I will be getting my fitbit tomorrow, and I sure didn't want to give up sparkpeople, but like everyone else, I don't have time to log it two place, plus I'm on WW's and use the regular paper tracker.

I've never had a problem BUT there is a reset...

Maybe you need to reset yours. Also, if you ride a motorcycle or did the first week, etc., it could've been "trained" to expect a lot more jostling. Basically, it just sounds messed up. It's worth a reset (hopefully somebody can talk you through that) and then give it a week.

I wear mine on my bra AND on my waistband, depending on my outfit.

Ok, it seemed I was having to work soooo hard to get my quota of steps in each day.
I remembered when I walked with my pedometer I could get 10,000 steps and not too
much of a push. Now, if I get over 5,000 it is a big deal.
My dh suggested I move my fitbit from my bra to my waist band. I tested it with 50 steps,
and it gave me 26. Now, at the waist I get exactly what I walk. I must come up with some
kind of security to tie to it so I do not lose it.
Just wanted everyone to know this.

Ooo! I've never received any kind of warning. Can you say exactly what it said? That's weird.

MFP is one site.

FB is one site.

We link them so MFP will show that adjustment thinger but apart from that, it shouldn't do anything wrong. MAYBE it said something like, "data will not be duplicated?" You wouldn't want it to duplicate. Just fill in your food and exercise on MFP (and still WEAR your FB--and hold the activity button to start your workouts and hold the activity button to stop at the end of your workouts).

I don't know how they do it but it works VERY well for me. You're probably looking closer than I do! I hope somebody else knows exactly what you're talking about cos I don't want you to have any issues.

OH and don't forget to email/ contact Fitbit if you can't find your issue on their forums cos they're very nice.

Thank you. I was kinda afraid to go back to fitbit and hook up after MFP warned not to do
that. Could'nt figure out why.

You're not missing anything. MyFitnessPal is linked to Fitbit -- not Fitbit to MyFitnessPal, so Fitbit is where you go to get Fitbit into. MFP will show (a "fitbit adjustment" and that's all).

That said, MFP is far superior for tracking, it's just that they aren't getting paid to show you all of Fitbit's stats! :)

From Fitbit's site, click on apps.

There are services (like Sleep Debt, which is Fitbit-content) and other items. Look for MyFitnessPal and link your accounts.

That's how I recall doing it but somebody correct me if I left something out!

I am new to this, please pardon my questions.

I read on a post that Myfitnesspal will receive data from fitbit.
Is this correct? How do I make this happen?

I love Spark people and have been here many years, but I really like
what I just saw over at Myfitnesspal. I will be working in both of these.

Okay, I'm giving MyFitnessPal a try. Going to track my food there instead of here and see how I like it after a week.

I agree completely with Lily. My Fitness Pal (MVP) has one of the best food databases out there, so use it to track food. And as a plus, it sync's with your fitbitt.

Fitbit is my excercise tracker. Use the stop watch to correct for circuit training, bike riding, swimming, etc. simplest way to get the job done. I don't use my HRM (too many excuses not to have it on). I just used "canned" estimates for calories expended here.

Finally I use Spark People for the people.

Thanks to all for the info! I had an old MFP account so I logged back into that and linked my fitbit. I think I will try logging my food on MFP, which links back to fitbit and let my fitbit do its thing on the activity side, following fitbit for calories etc.

I did not know you could use the stop watch feature for activities, just thought that was for sleep so I will definitely try that.

If all else fails I am going to just start tracking everything on fitbit so I am not jumping around on sites. Probably won't be too bad to log food once I get some favorites on there.

Thanks again,.

I don't log things like walking or running. The only thing I only log is yoga class since the FB doesn't track that well, but it tracks walking/running just fine on its own. That's what it is for!

If you can walk 15MPH you are Olympic material. In fact more than Olympic. (4 minutes per mile) Perhaps you are doing an intense walk of 15 minute miles, which is 4 MPH. Yes, best to let FitBit handle logging this!

Oh, sorry, I see you are asking about logging here on Spark. I can't hep you with that.. but again, I'd be careful logging a 15MPH "walk" ;)

I don't have a mathematical solution for you (cos it's above my ability) but Rockman pointed out a good thing:

When you're a) going to bed and waking up or b) starting an activity (where exercise is your intention), you hold the button til the timer starts and then hold the button when you're done (sleeping or with exercise).

For you to walk as much as you do, that's your NORM and yes it burns calories but it's NOT exercise, per se.

I have a sedentary job but I have to move around my building. I clock maybe 1.5 or 2 miles a day (depending how busy) just going from one end of the building to the other (small company).

That is not exercise! When I'm doing kettlebells, for example, it doesn't move as much as my waltzing about the job but it's FAR MORE energy burnt.

To get an accurate reading for that, I rely on a chest strap heart rate monitor. That tells you with the best accuracy (it's strapped to your chest!) and is programmed with your data, so THEN I "correct" that activity on FitBit.

After a few weeks, FB learns you better and better so it will become more accurate.

All of that said, I let FB do its tracking (I do use the activity/ sleep button to better monitor) but I actually TRACK with MyFitnessPal. It's online, desktop and or app. It's far superior (not as pretty but works better and has a better database) than SP.

I love SP for support. I love FitBit for its accuracy (once you've got a good foundation for it to use as cypher) and I love MFP (which conveniently syncs to FB).

Hope any of that helped!

Looks like Raul and I posted at about the same time -- and use similar techniques for tracking actual exercise.

It is too bad that there is not a way to automatically count flights done on a stair-stepper...

I do not think that using the stair stepper function for steps is going to be accurate since FB counts stairs as inclines of over 10 feet.

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? I was keeping track of my steps on SP for a while, but I no longer do so. I track my steps, weight, and sleep on Fitbit. When I take a walk for intentional exercise, I often will use the start/stop feature on Fitbit - and then I will take that data and add it to my cardio exercise on SP. As far as food goes, I actually now log it on MyFitnessPal which links to Fitbit and compare my calories in/out there. However, if Fitbit and SP ever start linking up, I will definitely go back to SP for tracking food. Anyone listening out there in Fitbit/SP land? I know there have been other posts about this out there......it would be awesome.

Have you tried the Activity feature on your FB yet? You hold down the button on the unit until the stopwatch begins, do your power walk and when completed, hold down the button on the FB until it reads STOP. You then can go to your FB page and click on the ACTIVITIES link to see your activity in graph form. This is the only type of activity that I log onto my SP page (other than my total steps for the day).
I guess what I am saying is that I use the SP's fitness page to only log in actual cardio activities, i.e., walking, workout machines, etc.
With regards to the floors climbed I log that information on the NOTES section of my fitness page on SP.
Here is my SP fitness tracker information for July 12:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_tracker.a
sp
?id=ROCKMAN6797&dte=7%2F12%2F2012

Truth be told, I use both sites to track, I love the FB site for tracking fitness data while I love the SP page for tracking food data. I can seem overwhelming but after awhile it is actually pretty simple.

I hope I have answered some of your questions and not certainly not clouded them!

I really grow tired of the tracking in general. I only track my weight, sleep and steps on FB.

So, nothing is double entered on SP (other than weight, which is monthly for SP and daily for FB).

The SP calorie ranges are based on your input on daily activities. That includes a lot of your daily steps and stairs from the FB. So, I enter only my "fitness" activities on SP, e.g. a walk has to be at least 10 minutes in duration.

Let me preface this with the fact that I have only had my fitbit for about a week and I am strugglnig with which site to track everything. I am not a big fan of the fitbit site but if I use SP am I logging my activity correctly?

I was wondering how everyone tracks their fitbit data on Spark People? I have been doing the step tracker and the mileage tracker but I am wondering if I am double dipping or if I am doing it right.

For example if my fitbit says I walked 8,000 steps, and 4.00 miles per day I log the steps in the step counter, and log the 4.00 miles as 4.00 miles over 720 minutes, (Figuring I do the 4 miles over about a 12 hour period), in the mileage tracker. This typically gives me a 2 MPH rate for the walking and comes up around 3,000 calories burned.

Additionally, what do I do if I go for an intense walk for an hour and walk about 15 MPH for that hour? Should I deduct that mileage from my daily total and add it separately?

As far as the stairs I am adding these as a “stair stepper machine” as it’s the only thing that comes up when you search for “stairs”.

Anyway, for various reasons I have opted to stay on SP instead of tracking on both sites but would like some input how others are adapting to SP with their fitbit?
