I too have knee problems and I can't do a lot of walking. I know after surgery you will be doing well. I have multiple members of my family that had had this done and my dad is getting his second knee done on the 26th.
Things you can do to help lose and get exercise without using your legs, try getting a couple of soup cans and using your arms. Do circles, up, down, in, out, etc. Anything that you can do with your arms, do it with soup cans or something that weighs around a pound. As you get used to that weight use something that is heavier. The weights that you can buy aren't very expensive and are very good to use. There is also a hand bike that you can use. It is just like using a bike only you use your hands.
Just a couple of ideas that might give you some incentive. If you aren't keeping a food journal, start doing that today. You may be surprised at how much the food you are eating is actually adding up to in calories. I know I was when I first started a food journal. Now I don't go a day without it.

Hi my name is Leslie I am 52 years old and after years of pain, injections, scopes, my dr and I finally decided that total knee replacement is the only alternative left. I will be having both knees done at the same time this summer. Although my goal is to lose 45 lbs by November, I would like to lose 20-30 by this summer so I am in better shape for my surgery. I can barely walk, much less exercise. Everyone I talk to and everything I read says "walk". Well, I can't!! I can barely walk around my house or office, much less do it for exercise. I also do not swim and I can't ride a bike (too many hills) Iknow it sounds like a lot of "can'ts". Can anyone give me some suggestions for weight loss? I really don't eat that much, so I know the weight gain is due to lack of movement rather than excess food. Thank you.
