Hello, My name is Eddie from Houston Tx I'm 31 started to grow from seed a year ago. I have a thing for plants my wife calls me a old man, I just like to plant and grow anything from seed. I feel like its a challenge at times trying to get the seed to germinate to a seedling, to a mature plant. I agree at times I show the plants more love than I do my wife at times but I have corrected that already. Anywho, I love to grow anything from peppers to trees I have a few plants right now from last year, I will start to germinate soon to have a early start for next year. I grow superhot chili peppers things that you cannot find in houston or even much parts of the U.S. last year was a blow for me but this year I will do better and will stick to container growing instead of in the ground. Anyway hello all!

I have a small vegetable garden with 3 raised beds I have been working on for three years. I find gardening to be a stress reliever as well as a quiet space. I want to explore plantings in the front yard that include leafy vegetables. That is down the road.

Hi all; I love to garden and have been trying to set up a small veggie garden off my carport and add more color to the front garden. But I have to be careful as I am also an allergy sufferer.

Fall has my roses frozen stiff so I will not be out side in the dirt till at least April. But planning ahead is always good and I love tips and ideas. emoticon

Welcome. I too have a lot of health issues. I think sometimes my gardens are my therapy and my salvation. I live farther north - I think - I'll have to check out a map. It was -4 this morning. I've had my gardens cleaned out for a week or so but worked on them with my DH for several weeks before that. Can't say I've ever raised goats but I can imagine they keep you active!

Some of us have reached our weight goals but many of us are still working hard at it. Being here before, you know that we are all in this for the long haul. Be sure to set a new goal for yourself. Not just the overall one to lose X number of lbs. Make a lesser, more attainable goal at first to lose a portion of those lbs. and perhaps some exercise you want to start to help you lose the weight. Once you reach that goal, set another attainable one that will bring you closer to your main goal.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I joined SP in 2006 (and this group) and then again in 2008...and 2009. But with each illness and health condition I got, I *gained* MORE weight, so I stayed away until losing weight was possible again (it was too disheartening otherwise).

I'm a mom of 2 nearly grown boys, one still in HS, and one at Crane School of Music in Potsdam NY.

I live in upstate NY, and the gardening season is ...almost over. I'm cleaning for next year, planting things last minute and covering them with hay and straw ....from... our goat-pen -- we have 3 young male kids emoticon .

My housemate and I adopted Snicker and Doodle, brothers, in July and brought them home in August when the pen was ready. We adopted NutterButter soon after he was born--his birthday is May 31st, and we were looking for a companion for him while we were waiting for him to be ready to come home to us. Snicker and Doodle came from an animal rescue operation / shelter, and are the "big guys", born earlier in the year on March 17th. The three of them are my personal trainers emoticon emoticon

Hi to everyone here.

I got interested in gardening when I read Ruth Stout's book on mulching. Growing up, I hated weeding. I tried my first garden in Montana. Total flop.... too cold.

We live in town and have 13 hens, one duck, and one german shepherd. At least 5 different grape plants...and we don't live in Montana.

Our big crop this year was corn. We have eaten enough corn to grow ears. In our area, the price was high for locally grown corn. 3 ears for a $1. Hard to believe it was so expensive.

Hello all,
My name is Joy. My husband and I live on a small 5 acre farm in Michigan. We are both avid gardeners. We actually do farmers' markets in the area and plan on adding a roadside stand in a year or two. Right now we are planting our fall goodies, like bread poppies and garlic. I am already planning out our spring garden and dreaming of creating several new beds for perennials like rhubarb and asparagus.

yes welcome. I spent time in the garden today cutting back my Hostas and flower stocks on my Coral Bells. We've had a couple of frosts and they were getting wilted and messy looking. There are still some beautiful blooms in the garden - an annual that I've long forgotten the name of but must do some research on because it has been just wonderful, Brown Eyed Susans, Cosmos, Anemonies, and Mums, This annual was on sale very very early when the Pansies first came out and have been a constant bloomer since early May. Yeow - this is going to drive me nuts - I'll have to go thru the plant tags I kept and hopefully there was one for them. Aha, I have a picture of them that I will ;post on my SparkPage - if someone has time to look at it, perhaps you know the name. I will put a comment under the pic "What is this white flower?"

Hello, emoticon

I'm in my early 40's and I live in Western Canada. I love to garden but only have been doing it for 4 years now. I love growing whatever my heart desires. Flowers are my favourite to grow and finding native plants that grow naturally here... are fun to add as well.

My vegetable garden is growing a lot better now since I added the necessary nutrients. I grew this year:

*Carrots
*Zucchini
*Beets
*Butternut Squash
*Peas
*Green Onions
*Lettuce
*Chives
*Greenhouse Tomatoes
*Radishes

Hi - I'm Stacy and live in rural Kansas where I have four acres to play with. Grew up with two women - mom and grandma - who were champion gardeners so I spent my childhood weeding and hating it!! Now I've discovered what they saw in it - other than fresh tomatoes and apples!! I plan to retire in four months - yes the middle of January - so not much gardening going on, but I'm already laying plans for spring. Glad I found this team!

And does anyone know the best mulch for asparagus??

Thank you for this "introduction portal"... what a clever idea. My gardening is limited to a tiny patio in the city with three terroirs: dirt, cement, and synthetic decking. My other hobby is dieting. I think I've found the right team!

Patsu - nice garden pics on your SparkPage. I too have posted pics of my gardens. Where do you find the energy to do all the things you do! Although, at one time, I too was a very busy woman, lol. It was such a shock to the system when I was forced to slow down and even now I get all fired up to do things but have no energy to carry through. Keep at it as long as you can and make the most of it.

I'm Patti and besides being an avid gardener, I am a fourth grade teacher, certified life coach, professional clown, hobby photographer, world traveler, scrap booker, and aspiring writer. I am almost "done" with my Zen garden. (Really, are we gardeners ever "done" with a garden? LOL)

Please check out my spark page--I've got some nice pics of my garden. Also, my latest blog is about a garden party I recently attended.

After I finish my next master's degree in education, I plan to begin the process to become a master gardener.

Hello, my name is Sam, I'm from the UK and I've only being gardening as a hobby since the beginning of this year. I never knew how enjoyable it was until I started volunteering at a community farm. I grow Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprout and runner beans in my garden's vegetable plot. I have also started growing Coriander and Basil. I also grow Cayenne pepper plants in my house.

Sorry I'm not very good on introduction posts.

thanks for all the welcomes! Today, I indulged my other love (other than food) and went to 2 different plant nurseries! I was able to find a lily I've been wanting - the Ruby Stella dwarf Day Lily.
emoticon
While there, I learned that there is one I still don't have in the Stella series called Stella Supreme. I was driving home past yet another nursery and I swear my car just turned on it's own into the lot and low and behold, they had 1 Stella Supreme! On the way to the check-out, I passed a 25% off table with a Coral Bells I don't have - Cinnabar Silver - of course I bought that too, lol.
emoticon
When I came home, I took pics and posted them on a Facebook site called Plants for Peterborough Canada (local group) and found a message from a fellow gardener that they had found a nursery with a particular house plant I have been searching for - A Burrow's Tale. Yet another nursery! Guess where I'm headed after checking my messages on here. Let's hope I have the will power to just get the house plant , that I won't go into a 4th nursery located 2 mins drive from this one, and that I don't give into my craving on the way home for a Slushy on this hot humid day (29 with humidex making it feel like 40)!

Hi: I just joined the Team. I live in Peterborough, ON, Canada, where it is said we have 2 seasons - winter and road work. Actually we have a fairly long growing season from early to mid May to mid Oct. usually. I have 7 perennial beds, the world's smallest veggie garden, and numerous planters. My husband is a tremendous help in the garden - and thank heavens for that because when we got married 11 years ago and he put all the gardens in that I wanted, I got really ill and he had to take over. With time I have recovered somewhat but will never again be able to handle them all on my own. Every fall I dig up approx. 100 plant pieces, pot them, and plant the pots in the garden for the winter where they will stay until spring when I hold an annual perennial plant sale. The money from this allows me to get as many annuals as I want to beef up the colour in the perennial beds, buy mulch and such. I belong to Facebook and belong to a group on Facebook called "Plants for Peterborough Canada" where local gardeners have a forum to share their pictures, ask questions, offer advice, etc. Recently we've even some of us gotten together for a seed swap (missed that one) and later a plant swap. More are planned. We often share and trade plants but no soliciting or selling is permitted on the site which is nice. I have some pics of my gardens in my SparkPage photos. I look forward to meeting some fellow gardeners also committed to healthy living and losing weight.

Florida is a challenge to garden and none of the garden magazines except our state one really focuses on growing here. When they are saying plant your seeds, it's time for us to be harvesting and then come early September we start planting.

I think one reason you don't see as many flowers here part of the population leaves during the summer then also so many people have lawn crews. They don't want you to have anything extra, just grass and the few plants that they are familiar with and that they can hack a branch off quickly

HELLO AND emoticon TO THE TEAM. GUESS IT IS KIND OF HARD IN REAL HOT CLIMATES TO GARDEN. I HAVE BEEN TO FLORIDA A FEW TIMES AND THAT IS THE ONE THING I NOTICED, THAT THERE WERE NOT MANY FLOWERS, THIS HAS BEEN A CRAZY CLIMATE UP HERE IN QUEBEC CANADA TOO. A LOT OF THE FLOWERS ARE ROTTING DUE TO SO MUCH RAIN, OH WELL GUESS WE CAN'T HAVE EVERYTHING.

New here. I am a gardener in FL. I mostly garden for butterflies and wildlife but also have many other plants. I grow herbs and some vegetables but it's so hard in this climate especially if you are trying not to use pesticides

Hi, I live in Halton Hills Ontario and am a passionate gardener. I am a master gardener-in-training and have a large, 2 year old perennial garden on a country property. I have gardened all my life and am interested in chemical-free, pollinator-friendly approaches to flower gardening.

I'm Gail from southern Ontario, Canada. I'm retired and gardening, along with travel and volunteering are my main hobbies. My garden is relatively new, we built our house 10 years ago. I have mostly shrubs and perennials (hostas, peonies, astilbe and clematis are among my favourites), with lots of containers and annuals for colour.

Hi all,
I live in Ohio, have smallish but varied vegetable garden, a gorgeous rose bush, and a lawn that is out of control with weeds. Saw some of you discussing mint as groundcover. It grows to fast and spreads too aggressively here to work for me. I love flowers and vegetables and my ideal garden would be planted with both - so full and close together that it would need very little weeding.

I live in Indiana and my tomatoes are going crazy now. I'm very happy with my garden this year, we've had some nice rain showers and humidity. The pumpkins are starting to take off and the herbs smell wonderful

I live in Southeastern Michigan and recently have become very interested in native plants. I find that days I spend in the garden, the steps I take practically triple! I am committed to this program for the rest of my life! Thanks!

I started water aerobics 2 weeks before starting sparkpeople, so the swimmer is a good icon for me. My zodiac sign is also water, so seeing the water image is a good motivator for me.

Hi! I live in western Maryland and love to grow all kinds of flowers and perennials. We have too much shade to do much with veggies. Goal this year is a new bed of Day Lilies. I do a lot with potted containers around our house and business also. Gardening is relaxing. Just love the smell of dirt after a day of work! emoticon

Nancy I'm so over trying to grow grass, I'm fine with the clover that showed up but isn't chocking out all the horrible sticker, pricker weeds. We have at least an acre and there is noway I'm bringing in dirt and sod. Heck we couldn't afford the good stuff when we built the house 9 years ago and business hadn't dropped 50% yet:-)

HI JEN AND emoticon TO THE TEAM, YOU ARE RIGHT THE MINT WOULD SMELL LOVELY BUT REMEMBER SO VARIETIES ARE VERY INVASIVE, BUT THE SMELL IS WELL WORTH IT

MICHELLE IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WHEN I WAS AT THE HOUSE, SEEMS NO MATTER WHAT MY HUBBY AND I WOULD DO NOTHING SEEMED TO WORK, WE FINALLY HAD 5 INCHES IF DIRT/CLAY REMOVED AND NEW EARTH BROUGHT IN, THAT HELPED BUT IT WAS COSTLY

My name is Jen and I'm so excited to be a part of this team! I've been a Sparker for quite a while, but recently decided to become active on my teams and get a little more support.

My garden is primarily vegetables and fruit trees, with some potted herbs on my back deck. I'm trying to get more involved with our landscaping but my husband tends to guard that jealously. (It's a power tool thing, I'm betting. ;) )

I love the mint idea! I need some ground cover for a shady spot in my back yard. It's in the process of becoming an outdoor reading spot, and the mint would smell so pretty.

Nancy weeds and dirt are mostly what our yard has become. It's to the point as long as its green we are OK with it! In the backyard it is dirt right along the back porch. We have planted sod twice, seed twice and nothing remains. Right now I spread hay over the dirt so the dogs don't bring in so much dirt and mud. It works fine and the chickens like it too, we even have rows of Pacers extending from the porch. So we thought something unconventional might do the trick. The mint was in a planter but creeped along the dirt and was too hard to cut, unlike my other mint plants. So invasive mint could be what we are looking for!

Welcome Diana! Your flowerbeds sound lovely! I'm in central Fl where it's a wet time of year. I struggle to grow food but have picked a few Roma tomatoes. Herbs grow well for use but we want to grow veggie! I never thought of herbs as a ground cover but just put a low growing mint that was too hard to harvest in a dirt patch to see what happens! Good luck and glad to meet you:-)

Hi fellow gardeners!
What a cool team! I'm so glad to be a member.
I live in N Central Texas, west of Fort Worth, where conditions are fairly dry. We're still in drought conditions and a burn ban is in effect for our county. We live on 6 acres in the country, and it's very peaceful. I have several beds and a grassy area surrounding our house, although the rest is just au naturelle. We don't have livestock, except the occasional deer and coyote.

I planted knock-out roses, a couple low growing rosemary, flanked by some red yucca in a bed that gets full sun. The roses are huge and in full bloom, the rosemary is going everywhere, but one of the red yucca doesn't seem to be doing as well as the other. It hasn't bloomed yet. I know they bloom all summer and into the late fall (which in our area is November), but I don't know if there a possibility that the one that hasn't bloomed yet still might.

Anyone with any knowledge about this is welcome to comment.

Thanks so much,
Diana Sterrett

Hi , I go by starfish, I love having a garden and so far they have been pretty abundant over the years. Will be planting soon , so if we run across a problem it is assuring to know I have a place to inquire about it. I also have lots of house plants , one of them is the asparagus fern , had it for several years,
When thinning this plant should I just cut it all back & and how much should I leave , 4 or 5 inches or more ?
Look forward to posting with all of you green thumbs emoticon

HI BETH ... I LOVE DAYLILIES ALSO ... I DON'T HAVE AS MANY AS YOU , BUT I DO HAVE 12 DIFFERENT ONES. I THINK I HAVE IDENTIFIED ALL BUT ONE. I KNOW THE ONES I'VE PURCHASED, BUT SOME OF MY HAND-ME-DOWNS REMAIN NAMELESS! I TAKE PICTURES WHEN THEY ARE IN BLOOM THEN GOGGLE THEM TO SEE IF I CAN FIND A MATCH. HOPEFULLY THIS YEAR I WILL HAVE THEM ALL NAMED.

Hi, my name is Sherry and my husband and I love getting out in the dirt and making things grow. We have a desert garden. The winter was very cold and brought lots of snow this year. So excited that it's finally warming up. Spent 3 hours pulling weeds yesterday. The tumbleweeds are already coming up, and several trees need to be replaced. We have lots of work to do. Good news is our Sage bushes have a beautiful gray green color to them now, and several of our Columbines and Iris's already have blooms! Looking forward to this growing season.

Thanks Nancy I finally saw her reply after I thinned out my Boston ferns! Basically the same info over watering. I wrote a blog with pictures of the plant which is in a pot with three other pothos doing fine. So maybe shock or who knows what is the cause! I was thinking the time release fertilizer maybe a problem as I've never used those before.

Hello! My name is Carole and a quite an amateur when it comes to gardening. I moved to North Carolina and love having lots of yard space to plant pretty much anything. Today I planted marigold and zinnia seeds. Also planted petunia and snapdragon plants. My husband, who loves yard work, has been planting vegetable seeds. Should see his face. Looks like a little boy with a new toy. lol! We're hoping all turn out well with our efforts. I have confidence that I'll receive great advice from team members here.

Ugh, I haven't heard anything and have pulled 10 yellow leaves off my pothos! Moved the other plants to darker areas and am hoping for the best!

Help with the garden room plant conditions
Boston ferns loose lots of dry leaves
Peace lily getting black on older leaves, pothos turning yellow, spider plant turning brown, polka dot plant dropping leaves. Some were replanted so can that cause a turn in health? Ferns and lily are in original pots.
