My Barrett's Esophagus was diagnosed about 4 years ago after my first endoscopy. Last year on my 2nd endo, the once a day Prilosec was doubled to two per day.
The funny thing is that I have never known what heartburn was like, nor acid reflux. It turns out that there is such a thing as Silent GERD, ie, an almost symptom free form. I did have a little regurgitation, but that's about all. I have always considered myself to have a 'cast iron stomach'.
It was found, almost by accident, when over several years I had several bouts of pain under my sternum.
I had all the usual "heart: tests, including wearing a Holter monitor for 24 hours. I have normal blood pressure with out drugs. Nitro WOULD stop the pain. The ER docs told me that nitro only works on two types of tissue, the heart and esophagus! Since they felt clearly that my heart was fine, they sent me to the gastrologist.
I haven't had to give up any foods, since I don't eat pizza, any processed or red meats and was already on a self-prescribed low sodium diet.
I am now exercising more and last year lost nearly 30 pounds. I still have that much more to loose and that will come off this year. I work out at Curves a minimum of three days a week and get another half hour of cardio a minimum of 5 days a week by brisk walking. Did I mention that I am 70 years old?
