Hi everyone,

I have restarted my programme today. I am the proud adopted mummy of a beautiful black cat, Sooty. My partner and I adopted him last June from a local rescue charity. He is a mummy's boy. He will sleep on my bed at night, usually curled up around my feet and is always on the window sill waiting for me when I come home from work.

He is unwell at the moment- possibly having partial seizures although the vet is not really sure what is happening. It has only recently started and he is fine, in no pain or anything for the majority of the time. We are just waiting for the results of a blood test, hopefully with some answers. Just monitoring him for the time being.

I wish everyone and their adopted babies all the best,

Laura

Hi ! My name is Betsy and I finally found this team! I had seen it briefly before and just recently realized ALL of my family pets represent a rescued family! We just got our FIRST dog~he was in a fost/adopt situation .He is a 75 lb. 1 yr.old part Rhodesian Ridgeback/part Retriever. We also have 4 cats~well, the first one is a kitten ~6mos.old we found at the local Farmers' Market just after Christmas where someone had abandoned him~just left him on the street in the cold ~ on Christmas Eve.Our oldest two cats were in local shelters and the last one we found on the street in the rain ,crying underneath a "sandwich" board and she was also abandoned~at the time ,she was only maybe 4 weeks old. We LOVE them all and are HAPPY they are in our home ! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi Marni, I had a pit bull living over my head in the condo. The owner mistreated him and left him on porch to pee on my head. But that big fella was as friendly a dog as I have ever met. They are great. (And yes I reported him to animal control). His girlfriend finally left him and took her dog.

Aloha, my name is Marni, and I live on the West side of the Island of O'ahu. I am the proud mom of two grown sons and one blue and white Pibble girl named Pebbles. Pibble is a term I came across on one of the Pit Bull advocate sites, and it fits her perfectly. I find myself moving more because of her and nothing beats her undiluted joy at seeing me when I get home from work. Belly rubs are a great decompression tool, and she loves getting them.

Sorry to hear about a loved pet passing. I have gone through it too many times myself. But I would never stop adopting because they don't live long enough. The time they have with us is just so precious and if we can give them a good life that's all it takes to make me go through it again and again. Hugs!

Hi Eve. I am sorry to hear that you had to make the end of life choice for your dog. They never live long enough for those who love them. I am glad you will be rescuing another dog. There are so many who really need love in their lives and they change your life right back. My little Crackers is showing his first signs of age this year but mine are so small I can hope for another decade at least. Impossible to imagine life without them. I am so sorry for your loss.

Oh, Eve! I'm so terribly sorry for your loss of your beloved Amber. That's such a heartbreaking decision to have to make, but when our love for them is greater than our love for ourselves, it makes it easier to live with.

Your memories of your sweet Amber will bring you many tears right now, but they will also bring comfort, and eventually, smiles again as time works its gentle magic in healing your heart.

You're in my prayers.

I'm Eve -- just had to have my old dog put down, and when the Vet started talking chemo I said forget it, I wouldn't even do that to myself.

I know I will look for another dog, Amber was a wheaten scotty -- but right now I just feel like an empty shell -- my better half is gone.

Carolyn, I also try to cut down on Garfy and Chrisy's allergies by washing anything that comes into long time contact with them like their blankies or my sheets and covers. I use All "free" detergent on these things and "free" fabric softener. I wash their things fairly often and throw them in the dryer to get off fur and flakes weekly. It has made a difference in their allergies and mine too. emoticon

I can certainly appreciate Harriet & Crackers being grain-free. My first Maine Coon cat (LucyFur .... my profile picture) was allergic to corn and it drove me to distraction trying to figure it out!! It set off asthma in her. I was so relieved when I finally narrowed it down!! Finding a cat food (even the specialized, natural, allergy foods) without any corn product was tough. We paid nearly $40 per 6 lb. bag of food for the cats (couldn't keep her from raiding the other cat's bowl!!) but the alternative was to medicate her for the asthma and I was strongly opposed to such a step.

Your training tips are great!! Yes .... opportunities for training moments abound, if we just watch and catch them at the right moment.

I made two videos of Crackers today because he was being so adorable. The first was after I put his Thundershirt on:
https://youtu.be/CGdzgDnU68A

The second was a bit more how he is normally:
https://youtu.be/icotxItXvrY

I have never tried cheerios, because Harriett has a rather tender tummy so my dogs eat grain-free. There are some pre-prepared training treats (Tricky Trainers and No Grainers) they like that are my go-to when I'm feeling lazy. I also use fresh veggies, dried sweet potato, chopped up dried rabbit sausage, lamb lung, lamb liver, venison heart, bison liver, etc, and freeze-dried diet disks, treats and various livers and meats. My supertreats, for very hard tasks or very distracting situations, (or for counterconditioning) are turkey dogs and little cheddar pieces soaked in the turkey hotdog juice for Harriett, and boiled chicken breast for Crackers. Usually, however, they are happy to work for their kibble. Even for service dog work, I just put Harriett's kibble in the training bag instead of her bowl and she'll do all of her established tricks for just that. They also are asked to do one or more behaviors before I will open the door for walks or for the stairs and bedroom at night, before feeds in their bowls, before being allowed out of the car, etc. Any resource you control that they want can be used as a training reward. Even moving forward on leash can be turned into a reward for sitting or not pulling. Harriett loves licking and sometimes I ask for a behavior and reward her by letting her lick my face.=-)

Hi Jessica! So glad you included the picture of Harriet & Crackers (love their names!).

One of the best training tips I ever received was to use plain cheerios as a training treat. It's tiny, so won't spoil their appetites for a healthy dinner, and they love 'em!!! When I had my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it used to amaze me that she would happily do 3 tricks to get a single cheerio!! The only command which ALWAYS gets a treat is "Come!" That way, I don't have to worry about whether or not they will decide to obey! I used to keep a small tupperware bowl of cheerios by my computer so that I always had a treat immediately available.

Another good tip for anyone with puppies -- get a couple of old washcloths (ones ready for the rag bag), get them wet, squeeze out fairly well, and put them in the freezer. When a puppy is teething, just give them a frozen rag! It feels wonderful on their gums and will save your shoes from being chewed up!

This is Harriett and Crackers, my rescue American Hairless Terriers. Crackers, my boy, is the dark one and has serious anxiety and reactivity issues. He is also incredibly sweet and loving and lives to please his very few very loved ones. Harriett, the girl, is pink and tan and is very laid-back and works part-time as my Service Dog. She is independent and has the classic terrier attitude of "what's in it for me?" although since we've been doing service dog work I've noticed a marked increase in her willingness to be more team-spirited =-)

I'm Jessica, happy to go by username Chiquitar, and I got them about 5 years ago as 2 & 3 yo pets from Ratbones Rescues. They were shipped to Guam from Oregon. I have had severe allergies and asthma my whole life, including very bad dog allergies. AHTs are the easiest dogs to live with for allergy sufferers, and while some people's dog allergies get worse with the constant exposure, a lucky few get better, like the dogs are acting as allergy shots. I expected to be one of the former, but my dog allergies are almost completely cured now, even around the furriest of dogs.

I used to work as an Aquarist (zookeeper for fish) but I got injured and it developed into a permanent nerve pain condition that makes me unable to work. I was very interested in behavior and training in my career and worked with many fish, sharks, sea turtles, and octopuses. I've worked with Crackers since his reactivity began to show a few months after adoption (I think he was too insecure to react before this) and while I made some big mistakes because I was new to dog ownership, he has improved a lot and I hope to do more desensitizing and social rehabilitation with him when we live somewhere I can recruit helper dogs. I trained Harriett for service dog work and we are currently expanding her range to more helpful tasks, but I am still not completely sure she is cut out for service dog work, so she is very part-time.

Dog care on Guam is rather in the dark ages--fighting dogs were only outlawed recently, loose dogs that roam the neighborhood are more a rule than the exception, it is normal and legal to have a guard dog tied out for 100% of its life, animal control is vastly understaffed, and the one shelter gets almost 20 dogs PER DAY. I was lucky enough to join a basic obedience class with Harriett soon after I got her, but the trainer moved away and I haven't been able to find any positive trainers since. I'm currently exploring the option of starting part-time as a dog trainer myself, as the research and intense training for reactivity and service dog work, plus my experience training exotics, has led to me being the go-to for some of my friends and acquaintances for help with their dogs.So I've started volunteering at the shelter and that will help me find out if training is something I reasonably do with my disability, as well as something I want to try to do for a living.

I love talking training and can go on all day about it, so if anybody has behavior questions or tips and tricks please post them!

Nice to meetcha, everybody!

I do love the pics y'all are posting of your furbabies!! At the moment we have just the 2 cats -- a 10 year old Maine Coon mix named BiddeFur, and a 2-years old Bengal mix named HazelNut. If you're not familiar with Bengals, they are semi-wild (not feral .... there's a big difference!). HazelNut is a powerful, very muscular and lean cat who is rather aggressive. We didn't realize she was Bengal when she was given to us as a 4-week kitten. Her spotted belly told our vet what she was and he explained to us, "You simply must realize that you now have a small tiger in your home!" You see, Bengals are a cross between a plain old short-haired domestic cat and the Asian Leopard Cat (wild .... like a bobcat or cougar!!). The "purebreds" must be at least 4th generation removed from the wild before they can be shown in a cat show. I found that many, perhaps even most, Bengal Rescue groups had gone bust because so many breeders simply couldn't take the wildness in order to get the 4th generation and they would dump their entire cattery into rescue. (Nice of 'em, huh?) We found a superb animal behaviourist in England who worked with us to get a handle on our wild child and get us to a point where we weren't being sliced and diced, and that BiddeFur could live in peace!! HazelNut would actually wait for BiddeFur to go in the litter box and then attack her there! She was a rascal and a half!! She does have moments when she curls up on my shoulder or along my arm, but it's usually only a couple of times a week. One interesting point is that when my DH does his morning Bible reading, he reads out loud and she sits there quietly but intently watching him. When he's done, she leaves and goes back to watching birds on the sunporch!

This picture is of both cats on my Mom's bed (Mom is 91 and lives with us). Please note this is only a twin-size bed and Mom says the cats take up 2/3 of it!!

Here's Patches. His full name is Soul Patch, because of his soul patch. He is 12 years old and was born under our deck to a feral mama. We trapped, neutered and released the whole family. Mama Kitty was so mad she left and never came back, but Patches and his sisters stayed around for a little while. Patches started out life as a feral cat but now he sleeps in the bed with my hubby and me. He's still skittish at times, but other times he's a real love bug. I'll post a picture of my other kitty later. Will someone else post a picture of their baby?

Hi Linda! Glad to meet you and your furbabies!

Delighted to know that your driver's license indicates you are an organ donor!!! Make sure, though, that your family is aware of your wishes, since most hospitals won't cooperate unless the whole family says it's OK. A good second step is to go to this website:

Hi, my name's Nancy and I'm new to this team. I've been doing Spark recipes for several years, but finally decided this month to start using the tracking feature. Still learning about teams and how they work. I have 2 sweet kitties that I love very much, and volunteer at my local animal shelter. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Jane .... delighted to hear of your 3 dogs. I grew up with a black lab and I'm very active in a Coonhound rescue group. Coonies are just wonderful dogs!!! Good for you for building that sweet girl up from a bag of bones to a healthy, happy dog!!! That takes a lot of dedication!!

I'm a returning Sparker (after being gone 5 or 6 years!, but am happy to say my weight is only 5 lbs. above what it was then (when I had lost about 47 lbs.), so at least I don't have to lose that again! LOL!

I've been involved in rescue for dogs and for cats for most of my life (I'm 57). The 2 cats we have now .... an 8 year-old Maine Coon cat mix and a 2 year-old Bengal mix (our wild child!). I'm also very active in a hound rescue group that focuses on coon hounds, bloodhounds, basset hounds, dachshunds ..... also in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel rescue group (I had a cavalier about 15 years ago and I still miss her terribly!).

Glad to find other dog and cat rescuers!!

Hello everyone. I'm Elayne aka, SassySax. I live in Fl. with my husband and an all black little panther by the name of Max. He's 5 years old and was a rescue when he was just turning two.
I 'm a musician and play alto sax in my church's small orchestra. My husband and I are both amateur radio operators. We are also called Hams for Ham radio. Don't ask me why emoticon I also love to read both fiction and non-fiction. I like dramas, medical mysteries,
anything having to do with animals, angels, and miriacles. I like to read about the lives of the great composers. My favorite is Mozart. Beethoven was also a genius. What is so sad is that they were all poor. Their music wasn't readily recognized and appreciated until after they had died.

Well, enough about that. I have to lose 10 pounds and was newly diagnosed a month ago with Type 2 diabetes.I lost that weight before and Ican doitagain with the support of Spark.

Elayne from the West coast of Fl.

Hi Everyone my name is Colette and I live in the NE area of Ohio and we have always rescued animals, even a bunch of baby opossums that their mom was hit by a car, we took them to a sanctuary. We just adopted a new dog from our local shelter two days ago and we are all getting acquainted (Trixie..a 3 legged whippet mix and Louie our cat) We recently lost our little blind schnauzer, Snowie and we had to find a new friend for Trixie, I really think our new little Annie is for me more so. Yesterday wasn't a good day with Louie and Annie....he more or less told her how he feels about the whole thing, today so far, is a better day. I came across you site on dog cookies and I love all the recipes. I have made a dog cookie called "No fleas please cookies" and mine just love them. I will post it once soon.

I can't imagine living without animals, I did for 5 years and it was rough....my house was cleaner but it was lonely. emoticon

Colette

Thin feels so good and looks good too........

Hi everyone. Berteau is not my given name, but it is the name of a place very dear to me.

I just relocated from Chicago with my rescued little Buddy boy - his mama was a schipperke and daddy - ? - probably a terrier possibly rat terrier. Anyway - I've seen bumper stickers on cars that capture the sentiment in a few words: paw prints surround the words "Who Rescued Who?!"

Years ago I tried sparkpeople but didn't follow through or participate. This time I'm going to give it my all. I'm in California now, it's drought here and way too hot for my 'druthers. Hope to discipline myself to get up earlier to walk Buddy before it gets too bright & hot for comfort.

Laura you are wonderful for taking in Sooty. He will love you more because you rescued him. They seem to know there could have been a worse outcome. They miss their humans and can't understand what happened.

Hi everyone. I am new to Sparkpeople but focused on achieving my goals. My partner and I have recently adopted a domestic short hair cat, Sooty. He is 3 years old and needed to be rehomed after his previous owner unfortunately passed away. He is still settling in at the moment and finding his feet although he loves to play and is currently chasing a cotton reel!

Hello, my name is Kalli. I am new here to SP. I'm not really sure how all of it works yet, so please bear with me as I learn.
As I was looking around, I found this team and thought it's wonderful. I have always loved animals. My kids totally know how to work me and now we have numerous pets. A mixed breed dog (Bridget), a salamander (Oscar), a beta fish (Benny), and 3 cats (Zeus, Arson, and Thuggy McNight Wolf). All of them were rescued. We also have chickens and fostered some baby sparrows that fell out of the nest until they were ready and flew away. Thuggy was abandoned by her mother about a week ago, and is so darn cute even my husband couldn't resist bringing her in. So we are in the process of teaching her and the others how to get along.

Hi, all, I'm Shannon, 42, teacher. I'm a SP returner - lost a bunch of weight about 6 years ago, but wasn't able to maintain through a really bad couple of years, so here I am again. We have six furbabies (for now - trying to talk Hubs into a new kitty, ha ha): four dogs (10-year-old golden retriever (Lady), 5ish-year-old pittie mix (Brutus), 3-ish year old pittie mix (Doc), and 1.5 yearish old we have no idea what mutt (Mousse). Also have two cats - my big fat ginger cat, Oliver and Jackie. All are rescues. It does NOT help that my mom works at a no-kill animal shelter!

Hi, my name is Jean. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats and enjoy their company immensely. I am currently working on losing 60 lbs. It took me years but I finally realized that I am a food addict. I lost my beloved brother in March to cirrhosis due to alcoholism, at the young age of 52. Addictions are a family trait, unfortunately. My pets helped me to get through that terrible time. So now it's time for me to start taking better care of myself.

Well better late than never.. We rescued a Coonhound and she is doing very well... She was 26 and ready to die.. We drove from NJ to NC to pick her up.. We got her back and our vet met us in the office.. he gave her the once over and said we had to feed her about every two hours just got get her a stomach... She was a mess.. but her legs have straightened out and her back because the cage she was in was meant for a cat or puppy 20 pounds.. now she could not stand or sit and was given no food or water if she soiled her cage... So they had her in it 12-15 hours a day and kicked in her little area.. We thought that she may need something done in that area.. no she is fine and the vet laughs cause she has a little patch on her back that her hair is messed up because of it rubbing.. It will not go back to the way it should be.. This is Roxie's story and she is now 68 pounds... We saved one... and she is happy now.. loving the Labs and they love her..

My girls were rescued at 2-3 days old along with their mom and two sisters in Harlingen, Texas. I tell them their mommy was a street-walker but actually we don't know what happened, only that she was starving but took exquisite care of her quads. All 4 girls and Mom were adopted, snow white Katie first, then tri-color Maggie, then Miz Bones. I drove a thousand miles round trip when Bitsee and Peanut were seven weeks old to bring them home to East Texas where they live with Grannie and me, and I teach school to buy them all the treats they can eat or toys they can play with.

Betty, probably why Garfy kicks up a storm. He thinks there is nothing but room in his "great outdoor" bathroom. I have never been happier with a litter. Hope it works for you.

The store didn't have pellets but so far with this mixed with their Perfect Litter the cats are using the boxes - no odor either.
Yes that color does make one think of dirt maybe that 's why cats like it, reminds them of the great out doors.

Betty, I do not flush it. Can't afford a plumber so will not try. I use the pellets, easier for me to clean up off the floor. Garfy is a kicker. I am stocking up this week, it's on sale for $3 off a 14 lbs bag at Petco. I am handicapped and cannot lift the larger size. So glad you don't try to switch cats immediately to a new kind of litter. Some people do and their cats end up peeing outside the box or otherwise act out. They are like us in that they need to adjust to changes. Good luck. I like that I can fill up their two boxes just once a week with 1 bag each. No stink. (I have never noticed an odor coming from the bag either.) Of course I take out their little treasures daily. Cats are clean animals and do not like to have it looking at them later that day. emoticon
PS only drawback is the color. Sometimes it is hard to find the treasures. LOL!!

Linda, today while getting food for my kitties I started to look at what litter my local store carried. I found Blue Buffalo walnut based litter. I thought I'd give it a try. It will probably take about a week to change over completely to this I'll let you know how it goes.

I've read such mixed reviews on Amazon, it seems that people either love it or hate it no in between reviews. I'll make my own opinion once I see how the cats react to it and if it stops Butter's eyes from tearing it will be my go to litter. The color did surprise me, but after all it is made from walnut shells ... duh. I didn't encounter any smell when I opened the bag (a reviewer said it was toxic smelling, don't know what that means) I cleaned the boxes and added a little bit in with regular litter. Only time will tell.

I also read that it is flushable (I've messaged the company) do you flush it? Thanks very much

Betty, I forgot to tell you that the Blue Pellet litter is walnut based. Don't know if it would affect allergies in anyone in your home. My kitty not allergic to it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Yes allergies can be very challenging, but we can only do what we can do - just like people. I'll look into that other litter.

emoticon Betty! It sounds very challenging to have cat(s) with allergies. We have a cat and two dogs. One of the dogs has allergies and we have just started him on injections to see if we can build up his immunity.

Betty, try to get the Lysine gel at the vet's. You can rub on her front paw and she will lick the entire dose off. Both my fur balls have upper respiratory problems that are recurring. It really helps.
I buy Blue Naturally Fresh Pellet litter. It s not a clumping litter but smells great, the kitties love it and I have asthma (this one does not affect me) and am handicapped so it is much easier to clean. I am pretty sure my male cat Garfy had allergies to the other litters I tried because of his eye problems. He rarely gets runny eyes now. Petsmart no longer sells this litter, I get it at Petco. This month it is on sale at $3 off a 14# bag so I load up. Hope this helps you. emoticon

Hi, my name is Betty and I am owned by two adorable rescue cats Page & Butterscotch. Page is about 9 and Butter is 11 or 12. I am also a certified Vet Assistant.

Anyway I spend a lot of time volunteering at a local shelter and last summer helped relocate many feral cats to farms in Illinois. We adopted them out for free so they could have good homes, be outside and have plenty of rodents to munch on.

Butter has allergies and dripping eyes. I have been giving her L-Lysine mixed in her food per my Vet, it seems to help. I've changed their litter many times, gawd bless these girls, they role with the punches as Mom keeps trying different "dustless" litter. You name it and I've tried it. The best result was with Dr Elsey's Respiratory crystal litter which can't be bought in stores. Butter's eyes never dripped when I used this, but this stuff stinks when it is used, you aren't suppose to scoop but I did and the stuff was really gross and OMG the tracking - it was everywhere, in my bed, on the counters, on me if one of them used me for a couch. It is too bad because if it worked better and had odor control I'd still be using it. Now I use "Perfect Litter" by Pet Healthy Holdins, it's pretty good.

I'm happy to have found this Team.

Thank you JANET! She was very special to us and little things that our newest rescue named Allie does reminds us alot of her. While it helps, we can never forget our special Missy. I took Allie for a walk the other day and she's just TOO curious right now to contain herself even on the leash. I've got my work cut out for me - she'd rather walk ME I think! LOL

Hi Carolyn, Thank you for rescuing. I agree that dogs save us as much as we save them. I lost my absolutely favorite dog, a black lab mix named Maggie, in 2012 within two weeks we adopted another black lab mix that we named Molly. She helped us grieve but I still miss my Maggs. The pictured doggie is adorable!!

I'm Carolyn - mom of 3, married 25 years. We LOVE animals!! All 3 of our dogs are rescues: 8/9 yr old Black Lab-Sam, 5 yr old Beagle-Copper, and 1 yr old lab/hound mix-Allie. We lost our sweet Missy (a chocolate lab mix) in November 2014 - she was hit by a car and was MY baby - I miss her daily.
We got Allie a few weeks later because Copper the beagle missed MIssy so much he wouldn't eat or play - nothing. What I didn't realize is when I went to the pound and got Allie, not only was I rescuing her but she rescued me. I was so devastated over losing MIssy.......Allie is alot like her but I think she sensed my grief and was just very loving from the moment I met her she came over and put her head on me to show affection - I still miss my girl Missy daily but Allie has helped me and Copper both find that we can love another sweet girl too while remembering Missy.

My name is Leslie, I am a married 50 year old lady with no human kids, but three rescued pooches. I am very involved with rescue work and believe in fact that they rescue us! Right now we have one of each, 1 permanent, Bandit, 16, 1 Foster 8, Nimbus and 1 Sanctuary, 16 Pretty Bear.
That changes as the fosters come and go.
I retired last year from 30 years in retail and now run my own leadership development business out of the house... which is GREAT....
and not so good... as I am waaaay more sedentary now, thankfully the pooches make me move.

This life is a journey, not your destination!

Hi my name is Darlene.
I have 1 dog who is a rescue dog. I did have 2 but my daughter has the other one.
I found him at Wal-Mart in a shopping cart. They were selling 4 dogs all different kinds
So my grandson and I called my husband and Dominio went home with us that day.
He is such a good dog. He s my companion dog. We do everything together.
He loves his walks we go one.
Me, I'm 52 and have been married since 2002.
I have 5 chilldren in my blended family. Which in turns blesses me with 9 grandchildren with 2 on the way.
Right now I am a stay at home mommy to my dog. :)
I'v been out of work since May 2014.
Looking forward to being a team with you all.

Live every day as if it were your last.

I hope so, but I will have to wait and see. It has been over a year. I do see him pet the dog on occasion, but I am wondering if my husband might be a little jealous of how much attention the dog shows me.

Trust me, that was the longest year of my life. I had to let my husband grieve though then talk him in to getting another dog. This was his first time with a dog from puppy to passing away and I think it hit him exceptionally hard.

I can't imagine a year without a dog. It has been a long time since I have had to deal with more than a week without a dog.

I wish we could know what is in the mind of our dogs. Thank heavens they are resilient and a little love goes a long way with them. Good luck to your husband -- I'm betting your lab will work his way into your husband's heart.

I do not believe that my lab was abused either, but I was wondering if he was in the system for awhile and had not bonded to anyone for awhile. My hubby did not have animals growing up so I am not sure he knows how to bond with animals. He did ok with the two previous labs we had, but when we had to put them down I think that it was extremely hard on him. We waited a year before we got Toby, but I am not sure my husband was ready. To me that was the longest year of my life. I have always had animals around and I missed having someone around. I will have to leave my hubby to work on the dog by himself and hopefully the two of them will become better friends.

My first lab mix was totally focused on me (and also drove my DH nuts). I picked the dog out and was with her all the time because I was teaching and home for the summer. She had been owned and surrendered by a single girl and had some fear of men. She did get over that and accepted my DH (and other men) as DH began to do things like feed and walk her.

The little lab we have now is also focused on me. When we adopted her, she wouldn't leave my side and couldn't get close enough to me. She also pitched a fit if I disappeared. That improved slowly and, again, as DH fed and spent time with her, she isn't so completely devoted to me (close though). She was previously owned by a man but he did not treat her well. I don't think she was abused but she definitely was neglected. I'm not sure if that's why she is so devoted to me or not. In her mind, though, it does seem that I belong to her.

I honestly was looking for one who was a little younger, but I kept going back to the shelter and I would walk Toby each weekend. He was such a sweetheart that I could not help but fall in love and take him home. He has a great personality, but he is totally focused on me. I have never had a dog do that before. He ignores other people including my husband (which he does not like) and I am not sure if this is because he is a shelter dog or if that is just the way he is. Has anyone else adopted a dog that was a one person dog?

Hello, my name is Patty. I have been away for many months, but found the need to come back to Spark People to get back on track. I adopted an 8 year old lab mix a little over a year ago and he has become my personal trainer. We are both looking forward to the time change so there will be more light to go walking when I get home. Unfortunately right now Winter has decided to come in and I do not want to go outside. Not much I can do for Toby, but I will continue my stretching and Yoga to prepare for when we can go walking all the time. I cannot wait.

Hi there! Love the idea for this group! I have two furballs - a 9 year old Pittie named Cheba and a 9 week old Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix named Rumple that we adopted last week (see profile pic). He's insanely adorable and I have just fallen in love with the little guy (despite the potty training sleep deprivation!) And with all of his potty trips, he's become my exercise inspiration.

Look forward to getting to know the group!

Eddy, I love your menagerie. You have a big heart. I would have more animals if my condo allowed more than 2. As it is, the president keeps a close eye on me. She had poison put down to kill the feral s and when I threatened her with turning her in, she called the Humane society. They would put down feral s 100 0/0 of the time. So I TNR ed them and had them sent to a farm. There are too many mean-spirited people in this world. emoticon welcome

Welcome Lori and Linda! You both do a lot of good for the animals. I'm Janet and have two dogs and a cat. All are from the humane society. We have a Weimaraner, age 7 and a lab mix, age 5. We've had both for at least two years, not quite three. Our cat is our first cat. We got him in November and he runs the place.

Hi, everyone :) My name is Eddy and I live in Oregon with my husband and 2 dogs, 4 cats:

Shandi is a Boxer, 9 years old, that I got from a lady who was going to put her down because she is all white. She has Osteosarcoma but has been holding strong for a year now with 5 months of chemotherapy after initial diagnosis and monthly intravenous bone strengthener.

Blue is a heeler mix, 7 years old, that my husband bought off of a homeless man out of a big box of puppies :) Best 25$ ever spent! He is NAUGHTY, lol, but is so loyal.

Boo is an 8-year-old Siamese mix my husband got for me from a farm, but Boo is now 100% a daddy's boy and DH adores him.

Wall-e is a 6-year-old feral kitty I picked up in our neighborhood - I spotted kids holding him (maybe 5 weeks at the time) and went out to investigate..."mommy says we can't give him food or water because we're not keeping him"...said the little boy about the little limp rag in his hands. So I took him. Had an angry neighbor at my door less than an hour later, and she got a piece of my mind followed by a few harmless threats, lol. Wall-e will come around and grace us with his presence on occasion but mainly stays outdoors.

Shula Fantastika is a 5-year-old black/white kitty from a litter of kittens my neighbor's cat had (the cat that was a male...she didn't know the testicles were on the outside, not the inside, and alway assumed her cat was male). Yeah. Shula loves the dogs, Wall-e and Boo, but hates the humans :) So she mainly eats and gives us a piece of her mind most days.

Bruce...my baby. Bruce is 3 years old and is a "foster failure". He had a broken leg that the Humane Society fixed. He is also deaf. I can't put down in words how I feel about him. He is the perfect cat and makes me laugh 100 times a day.

That's my crew!

Lori, as you can see, my user name is feralauntie. My name is Linda and for the last 10yrs I have been involved with the feral community. I have in the past, rescued and 're homed to a farm 13 beautiful kitties. I had for many years taken food to the farm where they were taken . I would go every 4 weeks, and ended up adopting a throw away abused cat. He and I both knew we loved each other, but because of his history, he could not do more that sit at my feet to let me know he loved me. He had cancer all through his body so we only had 14 months together. He died knowing he was loved. His name was KitKat. Welcome to our group. Linda

Hi to everyone. I'm Lori and I live in West Virginia. Along with two older cats that we took in as strays over the years, we recently adopted two feral kittens my sister trapped as part of her Operation Fancy Free program. She has several colonies where she is attempting to trap and then spay/neuter all adults and find forever homes for young kittens. Our kittens were trapped at the same time but did not come from the same litter. The youngest one, who was maybe 7 weeks old, had no problem being held and petted from day one. The other, around 10 to 12 weeks old, has been another story. In the 5 1/2 months we've had him he's come to about 75% tame. Are any of you familiar with feral kittens? It's an awesome experience to reach a point where they trust you enough to allow you to touch them.
Nice to be around other animal lovers who also share a weight loss journey.

Tried water bottle (even though Jackson Galaxcy says not to). I'm too old and too fat to catch him with it. So he will sit still for me to pick him up and remove him to bedroom or lets me chase him in there. He generally waits until I am busy with something before he does these mean little things because he is aware of how slow I am.

Aren't they little terrors when they start acting up like that? I used to have to resort to the water pistol when Pussass used to torment Josie when she was still alive. I was going to change his name from Pussass to Assassin Cat!!

My goofy cat Garfy has been really bad to his sister last couple of days. It is distracting. Since only punishment I will mete out is locked in bedroom while I am gone and a few minutes timeout while I am here, he continues to torment my little senior citizen. Try to tell him I need to be doing other things, but of course he ignores me.

Hi, my name is Debbie and I live in a suburb of Cleveland in the Northeast Ohio Region with my Hubby and our Rescue Sprite! Sprite is a Beagle/Fox Terrier Mix we adopted from Paws & Prayers from Akron Ohio in May of 2010 when she was a couple of months old. Sprite is our first Rescue, and we got her after we lost my Min Pin of almost 16 years. Sprite is the love of our life and brings us joy each and everyday! She is fun, loving and just plain down cute and spoiled rotten.

Hi, Love your kitty's name. Yes, once in a long while you get a little soul mate and they leave you feeling somewhat empty when they go. But, I always have room for 2 pets so I adopt again. They are all so different and great. Thank you for greeting me.

Hi Laurie, welcome to the team.

Terriers can tend to be chewers, my little Maggs could kill a squeaker in a couple of minutes, but my JR Ladybird is very good with her toys and never chews things up.

Drop on over to the monthly chat thread and say hi to the others on the team.

Hope you enjoy it here emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi everyone my name is Laurie and I just joined this team. I have two dogs, they are both terrier mixes. My daughter gave me Pudding as a birthday gift when he was about 5 weeks old. He is part chihuahua and part some kind of terrier. He will be 2 years old at the end of June. We just got Jack a couple of months ago. He is part jack Russell and something else, he is a little larger than Pudding. He was about 9 or 10 months old when he was given to me because his former owners didn't want him anymore because he chews on everything. I think he's teething and just try to keep things out of his reach that would hurt him if he chews on them.

Hi Michelle, welcome to the team.

My two dogs are 9 and 10 respectively and they still think they are puppies the way they play.

You sound like you have a "full house" and they sound very spoiled.

You'll love it here, it's a very friendly team filled with great members

I just got welcome email from two of the team owners right after joining the group. Nice. TY :)
Let's see if I can go in order here. My beautiful kitty is around 14 years old and still acts like a kitten. She was the runt of the litter and won my husband's heart when she sat on his boot when we were visiting in a friend's barn. The friend's family has always just let nature take it's course when it comes to cats, and this little kitty was so unhealthy her fur was very sparse. We took her home with us and took her to the vet. They had to wait until she had enough fat on her body before they could give her her first shots.
Next rescued pet of the dog and cat persuasion, is our basset hound. My son-in-law really wanted one. My daughter bought him one. They ended up not getting along well, but he saw that my husband really liked the puppy, so before trying to sell him, he asked if we'd like to keep the puppy. We said yes. I think he is around 6 years old now. Then there is the little girl who showed up in our yard about five years ago. She looks to be german shepherd and border collie. Such a sweet disposition, even though it became obvious after about a week that she wasn't feeling her best. We had tried finding her owners, but after a week, the pound told us she was ours. At that point the vet finally allowed us to bring her in. They thought she might have something that would cost a lot to fix, but finally decided we could try a medicine that was inexpensive (first anyway), but would very likely turn her teeth yellow. We tried it, it worked, and her teeth stayed white. She is such a happy girl. She and her "brother" and the kitty all get along really well.

Hi Debbie, welcome to the team.

Cancer ..... ugh, it's a terrible thing in humans and animals. My little Maggs died in January this year with aggressive lung cancer, she was 16 and after all she'd been through before I thought she'd live forever.

I hope you like it here and don't worry about names etc, we just go with the flow so to speak here.

Peace and long life - Jules
