Hi Heather Hi Katie Welcome to this group
. I'm sure you will like it here, everyone is so nice :)
I love hearing about caring people helping animals out. We think we are doing them a favor by taking them in only to realize that they "saved" us. Awesome isnt it.
Welcome again,

Hi Heather and Katie, welcome to our great team.

Some people are just mongrels pure and simple. To do those sorts of things to animals just defies logic. I'm so glad people like both of you are around to make up for the scumbags

Be looking for you both over on the Chatter thread where you can get to know all the others here.

Hello everyone! My name is Katie. I'm 26 and living in Iowa. I'm currently in my second year of graduate school. I'm working on a Masters degree in biology with a secondary focus in zoo and aquarium science. I recently got married to the guy I've been dating since we were both 16.

We have a little fur-baby cat who we found nearly a year and a half ago. He was trapped under my parents neighbors garage refridgerator for nearly a week. He barely weighed a pound when we found him and it turned out that he was over six months old... Who could turn him away. :) He is now like our child and goes everywhere with us...including car rides and camping. Haha.

I'm hoping to get healthy and lose weight before I graduate in about a year! I've always struggled with my weight and stress took it's toll on me throughout my college career. I'm ready to finally start liking myself again. I look forward to getting to know people and making new friends along the way!

Slow and steady wins the race. :)

Hi Heather, welcome to this awesome team.. We are so glad to have you join us. I loved hearing about your furbabies and glad little Halo is doing well now and that she has found a forever home. So sad to think people are so deranged that they would do that to puppies. I'm sure one day they will get what is coming to them.

Join in the threads so we can get to know you and all about your family!!! emoticon

Hi :) I'm Heather from Texas. I'm the proud mother of 5 two legged children & 2 four legged babies. I was always a cat person, never cared for dogs. Then I met Princess Lacey. I fell in love with her as a puppy and she's been Mommy's girl ever since. A couple of years later, my husband got jealous & decided he needed his own dog, since Princess is definitely a Momma's dog. Enter Duchess Halo. We adopted Halo from one of the local rescues. She was one of a litter of 10 puppies that the rescue had nicknamed "the motor oil 10". Someone's dog had had a litter of puppies that had a slight case of mange...so their response was to cover them in motor oil, stick them in a box, and abandon them. They were very malnourished and losing hair like mad. One of the rescue workers took in the entire litter and nursed them back to health. We've now had her for about 6 months, and I'm happy to report she is beyond healthy! She's a little piggy - in more ways than one! She eats everything in sight (I figure that comes from being part of such a big litter, she thinks she has to eat fast and a lot or she'll starve) & when she gets really content, she snorts like a pig. It's the cutest darned thing! Of course, much to my husband's dismay, she's pretty much a Momma's girl too ;) So that's just a little bit about me. I'm glad I found this group!

Heather

Hi, I just found this team and as I have a rescued redbone coonhound who made the trek from Ohio to Canada and joined our family I thought this had to be a great place. All of our dogs have been rescued (three from the humane society and this fellow from a rescue organization) We are firm believers in the work they do and that all dogs deserve a forever home.

As for me I started here in February and have lost 36 pounds to date and lots of inches too :)

I watch my calories daily and exercise 4-5 times a week. I am always looking for ideas and support.

I am a married mother of two (son-20 daughter-12) and live in Ontario Canada.
Thanks for welcoming me :)

G'day team ,
Ive been a member for a few weeks now , l haven't introduced myself as yet , l like to be

Ive joined this team looking for support and advice from people in the same boat as me but with a bit more knowledge than l do when something rises and l do have s number of questions to ask concerning Bubba if any one can advise me it would be appreciated in time l
hope l can help others but while lm learning lll lean on some of you guys in helping me make
Bubbas life a happy one and one happy Pud .

Hi Liz, welcome to the team.

Wonder why the Sharpei is one of the most rescued breeds? I can't imagine giving up my pet no matter what the breed. I know that in some countries they are classed as dinner dogs (literally) which is pretty disgusting when you think about it.

Glad to see you join our team and look forward to seeing you over on the chat thread emoticon

Howdy,

My name is Liz and I live in Scappoose, OR with Cookie my Shar Pei. I have been in love with Pei's for over 20 years. They are one of the most "rescued" dog breeds. They have health problems galore and My Cookie is no different. She was a puppy mill Mama. I always tell friends, my dog's don't have good starts but their present's are wonderful

hello team, I'm Jessica. I am owned by Kirby (7 yr old boxer mix boy, my baby) and Ziggy (my almost 4 yr old beagle mix girl, Ninja). I am married and have a highly stressful job. so, my furkids help me to forget about it (most of the time) when i come home and they are SO happy to see me. DH and I adopted Kirby 5 yrs ago, and we fostered Ziggy (used to be Missy) for 4 months and adopted her January 2011. We had a cat, Kitty, who was a PITA. she was hyperthyroid and on-off diabetic needing insulin injections 2 xs/day. she went to rainbow bridge 3/26/10. I am not a cat fan, but i miss her a great deal. she wasn't a lap sitting, cuddly, let you hold her type. but she was just wonderful. so, i promised DH the next furkid we get is a cat, since he wants one.

Hi, I am Marty and am here for most of the same reasons others are and this time I will achieve my goals!

I have 3 dogs that we have resued.

We have 3 dogs:

Della (female mixed Lab) soon to be 13 years old. We got Della as a puppy from the SPCA.
Hershey (female mixed Lab) soon to be 12 years old. Hershey was a puppy found wandering in our suburban neighborhood as a puppy about 12 weeks old.
Toba (female mixed Terrier) who turned 8 this month. We have had Toba for 2 years. Unfortunately the daughter of good friends passed away and this was her dog. Her parents did not want to keep Toba because she reminded them of their deceased daughter, yet they could not bring themselves to give Toba to the SPCA. So we took Toba in and our friends are grateful to know Toba has a good home.

I know it looks like I'm the one man band welcoming here, it's a quirk of Sparkpeople that if you don't post in a thread you don't get notifications. Please drop in on the chat thread, most of us are over there chatting about all sorts of things.

Feel free to post anything you wish, you'll always be welcomed here.

Hi - I'm Wanda, but I'll also answer to Leah here.

Although I'm not new to Spark (3+ years) - I'm new to this team, and a new pet-parent again. I've adopted a rescue 3 weeks ago - a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix from a local rescue group. My Keiki (Hawaiian for "little one") is about 3 years old or so, but unfortuately is also heartworm positive. She just got back from the vets yesterday evening after getting the "fast-kill" shots. Now we start the 30 days of cage rest. We also have another puppy at home - a foxhound mix that may have dalmatian and/or pit and/or something else. Her name is Larka - we adopted her from the Humane Society about a month ago.

I work in the financial services industry, and thankfully, close to home also - very rare for the Washington DC area! I'm divorced but "happily partnered" - living with my partner and his 17 yr old daughter (senior in HS). My youngest son lives nearby with my "grand-doggie" a Visla that's about a year old. My oldest son and his wife live in the area with my 3 grandsons, ranging from 7-3 years old.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone here!

Wanda :-)

Hi all,
I'm Jenny, and I foster for an organisation called Starting Over Dog Rescue. At the moment I have a vibrant powder-puff X in my care.

Have just discovered our rather hyper foster doggie asleep on my bed, with the cat she has been chasing for over a week now, asleep just across from her on my dresser. Finally, they have made some kind of peace and can be in the same room together. I'd take a picture but then you'd see how messy my room is...

Looks like she has an adoptive interest, but is staying with me for another week for a little more training.

We'll take a break from fostering for about a week (mainly to give the cat a break!) then take on the next one. Unfortunately there's plenty around!

Jenny (SUNPANTHER) (AUSTRALIA)

Hello! I'm Nicolette (Nic is fine too) and I have four rescued cats who all started off as my fosters and just never left:

-Piper: 4.5 years old, the queen bee
-Sinatra: 4 years old, I got him when he was only 4 or 5 weeks. He's now 20 pounds and extremely bonded to me
-Lola: 3.5 years old. She has a deformed front paw but gets around like any other cat. May have a seizure disorder :(
-Sofia: 2.5 years old. She's a Maine Coon mix and a little diva. She must know she's the baby of the family

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

I feel your pain, I had two cats for many years who hated the sight of each other. It never got any better right up 'till my beautiful Josie died last year.

I really don't know what you could do .......... and yes it's a rescue for sure, although not one that is as pleasant as most.

Peace and long life - Jules

Okay, I have two cats here that were going to be put down the next day. Yes, there are no-kill shelters, but there are Waiting Lists, and my friends who originally owned the cats were in a nasty foreclosure situation. They are in housing where no pets are allowed, but understanding is permissible for their autistic daughter. Unfortunately, my original guys do NOT get along with these two, and it has been a mess. Anyhow I really guess this qualifies as Rescue, even if not official. Anyhow, I want all my cats to mainstream together, but it is not happening. And I am not about to rescue any more, even though I have nightmares about suddenly doing so.

Yep, there I am, swimming through the desert sands. Might just be a mirage, after all. But this is life, and we learn best about it if we explore it, and take our chances. A life unexplored, after all, is one of the saddest things out there.

Hi Chris, welcome to the team.

What a wonderful place you are working with. Over time I think the things you would see would peck away at a persons soul. I wonder about the human race (at least some of them) the things they do just disgust me.

Hope you like it here and I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

Hello everyone! My name is Chris. I work for a Non-Profit Organization called Pets on Death Row. We work to pull dogs and cats out of kill-shelters before it is too late. It is heart-wrenching work because we can't save them all and I've cried enough tears to fill an ocean, but when I look at the faces of the ones that we DID get out alive, all of the heartache and tears are worth it.

Hi Leanne, welcome to the team. My cat Pussass was really an outside cat, but getting older has turned him into a bit of a wuss that likes all the comforts of inside.

Hope to get to know you better in some of the chat threads, glad to have another animal love on the team.

Hi my name is Leanne, I live in Maine and have two indoor spoiled adopted cats and one outside cat that has adopted me her former owners lived in the trailer park but moved out and she was left behind about 2 months ago. She stays mostly in my yard and I feed and love her everyday. I am hoping to get her to the vet before the real cold weather comes then I will move her to an indoor cat.

I work full time I am an administrative assistant for Architects and Engineers.

I love dogs too but if you have a dog in the park they charge you extra, so I visit friends with dogs to get and give them my affection.

Hello! My name is Lorri. I am 40, divorced and have 2 rescue dogs and one rescue cat. Although currently unemployed, I am a nursery school teacher. I have a passion for reading, animals, and tattoos.

I'm rejoining Sparkpeople after a brief hiatus. The program worked for me in the past so I'm determined to keep at it.

I just relocated to Pennsylvania from NYC and am feeling a bit isolated so I'm looking forward to making friends here on Sparkpeople .

Hi Cosmicquest, welcome to the team. I too loved that picture the moment I saw it, cracked me up for sure.

I was laughing with your dog "he who must not be named" maybe if you ever put a moniker on him it'd be Voldemort??

Glad to have you on the team

I absolutely love the photo attached to this team OMG you mean we're adopted.

In my case, our FOUR adopted critters would say...what do you mean we're dogs???? Of course we are and so are you and Dad!!!!

I just love conversing with like-minded folks and I'm glad you all are here.

We live in a rural area and a stray showed up last week....I told hubby...you can give him water for this heat and put out dry food if he looks like he needs it...oh, and check his general health..but DO NOT NAME HIM.

We will refer to him as "the dog that we are feeding."...NO NAMING.

Hi Melinda, welcome to the team.

You'll find a few people here with geriatric cats and dogs, my oldest is only 13 but she's had a long tough previous life.

Great to hear you are "fostering" Lady, I can't personally imagine how I'd ever send any furbaby back foster or not.

This is a team full of animal lovers, I'm sure you'll be happy here. Looking forward to seeing more of you on the messageboards

Hi, I'm Melinda and I've been away from Sparkpeople for a couple months and it's time to get back on track. My husband and I are empty nesters now, except for our furbabies. I have a 19 year old cat, Licorice, who rules the animal kingdom; my puggles, Duke and Roxie (a rescue) and we are currently fostering a 13 year old shelter beagle that we call Lady. Her chances of getting adopted are pretty slim, so she will probably be here with us the rest of her days, and that's just fine. And I occasionally babysit my grandferret! It is heart warming to see so many people who open their homes and hearts to these animals.

Hi Ron and Toby so very glad to see you here.

A house isn't a home without a pet of some sort and you are right it's hard to go for just one rescue dog, probably why I've got three.

Hope you enjoy it here.

... Ron and Toby. Toby is the one with hair.

Dogs and I have had a lifelong love affair, and I've had a dog friend since I can remember. Well, except for the years I was in the Navy.

My wife and I raised and trained German shepherds for years until it got to be too much for us. As you folks well know, dogs can take a lot of time if you raise and train them right, and if you don't have time to raise a German shepherd right, don't do it. Period. Trust me on this.

Our last shepherd passed away back in 2004, and our house was empty and sad. I just wasn't used to walking across a room without stepping over a dog. So, although we love the German shepherd breed, we decided to stop by animal rescue and see if we could find a friend. We found a hundred. No, I couldn't take them all, just one, and I signed the papers with a tear because I wanted them all.

His name is Toby, he is eight years old now, and is part catahoula, German shepherd, and ?? His job is to guard my pickup when we go out, chase squirrels, and cold-nose me in the middle of the night when a thunderstorm blows through. And, like all the dogs I've known, he's my best friend.

So, that's enough about this and that. Proud to meet y'all, and we're proud to be here.

Yeah I cut his fur very short right now because of the heat. In the winter I get asked a lot if he is a sheepdog, his fur gets loooonnngg and thick. I sort of prefer him with long hair but it's too hot in the summer for that. At least where I live now.

Ahhh running ..... I remember doing that (used to be a state champion)!! Way too many sprains and breaks put paid to that now. I used to love it too

That's what happens when you start to get older ...... DON'T DO IT (get older I mean) emoticon

He still looks like a good boy and very tolerant, a lot of dogs don't like being hoisted up in the air. I can definitely see the poodle in him, they are great dogs.
