I never heard of the Rivendell/Eowyn challenge before I joined SparkPeople three weeks ago. I'm going to join and also login my one mile for last night. I plan to run a 1/2 next November, plus a couple of 10Ks (the Texas Bridge Series) and then a marathon the following Spring, so I hope to put in a whole lotta miles over the next 15 months!

Question: The Introduction and Guidelines Sticky Topic includes conversions for counting other activities into miles, including washing windows, dusting and vacuuming. Do any of you do this, or do you just count the miles you've actually traversed?

Hey everyone! I'm training for a marathon so I thought I'd log my miles here to make it seem less daunting. I'm from the UK and a teacher at a Secondary school (11-16 year olds)

Hi everyone!
I'm coming over here from the Eowyn Challenge team as that team seems to have died. I tried for a while to generate interest, but I think it is best to just let it go. I am a returning Sparker. My main form of exercise is walking.

If I dig through my old records I am somewhere on the way between Lothlorian and Rouros Falls. I decided to just start over in Hobbiton.

Don't wait for January first or even next Monday to start anew. Do it now!

Sexy comes in all shapes and sizes!

Hello, everyone! I'm Valerie, I'm 43 and from southwest Missouri. I had been aware of the Walk to Rivendell for many years and always thought it would be a fun way to track mileage. :) I started a small challenge group over on Endomondo with my friends. I've managed to get 12.04 miles completed so far. Between my small group of friends, a walking challenge I'm participating in on facebook, and this team, I am hoping that it will help keep me motivated to stay on track.

While looking around for challenges I found your group. The concept intrigues me so I thought what the heck, why not join. I live in Albuquerque NM and am lucky to have many fine walking, hiking and bike trails to choose from. When it's too hot, like it's getting to be now I have no problem using the treadmill. The walking is fine, it's the weight training that I hate to get back into, but I'll do it. I've managed to really pack on the pounds in the last 30 years, so now I'm going to give it a good try to lose them. I'm lucky my health is good other than the extra weight. Looking forward to the journey.

Hi, I'm Christine. I have a bad ankle, but I love walking, and am preparing for my second triathlon, so right now I'm doing Couch to 5K.

I am in, and from, Anchorage Alaska. I was a military spouse and have also lived in Northern MD and Mid-BEDS England.

I grew up slender and athletic, but just enjoyed rich food way too much. I know better than to assume that walking is not the solution to my weight problem (I weigh 260 lb), but it does give me something to do that doesn't involve eating.

The mighty oak was once just a little nut that stood its ground.

Hello, my name is MaryAnn. I am currently doing Weight Watchers online and also using SP. I found out about this group in a round-about way. I was just looking through the message boards on WW and was intrigued by this challenge called Eowyn's Challenge. I followed the links to the website and surprise, surprise I found a treasure! emoticon I love virtual walks. I searched here on SP for any teams related to the challenge and came across two...so this is how I found you all!

I am so excited to start my walk and will try to be constant in posting my daily miles.

Looks like fun, I love to go exploring! I'm joining this team now so I don't get sidetracked and forget about it, even though it's going to be a few more days before I can get back to some serious walking (alas, blisters on both feet... I got back into my walking program a little too enthusiastically this month). Looking forward to the adventure!

I discovered this challenge through a new Spark Friend, MissG180. I love all things Tolkien, and I also lack motivation to get enough miles in each week. I believe joining this team will help add a little fun and excitement to my workout routine. I hope to create some sort of art journal with some of the Middle Earth maps so I can keep a logbook of miles. It might be fun to listen to the audio of LOTR or Hobbit again...haven't done this for yrs. I own a dramatized BBC version of "The Hobbit"...that would be a good start. Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Hi everyone,

I hope it's ok to drop in and walk with you! I started the walk to Rivendell many moons ago and found it really motivating, and now I'm trying to lose a couple of stone and thought I'd start again. I'm quite excited to find a Spark Team to join in with. I like to get out and walk 3 or 4 times a week for at least 3 miles, but the weather at this time of year means I'm also using my Walk Away the Pounds DVD. Hope that's ok!

I hope you enjoy the 458 mile walk to Rivendell. We have some members on their way to and some on their way back...but all good fun.

Read the last comment I made on this thread and it may help you get started.
Good luck on your journey. Be nice if someone else posted their walk on the December thread.

Hi, everyone! I need some motivation to get me started working out again, and this seems like just my sort of thing. My plan is to start off with just walking, but work my way back up to "running" (my version is more of a sloooow jog) again. I *used* to be able to run 3 miles, but that's been several years ago. Now I'm battling inertia and depression, and hoping to make it out the other side.

My name is Mel and I live in Tasmania, Australia. My darling son gave me 'The Hobbit' for Mother's Day in 1988. It has been 8 years today since he died, and a sparkfriend told me to do something fun for myself in his honour. So how fitting that I start my adventure today by joining Frodo on his journey... now my journey too!

You have walked 2.5 miles.
You have passed Bywater.
It is 4.5 miles to the next landmark.
You have 455.5 miles to reach Rivendell.

Hi, everyone. My name is Erin, but I'm often called Demi online, because of the username. :)

My grandmother gave me a copy of 'The Hobbit' when I was seven, and I'd read 'The Lord of the Rings' by the time I was ten; it's continued to be a favorite of mine. I found the tracking site a while ago, saved the logs to my computer, and have been using them. Currently, I'm tracing Bilbo's trek from 'The Hobbit', but hope to eventually travel the full series. I used to log in to the site, but haven't for some time, and would prefer to keep things as consolidated as possible, since it makes it easier to keep track.

It was The Lord of the Rings movies that inspired me to read The Hobbit.. I had started Fellowship of the Ring right after seeign the movie in theaters when I was 14 but then someone told me that The Hobbit came first so I dropped The Fellowship of the Ring and picked up the Hobbit. I cant get enough of all of the books now!

One of my favorite memories is reading The Hobbit to my little sisters. We were on vacation, staying in a cabin with no electricity or plumbing out by a beautiful lake, and we found this wonderful, huge stump to climb on, and I read to them for hours at a time. They both wax fondly about that marvelous summer.

The Hobbit was one of the first books I read as an adult, which got me into reading on a regular basis. It is still one of my favorite books, along with the Lord of the Rings series. I do not have it but may get it from the library and reread it soon.

There are always changes and sometimes it is hard but it's only been a few years since I lsat read the book so I think I'm gonna notice some of the changes anyway. I can't wait for the movie though!

That's a great idea! I'm debating rereading it before the new movie or waiting until after. It's been 30 years since I last read it, so I'm thinking I will wait until after just so I'm not bugged by changes in the script for the new movie.

Hi! I'm just starting out with Bilbo's walk. The Hobbit is my favourite book and I want to read it again as I walk!

Raven, hi! Have you made the other walk, or are you starting with Bilbo's journey?

Hello everyone!
I have been on this team for a few months now but have not been on SparkPeople for most of that time due to overwhelming life schedules. I am back now and excited to be walking through Middle Earth with other people!
The path I am looking to take is the one Bilbo takes in The Hobbit from Bag End to Rivendell and then on to The Lonely Mountain.
I look forward to meeting everyone else along the way as we walk!

Welcome, MissG. I'm new to this team, too. I've been an individual walker, logging my miles at the Eowyn Challenge website under the name of ladyofthewood. It's good to have the company of another walker!

Welcome to the small group Miss G. We are few in active numbers but then the Hobbit adventure was also few, starting with two, then four then the Fellowship of seven then two to the end.

Hello! I'm a long time Rivendell walker and member of the Yahoo Group, but fairly new to Spark People, and it just occurred to me today that there might be an Eowyn Challenge group here! I am pleased to make your acquaintances, and for one more motivation on my walk!

I have to admit, I never registered anywhere or earned any shields, so I'm not much help there, but we're glad you're here! Keep us updated!

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Hello, fellow walkers ~

I have been walking as an individual walker on the Eowynn Challenge, have made it to Rivendell, and was on my way to Lothlorien. I am currently a little over 620 total miles, with 24 shields.

Admittedly, I don't log in every day. I keep a walking journal and log in on my Activity Tracker here at Sparks...then every now and then, I'll log in to the challenge site and add in any accumulated mileage. Today, I did that, but when I went to view my shields, I found out that the images are gone. My name is still there (ladyofthewood), my mileage and destination are still there, but the shields have been replaced by those boxes with the red x's that show up when an image is missing. Emails to the webmaster bounce back, I'm guessing because the site is no longer maintained.

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered something similar? I miss my shields! (And I'm blaming Orcs!)

Sue

P.S. Twenty minutes later and my shields are back. I knew joining this team would be magical!

Welcome to the group, sometimes the smallest active group on Spark, but as long as one is active, we stay around.

I am still walking 3-5 days a week, weather permitting mostly...

Hi there. I'm new to the group, but not new to Spark People. I saw this group on my friend's
ANUSCHKA9 page. It looked fun, so I had to join!

I've gone through the entire walk (from Bag End to Rivendell to Mordor and back)... a little over 8000 miles.

We're so glad you're joining us! Since 2002, that's impressive! How far have you gotten? Any specific distance/destination goals this time?

Hi: I've been doing the Eowyn Challenge since 2002 (shield name: Melisandriel). Someone started a "Walk to Rivendell" team on Spark but we never made it past 3 members. Glad to find you all.

Hello, everyone! I go by Frelga online. I've been doing the Eowyn Challenge since 2007, with a few breaks in tracking. I got to Rivendell and went on with the Fellowship. Walking and hiking is my favorite form of exercise, and I am very lucky to live in a superbly walkable neighborhood.

Looking forward to walking with you.

I'm Kim, from mid-western Michigan. I working on building up my strength and endurance for a marathon this summer. We'll see what happens! It's been cold so I'm using the elliptical a lot, but it makes my feet go numb and is very painful as I get up over 1.25 miles. So, I prefer to walk outside. It's just too cold!

It's supposed to get up to 30 this weekend so I'm hoping to put some mileage in outside. Will keep you posted!

Hi everyone! Glad to travel with you!

I should do this part right, soooo,hi I'm Rick and I am a fatty (quote I picked up from a new friend).

I retired on disability (5 back injuries) at age 36 and started adding the weight gradually until it caused other medical problems. When I have been trying, it is walking that seems to help the most, so I will try it no matter the weather, as long as the knee is usable (bad some days).

Do or do not, there is no try...

Alright, everyone, you know the drill! Let's hear a little about everyone, including, maybe, where you're walking in your journey to Rivendell.

My name is Tina, and my goal is to make a lifestyle change by eating better (and also eating natural, local, and organic), exercising more, and spending more time outside. I've always loved nature, but I've also always been very out of shape, and that's severly limited my outdoor activities. I hope to change that in the coming year.

I've gotten into skiing in the last two years, and now I can't WAIT for the ski season to come again. Out of everything, I'd have to say that skiing is my favourite exercise. I also recently got a job as a receptionist about two miles away from home, and I walk to work when I can. I keep my iPod stocked with my latest audioboook, and I've really come to look forward to being walking in our nice summer weather a few times a week. I'll be sad when the rain starts up again, and it's more difficult, and more soggy, to walk.

My fiance and I have also been walking more around our neighbourhood. Last night we walked about 5 miles round trip, through a beautiful, high class area with lots of tree, swimming pools, and big houses. We ended up at a river, looked around for a bit, then headed home. This is definitely the sort of thing I'd like to do more often!

I started this lifestyle change before I got engaged, but now that I have a wedding coming up, I have even more motivation! I'd like to look and FEEL my best on the best day of my life.

I think that just about covers it for me. I'd love to hear about everyone else!

The Road goes ever on and on

Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,

Until it joins some larger way

And whither then? I cannot say.
