Hi...I am Jean. I found out that I have small cell cancer in May of last year. I nearly died after the first chemo treatment but they pulled me back and started the remaining three treatments at 75% to which I have responded well to. I am currently considered in remission but I do have small cell and know what that means. I have a doctor's appointment later today and next CT Scan is next month unless something comes up today. I do fight not losing weight as during chemo I lost down to 103. I try to hold around 121 now. (I have dieted all of my life and this is weird to fight weight loss.) When I joined Sparks originally I weighed 183 lbs. The nutrition problems that I face are my sodium remains low (which is bad)...anybody have any suggestions? I look forward to sharing in this forum.

Man I suck!!! I just realized that I didn't tell you that the only thing wrong with my liver is that it is fat. There was no more room on my ass so the fat is moving to my liver.

My home computer is broke so I have to sneak on here when I get a chance at work. I really need to get my husband in gear and get him to fix my flipping computer.

Barb my friend I am loving you and supporting you from afar.

If it helps, I went through the same thing. The first couple of cat scans after my treatments were of my entire torso and they found a bubble in my spleen, a fatty deposit on my liver, and something else I don't even remember what it was now. They told me that a lot of these were normal and as long as they didn't change over the course of the next couple years I would be okay.

So I am keeping a positive attitude for you that your butt just can't hold any more fat and had to put a little in your liver. And DON'T ASK because there are ALL KINDS of WEIRD places your body can store fat. Be glad it is on the inside where you can't see it. Then you'll carry that cute little bubble of fat for the rest of your life as a personal reminder of how your butt used to once be big and fat and no longer will be when you get over this LITTLE hurdle and can get on with the business of getting your life back. (Remember no one is going to give you your lung back so you have to TAKE your life back instead.)

Send me a smoke signal when you get your results. And yes, humor is the BEST way to deal with all this crap!!

Susan

I also MIGHT have a set back. Had my CT scan Tuesday and today I get to have a MRI to check out the spot on my liver. The emotional roller coaster I have been on sucks as I am sure you know. Hoping it is just a fatty deposit. How many other places can on wish for a fatty deposit? My butt is too big and can't handle anymore so it moved to my liver. Trying to be funny to lift my spirits.

Well off to the doctor and the MRI.

Good morning ladies! Hope all is well with you.

I have had a set back, which is why I haven't been posting lately. The doctor diagnosed me Thursday morning with pneumonia. I won't be going back to work until Monday the 22nd. Oh well.

Hard to breathe - like an 800 pound gorilla sitting on my chest!! I did lose another pound though. Only because I have had no appetite not because I am eating right and exercising.

One of my favorite movies lines: "I am just one stomach flu away from my goal weight!"

Anyway I might see you around a little more this week.

I'm on day shift again!!! I'm so excited to have my weekends back...unfortunately my hubs works weekends :( Oh well, I get Friday all day with him.

My girls are almost 2 years and almost 3 months. Sweetest little kids ever!! I love it!

I have one ornery cat named Arthur. He used to have a big (literally big) sister, Morgana, but she passed on last October. She was my sweetheart, and it kills me that she died because we were so busy we didn't catch that she wasn't eating (the food was still going down because of the other cat), so we felt like we could have prevented it. But I'm learning to live with myself over it, and consider it lessons learned and not to be repeated. :)

Barb had a group of us go in with her on a berry order from a farm in Oregon. The berries should be here sometime in the next few weeks! If that doesn't get me eating fruit, I don't know what will. I mean, 20 pounds of fruit in my basement freezer! What am I going to do with that!! Thanks a lot Barb :)

Okay, time to sign off. It's my first weekend off in awhile and I have a lot to get done tonight still to catch up!

Love ya'll
Mary

I took a day of rest last night - no cardio. First day off in 9 days. My black cat loves it when I am lazy, he gets to sit on my lap and cuddle.

Do you ladies have pets? I have a beautiful Blue Merle Cattlehound named Ranger. He is the love of my life (seeing as I have no significant other). I also have 2 cats, a black long hair named Skratchy and a short Gray named Itchy. Yes, there were named after the Simpson's show. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

So today I will do my eight glasses of water and walk on my tread or ride my bike for 60 minutes.

Barb, sometime ago my doctor advised me to start prolonged inhalation. In other words breathe out all the way and slowly (like you were smoking weed) inhale and try to keep inhaling as long as you can. Man that used to make my heart RACE!! I just couldn't seem to do it. My body would panic and I would have to BREATHE inhaling quickly as if I was out of breath. Well today, I tried again. I was thinking I was breathing better, no rice crispie sounds from my chest and no coughing or mucus. Low and behold I could inhale for 30 seconds and I could feel the coolness where my right lower lobe used to be. WOO HOO for me!! I will have to work on that. I think that is because I have been pushing myself on my treadmill!

Onward ladies!!

You are TOO funny!! Yep, my butt shakes too, all on its own. I LOVE that song too. But the BEST part? YOU CAN BREATHE!! HIP HIP HOORAY!! Okay that was not a hip joke it was a cheer!!

I have been trying to trott on my treadmill. I can't really call it running, or jogging, it is more like a feeble trott. But I can hold it for about 30 seconds. I am shooting for a minute. I will really try starting Thursday to work this in. Tuesdays and Thursdays are not good nights for me to do my cardio. They're too busy. So I have to just hurry up and get it over with. I don't get any time to psych myself up to trott for 30 seconds and rest for 2 minutes.

Anyway, have to run (or should I say trott).

Have a GREAT day Barb - and KEEP BREATHING!!

OMG!! I have the day off and I am cleaning the house and the song "Shake, Shake, Shake", don't know if that this what it is called, but it has this island beat to it...Anyway, this song comes on and now I am covered in sweat!! I danced my butt off!! That is how I used to do the house work, but dancing through it and it went by quicker and I burned more calories. Thought I had to give it up because I haven't been able to breath when I did it. THANK THE GODS no one was here to see me do it because my fat butt does NOT look good when it is "Shake, Shake, Shaking". The problem is it doesn't stop when I do!! But the reason I am posting this is because I danced my ass off and I could still breath after I was done. I can't believe how excited that has made me. I just might have to start doing this house cleaning thing more often. NOT!

Anyway, if anyone could understand, I knew it would be you.

Killer, another cool song, got to go sweep

Barb

Once again OMG! I am going to have so much fun getting to know you. We seem to have similar personalities and experiences. That makes it easier to relate.

I smoked at most a pack a day from the time I was 28 to the time I was about 34. Six years at the most. I went through a divorce that although wasn't unexpected still surprised me. It was hard emotionally. Then when it was over I managed to quit because I got really bad bronchitis. It wasn't until 5 years later that I was diagnosed with lung cancer.

I have fluid around my heart and lungs as well but not enough for them to draw off. They did that once around my lungs - took off about 2 cups of fluid. Some of the worst pain I ever had. Felt like a truck driving over my rib cage.

Your blood pressure should come back up too. Mine was about where yours is at maybe even a little lower but I am back to normal now. That will help with your energy level as it comes back.

I too couldn't carry anything let alone my fat butt. My mother who was 76 at the time used to carry my groceries, do my vacuuming, do my laundry - poor mom! She and my middle sister were my blessings. I couldn't have done it without them. That too will come back albeit VERY slowly. It used to frustrate me. I could walk in from the car but give me a bag with a loaf of bread in it and I was ready for a heart attack!!

The exercising thing can wait - can't exercise if you can't breathe - death defeats the purpose! : D Besides your still pretty close to your treatment. It took me about a year or so to get 'back to the gym' type of exercise/cardio. Now I can get on the treadmill for an hour. I started again this week (the treadmill is my favorite cardio) and I started at 30-45 minutes at 2 mph. Five days later I am at 60 minutes at almost a steady 3 mph. I have to drop back here and there when my lungs start to burn a little.

When I was diagnosed I weighed 242 (I was actually considering gastric bypass) and I am 5'4". At the worst part of my treatment I weighed in at 184 ish. I hovered around 190 for awhile and then I went back up to 220 then down to 190 then back up to 220 - Good God STOP IT - I'M GETTING DIZZY!! : D I am working my way down again - this time I am planning, hoping, praying, begging, pleading, bribing my way back down PERMANENTLY - my ultimate goal is 140 but I would take 170 for now until I see how it 'feels'.

I have two boys - Jon is 19 (going to be 20 in September) and goes to college in New Mexico. Incidentally I live in Michigan - how about you? Anyway, he is the pride and joy of my life. I did a DAMN fine job raising that boy - smart, kind, considerate a testament to how much I love him. anyway, he wants to go to Washington DC this summer just he and I. So I told him momma would fly him out and meet him and we could spend an entire glorious week in DC doing whatever his little heart desires. So I want to be in good cardio/respiratory health because I think we are going to be doing a lot of walking - museums, the mall, historical sites etc. I don't want to hold him back but I don't want to sit back either - I want to be WITH him not watch him. So that is my goal for the summer.

Matthew is 11 and just started middle school. He is a MUCH different kid than his brother. He likes waterparks and tropical exotic places so I am going to gear up for that too. Maybe Schlitterbahn (a huge waterpark in Texas), maybe Aruba, maybe Jamaica. Those are all places he has expressed interest in going. So I have to gear up for that too. Although interestingly enough there are a few water related activities I can't do such as snorkeling, diving and sometimes even swimming. The exterior pressure on my chest makes it very difficult to breath combined with the exercising type of movement makes my heart race and I can't seem to control my breathing then.

Your job sounds so COOL! I wish I could do something like that. I have a lovely desk job that literally keeps me at my desk ALL DAY. Nope I don't even print or copy much so there is no reason to get up and walk around. BORING!! Although I love my employer - they paid for my entire treatment and kept my job for me for 9 long months while I was off. I can't complain too much. I get paid well and have excellent benefits so I should shut up. Especially in this economy.

Okay, as for the positive side of cancer....
1. You never have to shave your legs or pits 'cause there is no hair!!
2. You don't have to wash or style your hair 'cause there isn't any!!
3. People are always afraid to tell you how bad you look so they always tell you how good you look today!!
4. Chemo and radiation will make you glow - so you have an instant scary Halloween costume.

I could go on and on. I made a list one day - I'll have to find it. My mom says I should write a book for cancer patients - humorous style - like Erma Bombeck. Great mom, thanks, she's DEAD!!

Take Care Barb and have an EXCELLENT DAY. Oh and get off your butt!!

Susan

I think you are a riot and it is going to fun getting to know you.

I want to start with #6 The positive side of cancer. To tell you the truth, I think I have. I have become the most positive person you could know. I don't worry about anything. I now deal with the "what is" and screw the "what if's". Decided that cancer takes too much of my time already, I will not give it another minute.

1. My heart rate is higher also, around 95-100. I also have low blood pressure, like 90/60. I don't take any meds for it though. On one of my scans they noticed a tiny bit of fluid around my heart, but it's still there but not expanding.

2. I am doing better everyday on being winded, but I can't carry anything or I really lose my breath. I can walk up my steps just fine, but let me carry a small bag up them and I can't breath. Still working on it and will not give up.

3. Shhhh, I am going to tell you a secret, I haven't started exercising at all yet. I really, really want to, but just need to get the motivation to get off my big and getting bigger butt. I went from 165-170 to about 205. Now I am only 5' 1", so thats a lot. But I was comfortable at 165. About 3 years ago I was 250, so I know that I will lose it, it just take me time.

4. I can eat anything and everything. I don't over eat much. I really don't. I really believe that my biggest problem is that I am not moving anymore. I used to watch maybe 4 hours a TV a week, now it's like 4 hours after work everyday. I work in outdoor education, I take kids fishing and show them how to use a bow and arrow, etc.. We were always doing something, now, nada.

5. Both.

Now you asked all the good questions, now I am going to have to dig deep and return the favor.

As for the "Did you smoke?" I return with "Seeing how 65% of people with lung cancer were non smokers or never smokers, does it matter?" I love putting it back on them. Or just "Does it matter?" I love putting it back on them. But yes I did. I did quit before I was dx. Granted it was 3 days before my lung biopsy and 6 days before I got the call from my doctor, but still, I had quit! LOL.

Take Care
Barb

No, no lung cancer forum - 4.5 years later I am still in denial! : D

My pet peeve: when you tell people you have had lung cancer why is it the first thing they always ask "Did you smoke?" Why? Does that mean on some level you think I deserved this and you are trying to find out how much pity I deserve.

Yep, I know all about that sitting on the couch being sick bit. I usually tell people 2006 - that was the year I slept. I didn't have any nausea my anti-nausea medications were so strong I never threw up. At least not from the chemo. But man I could sleep. Usually about 22 hours a day!! I slept through everything. TV shows, chemo treatments, meals. It's a wonder I ever changed out of my jammies!! : D The cats and dog and I were BEST friends, we used to have sleeping contests...of course I'd win hands down every time!!

My mom would come over every day around 1pm and tell me to get up and get moving. So I would get in the shower and take a nap in the shower until she caught on - then she set a time limit on my showers! Geese, like being 10 all over again! : D

One thing you will find about me I have a really strong sense of humor about the whole thing. By the way I type really fast (occupational hazard) and I have diarrhea of the brain so I write long posts.

I have a couple of questions for you about you if you don't mind.

1. Do you have/use a heart rate monitor and do you have a higher than normal resting heart rate. I always feel like mine is insanely high (106 resting). I am scared of cardio because I am afraid that one day my heart is gonna say "That's it, I have had ENOUGH! I QUIT!!" But the doctors all told me that's not gonna happen. We'll see - I told them if it does I will haunt them!

2. So you get winded easily? It does get better - it used to take me 10 minutes or so to climb 17 steps at home to my bedroom. Now I can do it in a few seconds but my heart does still bang away and I am slightly winded at the top. However, that could be due in part to the extra weight I am carrying around thanks to steroids and other odd assortment of drugs.

3. Do you exercise at all? Walk, anything...?

4. Do you have your appetite back?

5. So are you trying to lose weight or just get your lung/heart capacity back?

6. Have you found the bright side of cancer yet?

Okay, plenty for you to think about - I have probably tired you out - told you, I talk A LOT!

TAKE CARE
SUSAN

Welcome!! In a way I was kind of hoping that no one else would join as no one had lung cancer. You are one strong woman. You not only kicked its butt, you wiped the floor with it!!

Now that someone else has joined the group, it looks like I really need to get my nose to the grind stone and get on with getting healthier. I got so used to just sitting on the couch doing nothing but being sick from chemo, that it has become habit. It is a hard one to break. I promised myself that after my next scan (March 16) I was going to start walking daily and really watching what I eat.

Have you been to the Lung Cancer Awareness forum? It is just for people with lung cancer and we all help each other out. It did keep me sane.

Take care.

OMG! I sit here with tears in my eyes Barb.

I am...

a 44 yo single mother of two, a 19 yo boy in college and an 11 yo boy in middle school. 10/31/05 at 39 I went to my doctor for a routine physical and had a chest X-ray. Routine - no symptoms. He called me into his office over HIS vacation and said I had a mass. CT on 11/14/05 confirmed a mass in my right lower lobe, a pet scan at the end of November 05 lit up like a Christmas tree, a needle biopsy on 12/10/05. They kept telling me don't worry, it's nothing, too round, too symmetrical, probably a cyst. 12/14/05: NOPE! Adenocarcinoma - Merry F'ing Christmas! Seven days later I had my right lower lobe removed. They discovered during surgery it had started to progress to my lymph nodes so they took six of those out too. Now I was classified a stage 2B and had to have chemo and radiation. I had every complication you can think of, my medi port stopped working, I had thrush twice (I thought only babies got that), I had hives, esophagitis for which I had to be tube fed through my port didn't eat for 8 weeks, and the granddaddy of them all...bi lateral pulmonary emboli. I had a resident tell me once she had never met a survivor of a single pulmonary emboli let alone bi lateral pulmonary emboli. Last chemo 7/5/06.

Today: Kicked cancer's BUTT - sent it home cryin' to it's momma. Cancer free to this day and just trying to get my life back (seeing as no one will give me my lung back)!

I would be HONORED to be a part of your team and TO encourage you every step of the way!! I need the same myself! Don't want any trophies, any pity, or any fanfare just want to be me and CANCER FREE!!

...a 42 yo of two (20 yo son and 14 yo daughter). March 30, 2009 I called my doctor with the worst heartburn ever. She thought I might be having a heart attack and sent me to the ER. Wasn't heartburn, they saw a mass in my upper left lobe. Had a CT guided needle biopsy done April 3 and was told it was Non Small Cell Lung cancer 3A on April 6. Had my Upper Left Lobe removed April 29 and did the chemo and radiation (kicked my butt) and last scan done Dec 14, 2009 showed NED!!! I am trying to get back to the energy level that I was before, heck I just want to walk without becoming winded. I hope to get in shape so if/when this bastard comes back, I am in shape to fight it again.

And if you have not joined the Lung Cancer Alliance web forum, go to

It helped keep me sane.
