No particular persona for me. I've gone to Seattle's convention twice and had a grand time making several costumes for each. My deep sea diver and Baba yaga were the main ones.
The Mr and I are enjoying our first year in our own house so our creative projects are all on the homefront. We are still keeping it lightly steamy! Props from Mr's costumes have become wall art!

SKYBLUEGIRL: I’m an average seamstress as well; having learned watching my mother create master pieces in minutes. At least to my young eyes they seemed like master pieces. *LOL* And adding embellishments serves two purposes for me: 1) Enhance the article I’m decorating; 2) Hide all my sewing mistakes. *LOL*

SCARS2BEAUTIFUL: I love your SLO-MO camel! I bet she really move when provoked. Does she spit too? I have a pet dog named Echo 2.0 however, I’ve yet to actually create her. But she’s alive and well in my imagination.

Thank you dear lady for the compliments. ::curtseying::

Yes! I find those “final authority” types suck the fun out of everything; creating unnecessary boundaries, rules, laws and finally, oppression. Even strangling the imaginative process needed for progress and stimulating entertainment. I’m also in agreement with you on the reference of “Jack of All Trades, Master of None”, it fits me quite nicely.

ANYA_ONION: How is your boot search coming along? And the jewelry project too?

STELLAR-LIGHTS and STILLFLYIN: Do you have a steampunk persona?

Thank you PJ50! A corset can be fun but I ended up making a vest that went under the jacket that worked well. I am an average sewist but I do enjoy trying. I love embellishments! It's through those that I feel I can make things my own. Use general patterns and then add fun touches.

SKYBLUE: I just noticed your steampunk outfit on your SP page. I love it and you don’t wear a corset either? The whole outfit appears easily put together with some embellishments strategically placed. Again, great job!

Nice to meet all the new ladies here! Southwestern Michigan’s weather has calmed, leaving behind 1 foot of snow (I think?). But the Arctic temps as far from over here, as winter can last well into April. We need the moisture since last year we experienced drought events all over the state.

As for my Steampunk Persona: she is developing nicely. To help imagine what I am creating, titles and their descriptions came from Steampunk related articles discovered in my cyber-travels. My well seasoned [older] lady will be a combination of The Inventor/Scientist (I want to create robots and steam modes of land-transportation) and The Aristocrat (because I adore reading Victorian historicals), but with a splash of The Adventurer (because she was oppressed by social propriety so wasn’t much of a risk taker). She hates flying, but adores her newly created steam powered bicycle and carriage. Because I love westerns, she resides in the Midwest; Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, etc. Now how to get around that restrictive corset wearing…

ANYA_ONION: Oh… I am so sorry your boots don’t fit. A couple years I too threw out shoes because they were too small. There you go, make the jewelry for sale on your site. Never forgo a creative moment, just move that obstacle out of the way. Also, keep looking for those perfect boots.

STELLAR-LIGHTS: My SP never sends me email any more either. I’ve tried uncovering why that happens, from my end and on Spark People, to no avail.

SKYBLUEGIRL: FYI: I love anime, and manga too. Visited your SP Page, and adore your little gnomes and robots; quite ingenious and inspiring. Where’s a picture of your desk lamp? As for creating fashions for my Steampunk persona, STILLFLYIN’s simple yet functional Aviator Technician outfit design sparked my imagination. The fact she used no corset made it more appealing. And your, “…time traveling archaeologist or mysterious mad toy maker…” persona sounds intriguing.

SCARS2BEAUTIFUL: I too love the fact your shoulder angel/muse lives in a trunk; I’m imagining an old, well used trunk too, riddled with old-fashioned travel stickers. *S*

Please indulge me in a truth-seeking moment… You know, the most over used word in marketing today is – EXPERT. It’s so over used that consumers rarely make purchase decisions based solely on the “expertise” of the presenter. From my personal standpoint, being an expert is based on personal opinion, observation and experience. So…true “expertise” is not supported when advocating an item… it’s just a matter of knowledgeable opinion.

Bringing my “point” to a close (and hoping I interpreted your post correctly), my research and reading travels revealed this: ANYTHING Steampunk is only limited by the imagination of the person perceiving it - or living it. I, for one, am too busy masterminding creative ideas to be distracted by someone’s expertise. *LOL* So do what I do, let your imagination soar, dear, while enlightening yourself via other people’s EXPERT interpretations.

emoticon Skyblue and Stellar! Nice to meet you!

For some reason, Annie, I never realized your Det. Nanotechie was tiny. Duh! It's right there in her name! And I thought the steamer trunk space ship was like the Tardis--bigger on the inside.

I will keep my eyes out for another pair of boots. Trouble is I have big feet--size 11. It's very difficult for me to find shoes that fit. Very often I have to buy men's shoes, but only if they're unisex or neutral looking. I am a girl, after all and I want girly shoes! ::small hissy fit::

Ack! technology has failed me! I thought I got an email when folks were chatting in here! Instead I was missing the introductions and creative talk. So um,.. emoticon Hello! emoticon
Thank you PeaJay for being here to welcome folks.
Great to meet you both. I live in Oregon where we are still getting very cold rain but the spring bulbs are getting brave.
I love the jewelry AnyaOnion, something about the juniper berry necklaces really grabs me.
I hiope you'll both share pictures of costumes and projects and such we love to drool over each others creations. Did you see Skyblue's lovely desk lamp?
I've got to run but I'm looking forward to more chat. Have great days!

Hello Ladies - to those I haven't welcomed yet - happy to have you here! I love your jewellery ANYA. You've got great talent! It's been awhile since I've worked on any persona. I was thinking about it more last week when my husband tried to get Comicon tickets (HA!) Talk about impossible to get. He followed all the "instructions" and after a few attempts he ended up being 47,000th in line. Shortly after, and I am talking minutes not hours they were all sold out. It's hard to believe, but anyway I need to plan for a con to get me going on things. I have books and materials I just need inspiration! My daughter loves Anime' so we have attended a couple local cons that had a small Steampunk following. It's more fun if you just make things because you like to but with my life at the moment I need more of a concrete reason. It's inspiring to listen to your creative thoughts and ideas - maybe that's just what I need to get back to my time traveling archaeologist or mysterious mad toy maker. emoticon

I tried my boots on and as I suspected they are too small for me now. ::deep sigh:: I have two newer pair of ankle boots that I wear in nice weather, but they have zipper closures so the design I was thinking of making won't work because they are meant to be attached to the laces. Oh, well, back to the drawing board! (Hmmm, just had a thought . . . maybe I make the liveries anyway and put the boots and liveries up for sale in my shop.)

We got a few inches of snow overnight with more on the way. It is so pretty, everything is new and white again. It's just at this time of year, I start dreaming of green growing things.

ANYA-ONION: Yep...magpie or dragon, or raccoon too...they love those shiney bits of colored rock. I enjoy the creativity they spark while being handled.

I live in southwestern Michigan, 2 miles from Lake Michigan so get a lot of Lake Effect weather. We're getting hammered but its to be expected. Thankfully hubby does our snow blowing/shoveling - I hate the cold. I do all the yard work from spring through fall - he hates the humidity. Works out kinda nice... *LOL*

I've been over winter about 2 weeks ago...I'm seriously think about painting a wall a bright yellow for these wintery moments. Maybe it will keep my spirits happy until the spring thaw. *LOL*

SCARS2BEAUTIFUL: Hope your day is going well...sorry for missing you this morning.

I've got more organizing in store for me today. I'm integrating my mother stash of beads (mostly seed beads) into my own too. Plus I need to shift the crystals into a bigger bin. Happy, happy! I love touching the beads almost as much as making things with them. I must have some magpie or dragon in me! emoticon

Where do you live, PJ? I live in St. Paul, MN. We are expecting a big storm tonight so tomorrow I'll be shoveling. Oh, joy. I am soooooo over winter.

How is everyone today?

Doing well here… staying warm in spite of the wintery weather. Busy day planned: computer work and some crafting.

ANYA_ONION: Don’t forget to share your final product. I saw on my free craft ideas sites a body chain that resembled a vest. Simplistic, yet elegant. Funny that should pop up when I mentioned about body jewelry yesterday. Any other time I never saw such pieces.

I want to get into metal/wire work; stamping out my own gears and such instead of searching relentlessly for that unique piece. First I must free up time by completing my other projects.

SCARS2BEAUTIFUL: So true…so true. Imagination harbors no bigotry and is limitless. Thank you for the reminder. (((HUGS))) OH YES! Good Reads has several steampunk role playing outlets, because I found few book reading outlets of said genre. Check it out… *S* I know I am… *smiling brightly*

Thanks, PJ! I love creating, whether it be jewelry, crochet, journaling, mixed media etc.

One of my local bead stores is going out of business so they have a big discount on their stock right now. My sister and I went there yesterday to redeem our punch cards and see what was left. The only *steamy* thing I bought was a strand of pyrite donut-shaped beads (8mm?). Lovely luscious dark brown color with bits of sparkle here and there. I picked up a few findings too, so after I get back from chauffeuring the Papa, I think it will be a bead organizing day.

Ladies, your talk of jewelry making is inspiring, as is your talk about anything steampunk. I am itching to pull out my jewelry boxes and begin designing and crafting. Then get my graphics program fired up for some graphic design. Sadly, I committed to something else for the next two weeks… life sucks that way. *LOL*

ANYA_ONION: After visiting your Etsy site, your work is gorgeous and inspiring too. I adore boot jewelry too and the body chains as well. None of my boot-wearing, low-rise pants-wearing children would wear either – such fuddy-dudities (spell check?). But I do wear winter ankle boots (bought during my peri years) so can create for myself, hmmm… more design ideas coming to mind.

Yesterday I researched the creation of a persona and am looking forward to updating my personal web sites in the near future. Drafting the human-being will be the most fun…

SCARS2BEAUTIFUL: Oh! Your character sounds adorable and intriguing. Is she equivalent to a fairy? Also you’re a fantasy lover, huh? Because of your mentioning Dragon Con…

I have seen role-play boards on Good Reads and have secretly wondered about them. What does it entail? How does a person get started? How do I go about creating a persona for role-playing? I’m 50 yo, am I too old for such fanciful adult play?

I too, have never worn steampunk outside in the world either, and sadly, don’t intend to either. Unless I go to a Halloween party… But all this “not doing” doesn’t discourage me from admiring, talking about or contributing where I do feel comfortable; jewelry, web graphics, my reading material, etc.

K, Annie. I'll try to get some pics posted this week. They are on the other (slow) computer.

My next project I want to do from one of those steam jewelry books is a chain/fob thing for boots. I have an old pair of lace up ankle boots that would be perfect for this project. I haven't worn them in quite a while so I'm not sure they still fit. I'm 52 and my feet have grown up a size since my thirties.

Hi, PJ! I sell handmade jewelry on ETSY; some of them have a steampunk flavor to them. www.etsy.com/shop/VioletVerge?ref=si
_s
hop
But the pieces I've made that are obviously steampunk, I've made for myself from books on steampunk jewelry--so the design/copyright belongs to someone else.

Capt. Monsoon doesn't have her own website. She's more of an idea really--not very fleshed out yet. I have seen a few online persona websites though and they are intriguing . . . .

SCARS2BEAUTIFUL and ANYA_ONION – WELCOME to Steampunk Health!!!

ANYA_ONION, your street urchin style sounds intriguing. SCARS2BEAUTIFUL too, do either of you have a web site featuring your guise, Captain Magdala Monsoon, aviatrix AND Detective Nanotechie, CK-MATE (aviator call sign) Cary Strong? ANYA, what about your jewelry…where do you sell it?

I’m not so much into the aviator stuff but do enjoy inventions (can wear goggles there too) with a weird western influence. But I never thought of “really” developing a vivid persona – like a muse for sparking creativity. Hmmm… noting this idea in my “Ideas” tome.

emoticon Everyone! My friend Annie alerted me to the fact that there was a Steampunk group on Spark. How cool! I've always loved steampunk style and stories, but I didn't know it was a *thing* with a name and a culture. I've made a few steampunk jewelry pieces, but I don't have an ensemble for my persona--Captain Magdala Monsoon, aviatrix. I love the idea of wearing goggles to mow the lawn! Hehe, fun a.n.d. practical! Lately I've been drawn to the Street Urchin style of steampunk. I might have to make up a new character for that style!

Thank you for the warm welcome here and on my Spark Page. I am getting into jewelry making with steampunk themes. I am still in the idea stage of this endeavor. I would like to make some goggles for when I mow the lawn. *LOL* Give my neighbors something to laugh and talk about.

Hello everyone!

I am an old-timer to Spark People, just returning from a necessary sabbatical. I missed the interaction with others as I work from home. I am retired from corporate America and don’t miss the hour long commute (one-way), and at times, in hazardous weather conditions. No more deadlines, politicking, or one-sided diplomacy. *LOL* I live on 10 acres in southwestern Michigan, so can classify myself as a Gentlewoman Farmer; nuts and fruits mostly.

I love all things Victorian and just discovered steampunk which adds to my adulation. Not one for science but love the steam science presence in this genre. I also enjoy the weird western sometimes accompanying steampunk.

Looking forward to sharing steampunk moments with everyone.

Hi there!

I'm new here and new to steampunk, but not new to re-enactments, costuming and other such things. I'm 49 years old (as of the 15th of this month), love to create and explore and am excited about getting back in shape as well as learning more about steampunk. I'm a long time = though not in recent years - SCA, Renaissance Faire and Rendezvous goer - love to design and make costumes and jewelry and accessories.

I have been working out for some time, which helps me, along with proper diet, to ward off parkinson's and other health issues. I love weightlifting, dance and Zumba, Tai Ch and Contradance. I am starting to develop a training program so I can participate in the Warrior Dash here in middle Tennessee this year.

I am particular about my diet as I am allergic to most preservatives and artificial sweeteners. I am anti-GMO and like to eat as healthy as possible, and I do love to eat! I am not a vegetarian, but eat meats sparingly.

I have not as of yet developed a SP persona, but am developing a basic costume to attend Con Nooga in March. I am still learning and researching the SteamPunk world, but am highly enamored with it.

I live in the Nashville TN area, about 45 minute drive northeast of. I have 9 yr old daughter and am currently a homemaker. I love Sci Fi/Fantasy, especially British, and comedies.

Good to meet you all.

Lisa

So far it seems I'd rather make specific costumes rather than an ongoing persona. Unless it is otherwise provided I do make up stories in my head for each costume. Right now I am working on a Poe's Raven costume and a Baba Yaga costume. Do you have any events you are headed to soon?

Hi NEWGOALS2! Glad you found our team. I'm pretty new to Steampunk myself. It's a beautiful thing. Hope we can help cheer you on as your journey to healthy continues.

I have several ideas for persona's but need to start with just one - the possibilities truly are endless. Looking forward to getting to know you and your persona(s) Cheers!

I'm relatively new to the Steampunk world, but I've been hooked ever since I got my first taste. I don't really have a persona yet, as I'm still exploring the realms of possibilities - which seem endless right now.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on the threads.

Good to meet you Lauren! So glad you found this team too! I have yet to nail down a persona but the adventuring/traveling type is also a favorite. I am working on an archeologist but there are so many more character ideas and possibilities - it's a fun problem to have. emoticon

Oh my... I don't quite have an alter-ego... still finding where I fit I guess. I typically dress in adventuring/traveling clothes, but I'm in love with the fancier dresses. Currently toying with a harlequin idea... (building on it as well). If this works well, it'll become my alter. But my real self is called Lauren. =) Pleasure to be here, and am so glad to find this team!

Lady Adelaide, you may be the first of us with a true persona! Many of us have fleeting alter egos but lack a crew or regular gatherings to attend. Part of why this them has become an active little chat and costuming brainstorm.

Greetings, fellow voyagers in the aether!

My name is Lady Adelaide, consort to the famed Professor Horatio Octavius Algernon and Queen Emissary of the Dragonfly Faeries. We travel together with our crew on the good airship "Mariposa" (referred to by Abney Park as a "huge creaking wreck" - great song if you haven't heard it!). You can check out our group at www.meetup.com/Airship-Mariposa/ , where you'll see me along with the Professor, our crew, and our airship!

Happy travelling!

Too cool! There are so many possibilities to add to a costume. Weird tools that you define what they do can go in pockets or little open bags or whatever.

I got the little magnifying thingies that go on my glasses at Harbor Freight, too. It's a great place for lots of costuming things.

I am enchanted with this WatchMaker persona! I am open to suggestion, as I will most likely develop this persona into costuming possibilities! I'm thinking leather spats.
His name will be Tobias Alfred Bummeister, or something akin! I used to have a glorious watch circa 1892, but alas, I lost it in a move. I have a less authentic replacement as my magical timepiece. I have my eye on a brass sextant which are sold at Harbor Freight for $15. There was a broken on one the shelf. I can't believe I passed up an opportunity to acquire a brass mechanical object! *Thumps forehead with palm*

I'm not naming myself for any of my costumes. I just can't seem to get into it. It's enough for me to have a little bit of a back story and the fun of the costumes. I may change my mind later, but for now that's just how it is.

So I've named my two current alters- I feel a bit silly doing so since I don't do any actual role-playing but they deserved names all the same. So my journalist is Miss Thea Seldon, and My Sea Diver is Miss Jesamine Ebbeheart.
Since my mind isn't satisfied with the half dozen other ideas I have it latched onto the photo LADY.ELEA has of a steam-punk witch and now I want to make a steamed up Baba Yaga. I'm sure part of that comes from a short story I read recently featuring her- she wasn't depicted as all evil.Plus I love the chicken hut and want to make my own- miniature and carried around in a birdcage. La, more lovely distractions from everyday life.

I'd thought of mercury wings (I live in Nike town after-all) but didn't feel like it was quite enough to carry the persona. . I really like the air ship car hop idea .. that may be what I go for.
I had thought (after reading dreadnought) of doing a first responder EMT nurse on wheels, but I also thought with the book putting the nurse idea out there, the idea might be a bit too popular this next year for my tastes. (I wanna be original- just like everybody else!) Car hop though, . . that has potential. Thanks!

Maybe if you add in a theme for your delivery service, like Mercury perhaps: rodolforever.deviantart.com/a

. Otherwise maybe an automaton of some kind. Or an airship car hop? I can easily picture her steamed out www.ordercostumes.com/Soda-Sh

I want to create a costume including roller skates. I had thought of some type of messenger or delivery service person but it seemed a bit flat to me. Anyone have other ideas?

One of my pals was considering going as a hairdresser, but may change her mind. I thought it was a great idea that somebody should do! I like the idea of a mail carrier or message delivery person as well.

Well, thus far I too have two persona I am working on. The first is a Steampunk Priest, slightly deranged maybe, who wanders around preaching the glory of the divine clockwork. Complete with clockwork shepherds crook, book, censure and gear embroidered frock. (I hope)

The other is a communications specialist on an airship. Maybe pirate, maybe not, depends on who pays. This one is a ways of yet. Lots of stuff to make on both, we shall see how things turn out.

I love your marine biologist idea! And the "generic" get up can still be very shiny. I'm looking forward to your photos.

I need to come up with more steamy ideas for more costumes (World Con is a whole week) and just haven't been smitten with ideas. I have a mostly period correct Victorian outfit that I use when our sewing group is doing public education that I may modify for steamy uses, too. I need to think on it.

Very nice. I will be musing all day on such an impressive yet nameless ship.
Less nice is noticing that I mistyped steampunk on this thread title- Fah, doesn't seem to be any way to change it without re-posting. I will do my best to ignore it.
I currently have two costumes I'm working on and both still need names if not entire backgrounds. I'm doing a fairly generic ladies get up for a journalist I'm calling lady J for now. She is around mostly because I wont want to wear my other costume through a whole con weekend.
My other alter is inspired by my love of all things sea life and Seattle's con theme of 20,000 leagues under. She is a young eccentric marine biologist. She wears a victorian era swim costume and a deep sea diving helmet, add specimen jars, air pack and fishing net bustle of sorts. She is also lacking a name but I'm having so much fun crafting her ensemble! Will post photos as I get them put together.

Cool idea! I haven't fully fleshed out my alternate character. I have a photo on my SparkPage in costume. The costume will likely be modified as ideas and materials come available.

I'm a spaceship mechanic on a ship that my local sci fi club group is off and on describing so we will all be on the same ship when we go to WorldCon in a couple of years (we hope). Our thoughts are that the ship is worm hole capable and consequently, we will have the ability to leave our solar system and meet non-human entities. We haven't named her yet.

It seems appropriate on this team to introduce alter egos as well as yourselves. Share the concepts behind and the names of your steamland explorers!
