Just got the official news (figured, but now it's official), that my kidney is indeed a perfect match for my brother's.

Got the news just when the scale says I have now lost all the weight I gained over the holidays (hospital says they'd still like me to lose 10 lbs, but should be completely doable by July 4th, have a wedding that day in Ohio, will fly from there to Boston for surgery).

Now I just need to figure out where best to recover and who's going to help me...my poor mother is going to have her hands full with both her "kids" post op, but I have at least one aunt and probably 2 (one aunt who said she would, volunteered the other in absentia) who will lend a hand, so we should come through it with flying colors emoticon

Thank you BohemianCat, and happy to hear your good news, I don't think it should ever feel wrong to share positive health news emoticon

So back atcha...brother is out of the hospital and had a terrific day today, after a great night's sleep. Somehow figured out a good position to sleep in despite the new port in his neck.

AND his regular dialysis place says his arm port seems to be healing perfectly and ready for use...hospital that fixed the fistula said it could be 1-2 weeks. So we'll have to wait for the official go-ahead from them, but still, it's a positive sign.

I gotta tell you all, I'm almost ready to take my own kidney out with a spoon and just FedEx it to my brother. Sorry for the graphic image, but it's easy to not even really think about it when things are going well and my brother's at the gym or hanging out in town with his friends, but then something like this happens and I feel the need to hit the fast-forward button. I had told them summer was the best time for me, and it is, and they still want me to lose like 15 pounds, which should give me plenty of time to do just that, but then stuff like this happens and I feel like I should fly home next weekend. Bah!

Sorry about your brother. I will pray for him.

Not to steal your thunder, but I am better. My creatinine and BUN are normal. The eGFR is still low, 31, but up from 26. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium are all normal too! Woo Hoo!

Bah!!!!

Brother is in the hospital.

Fistula got clogged, went in for surgery to fix and couldn't due to blood clot and embolism...so the poor kid had to get a catheter in his neck to get his dialysis.

IN HIS NECK???? That just sounds wrong...

Has any one else ever heard of this happening?

As bad as I feel for my poor brother, I feel horrible for my poor mother, who is physically and emotionally exhausted...her birthday's coming up in the next few weeks, I'm racking my brain trying to come up with a great birthday gift for her to give her some kind of respite from all she's going through with my brother.

My dad is there and so is an aunt, so thank goodness for that, but she's the one at the hospital with him...and apparently the staff at the hospital isn't as patient-friendly or efficient as she would like, long waits with no updates.

He's due to be released at some point tomorrow, so I guess this will pass, but geez...I just keep picturing my poor lil' bro getting tapped like a keg in his neck. What a wretched turn of events.

Thank you to all for letting me vent, not that I'm even the one who needs to vent at this point, but I'm hating the fact that I'm not there to comfort my brother and mother emoticon

I got my labs back today - while things are still in the "normal" range - they are slightly elevated since my colonoscopy. My last test in Sept 12 : my creatinine was .88 is now .97. I will still take it! My bun is 15 and was 14 and my GFR is 61 and in the fall it was 70.

Not bad!

I have some work to do though - My white blood count is low and my cholesterol is 5 points high... I only had high cholesterol once and I got it down in 7 weeks... I am going to work hard to repeat this!

I will be getting my blood work done again in 8 weeks!!

I went to my Nephrologist on Tuesday Dec. 11. I am doing good. Kidney function is 51%, my Phosphorus is still high, so i am still taking Foresonal , a binder for Phos. My vitamin D is still low( Slightly) so continue on Vitamin D3 of 5000 units a day.
Parathyroid hormone, is elevated but with in acceptable range. I'm still anemic so i will continue medicine for this. My Blood Pressure was 191/102 that day, and i had a headache. I had to rest in the office for a while. So she upped my Cardizem again for high BP.
i found out by way of internet, Looking up all my meds and there symptoms, 3 weeks before my appointment, with her, I had all the symptoms of this one BP med i was on, and i had been feeling bad for 2 years now, My former Neph. just did not listen to me. So i quit taking it, all these symptoms went away, i could not believe how good i felt. also another med was causing my heart rate to be rapid, so she took me off of this. I am to keep a record of BP for 4 weeks and let her know how it is, if still up i will go back in Jan. if not up i will go in 4 months. I say i am doing good because every thing has NOT CHANGED THAT MUCH, so that is good, except BP. It has been good since Dec. 11.
So be sure and check your meds, never stop a medication until you check with your Dr. first.

Im starting to take control of my life today. I will take care of me, love my self., be good to my self, I am strong, i can do this.

good news from my doctor, results of my blood test today shows that my GFR has improved to 50 (from a low of 39) and my creatinine is now down to 142 (from a high of 177) looks like diet and loosing weight is helping. i don't need to back for another month.

Thanks Jen, i did the water thing, still painful, i think i will be going back next week to Dr. I still cant walk.
I am sure every one has read about the Arsenic in the Rice, i was reading a article about it and it amazes me all the things that have Rice in them. So manny different foods, with Rice. Please read labels and then make your own decisions about what you can eat. There also was a recall on some beef from Walmart Stores, i never eat any meat from Walmart. So watch out for this and the Peanut Butter .

I did see the popcorn lung info.

Freeze a bottle of water.. and then roll back and forth 10 - 15 mins a day.. it works! I had a heel spur and this is the only thing I did to remove it.

Went to Dr. last week and i have a Plantar Fasciitis and a Heel Spur and it is very painful, i have been limping for over a month now (hoping it would go away) I am on cortisone so i will swell up like Puffin Stuff and this stuff makes you hungry for any thing. I was on it before and my Dad said i believed you would eat a greased rock, i felt like it.
A Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by Arthritis, which i have, Going barefoot which i do in the house all the time with my socks on.
the meds have helped a lot and Dr. told me to get a heel pad, which i did, but today is first day of trying to walk on it and still painfull. So now time to rest it a bit. emoticon

Has any one seen the article on the microwave popcorn. The man who ate a least 2 bags a day, and now has a rare disease and he won millons of dollars in a law suit.
I can not stand to smell microwave popcorn let alone eat it. But that is me. It has aleays been stated that microwave popcorn is not good for us, so please if you eat it, please reconsider.

GFR-Stages of Kidney Disease
Stage 1--90--- ml/min or higher
Stage2--60-89---- ml/min
Stage3--30-59--- ml/min
Stage4--15-29--- ml/min
Stage5--less than 15 ml/min
My Neph. explained it like this 4th is dialysis and 5th is transplant.

I was in stage 3 when diagnosed i did drop to 26 one time but i brought my GFR up to 46 to 3rd stage and still holding. It can be done with diet at least this is how i did it and walking for my exercise .

Those are the facts on how we got here, yes. But, that doesn't really answer my question - do our team leaders want us to update the same info in 2 different threads?

I'm a little confused on our threads. What is the difference between this thread and the "Lab or Blood Work" thread. I've always updated the other one with this info - are we abandoning the other one?

Seems like a duplicate to me....

Here's the update I just put in the other thread:

Got my blood tests from 8/17 testing:

eGFR 53 (stage 3)
Potassium 3.6 (normal range 3.5-5.2)
Creatinine 1.14 (0.60-1.40)
Sodium 144 (135-145)
Phosphorus 3.0 (2.5-4.5)

So, even though I'm not eating a good diet and not exercises, my #s are better than they've been in a while - go figure.

I had some blood tests done just before I left for Mich - I called today and asked them to send me a copy of the results, so I should have something to report next week.

I saw my new neph today - she is VERY pleased with my stats and what I am doing to maintain my CKD. All of my numbers are good and holding at stage 2. The BUN is within normal limits but for me is high. She told me to drink more water... I said hmmm... I drink almost a gallon a day... maybe I was dehydrated when they did the test... fasting an d all that - I tend to wait to drink a lot until after the test... grrr!

I go back in 2 months.
Very different from my neph.. made me get undressed to do a full body check and urinalysis. She went over everything with me. Did not have that done before either. I LIKE HER.

So I want to encourage all of you find a neph you trust and LIKE. Who will make you do things you dont want to do - tests, getting undressed..ect. They are good ones.

Hi, every one, well i had my visit with my Neph on the 25, this past Wed. I really am going to have to get to work.
GFR was 45 down from 52----Creatine is 1.23----rage is o.60to 1.10 so its high
Sodium was 142---range is 136-145 so i have to watch this and i do so i cant understand this, but will have to be reallt careful.
Phosphorus was up 2 points but under limit, so pretty good there.
Ferritin is low, so i am on this to get my level up, i knew i was anemic, i could tell by the way i have been feeling.
Parathyroid is high--67.2--range is 15.0to65.0.
Uric Acid is 5.5 ==range 2.4-5.7 so its up
So i have some work to do.

I got my labs back:

I am still maintaining my stage 3 CKD at stage 2 readings However: my BUN is too high! Too much protein in my system... ugh!

My GFR is at 67 woohoo! and my creatinine is down 0.07 points... from 1.0 to .93
My phosphorous is 67.

I got lab test results about 10 minutes before I left for Michigan. I don't remember the exact #s, but my eGFR is in the mid 50's - down from 63 - and my creatinine is toooo high. My sugar binge is doing it's damage.

Lyn, sounds like you are going in the right direction, with your Dr. Only one thing bothers me why wouldn't she have on record your last test. Dr. usually keep all tests reports to go back and check. I had to learn the hard way. Remember you are the captain of your ship (body). Each time you see any Dr. ask for a copy of your blood work. After its your life and your money.
Claire is right on the cranberries, just be careful. go to the DaVita .com site they have lots of foods listed with everything that is in them.. If you live near a DaVita Dialysis center you can even go there and they will give you litature and classes on CKD. Cranberry juice is not to bad but watch the grape juice its loaded with potassium.334mg of potassium. emoticon

Yep - protein in your urine is one of the first symptoms noticed by the medical community.

And watch the cranberry choices you make; dried fruit is pretty high on the "don't eat it" list as the drying process increases the potassium in the fruit. And potassium levels have to be monitored closely as it is very destructive to kidneys.

Sounds like you're working hard to do the right things - it can get so frustrating figuring it all out.

I loved my kidney at my doctor's apt yesterday ...

Been having a colitis flareup past 4 days (getting better now) so went to doctor yesterday and she ordered more blood work (waiting to hear from hear)... I asked especially that she take a urine sample (they take blood but not urine regularly from me strangely) and test "normal" things they test for in urine regarding kidney function, but specifically asked her to test for "microscopic amts of microalbuminuria" which I learned to ask for in the article in the SparkPeople Health Conditions section under "diabetic nephropathy" (kidney disease in big words); "Small amounts of albumin show up in the urine 5 to 10 years before major kidney damage happens." My bs levels have been out of whack and very high past 4 weeks.. getting them and it back in control, but have had large weight gain & increased water retention due to recent changes in meds mostly, I think. But I am little nervous because the enormous changes in healthful eating since I found SparkPeople on May 24 SHOULD be helping more I think!! I'm urinating at regular frequency, but she instructed me to add 1/2 of my current diuretic in the afternoon for a couple of days to see if my body will function more normally with this retention issue. Well.. I grabbed cranberry everything yesterday after I left her... don't really think diuretics are all that good for our organs... (((sigh)))) I definitely LOVED MY KIDNEYS addressing this with my doctor yesterday.... (hmmmm... she seemed a little puzzled when she couldn't find ANY urine test reports since I began seeing her January 2011... ) and wanted to share that I did so especially because of the wonderful information I get from CBEVNOW and this team!!!!! You are alllll
emoticon and I thank you ever so much! emoticon emoticon

emoticon emoticon !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw my primary care physician the other day and he took blood for his standard tests and I got the results. Wow! In my last entry (below) my eGFR had gone down significantly. Well, in the month since then I've been working hard on my exercise and diet. These things do make a huge difference.

My eGFR is ****63*****!!!!! My A1C is still high, but has gone down, too.
Glucose, Creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium, protein, albumin are all normal!! Even the nurses were patting me on the back. I feel real good today; now I have to keep it up.

I saw my nephrologist for the first time in 6 months and I'm not surprised that my numbers have gone downhill.

In August, my eGFR was 56 - now it's 46.

What is find interesting is my creatinine level - the normal range has been changed according to my lab sheet. It used to be 0.57-1.0 on my lab results and my level has been high since I started having it measured. Now my lab sheet shows the normal range as 0.60-1.40 - a HUGE change at the top end so now, even though my creatinine is essentially the same, I'm now normal.
emoticon
My glucose serum level (not an A1C) has gone way high - from a high normal of 91 to 105! Ouch! My sugar addiction is killing me.
emoticon

Edited to add: I looked at DaVita and they are showing the creatinine range as 0.8 - 1.6 so who the heck knows.

I understand from one of my British friends on Facebook, they are coming out with a booklet, similiar to the AAKP Nutrition Counter. It sounds better then this one by AAKP (sorry). it is supossed to list every thing and will be colored coded. The color codeing sounds good. She said it would be ready in May, i am hoping to get a copy.

Wendy, would this help you, or have you heard about it.

I got good results from my nephrologist!
All my numbers are good and in the normal/good range.
Kidney function is steady.
So I am being a good girl!
Next appointment in a year with a lab in six months.

Just need to get my weight down. Maybe I can get off some of my meds
in the near future! That is one of my goals.

I cant remember if i told our team but when i went to the Neph. in Jan. 25 my GFR was 52 up from 44.. Woo Hoo on this.
My Glucose was high-101-- range is 70-99- so i need to watch---so i got in the mail the blood glucose meter and every thing that goes with it. I got it last week and have not even read how to use it yet. I guess this is to keep check. Dr. must have ordered this, because i didnt.
Uric acid still high, so i have to continue meds for this.
I have to watch Sodium, on the border again, and i am so strict about this, who knows why.
Phosphorous 4.1-----RANGE 2.5-4.6
CKD is a every day challenge and dont let any one tell you its not. Dont let people make you feel guilty, for being tired or hurting, or slower some days.

Aria,
I hope that is not the case. I too hate for results but I have learned the hard way to not to try to LOOK at my CD's, printed reports, ect on my own because I always tend to THINK or READ the worst.. and then I wind up LOL at myself for trying to figure it out... and then the doc gets mad at me too!

I will keep you in my prayers hoping and praying for the best.

ok, so I went to the Urologist on Monday.... and he ordered a new UltraSound -- as PCKD is checked yearly for cysts if there had been none showing the year prior.... and my Neph said she thinks they were "over looking" cysts cuz they were small.... (as she examined the Ultrasounds after the radiologist gave her the report)....

Well, The Urologist told me to get a copy of the CD Right then and there so that I could take it to my neph this time... and call back in a week to see results from him once he got the reports....

So I was a bad girl and I popped the CD into my computer.... and they were measuring a clear/fluid filled spot on my kidney... 2.** cm... by 1.78 cm on the Sag and then 2.**cm on the Trans-- now this could be my Renal Artery but my gut says it probably isn't based on location... (and looking at "Healthy" Ultrasounds online... mine looks different).

All this being said... I think my worse fears may be realized... and I hate waiting for results!!!

Did any one read the Parade in Sunday's paper? A very good article about donating a organ, particularly a Kidney. Its all about the Kidneys. I saved it so my husband could read it, he doesnt think there is any thing wrong with me, denial on his part, i dont know. If this could be copied it would be great to hand out at church or any organizations you belong to.

Sorry to hear that this diagnosis still exists for you.

On Wendy's blog she said she got some bad medical news. She didn't say what that was, though. Let's all send her some 'we're here for you' thoughts!

Thank you Jen this is good to know. Even though you dont want to have CKD, you do know your body, and I'm so glad you kept up the fight. Just think what might have happened to you if you had not followed your instincts. emoticon

emoticon UPDATE: I do have 3rd stage chronic kidney disease.

If any one ever questions whether you have kidney disease or NOT... keep track of your creatinine levels. If they change at all - YOU have chronic kidney disease!! If you did not have ckd then your numbers will be consistent.

Recently added Osteoporosis to my lists of issues and figured out that I probably fractured my back when I was visiting my daughter several months ago. I thought I twisted it badly, but the research says height loss is directly attributable to spinal column fractures - and I've lost an inch. My back is still very tender.

My A1C is still in the pre-diabetic range but I'm just barely under the full blown diabetes diagnosis.

Other than that, I'm in a good place.

High Blood Pressure and Kidney Disease
High blood pressure makes the heart work harder and, over time, can damage the blood vessels throughout the body. If the blood vessels in the kidneys are damaged they may stop removing wastes and extra fluid from the body. The extra fluid in the blood vessels may then raise blood pressure even more. Its a dangerous cycle. High Blood Pressure is one of the leading causes of Kidney failure. Every year high blood pressure causes more than 25,000 new cases of kidney failure in the United States.
The kidneys play a key role in keeping a persons blood pressure in a healthy range, and in turn can effect the health of the kidneys. High blood pressure can damage the kidneys and lead to Chronic Kidney Disease. So as said above its a dangerous cycle.
More on High BP coming and how to lower it.

Saw my primary care physician today. Took a bucket of blood for all the tests!

I'm interested in hearing what my A1C is (tells ya what your average blood glucose has been for the past 3 months or so) as I've been pounding sugar down. Last time I was tested, I was in the pre-diabetic range.

The new Physicians Assistant was impressed when I handed her my stack of papers: a list of needed prescriptions; a list of my current meds; a list of discussion topics; and a spreadsheet with all my blood test results from the past couple of years. (If I don't have a discussion list, I forget half the stuff.)

I also got a shot of steroid in the bum to treat a skin condition that hasn't been responding to topical treatment. I, of course, keep smacking that spot against the counter!

I went to my proctologist (yeah yeah hit me with your best joke I can take it) for a routine consult and learned I can't have colonoscopies any more - the stuff that cleans you out is phosphate based. Her suggestion "check back in a year and see if there is an alternative yet" isn't very encouraging! Due to prior issues, I should be having the procedure every couple years, so I've got some risk in doing nothing.

A couple years ago I had a standard stress test and I failed it. I was referred to a cardiologist who did all these nifty tests and said that there was nothing wrong but I was one of those people who gets a false positive on a standard stress test. So, the only way to check my cardiac health is for him to do all these nifty tests. Given my family history (both my parents died of heart disease and my brother has already had 2 'heart incidents' as he calls 'm) and the pre-diabetes, the cardiologist wanted me to come every couple years for a look see.

Now, with the kidney disease, I can't have those cardiac tests because of the dyes and whatnot used during the tests. I'm seeing the cardiologist next week to get some recommendations going forward.

My last visit to Nephrologist was July 25th, I did good, about the same as last visit except a few things improved. GFR 44 up from 38 yea. Sodium 139-range 136-145. Potassium 3.6 range 3.5-5.1. Calcium 10.1-range 8.5-10.3. I have to watch this also. Creatinine 1.21- range0.60-1.10 this was high. my Hemoglobine, and Hematocrit was low, no surprise its always low.Protein 7.1-range 6.4-8.3. Uric acid 5.7-range 2.6-6.0 i have to watch this, as it can cause Gout. Phosphorus 3.9-range 2.8-4.1 close to high so i have to watch this, i have always had problems with high Phosphorus and i watch this so carefully. There was out comes for other tests he always runs, but they were good.
In having CKD we always have to be alert as to what we eat and what is in our food, if we want our kidneys to be as healthy as they can be, with CKD.
My Vitamin D is still low and so i am still on 5000IU a day of D3, and i take my Renal Cap every day.

with three surgeries this year - I do not want any more surgical procedures, unless my life is in danger. I am still recovering from them, as some days I am still in a lot of pain.

If they cannot determine my status through blood tests and symptoms - then I will continue to protect the kidney function I have. If they determine that I do not have kidney disease through tests and symptoms then I will do what I have learned to take care of my kidneys.

I do not have an update yet team - DR wants to retest in 3 months and she wants time to talk to my nephrologist and old doc. If they want to do a biopsy on my kidneys I have already decided I am not going to have this procedure done.

My concern is that one test out of three every year shows stage 3 kidney disease...so my question for my doc... was how can my kidneys not be sick? but I will gladly take not having kidney disease.

Thank you all for your kind remarks and support!

I am going to wait to see what Doc has to say once she speaks with my nephrologist and gets my medical reports/file from my old doc. I am not going to do anything drastic. I am still going to follow the dialysis diet I have been on. I am going to keep on loving my kidneys. I will continue to lead this team. People without kidney disease are in stage 1, if indeed I am in stage 1.. I will JUMP for JOY. But that means that I had an acute episode of kidney failure and I can easily be back to stage 3. Acute kidney failure happens due to trauma or too many Nsaids and can be reversed. I was never told what type of kidney disease I have...had...whatever. But I will find out now. I am going to get answers.

I will keep you all posted.
In the mean time - Love your kidneys!

The upside is that you've been living a very very healthy lifestyle and eating a great diet.

It will be great news if you've been misdiagnosed, Jean. I sure hope that's the case!

All professionals from major hospitals, dr. etc says kidney disease is not curable. I know we can improve our GFR and other things with diet, so Jen if you are cured some one made a big mistake in saying you had kidney disease, is this what you are saying . You are cured Or you never had this disease. I think you need a second opinion. I dont think a Nephrologist would say you had this disease if you did not, and your blood work would and has told you this (right).
My family dr. is the one who told me he thought something was wrong with my kidneys, and then tests, and sent to Neph. and then i changed Neph. and same tests and almost same results.
I really believe i would get another opinion remember this is your body. Please keep us informed. Prayers for you,
Caroline

Oh Jean, please keep us posted. Something similar happened to me when I was first diagnosed with Lupus. For over a year, I had stage 3 kidney disease and then a new set of tests indicated I only had had a severe kidney infection.
Stay positive Sweetie, let's hope for the best for you. At some point in your past, you had problems. There are such things as miracles. There are also such things as mistakes. Who knows? But I will hold you in my prayers for the best.

I met with my new doctor last week - I AM SO CONFUSED... I know...NOT good for the leader of the team to be confused..but ALL of my kidney function tests came back PERFECT. My new doctor is a diagnostic doctor, everything is nutrition based for preventative medicine.

She is calling my old doctor (of 8 years) and calling my nephrologist (who I have seen for three years - four in December 11). She says my kidney functions are TOO normal for me to have any type of kidney disease... ya all would think that I would be jumping for joy... eh? not so much! I am confused! She told me I can reverse my kidney disease to the point of NO kidney disease. I have said it over and over again - NO ONE has ever expressed this to me - EVER.

We will see! back three years ago when I first went to my doc about a problem, My kidney hurt or ached all of the time - still sometimes it aches, I was so very tired and tired easily - still - once exhausted it takes me days or weeks to feel well rested... I keep my kidneys hydrated so that I dont feel that "dryness" and burning sensation... we will see! An ultrasound was done that showed inflammation.. I will keep you posted!
