Hi Everyone, I have been a member of SP for a few months, I love gardening because I love watching my own organic veggies grow, I have planted an organic garden ever since I can remember, I remember my grandfather helping me with the tilling of my first garden when I was 5 years old, and the rest is history. I am a mother of 4 grown men, and I have others that have adopted me as "mom" over the years, and they also like helping grow the veggies in my gardens. The garden veggies taste MUCH BETTER than the veggies you buy in the store in my opinion.

I love gardening - but along with my weight- things have gotten "out of hand". I'm spending this summer getting my body and my yard back into shape!

Diana, You and I are around the same weight, the only difference is that I am short, from your pic you look a lot taller. I am 5"1 and hopefully can now take off the weight that I need to.

Hello, fellow gardeners! I love gardening (as well as anything involving landscaping & working in the outdoors). I just planted a raspberry patch with deer fence, fresh herbs & flowers around the house. Just getting outside improves my mood & gives me hope for losing the weight that I'v slowly put on over the past 15 yrs. Wish me luck!

Hello everyone! I am back on sparkpeople after some time of not being on.

Gardening is a hobby for me, I am not all that great at it. My sucesses seem to be in growing herbs. I also enjoy the fruits such as blueberries and rasberries, strawberries haven't been cooperative.

Anyway gardening and weeding and digging in the dirt are all therepy for me.

Glad to be back and let's all enjoy the rewards of our labor in gardening.... or in my case my labors in addition to others that have more than enough produce and like to share.

Hi. High desert gardener in northern New Mexico. we battle many late season frosts and have May 1st to October 1st to put it all in and get it all out without cover. I haven;t worked the soil this year but did just get a new tiler. This is my third in 18 years - seems like a lot.
I like to grow specialty heirloom tomatoes from an organic nursery stock in santa Fe. I put in broccoli, cauliflower, edible peas, and green mix lettuces. I want to put in a lot of fava beans. they are great and produce into October!!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

do it now/ do it until its done.

success through commitment

love is dedication

Hello everyone,

I am trying out gardening again this year. Last year I tried for the first time and all I grew was basil. So this year, I am hoping for lots of herbs and veggies. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

We did have a frost. All my magnolia blossoms got black and ugly. I don't know why my magnolia bloomed before others in the area. I looked around today and there are magnolias blooming everywhere. What a bad break!

well everyone have a good weekend..we might get rain and a storm on Monday in the Northeast here in New York..but we really cannot complain..I'm going to buy a new statue of an Angel..

Hello Precioustime. Gardening has always been my refuge. From worry and from stress. i lost my wonderful husband to cancer 13 years ago, when i had teenagers to teach to drive and look for colleges. My garden was my solitude time. I have a poem that I have always loved.

"The Kiss of the Sun for pardon
The Song of the birds for mirth
One is nearer God's heart in a
Garden than any place else on Earth..."

Think about it while you're pulling weeks and tending your flowers. It's always helped me.
I also live in NY. Upstate. And our weather has been marvelous so far this spring. I love it. And so do the weeds, so I'm tackling them a little every day.

Welcome, Slimchances. Me too, i hope.
I answered a question about potting mixes a week or so ago, and since then I've been thinking about it. I'm not changing my mind about the sand bit. That was right. But now i think I would like to change my answer. The three parts are peat moss, sand and vermiculite. I think it's an entirely soil-less mixture. Sorry if I misled anyone.
I've been looking at my dahlias. They are ready to wake up and start growing. And Rochester NY winter or not, I'm ready to go.

Hello to all here, good morning to all of you now in your country and good evening to me here in the Philipines.

My name is Cresen Filipina living in the Philippines right this moment. I am BS Horticulturist graduate and we have a little farm 2.2 acres. We have greenhouse for lettuce and we eat and sell our vegetables too. Right this moment we are building a second greenhouse we are going to plant them more lettuce and tomato because we are short of supply to our costumers.

We have orchards, vegetables growing in the soil as well as fruits, and coconuts/the tree of life we called it. We also have sheep. It makes my life busy here every day. Planting and harvesting is to me make my life happy every day and its a normal thing in my life.

I told myself this spring that starting a raised bed vegetable garden would encourage me to eat healthier: Tomatos, green bell peppers, parlsey, beets, carrots & bush green beans!
My salads and homemade salsa tastes better made fresh, dealing with cusp weight 200 - 190 is becoming easier every day.

Responsibly broke down garden to half speed this morning, in respect of impending Hurricane here in Massachusetts. Removed all stakes and netting that may be swept up and blow away tomorrow. Peppers and tomatos still have flowers for September fruit!

Hello Everyone!
My name is Mandy. My husband and I have a little garden in our back yard. It has tomatoes, crook neck squash, cucumbers, bell peppers, cayenne peppers, habanero peppers, jalapeno peppers, corn, and ornamental gourds. We are also attempting Big Max pumpkins this year. I have never grown pumpkins before. If anyone has suggestions to a bountiful crop, I would really appreciate the tips! We live in Upstate South Carolina. We love growing and canning our own food! I look forward to learning from all of you!

Hi! We are in Central Colorado and don't do as much gardening as we'd like. I am hoping to learn more here. We do grow garlic, Jeruselum artichokes, and horseradish as well as strawberries and cherries. So far the birds have eaten all the cherries and strawberries before we did. Still working on that. :)

Hi,everyone!
Gardening enthusiast here, in Ontario,Canada. In our new house, have lots of shrubs, and some perennials in so far. It is an ongoing project. I design and point and my hubby digs. System works well.
Have a veggie garden for the first time. It is fun to "go get the groceries" at mealtime! Have planted various lettuces, spinach,Swiss Chard, chives, radishes, tomatoes, snap peas, pole beans, carrots, yellow beets, red beets, lots of basal, parsley. Only the lettuce and chives, basal, parsley, chard ready at this time but everything is growing great guns. July and August are the big harvest times here.

Best of luck to all of you as you develop green thumbs. By the way,to newbies, gardening is addictive, which is a good thing.

The black sheet will work. Just don't get to many extra holes in it and the weeds won't poke through. You can also used old roof shingles. The weeds stay out as long as you over lap the shingles. I bought some damaged ones from a hardware store. They were going to throw them away because some tiles broke. You can also put rock on top of the shingles to add a little attraction.

Hi everyone, I live in Western NY and I do not love gardening! So I joined this team because I need lots of help and advice from fellow gardeners in WNY. I am being taken over by weeds, bushes, and critters who make holes of all sizes in my raised lawn. The rain and illness over the past two months made it impossible for me to get much work done, my next door nieghbors helped me out with the mowing. The rain is finally ended and my sinuses are hopefully over whatever it is they have been going through, so I need to get started.

I need advice about weed cloth. I bought long sheets of black plastic to lay down, will this kill everything under it (that is my goal) and how long will it take?

Hello everyone! I am from Florida. I live in a townhouse, no fence and I do have a big yard. Currently growing eggplant, cucumber, bell pepper, herbs, blackberries and fig tree in home depot orange buckets as containers. I stole that idea from a friend and its cheap and just as good as a decorated container. I hope to have veggies in the next 30 days.

Happy gardening!

Hi! I live in south central KY, on a 10 acre hillside farm. We have a woods, creek, and 2 pastures, with a great view from the house of the surrounding countryside. We have 3 horses, a donkey, 14 chickens (so far), 4 dogs, 2 cats, and a macaw. I had never done any sort of gardening, other than aloe plants in FL, until we moved here 3 yrs ago.

This year is my 3rd garden, and the largest - 14' x 27'. The onions, broccoli, cantaloupes, radishes, peas, potatoes, & beans are growing great. Herbs & corn, not showing yet. Can't figure that one out. Its been the same thing every year with these.

Anyway, glad to be here, and looking forward to meeting y'all!

Hi, my name is Sheila and I am very new to gardening - this summer is my first time really trying to grow anything - I have been known to kill cacti. We have planted a container garden as we lost 6 pine trees in this last winter storm and all of a sudden my yard get sunlight!

I have 6 barrels, 2 large hanging bags with 3 plants each, 1 small hanging cherry tomato and a huge while tower with cutouts for my herb and leafy greens. Everything is growing quite nicely. The white tower was designed by a local man and it has a central worm composter - so far it is doing very well. I have even eaten a salad from it.

I am 47 and I have had weight issues since I was 12 - I don't think i have ever been at goal weight or if I am it doesn't last very long at all. I am focusing on whole foods for this and hense my desire to plant my own garden this summer.

I must say I had to laugh after reading the directions thread at how many people can't follow directions and not post there so I hope this is in the correct place.

What part of CA? I'll be moving back to Kern Co. mountains in Sept. Anywhere close? My grandkids say the only reason I garden is because it gives me excuse to play in the dirt! They like my tomatoes tho!

Hello!!! My name is Christina. I am new to the group. I just started gardening. I am so proud of the little sprouts that are growing so far. It makes me feel like a mother all over again. The flowers are my babies. I hope to learn new ideas and tips from this group being that I don't think I developed a green thumb yet. It is more like a green pinky. emoticon

I have a small bulb garden and a decent size fruit and vegetable garden with tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkin, water melon, lettuce and onions. We are also trying to get an orchard going but are in the test phase looking at different varieties of apples and pears.

For me gardening is the best way to relive stress. Something about having my hands in the dirt makes me feel happy.

Greetings fellow lovers of digging in the dirt! I have been "Sparking" since January and am just now finding this team. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but you might want to take a look at a website for biointensive gardening at www.growbiointensive.org - This is a new discovery for me and they even have videos to help explain how to get the very most out of your garden while improving your soil dramatically! All the best and happy seeding! I'm off to strt my lettuce and peas today...

Hello gardeners...My name is Lisa and I have been gardening for about 20years! Where does the time go? This year I am changing my 30' x 38' garden from the traditional row garden to a square foot garden. I cannot wait to get started. If only the snow would stop falling:( I have begun an indoor herb garden and also starting seeds indoors. I truly hope I do not kill the plants.

Hi! I'm Laura. I live in Florida so we are blessed to be able to garden year round here! :) I started with flowers about 4 years ago and found that I do have a green thumb! Last season was my first with food. I went a little overboard and bought too many tomato plants... lol - we had A LOT of sauces and salsas! This year I'm going to try a raised garden. (I have dogs, so I need something they can't get into) If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears! :) THANKS!

Hi,

People call me Lydie. I live in northern Minnesota so the long winters make it hard to garden at this time of the year. I used to think I'd kill all plants but last winter I decided I couldn't handle another winter without seeing green plants, so I gave it a try. I realized I can keep some plants alive and the gardening bug hit. I mostly do indoor gardening but this spring I am going to try outdoor gardening. We moved to a new home and have a great yard for it.

Any suggestions let please let me know.

Hi,
I'm Julie. Live in central VA which is wonderful for growing. Have a nice size yard but the layout is somewhat peculiar which maked my planning hard. I love roses, lilacs (hard to grow here) peony's, lilies of the valley, flowering plants & trees. I have a memory garden. It has plants that remind me of friends & family or were given to by by friends & family. Lilacs for my grandmother, peonys for mom, roses and rose of sharon for my father, lilies of the valleys for 2 great cousins, a friend Kim gave me Camellias from her garden, hydrangeas remind me of my best friend Marie's garden. That is the favorite section of garden!! emoticon

Hello. I live in the hot desert of AZ, where even growing grass is an accomplishment. I have about 15 houseplants, that are doing much better now that the air conditioning is off and I can let the sunshine in. I have one hanging plant, I can't remember the name, but it's succulent and it makes these branches with horizontal leaves. The branches go up and down like an elephant's trunk, so I call it the elephant. I've made a couple of plants from the branches.

Now with winter coming, which is our growing season in the desert, I started zucchini seeds in a huge pot that I had. The seeds are starting to sprout. I have rosemary in another pot, which is more like a bush. I love the smell of rosemary. I'm hoping to start some tomatoes too.

I envy those of you who are growing and canning your vegetables. When I lived in CT, I had more vegetables that I could handle, so I would can in order to enjoy them in the winter.

I enjoyed all of your stories and it sounds like we have all corners of the country covered. It should make for interesting conversation.

Maryann

Hi I am Deborah. I live in Pflugerville, Tx with my sister and our children. I left a place I was renting because the landlord was selling the place. I had a great garden there but I am using 5 gal. Homer Buckets as a garden now. I have only tomatoes, jalapenos, and bell peppers. Several pots of flowers and loquat tree. Looking to add more buckets to my veggie garden. emoticon

Hi, I'm Kim from the Pacific Northwest, land of rain, rain and more rain. I work full time and have two daughters living at home, one is going to college and the other is in elementary school. I also have a son married and in the army, living in North Carolina.

I LOVE gardening, even in the rain. I just put out some more bulbs, hoping the dang squirrels quit eating them, and moved some of my lepord bane from the front flower garden to the gravel road out front. I love the plants, but boy talk about aggressive take overs.

Any new garden ideas pass my way. I can't think of much I'd rather do than dig in the dirt and plant, especially veggies to can in the fall.

Good morning, all. I live in New England in the very north east of Massachusetts upon the mighty Merrimack River. The fall season is upon us and nature's colors are brilliant. We had a very bountiful vegetable crop of tomatos, peppers, beets and carrots this year. The garden has been cleared and winter rye has been spread over the rototilled earth. I still have some sage, parsley and basil still growing and will continue to take cuttings until snow falls.

Hello, I am new to spark people. Just getting comfy with the site. I am happy to find other people who enjoy gardening like I do. I live in Southeast Louisisiana. Deep in Bayou country, Cajun land, about 62 miles southwest of New Orleans. I am the mother of 4 grown children and grandmother to the most precious 7 soon to be 8 year old little boy who is the joy of my life. emoticon

Memory is a wonderful gift,
For with it the best is never past.
We carry thoughts of home in our hearts,
To live in always though time has passed.

In memory of my Dad, Magnus J. Eschete Sr. and sister, Rosalie E. Bascle who both died from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Hi. My name is AliSparky and I was delighted to find this SparkTeam. I am an avid gardener, but my enthusiasm surpasses my knowledge. I'd love to garden more, freeze more and eat more of my own veggies. I look forward to meeting you folks and learning more about gardening and good health.
