Thanks you guys! I just finished my 4th barefoot run and still feeling no shin pain. I run every other day and am sticking to .6 miles until I've run 7 or so times.

I still did notice some shin pain initially, but I was foolish and jumped right in to running in FiveFingers! If you work up slowly you should be fine.

Sounds like a great plan as long as you listen to your body. I assume you did not feel any shin splints on your 0.6 mile run.
If in doubt take a look at the barefoot forum on runner's world where there is an intro section which is well done.
Cheers,
Birgit

I just completed my first barefoot run, .6 miles, pushing my toddler in the jogging stroller, and I feel great! I've always struggled with shin splints, in high school it was only during track season...now, it's whenever I try to run unless I soak my lower body in a tub of ice water immediately after each run. I read Born to Run a year and a half ago and was intrigued. Then I just read two more books about barefoot running (one was ChiRunning) and they convinced me to just go for it. My plan is to run my .6 mile loop every other day for a week, as long as I'm not sore add another .3 miles and just increase my mileage by .3 miles every week (and stick to running every other day). Once I have done 3 miles every other day for a week I'll start adding mileage during the in between days, until I'm running 3 miles 5x a week, then train for an actual 5k from there.
