You can either stagger the wheels or put two on the same side, whatever is more comfortable and functional for you. You may just have to play around with different set-ups and see what you like. I personally tried using a combination of two sets of wheels and didn't care for it, but I know many people do like the combination of roll and grip. Some girls even use three of one type of wheel and one of another on each skate.

Thank you so much for the info BTLSMUM!! I really want to find the right mix of wheels!! I think i would like a bit more grip on the inside turn around the track.....I have found if I'm going at a good speed I can't keep my turn tight. I think the wheels that are on the skates that I am using are 88. I have seen mixed wheels on some of the vets skates.....can they be staggered or is two of the same on one side recommended?

I really need to save up to get some good skates!! I want to get some custom boots, cuz i think my feet are differ in size quite a bit! I feel like i need more support on the sides too, (so I am now using an ankle/arch brace) and wheels that have some good control to um...... I have started an Amazon wish list.....you can find EVERYTHING there!! I'm going to send the link to my husband every other month! LOL!!

I play on polished concrete (arena) and practice on sealed concrete (warehouse). The warehouse venue is slick because it gets really dusty and dirty, otherwise it's ideal. I love it! Some of our girls wear a full set of super-grippy wheels such as Poisons or Sugars. I couldn't do it. LOL

For a slick surface, I generally do a 50/50 split of 2 grippy (think 88 or lower) and 2 92's (or above). Sometimes I'll just throw one grippy wheel on each skate. In our practice space I wear old, bald wheels because it's so gross in there. I will put my baldest wheel on my back right side for hockey stops.

It's just a matter of personal preference. The scale is just a loose guideline. I find that I love hard wheels. I like a bit of slide. I have skated on 97's quite a few times. It depends on the floor.

We do practice outside! I'm not sure how "slick" the concrete is....they said it was sealed, not polished but hell i don't know. We don't start practice till the 5th....if this dag blasted rain would stop I'd be out there on my lunch breaks! The park where we practice is only a couple miles from my job! I live in California, practice in San Luis Obispo. Usually the weather is not a problem, so i have been told.....but then again I've never trained outdoors (uncovered) for 4 hours in derby gear and skates before, hell not even indoors! haha!

Thanks for the responses ladies! :)

Hello fellow fresh meat! I just started a few months ago. And it's so much fun! I bet skating will come back really fast for you since you were a regular as a kid.

So does your league practice outside? That's kinda crazy! What part of the country are you in? Do you know how slippery the concrete is?

Hey there ladies!!

I'm starting fresh meat training on Jan 5th!! WOOT! LOL! Being 37 years old I am hella nervous but super excited!! I use to skate a a kid, I was pretty damn good. My brothers & cousins were at the rink so much the employees called us the "rink rats" and we were given jobs here and there. I was also on a speed team within the rink.....I really loved to skate! They tore down our rink when I was about 13 so that ended my love affair.

But now I'm back and ready to do something I have always wanted to do......I'm looking forward to any support, help, info and kicks in the arse y'all are willing to give me!!

YAY! :)

First question is...... what are your suggestions for outdoor sealed concrete rinks??
