In high school, I took Spanish for 3 years, French for 1 year, and the years of Hebrew school at my parents and the rabbi's insistance...lol. Living and working in California, I can get by in Spanish if I'm asking easy questions or trying to tell someone something simple. I can't remember my French except for "Voulez vous couchez avec moi c'est soir" which means "will you sleep with me tonight" and I don't have much use for that anymore...lol. As for the Hebrew, I can still read a few words but my comprehension is completely gone. I do know a few swear words in Yiddish, Spanish, and English. Teehee!

You're all right, knowing a language or not doesn't make you smart. I don't think of myself as smart, especially when it comes to maths. Numbers and me don't go well...at all! lol

I mostly only remember French swear words too! I'm sure it'll be useful one day :P

De's right Sandi, we are as smart as we want to be. Just because you don't know another lingo doesn't make you a dunce. Shame on you for thinking that! emoticon We all have our areas of "expertese" and we all share it.

Like I said, all I remember are the swear words and food in Polish, and family. But that doesn't make me an expert on speaking Polish. Only when I don't want other people hearing me swear or what names I call them. Tee-Hee emoticon

As far as too much cafine, love it! emoticon

De I'm not Jewish, in fact I can't speak an entire language except English.

I pick up on languages, especially with my love of world music, I love to hear people sing in their own language.

If anyone is interested I've stuck a couple of links of a couple of my favourite world music songs

Sandi...AHEM! First of all, knowing another language doesn't mean you are necessarily smart. And, not knowing another language does not make you a dunce. You happen to be my friend, and I don't take kindly to you bad-mouthing my friend! You are smarter than you think...you don't get to be this old by being stupid, my dear. Besides, I learn things from you and my other friends here, so I guess you are rubbing off on me, too!

I try to pick up some Polish. My Ma still speaks it pretty well. Her grandparents, my great grandparents were from Poland. They the grandmothers spoke little to no English. The grandfathers great English. I remember seeing my great grandmother and she would call me Amelia - Emily in Polish or Amelka - which would be like Em or Emmy in Polish. The only other words I remember of know are the swear words, food, relatives, and very few everyday words. One of these days I'm going to see if I can learn Polish again. It'll be interesting.

Wow, Annelies. I'm impressed with the languages you know. I grew up listening to my grandparents and parents speak French but I never really did. I understand most of it but never really spoke it - sad.

Funny I didn't find English a hard language at all. I could write and talk it very well at only 7 years old, just from watching TV, and listening to music.
The Germans have a lot harder time to learn different languages, because everything is dubbed here. Even if you want to go see a movie, it is dubbed. I hate it :(

But I love learning languages! French is very hard too, had it 9 years in school and still I have a ton of difficulties with the language. Although I love French, so nice to listen to. And I was born in the French part of Belgium...! Forgot most of it unfortunately :(

Jules...you mean like "L'Chaim"? I had to go to Hebrew school for 8 years. It does help to have a sinus condition when trying to pronounce Hebrew words.

You're right Em English is a very difficult thing to learn. German is not an easy language either, all those masculine and feminine verbs etc.

Hebrew is another one of those difficult ones all those, sorry there is no other way to say it, spitty sounding vowels. Everytime I try to pronounce it I sound like I'm hacking up a furball.

Don't feel bad about your German Annelies, English ain't too easy either and I grew up here, spelling too. English was never a fave subject in H.S. Who cares about what it a noun, conjunction, adverb, etc. As long as you get the point across.

Thanks everyone for the kind welcome! German isn't an easy language, it took me a long time to learn it. Even after living here for 8 years, I still make small mistakes. But hubby is a good teacher :)

I'm really glad you joined Annelies. We have a lot of fun here trading pet stories, recipes, and talk about just anything.

That was a sweet story about Nelly. She's a cutie and lucky you and hubby were able to take her home in time for Christmas.

Sit, stay, enjoy the team! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi everyone! I just joined this team. My name is Annelies, 25 years old and I live in Germany. Originally, I am from Belgium.
I adopted my first dog, Nelly, in December 2008. I don't understand how anyone could put a such a cute little dog (or any animal!) into a shelter... My husband's boss works as a volunteer in a shelter. She knew we were looking for a dog and told us about Nelly. She said she'd be perfect for us so we stopped by the shelter the next day. It was love at first sight :) I immediately fell for those cute little eyes, big hanging ears and that fluffy tail! The look in her eyes said "please take me home with you, I don't like it here". The next 1.5 weeks, we stopped by almost every day (the shelter doesn't allow you to take the animal with you too soon, to make sure the pet and you go well together) and every time we saw Nelly, we could see the excitement in her eyes, she was already waiting for us with a wagging tail, too cute :)
19th of December 2008, a day I will never forget, that day we finally took Nelly home with us, right in time for our first Christmas together! :) Words really can't describe how lucky and happy I am to have her in my life. She's the best :) And she's being spoiled to pieces ;)

So that's my little dog adoption story. Seems to be a great team here, can't wait to start chatting with you all! Thanks again for inviting me, Emily! :)

Hi, all. I'm Shannon, 42, single mother of 2 boys (20 and 13). I have 2 kitties, brother and sister rescues. The boy (Nubbers) was born with a missing back paw but I don't think it's missing at all as the missing toes are all on his other 3 paws. LOL He sure is a loverboy! His sister (Lily), on the other hand, is a wacky girl who rears up like a horse then juts herself forward toward whatever object she's aiming for to scratch herself on. He's a brown/gray tabby and she's a cream/carmel tabby. As soon as I buy a house, I'll be rescuing 1 or 2 dogs.

Almost every pet I've owned in my adult life has been a rescue. My ex-husband still has my shepherd mix pup Banzai - he was abandoned in a house with his brother and mom when he was a baby.

I lost about 90 lbs 5 yrs ago when I went through my divorce but gained it back when my current BF wined and dined me. How do we not see these things happening? LOL So I found SP last summer through my quit smoking website. I've been smober for one year and have been on my healthy eating/exercising journey for 9 months (minus the winter when I fell).

I'm glad to be part of a great group.

"Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibiltiy into flames of acheievement."

How great is this thread being able to find out about our fellow team members?

Andrea (number 1) I always thought I'd get married, but as the saying goes "I didn't know that the last time I was asked would be the last time I'd be asked". I can live with it though, I too like my freedom and independence.

On the WW side please come on over to the WW points and recipes threads and jump on in, I might be posting recipes with Aussie points, I think that they would be pretty similar to the US.

Hi to both Andreas! Love your rescue stories you guys are great! And don't worry, there are a few of us lifetime Weight Watchers here too. Few of us are incorporating the WW techniques along with Spark. If either of you have any ideas, throw them in.

Hi, I'm another Andrea, 49 years young, married to a wonderful, patient man, and have a (almost) 9 year old son. I volunteer and foster for a border collie rescue group and currently have 3 foster furbabies along with my own 4 rescued furry children - Toby, the oldest and biggest at around 120 lbs., Lab mixed with who knows what? JJ an Australian Shepherd/Lab mix, pulled from a kill shelter in WV tied outside to a doghouse. Jake, adopted from friends who had found a stray border collie who then gave birth to 8 puppies - all male - he is a Border Collie/Lab mix, he nearly died when he was 8 weeks old when his lower organs pushed up into his chest causing his lungs to collapse which required emergency surgery. And finally my girl Zoe, a Sheltie, we were fostering both Zoe and her sister Blue, both had Parvo and we lost sweet Blue ... we decided that Zoe fought so hard to stay with us that we adopted her. We also have 2 cats, both rescues adopted from shelters. Trouble we adopted while living in Florida, and Jinx we adopted a couple of years ago here in Virginia.

I also have had horses in the past and love to ride. I enjoy bike riding, reading, cooking, and travel.

I lost about 45 pounds with Weight Watchers in 2004 but have gradually put it all back on since leaving the program and am now trying to get back to that healthy weight.

Andrea...welcome to our motley crew! I love that you rescue animals with issues, as so do I. My cat has FIP, my wolf has seperation issues and ate the wall out of a house, and my Pit/Lab has emotional and physical issues caused by being used as bait for fighting Pits. I'm sure you know that the ones who need us the most are the ones who love us the most. Thanks for letting us know more about you.

It's great to hear everyone's stories, and, as a fairly new member, get acquainted. It seems like such an interesting and diverse group, all coming together due to a love of the rescued animal (a higher purpose I cannot imagine)! emoticon

I'm Andrea, I'm 52 (which crept up on me), single and work as a practice manager in a veterinary hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. Like Juleen, I've been close to marriage at least twice, and thought I had plenty of time to make a decision on marriage. Time kinda got away from me! I'm still hopeful though I really do like my independence. Two years ago I lost 85 pounds in Weight Watchers. I kept it off for 8 months, then relaxed my vigilance, and gained 30 pounds back very quickly. So before I gain the other 55, I wanted to get back on track with a lifetime plan. Sparkpeople seems the perfect place to do that.

I live with 4 dogs, 3 of which are rescues, and 2 rescued cockatiels. I also have one cat, a lovely chocolate point siamese mix that showed up one day and stayed. Three of my rescues (one now deceased) have had serious issues, but as I work in veterinary medicine, I have lots of resources to assist me in making their lives better.

Oh, and just a little brag on my latest rescue, Kobe, whose pic is on my spark page. This may seem small, but yesterday I caught him sleeping outside in the sun. That's the first time he's been relaxed enough outside to lie down. Also, in the last week, he's been comfortable enough to hop up on my bed in the morning and put his face against mine as a reminder that it's time to get up! He's been with me since November and came from the local humane society where he had been for a year waiting to be adopted.

Hi all my name is Juleen and I come from Flowerdale, Victoria in Australia. Smack dab in the middle of those devastating bushfires last February.

I'm 54 (feel 21) single (been close to marrying at least 3 times) and I am a carer for my family. Mum 88 who has heart and arthritis problems, younger brother who has AF, epilepsy, other heart problems, asthma and goodness knows whatelse and an older brother who is mildly retarded and has a short bowel disorder.

I have 3 rescued dogs Bruno a Lhasa Apso X, Ladybird a Jack Russell and Maggs a mini Schnauzer X yorkie, 2 cats Pussass a calico who just wandered in 10 years ago and Josie who was left across the road and I coaxed her to my place. I have one chicken (all the rest have passed through the years), one Sulphur Crested Cockatoo who was wild and broke his wing, he's been here for 20 years, a lovebird who blew in one day over 1o years ago and an Angora goat who wandered in 11 years ago who I just recently had to put down with bad arthritis.

I have a wicked sense of humour and call a spade a spade, definitely no BS, I am chief cook and bottle washer here at home and have done just about everything in my life from cooking, welding to computer seller and spray painting.

Now who was saying they were long winded?????? I think I've got verbal diarrhea!!

Peace and long life - Jules

Hi, my name is Mary Anne. I grew up and Maine, went to college in NY, married and moved to MA where we raised our daughter and son. Fifteen years ago, we moved to PA.

At this time, I only have two kitties. Would like to eventually have more furbabies but am trying to get my left in order after the unexpected death of my husband in Sept 2008. I also am traveling to Maine as often as I can to help my dad...mom has Alzheimer's.

Ms Molly has diabetes and needs injections twice a day. She is 16. PolyDactyl is around 8 and has the true mitten feet.

I love to work out in the yard, walk, read, listen to music and check in with spark friends.

Hi, my name is Donna, I'm 53 years old, married to my best friend and we have two sons, 20 and 18. They are both seniors in HS this year and will be graduating on June 4th! Our older son, David, is high-functioning autistic and will be graduating with a regular diploma!! He has worked so hard to get this far. He'll go to the local community college next year. Our younger son, Michael, is a certified genius and will be attending Tulane University in New Orleans in the fall.

The furry part of our family includes two dogs and three cats. Dori is a six year old Australian shepard/huskie mix and Jack is a Huskie/lab mix that will be three years old in August. KK is the oldest cat, a black and white short-hair, getting close to 18 years old. We rescued him when he was 12. Missy and Leo are long-haired main coon/tabby mixes, sister and brother, about four years old. All of the animals were rescued and we love them all. The only reason we don't have more animals is because city ordinance limits us to five.

I live in eastern Washington, we moved here four years ago when my husband got a job as a computer scientist at the national lab here. I was raised on the west side of the state, in the greater Seattle area. After high school, I enlisted in the Air Force. I was awarded a scholarship after nine years, went to the University of Washington and earned my bachelor's degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. Then I was commissioned as an officer. After 21 year of service, I retired in 1995. We moved to Eugene OR so my husband could work on his PhD in Computer Science.

Life has been an interesting journey so far. Like Em, I also have epilepsy but not a life-long affliction. I was just diagnosed last fall after having two unprovoked grand-mal seizures in September. I spent the year before that recovering from brain surgery, the removal of an infected bone flap, wore a helmet for six months and now have a plastic prosthesis implanted to replace part of my skull. I also managed to slip on the ice, while wearing a helmet and I was walking the dogs, and broke my right ankle. So, during my last surgery, I was wearing a cast!!

Em, you didn't know what you were asking for when you asked people to introduce themselves. I tend to get long winded, even when sitting at a keyboard.

Glad to have joined a group that cares so much about animals.

OMG...I forgot to mention that for the past 2 1/2 years, I have lived with the most incredible man I have ever met. He has taken care of me through 5 surgeries and has taken care of our critters and the house, too. We have EVERYTHING in common and have not even had so much as an argument in all the time we've been together. He is loving and kind to all our 'kids', and I love to watch him playing with the wolf when he doesn't know I'm watching. I call him my miracle man because it was truly miraculous that we found each other in a town of 770 people...lol! An added bonus - he looks like Willie Nelson and has hair down to his tushy, which I faithfully braid each day before he goes to work.

You're gonna be sorry you asked...lol. My name is De and I live 6200 feet up Mt. San Jacinto in the San Bernardino National Forest. We are in the mountain range above Palm Springs, California, with the cities of Hemet and Banning on the other sides of the mountain. I rescued animals for many years in Pittsburgh,PA before moving up here, and for the past 15 years, I have been rescuing "unrescuable" animals that were scheduled to be put down. My "kids" have included 5 wolf hybrids, 1 neurotic Pit/Lab that was used as bait for fighting Pit Bulls, 3 domestic cats, 1 psychotic feral cat, 1 1600 pound draft horse, 2 man-eating cockatiels, 1 300 gallon tank of unwanted fish, and 2 dozen aquatic frogs who, due to crowding, had to share quarters with the unwanted fish. After my husband was killed by a drunk driver 8 years ago, I stopped bringing new animals home and devoted myself to making sure that my remaining ones lived happily ever after. When I blew out my knee a few years ago, it became increasingly difficult to care for all my charges, so my horse moved to Michigan to live with a family who loves her madly, the birds went to a masochistic woman who doesn't mind bird bites (and the last I heard, one of them was whistling the entire theme song from the Andy Griffith Show). The frogs went to my friend who sadly froze them all to death when the power was out for four days, and too many of my beloved babies have gone over the Rainbow Bridge, the last of whom was Sapphire, my 18 year old Timberwolf/Husky who, though blind and arthritic, protected my property until an hour before she laid down and went to eternal sleep. Who am I, you ask? I am the culmination of thousands of incredible experiences given to me by animals that someone else wanted to destroy. I am truly blessed, and I have got so much good karma stored up from caring for these critters that I don't have to be nice to people anymore!

I'd rather see those black ones than the bright, see-through yellow ones I seen on a rather large butt last year! WOW I think my eye still hurt. All the nooks and crannies. Plus she was wearing a thong! UGH!!! Sorry, the bathroom's upstairs! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Ha ha ha I'm a biker chick. But you will NEVER see me wearing those spandex biker pants! I would scare people seeing my big butt in black stretch pants.

Hi Em and Sneaky Pi!

My name is Debbi, I've been a widow for 10 years-second marriage. Right now I have two dogs, Sam, mostly Border Collie and Koda, Rottweiler/Shepherd mix. I've lived in many states, my favorite was living in the Blue Ridge mountains with my husband on 16 acres. I've now returned to New Jersey and bought a home a block away from where I lived when I first left. I love to garden, walk, paint and want to get back into sculpture. And fix my bike up-this summer is bikeriding. I talk to anyone in stores, and myself if no one is around! I am also very proud that this April 26 I will be celebrating 21 years of being clean and sober! And two years smoke free. Now I have to deal with the food addiction I picked up!

And I love this board and everyone on here who has rescued an animal.

Good morning fellow fur lovers! Hope the weekend is going along great for everyone!

This might sound silly, but I'd like for everyone to re-introduce themselves. Almost like getting reacquainted with everyone here. I'd love to get to know team better, maybe there's something we missed or just let us know what's new. Here goes...

Hi, I'm Emily or Em for short. I'm 46, married with one furbaby, he's a kitty named Sneak Pi & he's 16. I'm on Disability now because of a car accident in 2002. It took Disability 5years to achieve. Slow government. I love my ABC's-Animals, Books/Baseball, Crochet. Summer is here and Cubs Baseball is on the Air! I also try to volunteer at shelters when I can. I have Epilepsy, bad knees, feet, back, sever case of endometriosis, had at least 10 different surgeries so health-wise I suck at it, Sneaky Pi is far more healthier. Yes, I'm jealous, HaHa!

And in 2007 I lost 55+lbs with Weight Watcher and was at my ideal weight, 140lbs. Too many personal tradgies/problems came around and now I've gained back at least 20-25lbs back and really feel the difference. I'm hoping to loose those re-gained pounds and feel better again.
