RAMONAANNE51, Thank you very much for your kind response on 11/24. I didn't see it until just now--after I wrote my message below. I still have not been able to share my actual weight, but made a big step in saying how much I need to lose. Often times, I refuse to let them weigh me at the doctor's office, unless it's my physical. Then, I tell them not to tell me what the numbers are. Well, I think I've gotten past that in the last few weeks. The scale may not be my friend, but it's not my enemy, either. It's just a tool, another way to track what's happening. Thanks again for your kind words and encouragement. Hope your holidays are happy and HEALTHY! :-)

Hi Everybody!

I started with SparkPeople on Sept. 15th, 2012 and am loving it! Until SparkPeople, I had just given up on the idea of becoming healthy once again. It was such a daunting idea that I just pushed it out of my mind. I have so much weight to lose (and so many wonderful things to gain) and realized early on that this is going to be a very long journey--so I'd best savor the sights along the way. It took me a long time to gain all this weight, and it's going to take a long time to take it off (safely and in a healthy way), and even longer time to maintain it if/when I get there! (Like the rest of my long and healthy life!)

I was interested in a SparkPeople article about a research project where one group lost weight normally and the other group actually maintained their weight before starting their weight loss regimen. After participants in both groups lost their weight, they followed them to see how well they maintained their weight loss, and yes, you guessed it. The second group maintained their weight loss to a much greater extent. It makes such good sense to me to take it slow and to pay attention along the way. In fact, I figure I'm way ahead when I don't lose any weight, because you know what that means? It means I haven't gained any weight! The way I was going, maintaining my weight puts me way ahead. I also think it's much more healthy to take it slow. So, here I am. Thanks for being here for this very important and special journey. My life depends on it. I couldn't do it without SparkPeople--and that means you!

Hello team, I've been with spark people for a while, a few years actually. I found this team through a blog one of the team leaders spoke in. It was about Letting Go, and it resonated with me because that's exactly what I do and was trying to convince my siblings the value of that philosophy since they managed to estrange themselves to each other. I've gone through different life stages where these kinds of things were big issues. After holding on with all my might, I learned the truth about how much of it really matters and I let go. One for instance, was a particularly physical sensation and the release I felt showed me just how much I had invested my emotions into it. I decided then that being that intense about things that I had very little control over, was extremely debilitating and never meant to be in the grand scheme of things. That's right I grew older and wiser. As far as weight loss goes, I've done it all before, and was successful. Many years past and it slowly came back. Now I want to slowly take it off so that I won't really have any rebound effect. I'm trying to naturally grow into a normal body weight that I'll keep for the next 50 years on this planet. That's right I plan to be a 100 some day because I want to see what happens! emoticon

Hey! My name is Kerrie and I think I have the inability to lose weight. I have been overweight all my life and I'm ready for a change. I've tried for the past 5 or so years to lose weight. I would lose a few pounds to gain back double. This past year I started seeing a nutritionist and got rid of a few of my bad habits along with (almost) 30 lbs. And now it has slowed to a halt. No matter the exercise patterns, eating habits, or whatever, I'm stuck again.

I'm sure my story is similar enough to others, so any suggestions or support or help anyone can offer, I'd love it!!

First, be sure to use your trackers. You'd be surprised how easy it is to stay focused when you have to write your food intake down.

Also track your exercise. Start off slowly, then build up a little each day. Walking is fine, if that's all you want to do. Or use the gym equipment, but you don't have to compete with anyone but yourself. Don't pay attention to what anyone else is doing, just try to do a little more each day of what you chose to do.

If you really want to do this, you can. But YOU have to REALLY want to do it. emoticon emoticon

Hello. My name is Laura and I've been a SP member for about 3 years and have done nothing but gain weight, increase my BP and cholesterol and become more depressed. My doctor just increased my BP meds and told me I need to get serious about weight loss. I joined a gym but haven't gone. I've been having a love affair with food for about 15 years now and can't seem to stop eating-even when I'm full. emoticon

Hello all! I've belonged to SP since August and love it very much. This last month has been quite back and forth for me and I'm tired and discouraged. I was down to 243 and I'm now back to 246 and my food demons have really come out of the closet these past few days. I'm going to breath deeply and try to find my way again.

Hi BARHAAS,

emoticon to the group. I can't really answer the first question since I just joined on Nov. 14, except to say that I pray about it and leave it in God's hands.

I can answer the second question. For me, it was easy to show my weight to every one. SP is the most anonymous place there is to get help and encouragement for losing weight. I don't personally know any other Sparker, but even if I did, they would be in the same boat as me. I wouldn't expect anyone here to comment on my weight, just like I wouldn't comment on theirs.

But saying that, It is perfectly fine if you don't want anyone to know your weight. You don't ever have to tell anyone, or post pictures. That's what's so great about SP. You make your own rules.

As long as you use your Trackers and do the best you can, no one will ever ask any more of you. If you mess up, just start over. It's that easy!

But please remember that we are all here for you if you need any advice or encouragement.

Hi Everybody! This is my first post to this group. I joined SparkPeople on Sept 15th and have been SLOWLY losing weight which pleases me greatly. I think there are really benefits to taking it slowly, but I realize that it is going to take such a long time to reach my goal. How does everyone stick with it for the long haul? Also, I just cannot bring myself to share my actual weight and wonder how others have dealt with that? Are there forums about sharing "the biggest secret of all?"

sighhhh, I try not to get discouraged when my weight loss efforts don't show the results I am looking for, but sometimes it is really hard not to feel down or give up. I have to stop and remember that I am 63 now and much less active than I was when I was in my 40's. I also have to stop and remember that the scale is not always my friend and that there are other ways to measure my successes. Like feeling my clothes less tight on me, or having more energy or less gasping of breathe when I climb stairs. I also have to remember that I am living my life and that there will be times when I just can't be as rigid with myself and to not give up but get right back on track. That is where I am today - trying to remember the good and not dwell on the bad, or beat myself up. hugs to all, Cheryl

Hi all! I lost my last post, hope it doesn't turn up later, but Anyhoo...
Up and down is the way my weight has gone. I need to focus on the long term because it is so discouraging to be losing weight and putting it on again, not to mention bad for my health. I am developing a set of skills that will get me through the long haul, and have a feeling that this team will be great to have in my toolkit.

Hi Cathy,

emoticon to the group. Remember slow and steady wins the race, so just keep TRACKING and you'll do fine. I think if you can vary your exercises it may help to kick start a new losing streak. I've recently discovered that I shouldn't just ride my exercise bike at the same speed the whole time. I am supposed to do increments of speed riding (1 minute) and then slow down (3 minutes) to recover.

I joined this group because I want to lose the right way this time, and keep the weight off. In the past, I would lose a lot of weight quickly...but then put it and more right back on. At 61 yrs., I've got to stop the yo yo dieting. Well, I actually stopped it years ago, and have been gaining ever since.

I ran across SP while searching for anything that would help. My doctor told me the best 'cure' for Fibromyalgia was to lose weight and exercise. I know God put this web site in front of my eyes at the perfect time.

This time WILL be different. Too old to fool around anymore. Thanks in advance for all the help you will give me as I SUCCEED this time. emoticon

I am here with a lot of weight to lose. I know it will be a slow go because I have tried and tried with little success. Then 2 years ago I found out I have an underactive thyroid. I'm Amy, and I have a large amount of weight to lose. I like walking as my primary exercise but as I've gotten bigger, walking for any length of time is very hard for me to do. I'm trying to cut out most processed foods and eat closer to nature. The simpliar, the better.

I'm planning to hike the Appalachian Trail spring that is the meaning of my name. I'm 48. I was a member of SP years ago, but the minute I cut down the amount of exercising I was doing the weight came back.

Losing weight for me is 90 % unintentional and 10 % intentional. I don't have much of an appetite and I'm exercising more to get fit to do the six months of walking that I plan to do in the spring. I'm losing weight fast at the moment, but when I lost weight last time it was much slower.

I joined your group because you have team goals that I feel like doing or do already. I look forward to reading the posts and blogs of members. I hope that people will read mine.

New to this team. Been BACK on Spark for about a month now and am seeking spark friends who are active and motivated.

I am 31. Sometimes I feel 21, and sometimes I feel 51. I am working on feeling more like the former. I have an amazing fiance and combined we have 3 boys between that ages of 4 and 12. Looking to drop some weight for our wedding as well as to make it easier to sustain a healthy pregnancy after the wedding. We are looking to add to our family.

Hi. I'm new. I've been back on the "health-track" for about a month. Joined (rejoined?) sparkpeople a couple weeks ago, though. So, in a month of averaging 40 mins/day working out (elliptical, swim and/or long dog walks), eating less than 1500 calories/day (and tracking everything), I've lost... -2 pounds! (Yep, I gained 2.) Boo. Ah well, slow and steady, right?
