a happy, healthy, active lifestyle. However, I can't do that if I'm immobilized by the aches and pains of fibro. Wishing everyone success on this journey.

Hi everyone! My name is Connie and I teach math in a small rural Western PA high school. I have been teaching for 21 years 17 of them where I am currently at. In the past, I have taught basic general math to the 7th graders, low level algebra to 9th graders, and statistics for jr and Sr. This year the admin has switched the whole depart around. I am going to teach algebra 3, calculus, statistics, and SAT prep. So you can imagine what I spent my summer doing!

A little about myself...I am married to a great guy and we just celebrated 19 years last week. We have two great kids. Our oldest daughter just started college at the beginning of the month. She is planning to be a physicians assistant. Our son will be a sophomore in he this year and is starting to question where he would like to go with his life, so the we whole search is on again.

Hectic life but wouldn't have it any other way. I truly believe you should live life to the fullest everyday.

Hello everyone, I'm Jesi. I currently teach kindergarten in Central Florida. This will be my second year. I feel like a lunatic, but I am so ready for summer vacation to be over. I can't wait to get back to work. Aside from being a teacher, I am a wife and mother of 2. There really isn't much to say about myself other than that. I have struggled with my weight since 5th grade and hope that this go round will prove beneficial to my overall health and happiness. If there is anything you want to know, feel free to ask!

Hi- I'm Amber. I am restarting Spark for the umpteenth million time, but I am psyched because IT IS SUMMER BREAK! I have been eating fairly healthy with a spattering of graduation parties here and there (too much yummy food). I am changing my teaching line next year so I plan on spending a lot of time getting ready and liking it!! I am so happy to have time to take care of myself, and develop some routines that will carry on into the school year. Aloha.

Hi! My name is Amy & I am currently teaching 3rd grade in Florida. I love my job, kids, & school, but find that I do not balance my life, primarily my food choices, at all from August to May. I have zero will power when it comes to potluck days and when parents show their gratefulness through baked goods. 🍪🍩🍰 The worst part is that's exactly how I thank MY kids' teachers! Starbucks & sweets! Lol! I timed my SP return to coincide with our Spring Break in the hopes that I can put some strategies into place & finish the year out with focus & inner strength. Looking forward to getting to know everyone & supporting each other!

~Amy~

Hello.
My name is Christine. I am a 4th grade teacher in New York City. I love my job and working with kids. These past two years have been the most challenging for me in terms of my career. I find myself stress eating even though I am generally healthy and active, I regret relying on takeout as a way to destress or treat myself. Today I am finally putting my foot down. Please send advice and motivation. I would like to lose 20 pounds.

Hi! I'm a high school math teacher in SC. This is my 3rd year in, and I'm on my 4th principal and 3rd set of standards. This school has been through quite a lot of change in the last 5 years, and I often feel like I get the full force of that change as the new teacher. I love teaching, and I love my kids, but the stress of this teacher life is gathering on my waist line!

My hope is to change my lifestyle. I want to sleep better, drink more water, and eat healthier. I want to set aside time for myself, as well as get my work done. And I definitely think having a community of people with similar goals who also GET this job will help a lot as I am making these changes :)

Have a great day, y'all!

I've taught middle school for about 18 years. I love my career and the students I work with but find that the very job I love causes me so much stress and I often turn to food as a result. I am starting anew and am glad that I found TLL. I desire to reach my weight-loss goal by the end of the year.

Last year I lost about 35 pounds but have since gained 15 pounds back. I really want to stop the lose-gain-lose cycle.

Hi! My name is Jen and I am a special ed para professional in an elementary school. I LOVE my job! I joined Spark back in 2013 and did very well, losing around 60 lbs! I found that I love to run and have ran in many 5K races... something I never thought was possible for myself!
In 2015 I had three big setbacks where I guess you could say I kind of lost "my spark". The biggest setback was back in May '15, when I fell at the gym and tore my meniscus. I am still going to physical therapy 2x/week, along with multiple dr appts. I have a big brace and am using crutches to get around. At work I use a wheel chair so my hands are available to help students.
After seeing how much weight I had gained over the last year, I've made it a point to come back to Sparkpeople and get back on track! I have started tracking food, but am stuck as to what kinds of exercise I can do to not aggravate the knee. I refuse to let my knee keep me from reaching my goals any longer!

Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control!

Your desire to change must be greater then your desire to stay the same!

Progress is progress, whether it's 1 pound or 100 pounds, it's still something to be very proud of!

Hi, I'm 38 and teach 5th grade Gifted & Talented students. Love my job and kids, they're awesome! I've taught in public/charter/informal settings for going on my 8th year now. I'm at a time in my life when I can focus more on myself and I'm totally taking advantage of it by getting healthy, in body, mind, and spirit! Would love some friends to help along the way, to give & receive encouragement!

HI!! I am a 34 year old HS math teacher in an inner city school. I was on spark before and did fabulous, but, somehow, life got in the way and I gained back 20 of the 40 lbs I lost. I am working on getting that back off, for good!!! I have tried other "fad" diets with friends in the past year, but finally decided to come back to spark, because this was where I was most successful!

Hi everyone! I'm a 55 year old prek teacher in northern NM. I moved to NM from Florida the week before school started. After losing 50lbs, I "found" 25 of them during the move and transition (I was 10lbs away from my goal weight). I had been out of the gym for 18mths. due to adrenal fatigue and a stress fracture, but just got a new membership this week. I still don't really have any friends here yet, so I'm hoping to find some support through SP. I have 35lbs to lose and am finally motivated to get going on this journey again. I'm excited to be a part of the NM team.

Hello! I'm Angela, and I'm an academic advisor/ instructor at Appalachian State University in the mountains of North Carolina. I have a masters and doctorate in education administration and focused my dissertation on academic advising of first generation college students. I mainly teach classes on social justice and education, but I'm combining Harry Potter and social justice for the first time in spring - should be fun as my students will be interested in the Harry Potter side of things if nothing else. My primary job is to coordinate student services (advising, orientation and student issues) for 5 advisors and 700 students. Teaching is just a great and fun bonus, but I love it and plan to move into the professorial world at some point in my far future.

I've recently gained nearly 20 pounds in less than 2 months, and I was certainly no lightweight to begin with!, following somehow contracting MRSA. I was on antibiotics and other meds for nearly 2 months to deal with the MRSA, and this led to complication after complication. I'm working with my doctors to try to lose the weight now and am using phentermine as a boost, but I'm pretty depressed that I now only have 3 pairs of pants that actually fit me.

I'm trying to eat lower carb/ lower glycemic index, but it's hard because I'm fairly convinced that all my teeth are sweet teeth. If anyone has suggestions or recipes, I'm happy to share! I love to cook and have a bunch of recipes under my name in Spark Recipes.

I look forward to "meeting" all of you!

Best,
Angela

Hi there!
I am an elementary teacher. I have taught Stateside the past few years, and am getting ready to teach abroad next month.
I certainly enjoy teaching, but it is hard finding balance between the demands of new teachers and personal health. What do you all do to make sure you get your important needs met too?

Hello all! I am a middle school teacher in central VA. I've put on some noticeable pounds in the last couple of years- largely because of at-school snacks and a beer or two at night to wind down! I'm looking to lose about 20 pounds at this point- already lost 12.

Hello everyone. I am Christa and I teach 3rd grade in Washington. We will be going back to school in September so it's a crazy mad scramble to get everything ready right now. I find that I can stick to my plan when I am at school so I'm really looking forward to that. I tend to graze when I am at home. I am married to a wonderful man who puts up with my teacher hoarding. We have a fantastic son who is going into 6th grade this year. And our lives wouldn't be complete with our menagerie of "broken" animals. Bella is a senior doggie with one eye, two bad knees, and a neurological disorder that causes her to have seizures. Cindy is our little pup (4 years old) who was found in a trailer park. Only skin and bones. She is now loving referred to as our piggy. We have two cats who also require extra attention. T.O.C. is a senior black cat who gives hugs and is hairless on the back half of her body. Peeves is a fat lap cat... we haven't figured out her unique ability yet.

Do not underestimate the power of small changes executed consistently. They are amazingly powerful and do produce results. Not overnight, mind you, but the results will come and you are worth the effort.

The tortoise is on my ticker to remind me that slow and steady wins the race. I took things on little by little. To try and attempt everything at once would have been a recipe for disaster for me.

May success be yours!

Hi everyone! I'm Erin and I'm a high school science teacher. I started SP again after a LONG break (like years) last week. One week down! This is my last week of summer, so I'm hoping to be able to keep up with exercising once school starts back up.

Hello everyone,
Coming back to SP after being away for quite some time. Heading back to work tomorrow, so I'm hoping I can get my healthy eating back on track. My goal is to eat at least 2 fruits and veggies for the day and have a healthy breakfast!! Starting small. emoticon

Hello all!

My name is Kat and I am a high school English teacher in Florida. I did not have trouble with my weight until my first child was born. It took me three years, but I was able to lose the baby weight, with the help of Spark People. However, a few years later, I had another baby (who is now 7 years old) and gained a fair amount. The problem is that I gained even more AFTER giving birth, to the tune of 100 pounds gained overall. I lost 30 pounds a few years ago using Spark and WW, but then I started teaching. I have gained back nearly all of the lost weight, putting on a few pounds during the school year, and a few more over the summer. As a teacher, my time is short, so long bouts of exercise are nearly impossible. I am also a foodie and a home cook, so dieting is my personal nightmare. I am trying to make changes in my portions, trying healthier options on occasion, and increasing my activity to make a difference. I have used Spark on and off but need some motivation to keep coming back and stay on track. Looking forward to making another new start and using the team to stay motivated!

Hi! I'm Amanda from California. I currently am in my 11th year of teaching 1st grade. I also taught special ed for 1 year and 4th grade for 5 years.

I used Sparkpeople to lose my baby weight 9 years ago. I'm back because I just can't shake the last 15 pounds of the 30 I gained during an illness and after my grandmother died 2 years ago.

I'm happy to be in this group!

emoticon Hello, SparkTeachers! My name is Lorna. I'm glad to find this team of kindred spirits. Although I joined SP in late June, I haven't had the "luxury of time" to explore SparkTeams and the zillion other pages on SP. I've been helping my husband run two summer schools - two more weeks to go! New health and fitness goals have actually imposed a good balance with my busy days at school.

I am a retired, recycled, and rehired (part-time) Texas teacher. My passion is small-group intervention work with children in grades 2-5. I believe in the whole theme of "The Spark": never lose that enthusiasm for learning, personal improvement, collaborating, and mentoring kids. I look forward to sharing and many meaningful discussions with you!

emoticon 3SUSIE to the team! I suspect most teachers, especially early childhood, have to keep things in order to survive the chaos of a roomful of little ones. I taught Kindergarten for years and loved it; however, everything had to be organized so I could teach effectively. Your health should be a high priority! How can you help the little ones if you are not healthy? You made a good choice in evaluating the situation and applying a solution.

Hi I am 3Susie. Three is my favorite number and that is why it is at the beginning of my name.
I have been teaching forever. Presently I teach first grade, however I have also taught kindergarten. I am a work-alcoholic. Everything in my house and classroom must be perfect AND because of this attitude my health has suffered. Right now I am in the process of learning to LET-IT-GO and make my health a priority. It is exciting to see other teachers on this journey as well. emoticon I am looking forward to interacting more with the team.

Hi everyone! I just heard about this board from another teacher friend. I teach at university and have a son with severe, life threatening allergies, who is going into first grade. Needless to say I am nervous about the school year starting back up. We've been so lucky this summer to get in a good exercise schedule and good eating habits. I'm trying to plan, schedule and pre-stock the freezer to be ready.

My name is Tanya and I live in Georgia. I work in a Title 1 school that is currently around 90 % free and reduced lunch. I used to be the remedial math teacher. As of last year I became the Instructional Coach. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the position last year but the additional stress kept the pounds on. I hope to focus more on healthy eating for the 2015 - 2016 school year.

Kelly- Welcome to the group! I was sad when I read that one of your students passed away. I lost one of mine several years ago and it was an emotional time. She did have multiple disabilities but her death was completely unexpected. I don't think that people who are not teachers understand how much these children become "ours". Good luck to you on your journey towards health!

Hi, everyone! My name is Kelly, and I've been a member of this group for a while but have never been active. I teach junior high school ELA, and I had a rough year and did quite a bit of emotional eating after one of my students passed away. It was one of the most crushing things I have ever dealt with my entire life, and certainly in my career. Now, though, I'm feeling it's time to do right by myself and get back on track. This seems like a great group and I'm excited to start my journey with you! emoticon

Hi!
I'm Heather. I live in WA and teach elementary music in a school that is very multi-cultural. We have about 50 % free/reduced lunch, and 57 different languages are represented at our school. I have been teaching for about 3 years and I absolutely love it. It is what I was always meant to do, though I didn't start until I was 40.

Hi. I'm Jessica. I'm new to the group. I'm a 1st grade teacher in WA state. I am trying to learn to be healthy and balanced. I find it so hard to eat healthy and workout as a teacher. I end up just snacking all day long because I can't sit and eat. I get home and I am starving and have papers to grade. I end up eating, watching TV and grading. I should be working out. Any tips any of you have would be amazing.

Hi! I work as a preschool teacher and teach 3 and 4 year old students. I just got engaged in Feb and want to look and feel my best for my upcoming wedding. My class is so sweet and encourages me to get my steps in each day. My girls all gave me hugs on Friday when I told them I had beat my walking goal by 1000 steps. emoticon

My goal right now is to lose 20 pounds by the time school starts back up. It didn't feel like a huge goal when I set it on the last day of school, but now with two months left, I'm feeling a little less sure of myself . . .

Glad to find a group of people that understand how tough it can be while trying to teach!

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Shannon here. I'm rejoining under a new SP name as I recommit to getting healthy again after a rough couple of years. I teach English and have taught middle school for most of my 13 years in education. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and finding some accountability partners on this journey! :)

Hi, I taught special need students for 27 years. Am now retired, I have a bad leg and unable to do much walking which has helped with my weight gain. I am trying to get more exercise with the seated videos on this site. They have really helped. I am also trying to cut portions. I enjoy this website and it is very motivating for me. So far since joining I have walked 2000 steps a day which for me is a huge amount and I have lost 22 pounds.

Good morning everyone! My name is Jes and I just joined SparkPeople yesterday! I am having a blast exploring all of the tools that they make available, it is probably just the mathematics teacher in me that loves all the reports and things. emoticon

Hello everyone. I am new here and am hoping to get healthy and fit.
My name is Christina and I have been a music teacher for over 25 years. The past 19, in the public schools.

I love my job, and my students, now it's time to learn to love me.

Hi all, I'm Julie a second year teacher at a rural school. I currently teach 4th grade but will be teaching 3rd grade next year. I've been on Spark for a while now but only started seriously losing weight last year. I've lost 50 pounds so far and I'm really buckling down to lose the last twenty. I'm looking forward to being more active in the community here!
