Hi Doris, I don't have any relatives at all in Canada, so I can't offer any leads for you at all. Good luck though. I hope someone can point you to a good source. Susan

Hi Peggy, I don't have any dates other that what I mentioned in my last post. That is what I am looking for too. If I could get some good, solid dates, then I could get a better handle on what and where to look. I found a couple of census entries, but it kind of took a dead end. I think (as I can recall from the last search I did) the decade when the census records burned up was a critical period for my searching. Another problem I had was that there were too many George Washington Wallaces to choose from. Besides that, I don't have any idea of how to go about finding birth records that far back and I suspect that they are nonexistent in that part of the country. I don't know if there are any genealogy societies or organizations in that area or not. Susan

Hi I just got back from camping. Wondering if anyone is doing Geneology in Canada. Quebec and Ontario. I am trying to locate family of my birth father Robert Whitemore. I have limited info. I do have some photos. He would probably be deceased by now but he must have some family. Would appreciate any help I can get. Doris-------- Canada

A big welcome from another Buckeye emoticon I was born and reared in Columbus and lived there for 53 years, then married a Texan and moved south to be with my sweetie. We are talking about moving to either TN or southern KY but I'm going to work on him and try to get him back to OH ~ lol

Have you been to the Historical Society in Columbus, up by the Fairgrounds? You can find a lot of information there and they can also guide you on how to do your research in AL, FL and other areas.

Another good place for guidance is the Franklin County Historical Society on W Broad and Gift St. The folks there are very helpful and helped me with a couple of areas I had trouble with years ago. That's worth the trip (when they are open ~ it's all volunteer) just to see the oldest house in Columbus, which was built before 1810. They might have resources that would help you in some way. You can check out their site here:

www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohfcghs/

My husband's family came from Fayette Co, AL (northeast area), and I've been wanting to go over there and do some research on his side and then on to NC where the Davis family originally lived. I read the other day where some of the records were destroyed by 2 different fires, about 30 years apart, so that will complicate things a bit and might be the cause of records being scarce in many areas in the south. His names for that area are Northam, Foard-Ford-Faure and Davis ~ that's all I've found online so far but I've not researched it much at this point.

Good luck as you research while losing pounds :) This is a good place to get a lot of encouragement !!

My paternal family names who came to America and settled in PA and then to the Shenandoah Valley in VA and finally to Fairfield County, OH were Boyer, Coffman/Cofman, Halderman/Holderman and Dowdel/Dowdell.

Thanks, Peggy. I'm looking for the father of G.W. Wallace. (May have been George W. Wallace whose spouse was, I think, Mary F. Nelson from Enterprise, Mississippi and maybe died in Bon Secour, AL ??? These are just tidbits I dug up one night on the computer, but that is all they are--just "maybes." The time frame is between 1845 and 1923.

The only concrete info I have is that my great grandparents were George Washington Wallace and Fannie Nelson who were the parents of my grandfather, Sim Roy Wallace born in Point Clear, AL on August 21, 1888. That's where I began. Thanks for getting back to me. Susan

Thanks for the reply. I don't have Ancestry.com at home, but do use it at the Genealogy Society and the public library occasionally. I have found lots of info from OH, PA and VA, but there doesn't seem to be as much info available from the areas that I think my ancestors are from in AL and FL because I believe there weren't many required documents available in those areas that far back. I did get what I do know from what few relatives are still living and a dab from the census records, but the family seemed to disappear as they got older.

Welcome from Idaho. I don't have ancestors from those states but I would say start with the Census. Do you have Ancestry.com? It is expensive but they have so much you can access.

I'm a member of the local Genealogy society here in Fairfield County, Ohio and have been researching my Ohio family roots, but I have very little information on my maternal side relation who were from Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Not sure where to start--especially in the panhandle of FL and Ala. Would appreciate any help.
