There doesn't seem to be a lot of activity on this board but I'll introduce myself :-) I am a 30 year old mother of one diagnosed with Barretts late last year. I am really struggling with managing it and have not found medication beneficial.

I received the diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus about 3 years ago. I had years of GERD.
I'm on medication now (pantaprozole and famotidine) each day. I had precancerous cells removed twice and have the famous ring. I avoid trigger foods and stay with organic foods when possible.

I am on my way to better health!

Anyone still active in this team?

I was diagnosed with Barrett's a little over a year ago. Both pathology reports said negative, but the MD said he knows what he saw. I recently switched GI doctors because (A) my previous doctor's staff was horrible, and (B) who knows now? do I have it or not? Is it a matter of the MD thinking he's God?!?
My new doc didn't want to do a repeat scope, even though I've had that frequent phlegmy feeling in my throat, occasional hoarse voice, and worsening heartburn. Switched me from Prilosec all the way to Dexilant, which from my understanding is the "big guns"?
Would love to friend some people who know what this constant anxiety is like!

I have had a very rough year. On top of everything else I found out today that I Barrett's Esophagus in addition to gettting food allergies results today.

I went to a specialist last May and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after years of exhaustion, not feeling well, and doctors telling me the results are negative & there's nothing wrong with you.... so I didn't go to the doctor last fall and kept feeling worse & worse. Finally in March I thought I was dying so I went to the doctor and started seeing a chiropractor for back pain. I had my gallbladder removed in late March and also started seeing a nutritionist. I was still in pain and miserable so went back to the doctor and had a lot more tests. My bloodwork showed a Vitamin D deficiency...12.3 when the level should be something like 33-50. The heartburn continued so I saw a GI doctor and had the endoscopy last week which showed the Barrett's Esophagus. My nutritionist also did a food allergy to 100 foods and the results came back today...the avoid list included: milk, whey protein, casein, cottage cheese, egg white, green beans, & kidney beans. The moderate allergy list included cheeses & egg yellows.

I am overwhelmed at this point and so tired of being sick & in pain. I am open to suggestions at this point for my diet.

I know what you mean. You have to wait 2 years for another scope and when I have chest pain, it bothers me as I wonder if my Barretts is getting worse. I had stage 1 two years ago and it cleared up with medication. I do continue to drink coffee and drink some pop. I just pray that it doesn't bother me. I drink the simply smooth which has less acid. and Java instant coffee which is half acid. They both work for me, I have trouble with some of my vitamins and have to try different brands. right now my calcuim plus D is giving me trouble, thought it was something I was eating until I missed a day and after I took it I started to get the heartburn. so will try another brand. Good luck and keep posting

that hovering is the killer isnt it? i wish they could do something right after the Barretts diagnosis like they do for other conditions...My doctor equated it to have an abnormal pap smear/which i know they do something about right away, dont they? very frustrating

Hi, my name is Brenda. I was just diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus and know very little about it. Prilosec has been working wonders and I have not had acid reflux since I began the medication 5 weeks ago. Looking for dietary suggestions?
I need to lose about 30 pounds. My age (55) has finally caught up with me (all of the sudden, or so it seems!) I love to cycle but Pittsburgh winters don't fare well for cyclists so I've been working on treadmill for last few months and recently joined Curves (which is totally awesome!) I'm surprised that there are only 31 members in this team, I bet alot of folks have the symptoms but go unchecked (as I did for years). Having a so-so day today, this diagnosis was not what I wanted to hear!

Hello!! I was diagnosed with Barretts only a few weeks ago. I have learned so much about it online and on here. Mine I guess you would say is stage 1? It is in the precancerous early stage. I walk about a mile or 2 a day it is according to when I get to go and how much time I have. I have been doing pretty good on diet and exercise. I don't drink regular coffee anymore. I drink an herbal coffee which is a tea called Teecino. It has not bothered me at all so far. It is loaded with vitamins. I look forward to getting to know all of you on this board. emoticon

I recently had another scope due to so much heartburn and chest pain. everything is normal and no stage one. My friend who was my age did die from Barrett's a couple months ago. It really got to me. My new doctor told me that as long as I take my prilosec everyday and don't have any problems I should be able to drink coffee and pop in moderation. He does not want me to drink. I do do a beer or wine once in awhile with no problems. Since I have lost 20 #'s I am feeling much better, just have 5 to go to my goal. It is hard I havn't lost for a month, hope everyone starts posting again as we have a disease that is hard to cope with at times because we don't really know what is going on in there without the scope. Everyone keep up the healthy eating.

I can relate to Debbie's testimony very easily. I was taking Nexium for some time and had no problems. On request from the insurance company to try a generic, I switched. I have tried prilosec, protonix and prevacid. None of these helped. I am now back on Nexium. I've been back on for almost a week. For the last several monthes, I have had burning in my throat, a lot of coughing, and sneezing. Sleeping is trying because the coughing is keeping me awake. I am hoping the Nexium goes back to working as well as it used to.

hello, I have had Barrett's for over ten years and have had stage l and I was able to heal it. There are four stages before you get cancer. I am better at my diet now, which is hard because everything we eat and drink is not the best for us. I have gone to soy milk and have found it to agree with me. Welcome all ideas from everyone. I work in a nursing home and we recently have a patient with the cancer and he feels he should have changed his life style sooner, so we want to do as much as we can. That is how I felt when I had stage l, as I had not given up pop or coffee, now I only have them once in a while. I love pop and coffee so very hard not to drink when with others. I think that pop is the worst one. I have found this instant coffee at Wal-Mart that is half the acid that doesn't give me heartburn, Kava.

My Barrett's Esophagus was diagnosed about 4 years ago after my first endoscopy. Last year on my 2nd endo, the once a day Prilosec was doubled to two per day.

The funny thing is that I have never known what heartburn was like, nor acid reflux. It turns out that there is such a thing as Silent GERD, ie, an almost symptom free form. I did have a little regurgitation, but that's about all. I have always considered myself to have a 'cast iron stomach'.

It was found, almost by accident, when over several years I had several bouts of pain under my sternum.
I had all the usual "heart: tests, including wearing a Holter monitor for 24 hours. I have normal blood pressure with out drugs. Nitro WOULD stop the pain. The ER docs told me that nitro only works on two types of tissue, the heart and esophagus! Since they felt clearly that my heart was fine, they sent me to the gastrologist.

I haven't had to give up any foods, since I don't eat pizza, any processed or red meats and was already on a self-prescribed low sodium diet.

I am now exercising more and last year lost nearly 30 pounds. I still have that much more to loose and that will come off this year. I work out at Curves a minimum of three days a week and get another half hour of cardio a minimum of 5 days a week by brisk walking. Did I mention that I am 70 years old?

Hello. My Barrett's was diagnosed a little over two years ago. As a woman in my early 30's it was quite a shocker. I have now come to terms with the daily medication (I am on Protonix as nothing else worked)and the every 2 year endos. It's still pretty nerve racking having the big C hovering over my head. I gave up caffine (mostly) and have tried to maintain a fat reduced diet.

If Nexium is not working, you need to either change or add medications. This is serious stuff. See a gastroenterologist soon, if you haven't already.

Hello all. My Barrett's was diagnosed a few years ago. I have had surgery to correct the hiatal hernia, but it was unsuccessful. I am taking multiple medications and am being closely monitored. At this point, no pain or other symptoms, but I want to lose weight to reduce the pressure on my stomach and diaphragm.

Hello my names is Debbie. I haven't been diagnosed with Barrett's but I've been on Nexium for about four weeks after several months of Prylosec. I'm still not doing very well. I'm giving up coffee, alcohol, and trying to get my throat to stop hurting. Right now I'm in pain almost constantly like a hoarse throat and the start of a cold. I have a lot of congestion and coughing. I think I have to avoid Dairy now and yeast. Just looking for what others are doing to control their symptoms. I know the major issue seems like it's wieght loss. I need to get motivated now as I'm really feeling worse continually. Not sleeping well due to the constant pain. I want to see if anyone has looked into food combining?
Thanks,
Debbie emoticon

My name is Rebecca and I was diagnosed with Barrett esophaghus in Jan 09. I was told by my family doctor that I have the beginning stage of Barretts.

My heartburn started after my car accident 6 years ago. 3 week hospital stay and 12 broken bones. Still giving up foods and liquids that I like. Losing weight also. 25 lbs got added to my waist after my accident. I have lost 14 lbs so far.
I also learned that I have food allergies. Dairy protein starts the GERD these days. However I havent given up regular coffee and my occasional gin & tonics. Those are next.
