Greetings!
My name is Judy and I'm from the area just south of the "Finger Lakes" in New York. I have retired after 27 (plus a quarter) years of teaching. That was over 20 years ago! Doesn't seem possible.
I live just a block below the local Elementary/Middle School, so I get to see the youngsters trekking off to their daily doses of education each day, and listen to their cheerful voices as they enjoy recess on the playground.
My teaching now is with adults. I teach round dance, which is similar to square dancing, and goes hand in hand with the Modern Western Square dancing. My husband and I also hold a class for Social Dance, which includes some of the more simple ballroom steps.
I have 2 children, a grandson, and a great grandson. My childrens' marriages also graced my life with another grandson and granddaughter.

Hello,

I'm working toward MAT to teach a foreign language in middle and secondary schools. Not a teacher, yet, but working on it :) I had various surgeries done in the past few years and gained weight while being benched for what feels like forever. Now that I have a semblance of a normal life again, I am working on shaving more pounds off, again. I say again, because it has been a roller coaster so far. Anyway, looking forward to a new career if they'll have me :)

Hello - I'm Bett - 6th grade Earth Science teacher in the suburbs of Atlanta. This is my 12th and final year teaching. I'm 62 and my wonderful husband is 66 and we want to begin the next part of our lives. I've always been active and always losing and gaining weight - 10 off then 15 on. You know the drill. At 60 I completed 2 sprint triathlons. Wow! It was inspiring working with my gal pals to get fit enough to compete. I loved the way I felt and looked. Then life got in the way, death of my mom and a bad car accident that left my right ankle smashed and put back together with pins. Enough of that, gained weight, lots of it = couldn't walk, But now I'm back! And looking forward to this adventure. Actually I found this site when I was searching for seated exercises.
Anyway, I'm retiring in May I want my fitness back. I've done it before, I can do it again.

Hello, I teach Pre-K at a christian preschool. I've taught Kindergarten in the past and also have subbed for elementary grades. I love my job and I love the wonderful people I work with.

I want to lose about 50 pounds and keep it off for good. I exercise 5-6 times a week so I think I really need to focus on making better food choices, watching my portions, and drinking my water. I'm going to try one step at a time and drinking that 64+ oz. a day is the first hurdle. emoticon

Hello, I teach Humanities in a Secondary School in Italy. I have been teaching for almost 15 years now and I enjoy it, even if it can be quite challenging and stressful at times!
My goal is to lose about 10 kilos through exercise and a healthier diet (I am seeing a dietitian to get a tailored plan). I hope to find some support and tips here! :)

I am a reading teacher working with K-5 students. I have been teaching for 21 years and love my students. I'm always glad to get structure back into my life when we start school again. I have really fallen apart and have 35 pounds to lose now! This has been building for two years, but the impatient side of me wants it gone RIGHT NOW. So I am working on persevering and being consistent.

Hi! I'm an art teacher currently assigned to two different buildings. In one building I have a classroom of my own and in the other I am "Art on a Cart." At least pushing the cart around gets me my daily cardio! Both my schools are elementary, my youngest grade being Kinders and my oldest being 6th graders. This will be my 15th year teaching. My school year starts next Monday on the 25th. I'm hoping to make it a healthier one then years past!

Hi, my name is Lori and I live in Eureka, Montana. I am a second grade teacher. This will be my 8th year teaching. I have a wonderful husband and two amazing daughters. I have a goal of losing my weight by January. I need to stay motivated especially at night. I do well throughout the day because I take my lunch to work but when I get home and cook I eat that and then some once everyone is in bed or when I get to relax. I plan on working on getting rid of my bad habits. emoticon

emoticon ladies,
It sounds like you are already for a wonderful school year! I hope that you all have one too!
I schedule my workouts in the mornings before getting ready for school. That way I know that I get them done. Plus it sets me up to have a great day with my students. I hope that you all can continue on the road to a healthy lifestyle. Look forward to sharing your successes and failures with you.
Have a great day!
Take care,
Kerry

Hi All! My name is Dawn and I teach Grade Three. I am married and have two daughters, ages 14 and 9. I teach in a small rural school. We start up in a couple of weeks and I'm a bit nervous about scheduling in workouts through a busy week. I am hoping to keep my healthy habits throughout this school year!

A year from now you will wish you had started today.

Hello! My name is Amanda, and I am a 7th grade reading teacher in Arlington, Tx. This will be my second year of teaching (yay!) and I look forward to taking everything I learned last year (good and bad) and starting over for the better this year. That includes being healthy. I gained quite a lot of weight during my first year teaching because of the convenience of fast food, stress, a bad relationship, and living in an area I didn't like that was also far from work. Now that I am out of that relationship, living in my first house really close to work, and have a game plan for the school year, I am ready to start the school year refreshed and determined to make the year a good one with healthy habits.

Hi, my name is Cynthia. I teach writing at Stony Brook University, mostly undergraduate courses and some graduate. I'd really like to lose five pounds before school begins again in late August and keep going from there! (Although it's certainly not a major motivation, I'm pretty sure that I got somewhat better evaluations when I wasn't overweight! I'd be interested in what people think about that. To be fair, I also think I had more energy and that certainty might affect my teaching.) Feeling better (after 50) is a major reason I need to make this weight loss stick. Good luck to all of you and see you in the forum.

My name is Heather. I teach high school English in Fort Worth, TX. I am starting a new school and a new district this year, and I am very excited about this. One of the big pluses of this move is that my new school is three miles from home, which will allow me to be home at a decent hour and work out! Hooray!

I am looking forward to getting to know you all and to reaching my goals. Let's do this!

Thanks! I really love vegetables, but during the school year I usually reach for something 'easier.' I've started ignoring the voice in my head that cries about the unnecessary expense and buying pre-cut convenience veggies, so hopefully that will help? I've never been as much into fruit. I like pineapple now and then, and apple sauce, but I'm not much into sweet things. It's all butter and salt for me!

Hello Everyone!

I am a fifth grade teacher in Chapel Hill, NC. I've put on a dress size for every year I've spent teaching (three so far), and was startled to learn at my last check up that I've continued to gain over summer break. I joined spark people because I can't afford yet another professional wardrobe! I'm your typical fitness-averse bookworm, and I love to cook, so I am hoping the site will help me find ways to shift my habits in a more healthy direction.

Hi everyone! I teach in British Columbia in Canada. I teach Grade 2, French Immersion. I never had a weight problem until I began teaching. In my first year of teaching, I gained 100lbs, and I have been yo-yo-ing and struggling ever since. I hope to find tips here on how to deal with the stress of the job, because it is the driver behind my weight gain and struggles to lose it.

Hello! I'm a former 6th grade science teacher from Phoenix. I just got a coaching position at a new school in my district, and am currently working on my Masters in Administration. I should be done in March 2015.

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for nearly a year, and the one thing that seems to be holding us up is our weight. That is the first recommendation from our doctors, so we are starting (again) on this long road to weight loss and eventually a baby or two or three.

Hello and thank you for the very warm welcome. I used to teach preschool students with disabilities and now work as a Learning Consultant (Educational Diagnostician). I have joined Spark People before but never stuck with it. I have been back on it for three weeks now and so far, so good. Oddly enough although I belonged to several teams, I never posted to the boards - guess I was too shy. This time, I have decided that I need to use all the tools if I want to change my life style. Thank you again for the warm welcome.

HappyToB,

I used to be the only instructor teching a three semester course sequence. It was wonderful having the privilege to work with students for that period of time. Our program is growing and with growth, I no longer have that opportunity. This past year was very different because of that change. It was more difficult to make the connections. I no longer have the luxury of time to get to know them.

Hello! My name is Lynnzee. I am a kindergarten ELA/SS teacher in a Charter School in GA. I just recently changed my path, earned my Masters Degree in Education and spent the last year and a half teaching some amazing kids. My school does a 2 year loop. So this year I get a whole new group of students that I get to grow with for 2 years. I am hoping to not only be able to set a good example for them, but also the 6 year, 2 year and 6 month old that I have at home.

Hi there! I'm Erin. I'm a music teacher from Pittsburgh, PA. I took a very demanding job midway through last year, and I have struggled with weight gain ever since then. The job can be isolating, and my contractual obligations have often left me sleepless and stressed. I'm happy to have the summer to reboot, and I'm hoping to develop some healthy habits that will follow me into the next academic year. Cheers, and good luck to everyone else here, too!

Welcome Michele! My youngest graduated last fall and moved out in Nov. Now we just have dogs!
Start by changing one habit and when you have that down, add another. It's hard to change everything all at once. Just know you will make mistakes along the way and that's ok. Learn from it and move on, but don't give up!

Good morning! My name is Michele and I'm a high school Spanish teacher. I just finished my 26th year in the classroom and am ready to focus on ME this summer! My youngest just graduated from high school and I find myself an empty-nester now, at the start of the summer, rather than in August when he goes off to college. With everyday open for whatever I want, I want to revamp my lifestyle. I weigh the most I have ever weighed and am NOT happy with what I see in the mirror. I am looking forward to getting to know you and finding tips that will help me continue what I start this summer once school resumes in mid-August!

Welcome Meagan! The first year is especially tough but the meal prep will help a lot. It looks like you're off to a good start!

Hi! My name is Meagan. I'm a 3rd grade teacher in Florida. This was my first year teaching and I love it.
I decided to change my lifestyle in like December/January, I did it slowly so I'm not even sure of when I truly started. I've been meal prepping to help make it easier. I've just been losing steam and motivation and thought having people in the same boat to talk to will help!

I am a 30 year old mother of two who just graduated college. Between finishing student teaching for my Bachelor's degree and taking care of two children (one of whom is on the autism spectrum) I have really let myself go this year. I am so disappointed in how I look compared to even last August! I want to make some positive changes so that I can feel good about myself and be a better wife, mother, and teacher!

emoticon Jessi! My advice is not to try and change every habit all at once. Pick one and work on that for a week or two, then add another. Remember too, you will make mistakes, it's part of the process. Don't beat yourself up if everything isn't perfect. emoticon

Hi my name is Cathy and I live in Oregon and I am 48 years old.

I am an early childhood educator and I teach toddlers, ages one to two. I have been a teacher for twenty six years. I am currently in school to get my associates in human/child services. I am at a point where I need to get this unhealthy weight off my body as it is effecting my health. So I am here to educate myself on what will work for me and get the support from the wonderful people here.

I am a Florida teacher currently working at an IB MYP (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) public school. I teach Design and Advanced Reading simultaneously but that will change next year. I have been a member of Sparkpeople for many years but always seem to get too busy keep up with it and let it slide. Then I find myself coming back with more problems each time I ignore my health. I am hoping that if I start as our year comes to a close, that I can develop the habit and keep it going through next school year.

I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once.
I have succeeded in proving that those 700 ways will not work.
When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.

Welcome! I switched schools this year and we only have treats on Fridays. My old school had food in the lounge daily! Sometimes I just stay away on Friday. Good luck!

Hi! My name is Terri and I teach Technology to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in NE Ohio, which means I currently have about 400 students. I absolutely love what I do, and the kids are amazing. Prior to teaching here, I worked as a children's librarian in a public library, and taught preschool for about 6 years. I am not new to SP, and have been around on-again / off-again since 2008. Here I am, yet again, trying to lose the weight I've put on over the years. I am very driven right now and have been rewarded by seeing the scale cooperate. I find losing weight easier in the school setting (rather than the library or preschool) since there are not snacks constantly sitting around for me to munch on... or at least I don't have the time to go hunt them down. However, I am learning to dread going into the office on Donut Friday.

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.

My name is Ava and I am a middle school science teacher. This is my first year teaching 7th and 8th graders. Before I've taught 5th grade science for 11 years. I am looking for a support group to help me maintain my focus to lose 40 pounds. I would like to look and feel better, so losing the weight will allow me to accomplish my goals.

Greetings and salutations of the (for us in the Midwest) very late spring --

My name's Chris and I'm a post-secondary English instructor. I've worked for St. Cloud State (in MN - big men's hockey school), the U of Phoenix Online; the U of N. Dakota (also heavily into men's hockey); and N. Dakota State (who did great in the NCAA men's B-ball tourney this year!) I'm on hiatus from doctoral work, living with my widowed dad who is my diet -- no, make that "lifestyle change" :-) -- buddy. So far, he's lost 20 and I've lost 15. Been stuck for a couple of weeks, so I decided to re-up my SP membership and kick exercise in the hinder and try to get off the fence. At the moment, I'm at an even 200 -- much, much too much for someone who is only 5'2". Love to read (dangerously sedentary!); just took up chair yoga this week, along with Sr. Citizen-speed Zumba -- a slowish start to warm me up to the workout.

Welcome! The first year is especially hard. Use those nights off and maybe weekends to get some workouts in. Good luck!

Hi fellow teachers!

I'm a first year third grade teacher in Idaho. I LOVE what I do. I have a fantastic class, with super supportive parents. I know I'm lucky!

As with most teachers out there, I find it difficult to find the time for consistent exercise and healthy cooking. Like many of you, I work a second job to make ends meet. Between the two, I put in about 80 hours a week. The good news is that I just cut my hours at the library, so I now have two week nights that I will be putting to good use in my quest to be healthy and fit.

I'm excited to get started here!
