Hello everyone, I have been interested in genealogy since 1985. I have walked many cemeteries in the beginning to get started. In 1985 we did not have computers so all the work was done at a library or county hall. What a difference it is today. I have not done any research in a long time. Hope to get back into it soon.

Happy Hunting,
Ruth

Hello, everybody! emoticon I'm Susan, but since I see you have another Susan here already, you can call me Sparkle so there's no mix-up. Many of my Spark friends call me Sparkle anyway.

I'm not new to Spark but I am excited to join your team and talk with others with a passion for genealogy. I worked on my mom's side of the family for a while. One of my dad's cousins did extensive research on my dad's maternal line, and I'm just picking up where she left off and also fleshing out the ancestors already identified by locating their WWI military registration cards (which includes a physical description, which is just too cool to discover because I don't even have black and white photos of them). Fleshing them out by discovering birth records, census records (although those can be frustrating because of spelling errors by the census takers!), marriage certificates, death certificates.... all of this information makes them seem more like the real people that they were and learn more about their daily lives. I enjoy doing all of the detective work, but I've discovered that I cannot get on FamilySearch.org to look up "one little detail" because I get sucked in so easily and lose all sense of time. I definitely cannot look up "one little detail" just before bed because hours go by and before I know it, it's 3 a.m.!

I have much more to tell you about, but it's more than just an introduction, so I'll leave it here for now. I'm very happy to join your team and I look forward to getting to know you all better and also learning more about genealogy from you!

Hi!~ Thank you.

One of the things that I found are seriously precious love letters from my grampa to my grampa way back in 1925 and 28.

I keep looking for an excuse to get them out and re-read them.
They were written in cursive and a few of the words are hard to figure out. I'm going to type them up and save them to my computer. Probably scan them, too, so people can judge for themselves what the words are.

My favorite line is "What could be sweeter than married life?"
He had been talking about his years in the orphans' home and being bossed around and not having his 'own life'. He was looking forward to creating a home together where they could do just what they wanted.

love it love it love it!

And we all lived happily ever after...

Hi! I'm Susan and I've been around on Spark since 2009.
My mom was BIGGGG on Genealogy and I often helped with some research.
She's got gobs of info on my dad's side of the family as well as her own.
Of particular interest to us was a 'missing' aunt who had been 'adopted out' away from the other four children at birth, because my great-grandmother had died after giving birth (in a mental health hospital, no less). The great-grandfather either 'gave the kids away' or they were taken from him. Interesting story which I will probably share more of as I get to know folks.

Anyway, My mother passed away in December 2016 (pretty unexpectedly) and my DAD died this June (DEFINITELY unexpectedly). Losing both parents within 6 months is heartbreaking enough, but we also lost my sister to cancer Thanksgiving weekend 2012, my father-in-law and grandmother (both unexpectedly) in 2014, just a few weeks apart. sighhhhh.

But since my parents passed away...guess who is in charge of alllllll Mom's genealogy files?

ME!

eeeek!!!!!

emoticon Hi,

Joined Spark in 2009 to help lose the 15 pounds I had gained back after maintaining weight for over 5 years...now back after many bumps in the road, horrible coping skills, and gaining 60 pounds.

I joined Ancestry in 2008. I am the youngest child of youngest children on both sides, so most stories were pretty scarce when I came along. I did a DNA test after the family tree was not conforming to family lore. Wow, does that clear things up. I gave my brother the test for his birthday, no new countries/areas, but I can tease him about my higher percentage of Irish & Italian...sibling silliness.

Looking forward to your knowledge and support.
Nan

Thank you for the compliment. We live on the coast in Coos Bay. We both went digital about 10 years ago. I have to say it has been a learning curve but I love it.

No, you do not become a lifetime member when you take the DNA test. They are totally separate. The cost of the DNA test covers only the test, no membership.

However, as I mentioned before, you can also upload your results to other resources at no cost.

I was wondering if you become a lifetime member of Ancestry after you have the DNA test, or they still want you to pay $19.99 a month for the full experience of the site. I'm really not comfortable with that price! I think I can do my own research more cheaply.

P.S. My family came from Missouri, before they emigrated to Oregon on the Oregon Trail.

Hi, Auna. Welcome to the group.

I have done DNA to verify family connections & have also worked with adoptees using DNA to find their birth families. I would recommend beginning with Ancestry DNA test because it can be transferred so many places at no cost.

Any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hello, everyone! My name is Auna Blessing, and I live in Portland, Oregon. I live with my family in the same house we've lived in for 41 years, a Craftsman-style home, which is a 'Century Home'. It's 106-years-old this year! It needs a lot of renovation, that we can't really afford, but it's cool to stay in a place with so much history. I have been really frustrated in the past, trying to get information out of my family, so that I could create a complete family tree, going back at least a few generations. Unfortunately, one of my grandmothers was a Jehovah's Witness, and they are against geneology, since they view it as a sin against their church. To them, you have your family, if you're in the church. The church is your only family. I got nothing from her when I wrote to ask her questions. When she died, I finally found out her maiden name, which is Scottish. Finally! My grandfather, who was her husband, was adopted, and I only know his last name prior to being adopted. I asked her if she knew his parents names, but got that stone wall I was talking about. I'm not sure she knew that, had forgotten, or just wasn't telling because of the policies of her church. So my family tree is a bit lop-sided. I have a ton of info from my mother's side, but next to nothing from my paternal side. I am thinking of getting DNA testing, because it can help u fill in missing pieces of your tree. It can connect you with people who have a common ancestor, which would be invaluable, as a form of fact-checking with my grandfather's ancestors. You know, if I know who has to be on the tree further down, it can help eliminate some people, who don't match the facts. His family came from Germany, and tried to farm in Texas, but lost everything, including their children. But I looked up the last name in the census records of that time, and their were many couples from Germany with that same last name, who came to Texas at about that same time. And they all could be related! Perhaps I can locate the adoption records. I hadn't thought of that before. Anyway, I am in my 40s, and I think I'd better be more persistent if I am going to learn any more of my family history. I don't have any children, so this is just for my peace of mind, and a way to enrich my other family. I don't know of anyone else in my family to get the testing, so I am probably the first! It's really exciting. It will help us to verify if our other family history that we've gathered is accurate, or if mistakes were made. It's going to be a win/win for both sides of my family! I'm going to skip the test that gives medical info. I'm not really interested in that right now. Maybe in the future, but I just want things simple right now. On my mother's side, we've been able to go way back, to about the time of Christ. And, of course, I'm dying to verify that! So have any of u had the DNA testing, and was it a good experience?

My maternal great great grandfather published a genealogy of twelve pioneer families that settled Lawrence county Missouri. Working from this and what I knew of my father's family I wrote a 200 page book that follows up on our family. The book included tidbits that expands on that basic history. I had three 3-dimensional boards displaying family tree using items to illustrate each to the degree possible.

Hi Everyone! My name is Cathy and I've been working on my family's genealogy for years! My maternal Grandparents used to tell me stories about our history when I was a kid and I've been fascinated with learning more about my ancestors ever since. My Mom's family was fairly easy but my Dad's has really made me search long and hard for every scrap of information! I retired 4 years ago and thought I'd have plenty of free time to work on my projects, but somehow my days seem busier than ever - I can't quite figure that out! I'm working on a "Genealogy Do Over" for the last few months because when I first started my tree I wasn't the best at documenting my sources, so I'd like to remedy that now! I look forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome to the group, Vicki. My roots are also in the south & I grew up in St. Louis. I have several ancestors who qualify for DAR & other groups, but I haven't applied. I did provide the line for one of my cousins who was very interested in joining DAR though. I have also done DNA testing which has confirmed lineages pretty far back. I expect that eventually the organizations will begin to accept DNA since DNA doesn't lie.

Hi, my name is Vicki. I am a long time spark member (off and on) but new to message boards. I'm a retired mother of three boys and a grandmother of 8. I have been doing genealogy for 17 years. My family on both sides are from the south but I was raised in northern IL. I've made more than a few trips south for research trips and visit family. I am a prospective member of DAR, just looking for the couple missing pieces of proof, which I hope to find in my upcoming trip to Alabama in June. Did my DNA which helped to prove the many lines I have traced back (DAR doesn't, recognize DNA). Glad I found this group!

Hi, I'm new here. I'm married, have 2 kids. (boys, 8 and 2 1/2). I'm hoping to shed the 40 lbs I'm still hanging onto from my last pregnancy. I'm a dialysis RN, and my only "hobby" is geneaology. I'm working on taking all our lines back as far as I can to make a book for the boys. My husband and I both did our DNA through ancestry and that's helped confirm some lines. Piece of advice though, don't do it unless you're ready for surprises.

Excited to be here!
Margaret

Hello Everyone~
I just saw this thread today and even though I've already been posting responses to questions, I thought I'd formally introduce myself.
I'm a native Californian who has escaped twice to the south. My family is from LA and KY by way of, well, I'm still trying to figure that out, either VA, NC, and/or MA. (from Belgium and Ireland/England/France).
I lost weight in 2007 and kept it off for 7 years. Then life through me a bunch of curve balls and I didn't pay much attention, I just thought my body was "going through the change." I thought I'd let my body do it's thing and then fight the bulge. However! I found out that stress can cause the same problems. WHAT?! nuh-uh. But the more I read about it the more I'm starting to believe it. Okay, so enough is enough. I still eat really well, but I've cranked up my exercise, which sometimes also puts my body is flight/stress mode, but I'm doing the exercises in a non-speed mode, hoping that the length of time helps, instead of the hummingbird method.
Anyway, I'm a mom of three, grandmother of two at the moment. I love the south; the people, courtesy, the slower paced life, the country.

emoticon Joyce here. Been a Spark for 5 years now.
Did a lot of family research back in 1980's...then got busy raising 6 children (foster parent/adopt)

When the house burned down in 1998, I said I was done with genealogy since all my papers had burned....then about 2 years ago I discovered FREE web sites where you can put information up in some cloud that will not burn with your house....So... emoticon and I am back working on it and attempting to get all the stuff in my memories loaded into the clouds.

Hope to enjoy this team

Hello! My name is Carol and I've been on Spark for about four years. I was adopted as an infant and found my birth mother about eight years ago. I never got to meet her but I now know my five siblings. She never revealed my father's identity. Fast forward to last Christmas when my husband gave me an Ancestry.com membership. I fiddled with it and then purchased and submitted a DNA sample. Lo and behold, my first DNA match turned out to be a sister on my father's side. She has been working on that branch of the family tree and I started on my mother's side. I've been working mostly with family trees because I need to save my pennies for access to the British records. So far it seems my mother's family is anchored in Northamptonshire. I'm eager to learn of more resources I can get to outside of the Ancestry.com structure. My father's family may be from there but I've been stymied at just a couple generations up. I'm now 70 years old and retired, so I want to get more serious about this work and about my weight loss, which has been going the wrong direction for awhile, particularly since I had surgery a year ago. I'm looking forward to getting acquainted with team members.

Carol

Good morning, I'm Donna, 56 yrs old and from Ohio. My genealogy lines consist of Carroll, Rice, Stephens, Hood (Hoed), Gollihue (Gallihue, Gallihugh, Gollihugh), Gill, Finnie, Simmons, etc. Most come from the Kentucky, W. Virginia, Virginia area.

I've been on SP for quite a few years. Everyday an adventure.

Hi! I'm Ramona. I've been on Sparkpeople.com for several years off and on but regularly since 7/24/11. I'm a genealogy nut and working on my family history - all of it! Just was contacted by a 3rd cousin on Dec 30th on my Mom's mom's side of the family - one that I only know 2 people on, so this was thrilling. Can't wait to meet up with this side of the family later this year.
I'm doing the best I can each day - not all successes but I learn from the bad days.

Start with small steps and momentum will build. Celebrate moving in the direction of increased happiness now! With a plan and persistence moving towards your goals all things are possible! Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for everything you have. It may not be what you want be show you're thankful for it anyway.

And Jeanne and I became friends in FB gen groups. We may be related, depending on what she finds out about one of her brick walls someday, or when I finally do DNA testing. The last time I was in Pennsylvania with my family we were actually able to meet in person. She is helping a friend of mine with her family history. Shirley is 80 (or so, I'm not sure of her exact age) and the last one left in her generation, so she wants to make sure that she gets her own story and as much as she can of her family history written down for her own descendants and those of her sister. I've known Shirley for decades, so I know that is a complicated and interesting story and its giving Jeanne a different sort of workout!

Good morning. My name is Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman. I have been doing genealogy work for quite some time now. Most of my work centers in Pennsylvania. I am on FB both personally and as Genealogical Gems. I tweet as @GenealogicalGem and I blog at Genealogical Gems (http://www.genealogybyjeanne.blogspot.com
/).

When I am not working on genealogy, I am either with my girls or at work in the nursery, which is where I get a lot of my workouts in!

Hello everyone. I'm Minnie from Yorkshire in England. My Mum has always been interested in finding out more about her family tree so around 6 years ago I started researching. I made an album of her family tree as a 70th birthday gift for her.
Well after that I was hooked! I'm sure you all know how it is. I've also researched my Dad's side of the tree and my husband's family tree. I do almost all my research online. I love that there is always something new to find out!

Hi I just joined this group but have been with SparkPeople off and on for years (based on when I had internet access). That also describes my time doing Genealogy. I started it December of 2001, but it is off and on based on access to do research. I do not have a car so that makes some of it difficult. I do not have documentation to verify my findings but I have fun anyway. I do not stick to just one line. I do whatever strikes my fancy for the day. I have lines off in every direction. I make jokes that one of these days the way the branches cross and everything I will find I'm related to myself. I look forward to getting to know you. I will try to make a list of the surnames I have researched some.

Peace my friends...

Hi, I've actually been here more than a few times and kept leaving because of health problems. I'm stronger now and ready to be active and lose this weight. I love genealogy and recently got my dna results from 23andme which left me with a few answers and more questions.

Hello, my name is Pattie. I saw this team and thought I would give it a try. I have been doing genealogy since 1982 and have been hooked since then. Life gets a little hectic from time-to-time, and I lay low sometimes, but genealogy is always on my mind. I have many other hobbies also, I live in Arkansas and have been here for 35 years. I am originally from Pennsylvania, Allegheny Co. I have been on SP for almost 1 year and have so far taken off +/- 90 pounds. The holidays have been hard on me. I am trying to get back on track. I was excited to find this team.

Hi, my name is Linda and I am owned by 2 cats. I'm 67 and live in Maryland. Have always been interested in my roots. My cousin actually has maternal history. He is older and I am not sure if he just forgets or doesn't care to share his knowledge with others. I have never seen it. I don't want to sign up for something that costs right now. No job. Looking forward to this group. Already see some of my SP friends are here.

Hi, I'm back was a team member a couple years ago and took a brake from SP. Now both my sister and I are retired we joined forces of course she had to verify everything I worked on for the last 25 years. emoticon . She was amazed that I actually had a solid trail to Edward Fuller of the Mayflower on Mom's paternal side. Now working on her maternal side. Sis isn't as interested in Dad's side right now but I'm plugging along.

Hi everyone. I started working on my family tree when I was a girl, with my grandfather's help. In recent years, I have become much more addicted to it. I have recently been helping a friend with a Chinese American family tree, which has been absolutely fascinating.

I was bedridden for long months more than once in the last 5 years, and genealogy was a wonderful respite that I could do in bed. Happy to say I am doing much better now and have been back with SP for a little over 40 days.

Karen, since I'm sure that you're not the only one with questions like this, I'll answer publicly. One of the places that you can find information like this is the website for the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG). www.apgen.org You can search the directory of members for those who live in or specialize in (not always the same thing) the area where you need help. I would generally recommend searching for someone who specializes in a particular area rather than just searching for someone who lives there. In any case, make sure to read their directory entry. I regularly receive inquiries for services I don't provide, when if they read my directory entry they'd have known what I do.

The other possibility is less helpful for those who need help with non-North American records. There are a number of APG chapters. The chapters are listed on the APG website, with links to the chapter website that lists their members, a bit about them, what they do, and their contact information. Most, if not all, chapters are in the US and Canada.

I know people who specialize in some countries but unfortunately I'm not acquainted with any of those who specialize in Belgium.

Hi, my name is Karen and I've been researching my family tree for about 14 years. I have found so much amazing information on my family that it was easy for me to become addicted to doing the research. The majority of my information comes from my dad's side. I have had a lo of difficulty with my mom's side. If anyone has any ideas or information on how to obtain a birth certificate from Belgium, could you message me please. My great-grandparents were all born there and I'd like more information on them. Looking forward to sharing with this group.

Slowly but surely over a period of a couple of years, the pounds accumulated- a few pounds overweight became 10... 20... 30... 40... and, two days ago, topped out at 51 pounds over my recommended weight. A friend of a Facebook friend of mine happened to mention SparkPeople, and all omens seemed to be auspicious. I am ready to begin this journey. I am humbled to be in the company of so many courageous people. The stories of success and struggle are inspiring.

I have been actively working on my Hungarian/German/Irish/Scottish genealogy for about five years and enjoy the process very much.

Sometimes I index records for FamilySearch. I've had the honor to help a friend get started with her Armenian family tree recently, too. I have included thousands of extended family members on my ancestry.com tree. I am beginning to also create a back-up tree of direct relatives and ancestors on FamilySearch. I belong to Hungarian, German, and Irish ancestry Facebook groups, which has been enormously helpful.

So many great ideas. I hadn't even thought about taking pictures with my phone of old pics or documents. I'll let you know how it went.

Perfect timing! That is a great way to get started! Get copies of any documents he has - photographs with your phone are a fine way to start. Photograph, write down, or record with audio or video anything you can. Don't count on your memory. When I started researching my mom's side of the family I kept a notebook handy and wrote down questions as they came up, then I'd call her and run through my list and write down the answers. And don't just ask him about what he knows about his ancestors. Ask him about his life and what he knows about what his parents' lives were like. I learned so many things about my own parents' lives. I even learned a lot from talking to my own siblings and my cousins. (of course, my oldest sibs are more than a decade older than I am and some of my first cousins are 20-30 years older than I am.)

That reminds me of one of the first tips someone gave me. Use full-size sheets of paper for your notes. It sounds funny, but its so easy to lose a post-it or something that size.

Terri, Familysearch.org is free and has a number of records - more all the time. If you can give us an idea of where you need to find records, as much as you know so far, we may be able to give you some more ideas.

Keep in mind that Ancestry always has some records that you can access for free and that Fold3.com (mostly military records) also always has some records that you can see without spending money.

Hello, I've been on SparkPeople since 2009 off and on, but I've finally gotten serious about it. I'm starting to see some progress finally so I'm excited about that.

My son is in his last year at FSU and has a wonderful girlfriend who joined him there this year, so I'm on my own for a bit and wanted to do something special for his graduation gift so I decided to do a Family Tree for him. I've been poking around on Ancestry.com but I haven't jumped in and signed up yet. I'm saving that for after my busy season at my job, which will be ending around Thanksgiving. I'm interested in any other ways to research that wouldn't cost me anything until then.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone, Terri emoticon

I'm not exactly new to SparkPeople. I had a little success with it about FIVE years ago & then for whatever reason got lazy & quit doing the things I needed to do to live a healthy lifestyle & lose some of the weight I so desperately needed to be rid of. But I'm trying to get back into the groove. I haven't actually begun to work on my diet yet, but I'm taking a slow path in that direction with other healthy choices, such as establishing a regular sleep pattern, moving more, & drinking more water. Hopefully I'll be ready to put the other foot in within the next week or so.

With regard to my genealogy, I've been working on it off & on since I was about 12. One of my cousins put together several typed family group sheets naming all my cousins and their children along with my aunts & uncles, parents, grandparents, & great-grandparents. That sparked my interest and now as an adult my interest has grown into a full-fledged genealogy addiction. I really need to start getting things written down as far as the family stories are concerned. But I enjoy the thrill of the hunt so much . . . . . . . LOL

All things are possible with God.
