Hi,
I'm at Stage 5 with my GFR at 5, I start dialysis tomorrow with the hopes of doing home hemodialysis in the next few weeks. I've been on the transplant list a little over a year. My transplant dietitian has recommended I lose weight, but have had no energy. Hoping to gain it back with dialysis, then I can get on a better exercise routine. emoticon

I thought my labs would be better this time, but they were the same. My filtration is still stage 3 but there is no protein in my urine and my potassium, BUN and creatinine and sodium are all normal.

Marcia,
I too would like to know about phosphorus, since labels don't put this. I guess a dietician is the best bet.

Would the endocrinologist's dietician be able to accommodate renal as well?

Hi all. I found out about 2-1/2 yrs ago that I was at state3 of CKD. I actually found out by accident because my primary was running all types of tests and was not giving me straight answers until I was checking out an EOB and had no clue what the "Diagnosis: CKD 3" meant. Needless to say, when I started refusing the tests telling her I thought they were unnecessary, she explained them more then sent me to a nephrologist. My nephrologist is the best, she looked over all my BP, etc meds & changed what needed to be changed because some were not "kidney friendly." That helped quite a bit.

Unfortunately, when my boss retired back in Feb, I lost my insurance & when my scripts ran out couldn't afford them & most programs where I live were not very helpful, so I was w/o my meds for about 5-1/2 months. Gratefully, I'm back to work full time w/insurance & am back on meds, especially after the hospital stay. The hospital actually sent me home w/meds for free for the first 30 days! I'm back seeing my nephrologist (she didn't fuss too much) but my kidneys took a big hit. I have to really work on my diet, but still do not have a great idea of what to do, how to check the potassium or phosphorus in everything. Most labels don't list those. Any suggestions?

Blessings, Marcia

Hello everyone, I want to say I am stage 3 and holding for several years. Each stage of CKD is serious, don't let any one tell you stages 1 and 2 are not serious, they are serious. One of you said your GFR was 29, that is serious. I totally believe Diet is very important in CKD. Always check with your Nephrologist as to what your GFR Is. always ask for a copy of your Blood Work, so you can look it over any time you want to.
As for how much Protein or Potassium or Phosphorus you should be eating your blood work will tell you how high or low it is.
I being in 3rd stage do have to watch my Protein, my dairy, and my Phosphorus. Of course we all need to watch our Sodium. I am limited on all of this. Its all in what your blood work says.
I strongly believe in a Renal Dietitian, ask to see one. Ask and I will answer if I can.

My last test showed me in stage 2 at 72.

However, I began to show symptoms of stage 3 with leg cramps,
extreme tiredness, excessive swelling, etc.

I dropped down from meat daily to no meat most days of the week,
the leg cramps have stopped (still eat limited protein). I have more
energy and less swelling, so I plan to continue with how I am eating
now for a while.

go to davita.com and you can get lots of good info about kidney disease. A GFR of 29 is late stage 3, getting close to stage 4. You should probably only eat about 45 grams of protein a day. As for the potassium you don't need to worry about that unless your'e on dialysis unless your doctor tells you it's high and it probably isn't. Anyway the site I mentioned will give you all the information you need. I see my neph about every 4 months but that's because I am recovering from acute renal failure.

Fisher011, you need a Nephrologist.

I have been seeing these eGFR numbers but the Nephrologist that I won't go back to, told me I was doing well. My rate is 29! I have an appointment with another Neph Dr., but not until Aug. 20.

How much protein should I be eating? How much potassium? I guess I need a dietician too.

I keep bouncing back and forth between stage 3 and 4 with a
GFR of 29 or 30. I developed acute renal failure from toxic shock syndrome with multi system failure, was on dialysis for three months and was left with ckd. I have been fairly stable off dialysis for close to 2 years now.

I have a chart I look at for reference on the GFR. My Nephrologist has all my blood work written out and calculated so I just look to make sure we are on the same tract. and we always are the same.
When I went to see her 2 weeks ago, my GFR had dropped from 52 to 46 and I was so upset with my self. Im still 3rd stage but I don't want it to go down. but I had done some different eating so I should not have been surprised. Im back on the track now eating better, but I just cant seem to lose this weight I gained when I was on the Predisone for 3 months. emoticon this is what I feel like sometimes.

Hi - I'm sorry to tell you that I don't know how to calculate it - the nurses at our kidney clinic always do it for my hubby. Our family doctor referred us to the Nephrologist, who is all we see now as it relates to my hubby's kidneys (and our daughter's).

Good luck - Have a great week! emoticon

I am in stage 3 as I said before. My GFR is 46. Six months ago I was tested and my GFR was 39. I used my creatinine numbers to calculate these numbers. I used the calculation chart at DaVinta.com.
When I first tested at 39 my creatinine was 1.4
My newest numbers are 46 and my creatinine is is 1.22

I am confused on how this was calculated! Am I calculating correctly?
Any advise/help would be appreciated!
It's one thing to say I have stage 3 & know what I'm talking about-BUT I don't!

I just found a primary care Dr.- but she may speak English, but I feel she doesn't understand my concerns, because she isn't addressing them!
What kind of Dr should I be shopping emoticon for?

As of today earlier I am stage 2, he said my gfr was back up to 60 and I have protein in my urine and he wants me to start a diet, but I have to research which ones, the one the hospital offers is Ideal weigh I think they call it but since I have kidney problems not sure I can do it, he was going to talk to the dietican about it and I have yet to see the Hy Vee dietician she never calls me back, after I had to cancel that one time, so might have to go to another Hy vee store.

Great, every one let us know how you are doing. I am on a team on Facebook and the guy who started the team. Had one kidney removed because of cancer. he was in stage 4 for quite a while. He started getting very strict with his Renal Diet. his last visit to his Neph. he is now in stage 3, i think this is awesome. I so believe Diet in so important in this disease.

GFR - glomerular filtration rate is the best test to measure your level of kidney function and determine your stage of kidney disease.
www.kidney.org/kidneydisease/ckd/knowGFR.c
fm

Stage 1: GFR Greater than 90 milliliter/minute is CKD with normal or high GFR
Stage 2: GFR = 60-89 ml/min is mild CKD
Stage 3: GFR = 30-59 ml/min is moderate CKD
Stage 4: GFR = 15-29 ml/min is severe CKD
Stage 5: GFR less than 15 ml/min is end stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure

During the first two stages of kidney disease a doctor may recommend limiting protein in the diet, controlling blood sugar and blood pressure levels, stopping smoking, exercising and practicing overall healthy habits.

In stage three of chronic kidney disease a visit to a nephrologist (doctor who specializes in kidney care) is recommended. In addition to following the advice given for people in stages one and two, the nephrologist may also refer the patient to a dietitian for additional guidance in getting proper nutrition. Some people begin to feel some of the effects of kidney function loss in stage three.

By stage four people with kidney disease usually visit their nephrologist every three months for testing. During this stage the nephrologist will explain the treatment options for kidney failure, including dialysis and transplantation.

At stage five the kidneys no longer function well enough to keep a person alive, so dialysis or a transplant must be done.
