How did you get into Roller Derby? My friend saw in the newspaper that there was a derby meet and greet at our local rink. She didn't want to go alone so I went with her. I thought I'd just get involved to skate for exercise, but something clicked and I really NEEDED to pass the assessment and get on a team. So glad I went for it. It's been a blast and I've made some really awesome friends. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd get into playing derby.
Five things you like: After parties, being drenched with sweat after a really good practice, my team, dark chocolate, flavored vodka.
Five things you dislike: Seafood, people who don't volunteer, monkey sprawls (four point fall drills,) willful ignorance, weird meat

How did you get into Roller Derby? Some of my mama friends started a league just north of where I lived, so I went to hang out with them. After much goading, they got me on skates. The rest was history!

How did you get into Roller Derby?: Purely accidently. I was looking up skate times for our local skating rink when the Omaha Rollergirls website popped up!
Five things you like (doesn't have to be Derby Related) 1. Racing any car that the owner will let me jump into 2. My family (includes boyfriend of 4 years, cat and dog) 3. Feeling of accomplishment after a really hard practice 4. Sewing, arts and crafts, creative things 5. Shopping
Five things you dislike 1. Mayonaise 2. Rude and inconsiderate people 3. Fake people 4. Toe stops falling off 5. Witnessing derby injuries
Best Roller Derby Moment (So Far...) I used to roller skate a lot when I was younger (10 -16 yrs old) Never anything like derby, just rolling around the track in junior high and high school with friends. I started playing roller derby at 27. After 11 years off skates and only 5 months of contact skating, I was asked to join our All Stars team. I am overweight, out of shape (to date), and have a lot of work to do mentally for this sport. To be invited to skate with the best in our league after such a short amount of time, is priceless to me.

How did you get into Roller Derby?: I always hated sports and exercise but after watching my first live bout, everything changed. I wanted to get fit so I could be one of those girls, and I did it! I failed 3 times but finally got into London Rollergirls fresh meat. I'm now in the Recreational League, and my next goal is to make it onto the C team.
Five things you like (doesn't have to be Derby Related): Roller Derby, Pugs, Tea, Chinese food, my partner
Five things you dislike: Mornings, Spiders, Dry Skin, running out of food, 'reality' shows
Best Roller Derby Moment (So Far...): Kamikaze Kitten (one of our A teams best Jammers, probably one of the best Jammers in Europe) was coaching us for skills practice. We split up into skill level groups, and she took me out of my group (which contained a few newer players) and put me into a group of vets, and said 'you should be with other more advanced players' - this was a huge boost to my confidence.

How did you get into Roller Derby?: I've rollerbladed since I was little. I saw Whip It in college and was like I could do that! I waited a few years til I had graduated because I thought I was too busy. I scoured the internet for the time in the town I had just moved to for my job. After I watched a few games I was hooked. Joined up during a bootcamp in August of 2012 and have loved/lived it ever since.

Best Roller Derby Moment (So Far...): Right after my first official bout with my team, I played in a mash-up game against some of my teammates. Knocking down our best blocker during one of the jams was one of the proudest moments I've had so far.

This time last year we went to a bout on a wild hare, by the end of the first game a friend was already signed up on chat boards and researching her skates. That friend joined the rec league but stopped after an slight injury. After the start of this season we agreed to go together. I showed up, she did not. Her loss.
AND my kids ran into a friend of theirs at that first game and found out she was on the junior team. It took a while to kit them out but my 2 girls skate with the jr. League. My little one just leveled up and can scrimmage with the team now, the other is still with the newbie pack, but shes not as physically inclined. They both love it.

How did you get into Roller Derby? I went to my first bout back in 2010 with my husband and a friend and fell instantly in love. Bought some skates on-line (mistake) and hit a local rink, realizing it had been around 25 years since the last time I roller skated. I started attending clinics with my local leagues and wound up joining one of their rec/training teams. My league had mid-season tryouts in 2012 and I MADE IT!

Introduce yourself to the group here! Hi there. Another one not new to SparkPeople, but new to derby and looking for anyway to get better while getting smaller and stronger. I've lost about 70lbs over the last year+ by training for a half marathon that was completed last February. I've also lived through a sprint triathlon and then decided to join derby to cap off 2012. I'm looking to lose about another 100lbs for vanity's sake - not sure where I'll end up though.

How did you get into Roller Derby? I'd seen things around town for a few years, but was really intimidated. My nail technician was talking about how she loved it and told me that bootcamp was starting in August and gave me the email to get in touch. One of my friends posted something on my facebook related to a derby boot camp and said that I should do it. How did you get into Roller Derby? I've loved it for a few years now but nothing too serious. Last year while pregnant I decided I would do it after I gave birth. I spent every day looking at derby stuff on the net to keep motivated. Six weeks after having my daughter (who is three months now) I joined a rec league. I bought my skates the day before I started so I was greener than green, last time I skated was inline in 2007, I hadn't skated on quads since I was 8 so 18 years ago! I'm still in phase one (out of three) but every week I see a huge improvement. I hope I'm bout ready by my high school reunion in November next year. That's not to say I'm not pushing myself now though :)

How did you get into Roller Derby? I worked with some women that were part of a league and thought it would be fun to get into. That was 2 years before I told my best friend that we should do it together. She started a year before I did ( took a while to save for skates and gear). So it was actually 3 years before I started. I've been part of the AZRG since March and I am loving every minute of it!

How did you get into Roller Derby? A friend of mine was telling me about two girls he knew that were playing roller derby in my town and how he thought that it seemed right up my alley. How did you get into Roller Derby? A knitting friend talked it up. Months later, husband and I watched "Whip It!". When the credits rolled, he turned to me and said "You should do that! You like hitting people!"

How did you get into Roller Derby? I read a newspaper article about our local team about a year ago and really wanted to try it, but then I found out I was pregnant, so I had to put it on hold. I had my son in September and went to my first practice last November. I've always loved skating and have never played a sport in my life, so I thought this would be a great chance to give it a shot. Plus, I have lots of baby weight to lose!
Five things you like (doesn't have to be Derby Related): Rollerskating, graphic design, dogs, Doctor Who, the Beatles
Five things you dislike: Comic Sans, toe stops (working on that one), Mondays, sushi, diamonds
Best Roller Derby Moment (So Far...): I'm not bout-ready yet, but the first time I got to really dig in on a team practice was exhilarating. This is the first time in my life I've felt like I could be good at a sport of any kind.
Personal Derby Quote/Mantra: If you don't try it, you'll always wonder what it would've been like.

How did you get into Roller Derby? About five years ago, I had been watching the A&E series "Rollergirls" with my roommate at the time, and when we heard a local league was holding a try-out session, we decided we were going to go for it. She wound up not showing up, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. Thankfully, they pretty much let anyone who wanted to join do so and didn't really test on skills, because I was atrocious. I could barely stand up on skates, let alone perform any of the skills.
Five things you like (doesn't have to be Derby Related): Besides roller derby: teaching, reading and learning about serial killers (and reading, period), word games (i.e., Words With Friends, Scrabble, etc.), TurboFire, and tea.
Five things you dislike: Balloons, people who don't cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, blisters/"ankle bites", baby powder, and meat.
Best Roller Derby Moment (So Far...): Definitely hoping the best is yet to come, but one memorable moment was knocking down the opponent's jammer in my first jam as a blocker.
Personal Derby Quote/Mantra: I guess there are a couple, depending on the particular situation, but it's important to remember to never give up, always push yourself to do better and more, and celebrate YOUR improvement rather than focusing on how much better someone/everyone else is.

How did you get into Roller Derby? I saw my local team (Birmingham Blitz Dames) on an episode of Embarrassing Bodies. They had their tops off and were being shown how to check for breast cancer. I managed to ignore the nipples(!) and said to myself "We have Roller Derby in Birmingham?!" I pottered along to the local training session and I haven't looked back.
Five things you like (doesn't have to be Derby Related) Roller Derby, Running, Baking, Norman Reedus, Studio Ghibli films
Five things you dislike: Vegemite (Marmite is awesome though), breaking a nail, DIRT(Mess is fine, dirt is GROSS), Country and Western Music, Being alone in a blackout after watching scary movies...
Best Roller Derby Moment (So Far...) Everytime I finally crack a skill when I thought I was NEVER going to get it.
Personal Derby Quote/Mantra: I have two:
1-"I'd have been better off taking up crack cocaine, because it's cheaper and far less addictive." SuperOxide said this to Izzy Dauntless. It's probably true, but I don't think Crack Cocaine is as much fun!
2-Even when you're down for the fourth time in a jam, even when your ribs are killing you, even when you've skated so fast you think you're going to puke, even when you want to cry with frustration, the best thing you can do, for you and your team, is to get up, and carry on skating.
