Yeah, I have a subscription to ancestry.com, too. It's just so wonderful what is available online now! A couple of years ago I had to be near DC for something, so I stayed a few days extra and went to the National Archives. it was absolutely amazing to sit there with documents in my hands from the civil war. amazing. :-) But I'll take online, too, since it's not possible to actually get into archives like that every day! Norway is putting everything online for free!!! I wish that were the case for the stuff that's in ancestry. oh well. Norway's not as large a country, I suppose. But free is so nice - everyone can access it that way - and not just those who have the money.

I also use the FTM. I love it. I started off with Generations Family Tree from Sierra, it was ok, But the FTM is so much better.

I have hit a brick wall whit my husband's family. Baeza, Encinas, Zamora, and Haddad. they were mostly in the Texas, Arizona, and California areas. I can only go back so far a smy mother-in -laws grandparents on the Encinas side and just her father on the Baeza side. Father born in Marfa TX. Mother born in Hayden AZ.

Hi all, since we've gotten into brick walls now, I can say that our current wall is William Crum (or Wilhelm Krum or Wiljem Krom or Crom or Crumb or who knows?!). He married Lucinda Hubbard. She's another wall, but we seem to be making headway on her.

William is as far back as we have been able to take it on my mother's father's father's side. William was born in 1773 and died in 1832 in New York. We don't know if he was German or Dutch or Scottish or if he was the one to immigrate to America. Sigh. It makes life interesting digging, but I do wish a little hole would open up. Here's the link to what we have: www.paintedpost.dk/crum.htm

Betsy,

Ripley is just outside of Charleston, where I lived. My husband's family is from that area....Kentuck. Kiser is the family name. I'll ask him about Fischer.

Here is the link to the Jackson County, WV, historical society web site:

www.rootsweb.com/~wvjackso/JACK.HTM

I'll keep your Fischer in mind when researching. I just got over a stumbling block of my own and was jumping up and down literally when I discovered that someone I thought had died, actually divorced/remarried. Also, her maiden name was not Martin as I thought, but Morten, and now I can track her parents. Cool beans!

Jackie, yes Maples would still be our line. I haven't run across a Dalton Maples, but will keep it in mind. My Maple line comes out of PA.

Thanks for the welcome!

Stephanie - I have lots of family connections like that on my mother's side - New Brunswick by way of Acadia! It gets even more fun when widows marry brother-in-laws and widowers marry sister-in-laws!

Carol - I have an Elizabeth Rebecca Fischer born in Ripley, WV dob 1/5/1850 that is a brick wall for me. The story goes that her sister and brother-in-law went out west and in order to travel with them she married George Griggs. Griggs dies in Colorado leaving Elizabeth as a widow with three kids working as a cook in a logging camp where she meets and marries Byron Lowell with whom she has 7 kids. I would love to find her parents and first marriage info. Any ideas of where or who to check with? I'm in New England and can't travel to WV so your input would be a big help.

Jackie - FTM has an export option that allows you to create a GEDCOM file. GEDCOM is a standard for importing and exporting genealogy information between different programs. If you do a web search for "Brother's Keeper" you will find the Brother's Keeper software program and from the home page you can download a free version of their software. It provides a limited access so you can try out the program. A more extensive program is available for a fee.

Betsy, I do not understand gencoms. (or what "download from net a free trial version) means. I haven't looked into Brother's keeper but plan to. Could you explain those to me? I do know FTM pretty well.

Genealogy is my fun stuff and I make myself get work done first but work load is nearing an end and I'll be on my FTM and other searches and learning soon.

Carol, glad you joined and delighted that you found the fun, interest and intrigue in genealogy!

My DH's cousin (whom I've never met) is married to Dalton Maples. Do you think your family dropped the s or that Dalton's family added it?

I do not have any information on Dalton except his wife was born about 1963 so I assume he is in that age range. I do have an email address for her. Just haven't delved into specifics on the family for my records - yet. I think they live in KY now. Jackie

Wow!! My newest passion is genealogy research and in looking for boards, I just typed it in the search....can't believe there is a board for us.

I'm new to family research. My husband got me started. I come from a divorced family and didn't know another person with my same last name, Maple, besides my father and grandmother my entire life. All my grandparents, but one were deceased.

I have one living aunt who loves to talk about family history and as a gift to her because she is in her final days, I used my DH FTM to look up a few things. Well......I was hooked.

Six months ago, I couldn't have told you my Grandmother's name, now I know relatives generations back. I've had amazing discoveries and for the first time in my life, I feel a real part of my own family.

Glad to have you people to share the journey to self-discovery with....both physical and thru family history.

Maybe we should advertise somehow that we are here!!

I'm Carol, from wild and wonderful West Virginia.

Glad to meet you!

Hi BDTEACH! After you mentioned Brother's Keeper, I found it on the web and downloaded the free version. I've been too busy at work to find time yet to play with it, but I really really like the idea of the charting options it offers. For example, it turns out that my mother's grandfather and grandmother were first cousins - those Norwegians. And Family Tree doesn't like to put merge branches like that. so I was going to try to export the FTM to a gedcom and import it to BK and see if I could get a good chart that way!

(I really don't think that either Mom or her mother even knew that they were first cousins. :-) I think it was a quietly held secret. The more research I do, the more I discover how common it was for nieces and nephews to come over and live with their aunt or uncle and become the eventual bride or groom of a cousin. Or maybe it was mostly the Norwegians! back then, at least. :-)

Genealogy is just so interesting and so fun.

I use FTM also and I download the gedcom to "Brother's Keeper" (download from net a free trial version) which does whole file reporting. I like BK's reporting options much better too. You can really customize to what you want!

I use FamilyTreeMaker and have been very happy with it, but it would be nice to be able to do entire file reports instead of just immediate families.

Hi and Welcome! I know what you mean. I was thrilled to find a team, too. So as one newbie to another, welcome! :-)

I wish I had time to take a course or two. Maybe some year when I am retired! What genealogy software do you use?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and was thrilled to see a genealogy team. I have been absorbed by my family history hobby for about 8 years now and still spend hours a week on it, so much so that I am now taking online courses through the National Inst. for Genealogy Studies.

I'm really looking forward to sharing experiences with all of you - both relating to weight loss/health improvement and genealogy.

I like being able to print out everybody with a missing field (like dob) including identifying fields (like parents, spouse) so I know when I find/search a new source I can try to get anyone from that area which gives me a more rounded picture. And who knows when/how unrelated persons might end up as family somewhere down the line (or up the tree!)

OOh, that's true about the reports. I use Legacy charting companion for reports, but I like the sound of Brother's Keeper and being able to generate reports regardless of relation. that's a neat aspect!

I used to have a key to a Genealogical Society bldg and would go in at 6pm and stay until 8AM. Why sleep when I could find more relatives?!!

I use FTM but I do like the report system for My Brother's Keeper. It lets you work with the whole file not just direct line descendents/ancestors. I have over 15,600 individuals in my file (not all related). Whenever someone asked me to do some research for them, I add it to my file because there's a good chance that if we go back far enough there is a common ancestor in there! My computer (the one with my gen files) has been down since 2005 so I'm anxious to get a new computer and get back into the vortex at home!!

I use Family Tree Maker, too, and I haven't tried all the programs out there, but I really do think it must be the best. I really like it. About the Bixby's in MN: there are so many of them and they all originate basically from the same one, so we are probably related in that way, but our Bixby's who lived briefly in Fargo and Moorhead, MN, all moved on to California. So unless someone was left behind that we don't know about, I doubt that it's a direct connection.

I think the Vortex is going to get me over Christmas break. I can feel it pulling.

Stephanie, you are being creative with your tree. It is great! I'm using Family Tree Maker and love it. I have about 1700 names on it and it's growing...

I too get immersed in genealogy enough so that I limit my time with it - gotta get my other work done first - then I can play!

I vaguely know of a Bixby family in St. Paul, MN. You have traces of Bixby in MN but I didn't see St. Paul however maybe there's a connection .... Jackie

Hi. It just occured to me to look to see if there were any genealogy groups here at SparkPeople. And surprise, surprise - or not! - there are! so I just joined. I've been working on my family genealogy for about 5 years now and have a website I created: genealogy.homepage.dk/

This is a passion that I don't think I'll ever tire of, and we still have some major brick wall that we run into, but man when I get sucked into the genealogy vortex, I forget there's another world out there! How many of you have spent days where you find yourself still in your robe at 11 o'clock at night?! emoticon sheesh. I love it and I hope that I can learn from you and maybe be able to help some of you, as well.
