I was talking to my daughter and she remembered my Uncle saying that they thought my grandfather was more Jewish that what was originally thought. So the next free day I get I will need to go to the Historical Library and research his mother. Her maiden name was Jurn. When looking at it I realized I didn't have anything else on her. Now I am curious what her mother's maiden name was.

Yes, that's another common problem we have researching our ancestry.

On the other hand, it's really amazing and exciting when you make contact with a fourth cousin living in Europe or South Africa or South America. Or maybe in the same state, a few cities away.

I don't have Jewish ancestry, but I just began researching for a friend whose family came from Russia/Poland in late 1800's/early 1900's. Problem is the family changed the name and having difficult time finding out what the original name was.

Yes, with years of persecution, many Jews chose or were forced to convert or at least hide their Judaism.

Thanks, will look into that. Someone else in the family put a book together on the Kohn's. I can understand why my grandfather denied it because of Hitler and the recruiting of Nazi's in America.
I have been basicly working on the English/Scot-Irish side of the family since no one seemed to know much. I wanted my children and grandchildren to at least see what country they originated from. I also keep going back to my ex's name of White. He seems to be lost somewhere in Detroit. Next will be the Schultz's.

Thank you for replying. Kohn is often a Jewish name. In fact, Kohns (Kohen or Cohen)are of priestly descent and have special roles they play in the synagogue even to this day. You may be interested in reading about it in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kohen)

Mine is German/Jewish even though my grandfather would never admit it. My uncle says he was at least half. His last name was Kohn.
