I noticed many of the members here are from overseas so I hope you don't mind me joining in!
I have always had a thing for Marine life and really wanted to be a Marine Biologist but my life didn't quite turn out like that. I first went snorkeling off the coast of Cuba in 2009 and I was hooked on reef fish. I bought myself a little reef tank and then last March I went to Dahab in Egypt and completed my PADI Scuba Diver Cert (I did find it quite hard...I am not a natural diver). I went on to do 11 dives there and was amazed.
This summer we went to an Island in the Maldives called Vilamendhoo and I did my Scuba Diver to Open Water upgrade. The house reef on the Island was the most amazing thing I have ever seen, I saw turtles, octopuss, huge Moray eels, sting rays, cuttle fish, lobsters and even a Manta Ray. It really was a dream come true. I also got to snorkel next to a whaleshark!
I don't have my dry suit cert yet so haven't done any diving here in the UK but we are going to Kenya next March for a beach and safari holiday so I will do some more diving there. I have also applied for a place volunteering on the Maldives Whaleshark Research Programme for next summer which is why I joined SP. I really need to lose weight and get fitter because it will be very physically draining!
I have lots of pics on photobucket of the Maldives and my diving in Dahab and am always happy to share if anyone wants to see them.
I can do it. I will do it.
