Hi, Lori!

Sorry for your loss, m'dear. It hurts to lose that support and companionship, I know... especially since it sounds like you have that "multiple medical issues" thing going on too, like a lot of us!

Things will get better. And your son is one joy you still have...

You're in good company...

emoticon It was such a delight and a privilege to have had Dawson for so long...
He was only a few months away from 16 yrs old when he died... pretty rare, actually, for large breeds. He was a black lab/German Shepherd mix, on the smaller side for the two...his average weight was 72 pounds... He was SUCH a sweetheart... and anyone who thinks animals don't have a sense of humor never spent time with a labrador retriever! LOL

My little ten pound male cat Licorice used to rub on him just because he knew it made Dawson nervous, but that dog simply adored Isis (my 11 pound female): she'd roll over on her back and he'd push her all over the floor with his nose, just like a furry grey dustmop! And she'd curl up next to him, and he'd let her push him out of his bed in her sleep... Still makes me laugh, thinking about it! LOL

If you're interested, there are a few pictures in my SparkPage Gallery... I wish I'd taken more of them now...

Hello,

My name is Lori, I am 43 (until April), I am disabled due to RA, Systemic Lupus and Fibro Myalgia. I have a 13 yr old son and am recently widowed. I live in WV. and plan to sell my house and move to OH. ASAP.

I have always had a problem with my weight since puberty. I never let it get 'out of hand' though until I was diagnosed with Lupus. I was put on Prednesone, which is a steroid, that caused me to gain 76 pounds in one year and made my sugar go up. After that, I slowly edged up the scale until I reached 300 pounds. I worked to get that down and have been able to keep it maintained between 280 - 290.

I got sick and ended up in the hospital for bronchitis and pneumonia and they put me on a strict diabetic diet. I was there for 3 days and paid attention to the portion sizes and what I could and could not have. I continued it after going home. I am now down to 270 pounds! It has been YEARS since I was 270!

I decided to keep it going and to utilize Sparkpeople to help me WIN this battle to a healthy weight and lifestyle. emoticon

My dogs are what have kept me from folding in on myself. I used to teach dog training which was great, and we even did canine musical freestyle (dancing) for several years till the fibro kicked in too hard. To this day when my dogs hear the music they've danced to they start trying to get me up. we still play around with it a little bit. And my youngest one (not very young at 9 years), has become my sweetheart of a dog. :D The old man sleeps as much or more than I do now (he's 13 1/2).

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

Kathy, I'm so sorry your service dog passed. Whenever we loose a fur baby it is tough. Many people don't understand how the loss is so hard, but to me they are my children. On my bad days I normally have a line up of fur- Andre on the pillow, Gary and Becky in the middle, then Victoria on my feet. It is wonderful to have their company and warmth!

I ordered a double decker stroller for when the weather gets better. The cats are terrified of outside, so they won't go. The rabbits love their trips to the pet store, so I'm going to try walking in the park with them. Being a double I can take all four buns at once to get my buns in better shape.

The last couple days have been high pain because it's been cold and wet. I'm hoping to get to the pool this weekend to try to move the best I can.

For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans for good, not evil. Plans to give you a hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

They do help, don't they!

My Service dog, Dawson, died last year and I haven't found a replacement. It's hard to find one around here, and you have to train your own a lot of times... but my two cats have kind of taken over for him. They do not walk with me (they are not allowed outdoors-- and they are too short to lean on anyway! LOL) but they DO let me know when I'm crashing, and are a great comfort when the pain levels get too crazy... nothing quite like a warm, breathing "vibrator" LOL My little male snores though... LOL

Welcome to the team, m'dear!

Hi Brandy! I am glad you are so kind and caring---animals have a good sense about people that way. I am afraid that I would never be able to stop by your house for a visit. My allergies would get the best of me. I can tolerate dog. Mine is a Maltese Toy Poodle mix.

Without my service girl Mara I know I'd be back in my power chair on massive pain medication. She is chunky but we walk a lot together. We are slow but each step is a plus for me, both health, weight and for my spirit. She is fast when not working next to me.She has almost an acre to run with all our other dogs. emoticon emoticon emoticon a total of 14 cats and dogs currently

Hi Brandi!

I find snuggling and petting my daughter's cat in the evenings to be very relaxing and it helps my muscles to unwind and reduce pain just before bed. Our dog is older so he and I take 15-20 minute walks 2-3 days a week and that's enough for both of us--more than that and we both get stiff and sore. So, our family pets are part of both my healthy lifestyle and fibro management!

Blessings,
Heidi

Hi Brandy, Welcome to the team. Animals can be a real aid into soothing us when we need it. A jokingly told my wife, "Wow, someone with more animals then us."
