Hi, I'm 35 year old mother to 1 eight year old girl.
At age 27 I was in the best shape of my life, @ 130lbs. I worked out regularly and lived on oatmeal, grilled chicken, and green beans, and thats about it... After the birth of my daughter i was 175lb. I was prescribed a diet pill and was so happy to be 135 by age 30. I couldn't stay at that weight, and the way the diet pill made me feel was to scary to go back to... I am now 155. and the weight creeping up. I am ready to break this cycle!

I have been going to the gym every morning for a couple of weeks now. Working out faithfully isn't too hard. My challenge is eating healthy. With a busy life style, and being surrounded by skinny teens who are always carrying sugar laced coffee drinks, it's easy to fall off course time and time again.

I have overwhelmed myself with an overload of information about nutrition, to the point that I just gave up. Plant-strong diet, zero-carb high protein diet, Juice fasts, counting calories, weight watchers, you name it I've done it. I guess at this point I'm just looking for some simplicity so I can gain consistency to finally see some results!

I welcome any advice and all encouragement I can get. :)

I'm new to this team and to weight lifting, so just checking threads out. I'm in a learning phase so I have been doing research to get to the truth about weight lifting. I have learned some things I didn't know and still looking for more.

I have been doing Callanetics and walking 5 to 6 days a week. I eat as clean as I can but, I do eat eggs, fish and chicken. I have lost almost 40 lbs over the past 4 1/2 years and have 35 more to lose, but I want that 35 to be FAT. I want to build and repair what I can. I have a Bowflex so I have to start with that until I buy weights.

I'm looking forward to learning and sharing with y'all.

Hugs,
Charlie

Hi, I am jae, I recently ( in July of this year) had a hip replacement. I finished my physical therapy in the last 2 weeks. in th course of my therapy I really became hooked on the physical exericise and after talking to my thrapist she assured me that even at my age I can get fit and regain the strength and endurance that I have lost as well as( I know the imporatnce of )building muscle. I know it will take me longer to reach my goals..and I KNOW I CAN DO This.

Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.

Hi everyone I'm from Adelaide, South Australia. As the years are creeping up on me I have decided that being strong and lean is the best way to maintain my health. I did my first weight training session today after a most prolonged break. I just loved the physical feeling of it.

I'm new to the team. I've been strength training 3x a week since mid-March. I've been very successful at losing weight and getting toned and recently hit my first 'big' weight loss goal. I was hoping to STOP losing muscle, even start gaining muscle, once I hit that point but I continue (at least according to my body fat analyzer - handheld bioimpedence) to lose some muscle (albeit a smaller percentage) along with the fat. I'm hear to see if I can learn how to maintain and, hopefully, GAIN some muscle while I lose the last 10 or so pounds of fat.

Hi, I'm new to this team, my main goal on sparkpeople is to get to a healthy weight, but I don't want to just lose the fat and be saggy skin and bones... I want to get toned and strong too. I don't necessarily want to be full of bulky muscles, but I want to see definition in my arms, abs, legs, etc. When people look at me, I'd like them to see a fit healthy person.

Hello, my name is Leone. I am from the Central Coast NSW Australia and stumbled on SparkPeople yesterday whilst searching the DrOz website. I still don't know how I got here, but I am happy to have found the site.

I am 41 years old, mother to a very active 11 month old daughter. I have been trying to fit my training around her and the fact that I am unable to get to the gym very often. My husband has non-hodgkins lymphoma and has been having chemotherapy since February. His oncologist banned me from taking our daughter to the creche in the gym so she wouldn't bring home illnesses. It has been difficult as I use fitness as a coping mechanism and I still have my dreams of having a buff body. I really want to get my body fat back to 20% (it is around 25% now).

So, today I started P90X and did the cardio X, with Emma wrapped around my feet at some points as she decided not to sleep! I have to commit this time as I am tired of starting and not being able to complete my goals. Hopefully being a part of a group here will help.

Hello!

I've been on Spark for almost 5 years and just joined this team. I've come a long way and I've finally burnt off enough fat to actually start worrying about muscle definition. I'm also getting certified to teach BodyPump next weekend (soooooo excited!)

I workout 5-6days a week and do strength training each day. Some days I'll practice BodyPump, other days I'll use the machines and other days I'll do dumbells only. I'm the "Queen of Squats" and I wouldn't trade in my thunder thighs for anything else.

I have alot of excess skin from my weight loss and my goal is to tone and develop everything else (to take attention away from my apron). I want gorgeous arms and strong developed legs. My back and shoulders are very nice at this point, just a matter to keeping it up :)

Hi all. I need to keep fat off and I really want to build more muscle, especially in my back and arms. I have chronic neck and shoulder issues, and my physical therapist put some lifts off limits (such as anything with a barbell across the shoulders). Doing better now...I should be able to add unassisted dips back to the routine soon!

Lifting is my favorite exercise. I also run a little, do a rotation of gym machines (elliptical/stair climber/rower/arc trainer) and do yoga.

Hey All:
Been on Spark since April, working out since last June, after being away from the gym for almost 30 years! I change my routines frequently and right now have been having lots of progress by working the fast twitch muscles...using the most weight I can handle, with few reps and even fewer sets...Mostly 35/50/100 lb free weights for 2/3 sets of 6-15 reps; go to the gym every other day, doing entire body each time...not going heavy on cardio...I'll row for 10 mins at the gym (after lifting), then a fast walk to/from the subway after the gym (a mile both ways)...Eat clean (organic) Grass fed beef/buffalo, organic chicken, wild shellfish, organic whey protein...no sugars, HFCS, salt, trans-fats, nothing artificial, low-fat or "diet"and I especially stay away from aspartame...I'm looking forward to the exchange of ideas on this team...best to all of you on your journeys!

Hey all, new here to team, been on Spark for awhile now. I love to digest info on Strength training so figured this is a good place to add. I'm trying to focus a lot less on the scale and more on muscle gains/fat loss.
emoticon

Currently I'm following a 5x5 type of routine to increase strength and doing some accessory exercises as well. Just recently I decided to combine the 5x5 with the New Rules of Lifting for Women...basically the Squats, Deads, Bench and Barbell Row I do 5x5 instead of the higher reps and doing the rest of the NRoL4W exercises as prescribed in the book. I know it's a hybrid approach but I'm enjoying it so far, only a couple of weeks into this so I'm still in Stage 1. As I get into the harder phases of NRoL4W I may forgo the 5x5 and go purely with New Rules.

I've been lifting pretty much since I got on Spark, over 2 years ago, I started with machines and have graduated to free weights/barbells primarily. I've noticed a lot more gains in strength since I got off the strength machines and started doing barbell squats. Really wish I hadn't taken so long to break into the free weight area, I love it a lot more than the machines.

Hello!

I am new to the team but I have been on SP on and off for years.
I used to weigh 290+ now I am at 186. I would like to lose 6 more pounds and then start seriously gaining muscle! if anyone has any tips that would be great. I work 60+ hours per week and have very little time for workouts. No gym membership but I do have a fitness center in my apt building. The time is my biggest obstacle right now.

I'm basically doing same thing. I lost weight w lots of cardio and now am starting a focused effort on free weight training to build muscle. I am three or four weeks into free weight training and really enjoy it. Its hard to do both cardio and muscle gain at same time. So I first got down to my weight goal then started a focused program on weight lifting. However as a part of your cardio you certainly can work in strength fitness classes. I did this for over a year and got great toning accomplished. Good luck and I look forward to your insights.

Hello all, my name is Mike. I have been tracking my food and exercise minutes on Sparkpeople for about 8 months now. Knowing my calorie intake and burn has really helped me lose most of my belly fat and start to tone my body. I want to continue to improve my cardio conditioning and muscle tone. I look forward to the insight and sharing of information/opinions. I also like to see how my exercise minutes stack up with others.

Well hi everyone. I just joined SP the other day and am looking forward to meeting some new people and gaining/giving support.
I'm the typical story of a fitness fanatic who has slipped up after turning 30 and is just trying to get back into her "skinny jeans".
I love ST and know that if I could just commit to 4 days a week, I would lose this fat and gain back the muscles I had in my 20s and lose these 10 lbs for once and for all.
Glad to be here :)

Hi New to this team.

I've lost most of the fat I wanted now I need to build muscle and most likely I will gain muscle weight and get rid of those areas that needed toning because I couldn't lose those trouble areas.

so I'm hoping to find a routine here that will help me with that.

I'm vegan/Raw it's been about 2 mos. or so and I don't have a gym I have a treadmill, weights and Total Gym to help me with this goal.

Hello All,

I found this group due to common interest and goals. I really want to build muscle and blast the fat away. I still have residual pounds (11#) from pregnancy (3 yrs ago!) and want to get into prime shape and not be worried about putting on a bathing suit or shorts, etc. I hope to gain good knowledge and get sound advice in this group.

Recently started P90X going on to Day 7.

Thanks for reading!

I have been missing from the group all year and wanted to say hi.

I've been trying to post on my friend's pages today to see if I can solicit some support or get some more spark friends. So thought I would check in with this group too. I don't really know anyone on the team.

Decided to be more aggressive in my diet since I have been bouncing around all year 5 pounds and go to Yellowstone in two weeks for an adventure vacation.

It is day 8 of no diet cokes. I also decide to change my diet plan to be a little more aggressive and am now counting my carbs (and staying within the range of 150 net carbs), diet coke free, sugar free and trying to keep to a gluten free week. Day 4 of this plan.

Who knew giving up my favorite breads and caffeine would freak my body out so much. But this all tells me I am doing the right thing and that I need to ride this detox phase out.

Wish me luck!

Hello, I am new and have done SOME weight lifting in my past, but am still pretty ignorant on the subject. I want to get to where I am defined, not just skinny. I could use all the advice I can get. I always feel like I am doing something wrong when lifting, (not very confident). I am always asking myself:
1. is this enough weight?
2. How many reps?
3. Is my form good?
4. Did I work out hard enough?

Just a few...If anyone has any routine ideas or spark videos they use that has been useful to them please share!

Hi, I'm back. I just took little time away from the team but I was still working hard. I'm currently in that 179-181 weight range but have made improvements in my muscle definitions and size.

I'm still eating my 3,060 cals/day (102 fat grams, 306 carb grams, 229 protein grams).

My problem is that I'm still 'hooked' on numbers when i want to to be concerned with size, especially the wasit to chest ratio. I want that classic "V" look!

Hi, new to team here. I'm Virpi from Helsinki, Finland.

I've been concentrating mostly on cardio for a long time, some problems with my health, but now it's finally the time to put those pink dumbbells down and grab some iron.

Nice to meet you all:)

Hello All!
I am new to the group and am looking forward to meeting some new people with similar goals (and struggles)! I have recently lost 25lbs (and feeling much better) focusing mostly on cardio, but want to get back to gaining some lean muscle... so this seemed like a good place to start!

Cheers,
Tim

Hello all!

I joined Spark People yesterday, March 1. I broke my leg long ago and therefore my physical activity right now is limited. Once I get the doctor's approval, I'm hoping to slowly get myself back into weight bearing exercises.

I know gaining muscle isn't easy but I really want to change my body.

Looking forward to progressing with the team!

Hi! New to the group here. I want to work slowly into using more weights & developing nice muscle tone. Up till now, I have only been doing cardio (and not consistently at that), but I am gettin' SERIOUS here. Added 4 sets of 20 push-ups, squats & crunches to my routine today & plan on building from there. emoticon

Hi everyone!! I lost 25 lbs with Sparkpeople and now I want to firm and tone up everything! I started working with a personal trainer about 5 weeks ago. I've been lifting heavier weights and I'm starting to see some results. It's taking longer than I had hoped but I'm optimistic!!

I'm no expert, but from what I've read, you should be just as capable of packing on muscle as any other adult. Obviously, someone who's an adolescent will have natural hormones helping them out, but for those of us who are done with our growth, I've read that it's pretty much the same.

That said, the things that can be restrictive are any individual health issues (bones & joints, cardiovascular health, etc.) so you should definitely keep in communication with your doctor before doing anything too strenuous.

Hi...I am new to this team. Seriously changed things around two years ago when I stopped focusing on only cardio and worked with a trainer with weight training. Made a huge difference and lost over 35 pounds and 20 inches. Now I am hooked on weight training and love to read all the information I can get my hands on....

I weight train 3x a week and my cardio is either interval jump roping or spin class. Taking a break from other cardio this month.

The question that I get mixed answers on is the relationship of building muscles to age....I am 57 and have been able to build more muscle than I thought but is there a point where I will just plateau with that? I'm hoping the answer is "no"!

Thanks and looking forward to reading info on this site.

emoticon Hi I am new to this Spark Team. I am a Pilates instructor. I lift weights 3 x a week, I just started Cathe's STS and Shock Cardio rotation. I will do it for 6 1/2 months. It is a 3 day split with cardio in between days. I also like to do outdoor activities such as ski, hike, bike, run. I don't show a lot of lean muscle mass and am looking for insights on lowering body fat while increasing muscle mass.

Hi. I've been exercising regularly for a decade now, but for most of that time also struggling with overcoming CFS. I feel like I have almost conquered it, but still need to be careful not to sent myself into a tailspin. I don't feel like I fit in with the other health groups and maybe I don't quite fit here either since I have to be careful; but I really want to get stronger and lose the fat. I know it will just have to be a slower journey for me. Since I started Sparkpeople 2 months ago I have lost 10 slow pounds and am toning up. I think being able to check in with this team will be good.

I'm fairly new to this team but have been weight training off and on for years. More off than on, since my problem has always been poor motivation and discipline. I stick with it long enough to make some good gains and then slack off for one reason or another.

I think of where I'd be today if I'd stayed consistent.
Once and for all, I want to get on track and stay there.

Hey my name is Norman and I'm getting close to my weight loss goal, but feel that going below that weight in relation to my height and age would be borderline unhealthy. I want to gain more muscle and replace the fat/weight I have on right now.

Cheers and here's hoping that this team will be the one to push me there.

I've always believed in the "eat less, exercise more" structure of becoming healthy because that's what society always seems to be pushing (looking in the mirror should have told me otherwise, I know, but anyway...) Then a friend's son who happens to be a personal trainer and gym owner started emailing me in attempts to "wisen" me up. He gave me a plan to follow, emphasis on lifting, told me to stop starving myself and read the book New Rules of Lifting for Women. Now I'm hooked but know I'm gonna need a lot of guidance along the way so here I am! emoticon

Hello, I joined this team because I hope it will motivate me by seeing where I could be if I keep working. I am working to lose a lot of weight and gain muscle. I was diagnosed with morbid obesity and I never want to hear those words describing me again!
