My food plan is "personalized" and this is what the help says:
"Uses your past activity history to estimate your calorie burn for the day and increases or decreases if you're more or less active then usual."
So, the Food Plan (personalized) takes:
1) your daily calorie goal
2) subtracts food calories as your enter them
3) adjusts calorie burn based on your activity during the day compared to "usual"
I have the old Ultra model and only synch at breakfast. So, I don't benefit from the activity adjustment, but thanks to the SP synch, I do benefit from the calories eaten during the day.
