Hi, I live in Southwestern Wisconsin and I'm new to Sparkpeople. Gardening is one of my very favorite things to do; when my daughters were little we lived in the country and had an enormous organic vegetable garden - we moved when my youngest was 5 and I became a flower gardener because we had no room for a vegetable garden. My husband and I moved to a small apartment after living in a big old Victorian house for 16 years; it was difficult but the thing that makes it great is that I am able to have a large vegetable garden!!! This is our second year here and I love going out and checking the garden every morning to see how things are coming along. I work out in the garden every day for at least a half hour. This year I've planted sugar snap peas, carrots, globe zucchini, patty pan squash, acorn squash, lots of tomatoes, several types of peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bush beans, pie pumpkins, spinach, butternut squash, tomatillos and several herbs.

Also, at 57 years old I am finally off to college! I will be pursuing my Horticulture degree, starting with an associate degree in Landscape Horticulture at our local tech college.

I need to lose about 60 pounds and I'm happy to be here!

Hello, my friends call me roni. I love gardening with beautiful color. I even like mowing the lawn. Being out doors is my favorite pass time. I even have my 6 yr old grandson out side digging, planting along beside me. He is amazed with our creations. And loves to watch them grow. When he was 4 he dumpped a box of miragold seeds in a bed they where the most beautiful flowers we grew that year. Thank you for having me. Roni

Hi, I am Ashanti and I cannot say that I love Gardening but I do like to see my yard look pretty. My skills and yard are a work in progress. This is my 3rd year and hopefully will be better than last and the year before that.

The only problem is I give up or get too tired half way through the process. My garden starts out beautiful but by the end of summer, they are weeds :o) Hoping the more I stay at it, the better it will be.

Hi! My name is Jolene and love to garden. My husband and I have a vegetable garden, he does most of the work while I am at work (he works 3rd shift) but we both take care of it and harvest. I am starting several flower bed gardens as well this Summer. Next year I hope to have a butterfly garden, we will see. I have found the heavier I got the more frustrating it is not able to do as much in the yard...weight and a bad knee. I am hoping with losing the weight I will be able to do some of the things I love so in life.

CROWEMOMMA Here's some very general Herb advice: (Love giving advice!!)

1. Think about which herbs you like to use in cooking & try to grow some of those.
2. Find out which herbs grow well in your area and see if you like some of those. Soil conditions to consider would be acid/alkaline, fast or slow draining. Ambient conditions to consider would be temperature, sunlight, rainfall, wind and all that.
3. Seeds are cheaper but ready bought plants give quicker results, and one or two plants of any one herb will probably do. Some herbs are annuals and some just keep going year on year.
4. Water the hole well before you dig plants in, and keep watered until established.
5. If you try any kind of mint, plant it in a container or it'll take over everything!!!

Good Morning! I am going to work in my yard this weekend! I live in PA and we just had a terrible windstorm last weekend that destroyed a trellis I had with a 5 year old climatus..and some climbing roses. I sadly had to cut the climatus @ the base to get the broken in half trellis out. I am HOPING it bounces back!!

Hi,

I live north of Montreal and have a big back yard I would love to use as an organic vegetable garden. I need help in planning: greenhouse or not, easy to maintain garden without too much bending, where to find organic seeds, how to make compost, etc. I am new on this site and I have a hard time finding what I want. Can someone direct me?

My goal is to be healthy with a raw living food diet. Tracking calories is very important when a change in diet lifestyle is made, to make shure we get all the calories we need. Sparkpeople.com is amazing.

Thanks for your help.

No Worries! Glad to find out about those easy maintenance, long season roses! I'm guessing they have petals that fall naturally after blooming(rather than turning to mush on the stem). That's my kind of rose, JJJ510! Tell me more please, like who is the supplier? Do they have a website?

Hello from the UK. Very interested in roses but not sure what knock roses are? I'd love to find out. Blooming profusely all summer sounds wonderful!

At present I'm working on a shelter belt to protect my garden from wind. I'm looking forward to when that's established and I'm able to plant more delicate stuff. I'd like some more roses!

Hello from the eastern shore of Maryland. I can't wait to start gardening. I was reading below, and some of you were talking about roses, my knock roses did the best for me, bloomed profusely all summer. I'd like to get a few white roses this spring.

Have a nice day

Hi Liba, here is some stuff of a website about the ZD rose. "This is one of the classic roses, introduced in 1868 and cherished for generations for its lavish and unsophisticated flower display, and its ease of cultivation, not least the thornless stems which make pruning a pleasure. If trained on a house wall mildew can be a problem where air cannot circulate, and it is better grown on a pillar, arch or pergola, and can even be pruned as a large shrub."

With all your roses. Liba, you must have blooms all year on one or other of your rose bushes. Sounds wonderful!

Betty's rose that changes colour must provide floral interest all summer! That sounds better than a "blue" rose really. The blue ones never really turn out to be a good blue in any case. Or maybe you know of a really good blue rose? Do let me know if so!

HI Liba and Betty
Me too with the roses! Love the way they get better year by year if you look after them. I only have rosa glauca in at the moment, which is an almost wild rose, but plan to get "Zepherine Drouhin" in soon as it has no thorns and is a good shade of solid mid pink, plus perfume, which I really like. But I'm wonderin what it will be like in really windy conditions?

I do love roses too!! Tropicana is my favorite at the moment! Last year my boys (2 beagles) gave me 2 dark purple roses, however 1 turned out to be lavender, the other (you'll never believe this one) started out as yellow & orange buds & as they opened they were pinkish/white to red/white. Took lots of pic's I have never seen anything like that in my 34/35 years of gardening. Have you?? Have a great week!

Hi Everyone
I joined Spark People a couple of weeks ago and have lost a couple of pounds so far, so am delighted, but it's mainly cholesterol I'm worried about, so plenty to read about that on the Spark pages!

I love gardening and here in the UK our summers are just about hot enough for tomatoes, for instance. But our house is on a windy cliff top and the soil is dry and very chalky. The cliffs here are an extension of the white cliffs of Dover. Whatever grows well at all here will grow like a weed, but I've never had so much gardening fun or so many surprises. For instance Turkey figs grow very well here, and beetroot, and all sorts of herbs. Does anybody out there have a similar garden? I would like very much to hear from them if they do.

Hello Team,

I'm Chana from Northern California. In my efforts to be more active on my teams, here I am. I've pasted my blog entry from yesterday.

Perfect Day to Garden. It rained last night (YAY!!) it was mild and mostly overcast but about 64 degrees. My best gardening buddy came over to finish off what I had begun yesterday - Care and Maintenance of the front garden... the Mediterranean Garden.

We cut back tons of salvia, pruned roses, reshaped succulent pots, thinned some of the citrus trees and moved a few lavendars. The smells were intoxicating... the brush of the rosemary, followed by the sent of the lavendar then the hint of the citrus blooms. Citrus here is everblooming, so there are always buds and fruit.

The ground was soft and easy and it was a perfect day to get rid of weeds. I looked across at SF Bay and could see boats going by. It was cloudy, but clear over the bay. The harder I worked the better I felt so by the time my friend and I were done, all the uneasiness I had been carrying, including the headache was gone. The truth of the matter is this is how I relieve the ever present thought of my mother's cancer diagnosis. She is doing well, and I am better.

We came into the house 3 hours later where I had been roasting a chicken and we shared it with a huge salad. We were greasin'!!! YUM!!

So, a little physical labor, a love of nature and the help of a friend, pulled me right out of my doldrums.

I look forward to work (corporate) tomorrow as I will have balance. Now for a sound workout... Here I come Chalene!!

Onward...

Chana

Spark Baby!

I know how you feel. I moved to Dallas from a 3 bdrm house in NJ. I had flowers of all kinds in a few different flower beds from front to back. But here in my 1 bdrm I am enjoying container gardening on my fairly spacious patio.

Hi,
I am new to all of this, but I do a flower pot gardening. I have no green house so, Iam limited on what I can plant. The only plant that does well for me is peas and carrots. My pansy come up every year and do really good. Right now I have to much snow on the ground to plant. I started plants inside, but they grow to fast and hardly have any leaves.
Know that we are getting more light Iam getting resllis

Hello everyone.
I'm new here. I am looking forward to spring. We moved from a 6 bedroom home into a 1 bedroom condo. Most everything we own is in storage. I am sad to leave my gardens behind, but do look forward to some container gardening and a very small little plot. Mostly flowers, herbs and a tomato plant. I am thinking of growing some zucchini in the small plot, since it is covered in small rocks. I believe they are hardy enough to grow and even thrive there... We'll see. I look forward to being part of this group.
Namaste,
Leesa
