I don't really mind most nicknames, but Poppy is one of those that could be ill construed and misunderstood.

I know, and hopefully you do too, that poppy extract can be made in to a couple of different drugs that are substances that are proscribed. I just hope no one sees the name and think that I am involved in growing or transporting illegal drugs.

With anything we put out in cyber space and with the NSA monitoring everything, if they come knocking on my door, Ill have to say, "It was all SAMMIESMOM13 fault". Hey, it seems to work for Obama. I'll just tell any investigators, "It was Obama's fault", and I should get a free pass.

Somehow, I missed a rather large number of notifications from Spark and the one for this thread was included in it.

I have been going back and reading everything from September 1st to September 28th when I realized either no one was responding to anything I posted (possible, but not likely), or there was something wrong with the notification procedure.

Since I have been a Spark Member before we changed to this format, this was something I had experienced before and was able to fix it.

Mostly, the problem was no big deal, except for this thread and your last post. I'm late, but tell your grandson that this old, 100% Service Connected Disabled and Honorably Discharged Veteran Captain salutes HIM.

I have a special place reserved in my heart for young men like him, and the young woman who also serve our country, for volunteering to take up the baton we old f@rts can no longer carry (I can still PICK a pack up and situate it on my back, but if I had to hobble more than 100 feet, I would be in no condition to do anything but collapse and gasp, trying to take enough oxygen in to keep from passing out).

I learned, quite some time ago that my heart, though severely damaged, had an unlimited capacity for these young heroes.

As an FYI, my son did the same as yours. He enlisted in the ARNG and did the summer training between his Junior and Senior years in high school. He had just been promoted to Buck Sargent (E-5) when his Heavy Equipment Repair Battalion was activated and sent to Ft. Sill. At Ft. Sill there was a shuffling of personnel, and as excess in position, he was transferred to be the Personnel Sargent in a National Guard Artillery Battalion. That National Guard Artillery Battalion was the ONLY National Guard Combat unit to actually go to Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

His Mom, his younger brother and Dad were ecstatic when he finally got back stateside.

I'm back. Grandson is now a proud Army graduate and back at school for his final year of high school. You BET I'm one proud grandma. :) He's a conservative, and a strong soldier, and a faithful believer in our Lord as well. A real gun and Bible "clinger". Hahaha! I found out he had finished and was restarting reading the Bible, so for his graduation I gave him his great grandma's study Bible with all her notes. He was one very touched soldier. I'll try and post some photos of him as soon as I can find time to download them. Too bad he and your GD can't meet. They might hit it off. Altho he doesn't have a pickup. LOL :)

OK, I have to admit, what the heck is an AKA? My Sammie is my little black dog in the photo. He literally saved my life at a really bad time in my life. He's gone now and I miss him immensely.

Well, I must be tired. I'm being much too nice. emoticon

SAMMIESMOM13 - Very good response. I know you will fit well in this team.

I wish you strong willpower in the next two crazy weeks. Never lose track and forget you are one of the few, the proud, the Sarcastics. Knowing you are fully armed, I look forward to your return.

BTW, you sound much too intelligent to be my ex-DIL, who is also a SammiesMom. One of my AKA's is SammiesGrandpa, but my Sammie is 16, lives in Texas, is a three year Varsity Softball player (she's a Junior [and no, her Mom is not named Sammie]). She's a unique YL, she doesn't like boys who don't shoot, hunt, fish or don't drive pick-ups. At 16, she's already a Conservative. One more brag - she's also more than half way through her freshman year in college.

I can hear her now, "Gra-a-andpa.a.a.a"!

Lordy, Lordy, I HATE to admit it, but I'm liking you very much Poppy Bob (I WILL continue to call you that, I rather like it. emoticon Especially since I now know you would be willing to give me a right AND left hook.) BTW, I AM a lady, I do not swear, drink, smoke, nor hit men! emoticon AND I am the proud daughter and grandmother of warriors too. :) My grandson is a brand new one at 17. emoticon I am "bursting my buttons" proud of him. He's my "hero in combat boots."

Find that dog gone badge, I'll wear it proudly!
Gotta run. Next couple of weeks are gonna be crazy. So you'll most likely see very little of me which I know will be VERY difficult for you all, but being as tough as you all are I have no worries you'll make it without me. LOL.

SammiesMom13,

Well met. You will fair well on this team, just remember to use your reading glasses. Poppy Bob?

Well, I see we must first have a conversation to find what the proper meaning of bald is. At least we don't have to determine what the meaning of "is" is, do we? Bald can be described two ways. The first is no hair on the top or sides of the head at all (which has nothing to do with getting a sunburn on your head on an atoll). The most common example that is given is that of Mr. Clean - which eliminates all dirt whenever he is mentioned (I only have a problem with his self formerly wearing an ear ring and back in the 20th Century, C. E., his having the attributes of a Jeanie. No that was a Genie Maybe that's why I can only remember one ring).

The second definition of "bald" is primarily in reference to "male pattern baldness" (there is a type of female baldness that is called alopecia, but being the Southern Gentlemen [ny place of birth and Act of Congress] that I am, I have not, nor will I ever bring a loss of hair to that ladies attention).

Male pattern baldness is caused by an excess of testosterone and generally has the appearance of a larger forehead with the hairline receded back as far as a third on the back of a mans head. This leaves a "wreath of hair" (sort of like the Caesar's look with the olive wreath). The color is a function of the season, and age. I was born with light brown hair, and beginning the first summer after I was born, that hair became sun bleached on the outer layers. As I have aged, I still have some brown hair that is bleached blonde by the sun, but some of the brown hair has turned gray. The gray is not subject to the bleaching powers of the outdoors. Ipso facto, brown, gray and blond.

Now, you have been educated to things that you have not previously known.

Your welcome.

Furthermore, no, no, no, and no. Item one we can pass because by the time you finish reading this, you will have become educated and know of that which I speak. Item 2 is that I am a member in good standing of the Greater Kansas City Mensa chapter. Though barely a genius myself, my brother joined the Marine Corps as an officer and the average IQ of Marine Corps officers rose four points, and if needs must, I only have to call and he will act as my second. Point three: Were I poorly fed, I would not have reason to belong as a member of this site and nearly a million members would be the poorer for it. Point four of four. Dear Lady, and I use that term loosely (Dear, that is. For you must be dear to someone, but if I were to assume you were dear to me, my lovely bride might have words for me that are not as tender as those to which I am accustomed), I bathe as needed and swim on any day when the temperature reaches 82 degrees (in the summer in Missouri, we often can tell that Fall is around the corner when the temperature drops below 80 for more than four days running).

Madam SammiesMom13, I am a warrior, the son of a warrior, the grandson of a warrior with warriors in my paternal line going back to when the British found the Scots to be a wee puckish about their murder of our Queen, Mary. I am also the father of warriors.

I shall use the same instruction I used when training my boys whilst in Vietnam. "Men, you came to Vietnam and you already have one HUGE cultural weakness against you. That which we call normal is treated as a weakness by our enemies, a weakness to be exploited as often as they can. Do you have an idea what that weakness is? You have been trained from birth to treat women gently and respectfully. If you do that while you are in this country, you will look like this (show Graphic Overlay 1 - Bombed out Vietnamese cafe with parts of six American soldiers spread out). And what do you think caused it? (Show overlay 2 - A smiling, pretty, young Vietnamese woman riding toward the cafe on a bicycle with a package in the basket on the front of her bike). Do you want to see what she looked like afterwards? (Show graphic overlay 3 - Picture of crater, warped rear tire about 30' away and bits of clothing, chunks of meat and lots of blood). You have to lose that ideal over here or you will get dead, dead, dead. And the really shi.ttie thing about all of this you'll probably take out the guys on both sides of you and those to the front and rear of you. How do you overcome this? You play a game to keep your head on. Anytime you see Vietnamese woman when you are out in the boonies, you alert at least two other soldiers you have a possible bomb in sight".

"And everything I just told you goes double for kids. If they can walk, they can be a bomb. Now where do you think a three-year old child could hide a bomb? That's right. In it's diaper. It may just have a shiite filled diaper, but if it explodes, you're not going to care one bit!"

I gave that same briefing, without the overhead projector or slides, to my oldest son when he departed for the first go around in Iraq. He spread the news to his buddies (they were not given an incoming in country briefing by Intel or Ghosts) and they prevented a young, pretty Iraqi woman, whose face covering kept falling away so they could see her big, brown, innocent looking eyes, from blowing up a military checkpoint. Because most of those IED's are command detonated, you keep the bomb outside of effective range and look for the trigger man. In Iraq it was usually some male with a cell phone he wasn't talking on.

On occasion, the trigger man was demobilized and the bomb carriers life was saved. Then Our guys found out they were using the daughters or sisters or wives or girlfriends of dead insurgents as the carriers, and the "Don't come any closer" space was doubled.

Of course I'd hit a woman. If someone thinks I will let them slide just because they are female, they should think twice or three times. Even as a youngster, no female ever got a free slap at me. There is just something about being slapped that is so humiliating that the mere attempt triggers my temper and anger.

But, Sammiesmom13, you are safe from me. Our conversations are done remotely without the single possible chance of you trying to sneak up behind me and slap the back of my head. And if you were shocked by a left hook, a right cross would come as a stunning surprise.

Bully? Oh, right. That was the Republican Roosevelt - Teddy. Not the socialist one who cheated on his wife.

Fantastic. I love it. "But I'm not stupid!" is the punch line to a very old joke I know. Wow! That means you are old enough to remember it, too.

Yeah, right. Dumb. Not! You are a slippery Sarcastic. You, intelligent lady, have successfully passed the rigorous initiation to be allowed on this team! From this day forward, you are authorized to wear the Sarcastic's Badge, First Class.

Debbie, do you remember where I put that bag with those badges in it? What do you mean, it wasn't your turn to keep track of me? Well then, whose turn was it?

Well, Hi there Poppy Bob. Never met a guy with a flower name. I remember a welcome from you and alot of big words about being an old male dog or something who likes soup? Being a boy dog you felt you had to fight with me - me being a newbie. But then I got lost in all the words. I just couldn't remember more than a couple of sentences at a time, being a bit senile. I also got a bit confused - being blonde - as I do remember one part where you mentioned that you were apparently bald, but now were also gray and blonde and bits of brown? I know I'm very blonde, but really I don't understand how you could be bald and blonde and gray and brown all at the same time. Are you trying to say you have no hair, are stupid, poorly fed and dirty? And that you hit women? ( I remember being somewhat shocked by a left hook!)
Beyond that I'm lost and confused and just have to give up because you weren't very gentle. I do remember liking you for some reason... oh, yes, I know you like Ronald Reagan and had a good quote from him. So I sort of felt a warm, fuzzy for you even if you are a big, dirty, stupid, poorly fed bully!
Thanks for the welcome. emoticon You almost made me feel loved and wanted! emoticon

Oh, yeah, I do also remember you tried to get me to give away my age in a very underhanded way. If you had asked nicely I would have told you, but I never tell a devious questioner. I may be blonde, but I'm NOT STUPID, just dumb. emoticon

Dear Sammiesmom13,

Welcome.

Now, that's over I can get going here. You wrote, "BTW, I am a blonde grandma, so old, senile, whatever, all my bases are covered. Just remember that and please be gentle." I'm really not sure if that was a simple (you know, blonde) statement, or a challenge. Being the Superior Sarcastic Senior Alpha male that I am, I must react to this as if it WERE a challenge, just to keep the Team on the safe side.

I took it as a little bit passive/aggressive shot to see if any of us would respond. There are truly some very smart people on this team, but there is only One "Popeye the Turtle". (Point - 1, Popeye)

In answer to blonde, my reply is a left hook with a rejoinder of, "Bald, usta be blonde, but currently gray, blonde and with hints of brown". To "grandma" my reply is "grandpa". (Points - 2, Popeye, 1 ,Sammiesmom13 [grandma and grandpa was a draw].

"So old, senile, whatever, all my bases are covered" is obviously a four pronged attack, but I believe it is actually five pronged! "So old" is a camouflaged two prong attack. The obvious is the "so old", but hidden underneath was the not so obvious,"So. Old". Points - 2, Popeye - 2, Sammiesmom13. You got two points for the tricky bit of camouflage and I received two points for catching both possibilities.
"Senile". Now that was tricky. I might have let you slide on that, but then you put me right back on guard with your answer. If you were really "senile", you wouldn't even have remembered the conversation. Point - Popeye.

"Whatever", is truly devious. I can be on guard for it, but because I will be forced to be reactive, you will probably cause me a bit of anxiety.
Points - 2, Sammiesmom13 - 1, Popeye. You received 2 points, one for setting up the ambush and one for camouflaging it so well. My point was earned by noticing it at the last moment, before you could actually spring it shut.

That "all my bases are covered" was my first hint that you weren't senile. If you were senile, you couldn't think in the abstract, ipso facto, the reverse must be true. Points - 2, Popeye - 1, Sammiesmom13. You got one point for setting it up, I got 1 point for being on the lookout and 1 point for the defensive move made prior to you ..... prior...... What was that thing we were talking about? Senile! Right, we were discussing senility. What was our answer?

SIDE NOTE: I'm a Fan of baseball. Between Little League, high school, college and the Pro's, I see, or listen to, 399+ games a year. Then if you add girls Fast-pitch softball, that adds another 20+ games a year. Last year, my DW and I traveled to Austin, TX to watch my granddaughter and her high school teammates play in the Texas 4A High School Championships.

Back to the present.

"Please be gentle". That was really good. Points - 1, Sammiesmom13 - Popeye 0!

If it really was a subtle attempt to challenge if we were smart enough to read your true meaning and anticipate your ability to maneuver us, as Grandma's are known to do, I must congratulate you. You slid by some of us, but Popeye saw how cleverly your introduction was worded and Immediately took measures to shield the team.

Total Points - Sammiesmom13 = 6, Popeye the Turtle = 8.

Truly an outstanding first post.

I thought you were just joshing us when you just stumbled onto the team, but no-o-o. Since it took you more than 3 1/2 years, I think you must have at least been at the edge of the desert where Moses got lost.

Again, welcome to our team!

BTW, were you born in the 19th Century or the 20th? If it was the 20th, which half? Just curious. I'm not called a geezer without a reason.

PopeyetheTurtle
AKA Popeye
AKA Pops
AKA Bob
AKA .....nope. I'm not going to share Any of Those with this team looking over your shoulder. Most of them would tarry nary a second to take advantage of what they perceived to be a weakness!

We stumble around until we bump into it. emoticon Or it could be the blond taking over, you know, we're kind of dumb and feel sorry for nasty, unhappy, sarcastic folks so we like to bless them with our presence. :) Or should that be "presents", as I will be such a gift to you all. emoticon emoticon

I just joined because I think (?) I may love this group. BUT, I am not that funny, not that bright (things go over my head easily, and no, I am not short), and easily confused. So, I should give you some laughs just being me. LOL.
