Welcome back
I don't live in the mountains either-it's a 700+ mile drive to go skiing (then 700+ miles home again). We are just back, no skiing till our next trip probably Feb 2015 emoticon too long to wait!

I've been out of the Spark People mix for a few years... but I'm making a serious effort to get back into the groove and make my health and fitness a priority again. I love to ski and an devastated at missing this season entirely. Living in IL is posing serious threats to my hobbies. Off season training will be key for next year to be great for me. I'm excited to be back!

Hi Everyone,

I'm Amy from New Hampshire. I love to ski and its my main source of exercise in the winter. We haven't had great weather so far this year, but I'm still trying to make the best of it.

Hi everyone! I am from Ohio (yes, we do actually have some small ski resorts in Ohio). I am a ski instructor, as is my fiancée. We also both race amature downhill ski racing. I have been a sparkpeople member for a few years, but am really just getting back into it and hoping to stick with it this time!. I'm very excited to have found a spark team of other skiers! :)

Hi guys! I'm from Canada, Ottawa more specifically. I have not skied in about 15 years, but as part of my "learn to love sports so I don't have to keep hating the gym" plan, I've just bought skis and have a lift ticket for this Sunday! I know it won't be pretty, and I know there will be pain, but I can't wait!

What a great place to be. I haven't skied in Germany, we go to France but I'd like to one day. You can't be far from Austria & Switzerland-some great resorts there too.
Have a great season

Winter sports season is almost here and I'm excited!

I'm Emily and I reside in Madison, WI, but for a year I'm living in Garmish-Partenkirchen, Germany, close to the highest point in the country. The snow line is coming closer and closer to town and I'm inspired to start getting ready to ski.

Alpine touring is very popular here. People use skis with bindings that can free the heel to hike up and then lock to ski down. I like to ski because it's easy for me and doesn't even feel like exercise. I'm willing to give this feeling of satisfaction that comes from getting up on my own power a try, but I definitely need to be in better shape and being a few pounds lighter would help, too.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have been skiing since I was a child. I hope this group gets going again soon when ski season gets into swing!

Hello Renee and Ashley!

Welcome to the team. I think we are all going to have to think snow! I've even done my own personal "snow" dance... I wash my car. And usually (except this year for some reason) that'll make it snow. I need new ideas emoticon

Hi, I'm new to the team and just wanted to introduce myself. Hitting the slopes for the first time this year (with new ski boots that I got for Christmas). Going local to Sunrise in North Eastern Arizona - will be spring like conditions. Hoping/praying it starts to snow more before February trip to Breckenridge

Hi Team. My name is Erica. I also live in Colorado (Denver/Littleton area). I have the Colorado pass (Winter Park, Copper Mountain & Steamboat Springs). I love skiing & it is my passion. Skiing keeps me motivated to working out all through the year so I can stay in shape for the season on the slopes. I am very excited to join a team with other people who enjoy being on the mountain whether it be skiing or snow boarding. I also enjoy hiking, mountain biking, back packing & playing/ going on walks with our dog (golden retriever). I look forward to getting to know other team members & sharing ideas & experiences.

I would be happy to ski with you if I am in that particular area. I ski along the Epic Pass (their resorts - ABasin, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, North Star Lake Tahoe, Heavenly, and Vail) + TRide, Monarch Pass, Kendal, Aspen/SnowMass area, Whistler, and Lake Louise . I go about once a week, which is approximate, but I regular ski 3 - 4 times per month October through as late as the season goes.

Hi Team - I'm originally from Southern AZ, mostly grew up there so needless to say I am not much of a skier! :) Although, one of the reasons I moved to Colorado 3 years ago was to learn how to ski. I have been a couple of times and did ok. I am committed to it this season and have purchased a pass -- totally excited! I've also renewed my commitment to losing those damn 20 lbs! :-)

A ski buddy would be welcome!

Thanks,

Andrea

We don't judge where you are from! I'm originally from small town Illinois... which is as flat as they come. And I learned how to ski as an adult so trust me, the skill level runs the gamut.
And I love to meet people on the lifts that come from "beachy" areas. Just means they live a full life and get out of their comfort zones! emoticon
Hope to see you on the mountains!

I live in Malibu, but I have an Epic Pass, and frequent their resorts in addition to Kendall (Silverton), Telluride, Snowmass, and The Gant.

I thought given the group, I might want to qualify where I ski and snowboard, since Malibu is not wrought with good skiing facilities - lol. There are a lot of us that spend an inordinate part of the year elsewhere skiing though :)

I am not quite sure what to type here, as I have no idea what you would want to know. I live in coastal SoCal, and I am looking forward to beginning this journey with each of you.

Blessings to you all, and please don't hesitate to ask a question, as I am sure I will answer, I just really don't know what to say.

That makes a lot of sense...training off season in hopes of improving. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and our ski season is short as well. If we're lucky, we can ski from just before Christmas until the end of March. I found a huge improvement in my skiing last year, and had been doing a lot of cardio and resistance training as well. I made sure to do a lot of lunges, squats and BOSU stuff in preparation. This year I've been doing the same, but different - mixing up the resistance stuff, and increasing the intensity of my cardio. It'll be interesting to see what, if any, improvements I make on the hill this season :)

Andy kids can ski circles around me too! Doesn't take them long!

Not at all a strange time to focus on skiing this time of year. After all the days are getting shorter winter is on the way. I am a PSIA level 1 instructor, and all of the ed staff at my hill, it is in Ohio so not a mountain, stress that the ski season is too short to really improve your skiing. Your best shot at improving, is in the off season. Running cycling for your legs strength training for the core. Most of us know the skills we need to ski better but our level of fitness gets in the way of doing them. My kids started outskiing me last year so I have to catch up.

Hello!

It seems like a strange time of year to join this team, but I was so excited to find it! I LOVE downhill skiing and have my ski pass for next season ready to go! We like to ski as a family (my husband and two kids) and its one of our favourite activities!

So hello to everyone, and I'm looking forward to participating in this team!

I completely understand about the calves thing. I make jokes that I have unnaturally large calves from skiing. But it's true! I play soccer and I have to get MEN'S LARGE socks to go over my calves and shin guards.
And I think a lot of us just want to be healthy enough to enjoy our lives - I know I'm not looking to have the perfect "bikini ready" body.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Phoebe and I'm from VT. My dad runs the snowboard program at a VT resort, so I've been a mountain rat since about age 6. I snowboard but mostly ski. I just joined sparkpeople to help lose a little weight before my boyfriend and I go to Key West in June. I'm more interested in feeling fit for skiing and other sports than having a perfect body or being super skinny - I actually set my weight goal above the recomended one by sparkpeople because I enjoy being a curvaceous girl. And if I weighed 135lbs I'd be a stick with GIANT skier calves haha!

Sounds like everyone here really loves sliding on snow, regardless of how or how experienced you are!

Hi Ellen emoticon

Sounds like you did a real number on your knee. I'm sorry that the collision put you out of your skiing season and into PT. I hope it heals so that you are ready to go again by next season.
I (thankfully) don't have any experience with PT so I won't be much help. But it's the PT's job to help you so that you can function normally without (or very little) pain. I'm sure it's frustrating because you want to drive and do other things. But they do have your best interests in mind when they limit your activity. I guess as cliche as this sounds, you must "trust the process."

Well, unfortunately, my ski season is over as of 5 1/2 weeks ago. My husband, two kids and I live in Hailey, ID near Sun Valley. My husband grew up skiing in Lake Tahoe and racing all over the western US. I grew up body surfing in Southern California.

My big skiing goals this year were to learn to ski moguls and keep up with the kids - ages 5 and 8. They are learning to get off the grooming this year as well. Unfortunately on the last afternoon of the Local's Clinic (3 Sat. afternoons in a row), another student in the class and I collided! Results: severed ACL, partial MCL tear, and some miniscus damage. I had ACL reconstruction surgery 4 1/2 weeks ago, started PT 3 1/2 weeks ago, I can now bend my right knee 95 degrees, and my Physical Therapist won't let me drive yet.

Thought this would be a great team to ski vicariously and perhaps a few insights on the PT rehab process.

And, btw, the other skier was behind me and he's just fine. Argh!!

Hi Debbie!

We all have different stories about how we started skiing. At least you haven't given up! And I think by teaching your children how to ski is a great thing. They will get to do something that you rarely got to do growing up. Way to be a fun mom!!

Hi. I'm Debbie. I skiied a few times as a little kid but then we moved and my family stopped skiing while I was growing up. So my sisters were expert skiiers (they're 9 and 11 years older than I am, so they grew up skiing) and I was a rank beginner. I took a couple lessons after I graduated college but then didn't continue.

Then I met my husband in 1996 in Korea. He grew up skiing in Oregon. We went to the local mountain one day and he tried to teach me. The mountain was so incredibly crowded that I was intimidated with the fear of running into people or having them run into me (it wasn't an irrational fear... it happed quite a few times.) I was doing okay by the end of the day, but it was another year by the time I went skiing again. But this time I was able to ski for 3 or 4 days in a row and was able to do blue within a couple days.

Ever since then we've skiied a few days every season (usually at Mt Bachelor near Bend, OR). I'm not fabulous, but I can ski the single black areas. We were waiting for our daughter to turn 3.5 so that we could start both kids in ski lessons up there. Last year she was old enough and we put the kids in all day lessons for 3 days in a row. They loved it and couldn't wait to do it again.

This year they've skiied Snow Summit at Big Bear (Southern California) one day and I'll be taking them up to Mammoth Mountain with a friend and her son in March for a few days. Next year we'll be going back up to Mt Bachelor for 5 days. So far the Mt Bachelor program has impressed me the most. I love that the kids enjoy it and will get a chance to grow up skiing the way my husband and sister did. I wish I had.

Hi Jamie - welcome to the team!
emoticon emoticon

Sometimes it really makes you feel out of shape when you take back up a hobby or sport you did when you were young. Seemed soooo easy back then!
But good for you for getting back into the swing of things (and using old connections!) because I'm sure you'll find that even if your favorite sport is a little more physically demanding, it's even more enjoyable now.

Be sure tell us on the Anyone Skiing Today message board of where you go skiing. I am making a "bucket list" of mountains/resorts to keep me skiing well into my 80's.

Hi All,
I am Jamie. I started skiing when I was 3 years old and racing competively when I was 6. I raced into college and then stopped for academics. I have not skied in the past 10 years, and have gained about 70lbs from my old competition days- of course having 2 kids might play into that as well. I finally got my hands on a pair of skies and boots (love being an ex racer, I still have connections and got great skies and boots from an old coach!!) and have skied twice this year! Woohoo!! My first time out this year, I realized just how hard it was when I broke a huge sweat just getting my boots on. What an eye opener. Now I am on a mission to restore my body back to my skier body, and get myself back into that skier shape.

For Shannon- where is NY are you? I grew up in NY and raced there until I went to college in NH. I was a racer out of Brantling, but went to many races in the Adirondacks- White Face and Gore mainly!!

I agree Kathie. I just learned to ski four years ago and take lessons every season with my local ski club. Its definitely the love of the sport and not how good you are. If I ever stop loving it I won't ski, its just too much fun to make it be serious! emoticon

Welcome to the team Kathie!
Skill and ability have no relevence here. The love of the sport is what's important to this team. In fact, I would consider myself a beginner/intermediate skier. There are some blue runs that I refuse to go on!
It's great to hear that you are loving it. emoticon

Hi, I'm Kathie and I live in Vancouver BC. I just started learning to ski properly this season (after 8 years of not) because it seemed silly to live here, own skis, and not take advantage of all the ski hills! I live 15 minutes from 3 of them.

So far I am loving it but I'm definitely not good at it yet. Practise makes perfect, though, right? I'm planning to go out tomorrow before my next class on Monday ^_^

Hi. I'm Christine. New to the forum. Been skiing about 39 years of my 42 on earth. :) Taught and coached a junior development team here in SE Michigan for 15+ years. Snowboarded for about 14 years. Took 5 years off to focus on work and being a Mom. Ended up being totally out of shape because of it. Gooey. So I've started teaching again. Already have had 14 on-snow days this year. Yay!! Mixing in Couch to 5K workouts and playing XBox Kinect with my family to fill in the workout gaps. :)

Welcome to the team Danielle. I think skiiers and boarders can get along. emoticon
The team has people from EVERYWHERE and all walks of life. Some prefer cross country skiing over downhill. And there are the crazy-break-your-arm boarders just like you. I kid, I kid. I have mad respect for boarders because I don't think I could even do it.
And I like your idea of a great day - it pretty much matches my own.

Hi, I'm Shannon. I live in a small town just south of the adirondacks in New York. I have been a skier since I was a little kid. I usually ski at a small mountain about 15 minutes away but I am only a couple of hours away from some great east coast mountains. I skied quite a bit last winter but my ski buddy is pregnant so I probably won't be venturing out to many new places this year.

Hey there! I'm Danielle from Green Bay, WI. I was looking for a Snowboarding team, but I guess this will have to do. Can we all get along and not fight? Ha. Anyway I love everything about being on the hills and in the lodges. I am not a great snowboarder, but loving it doesn't mean I have to be perfect at it, right! Im looking to lose enough weight to be able to buckle and unbuckle my bindings without breaking a sweat or straining! It sucks when you're obese!

When i think about a perfect day i think about snowboarding all over the hills with a few breaks to have a beer, sit at the top of a hill enjoying the scenery (out of the way of course) and coming back to a crackling fire, hot meal, good friends and a few more beers. Makes me want to cry!

Cheers to all of you guys for loving winter sports! I love this team already! emoticon

Hi Portia! emoticon
There are always going to be obstacles and life changes that derail you. We are always here to help you get back on track when you need it.
This is a time in your life to put YOURSELF as a priority.
Try not to think of those glory days (though, I have to admit I am a wee bit jealous) with envy. Keep moving forward and you will be successful.
You didn't mention how old your boys were but maybe you can teach them how to ski as well as their momma did. I think that might be a motivator for you.

Welcome,
You can shed those pounds-it's hard work (at times) but really worth it.

Hi this is Portia. For most of my life, I was a competitive snow skier and in-line skater. In 1995, I was living in Alta Ski Resort and skiing 150+ days a year. I was lucky enough to be at the forefront of the extreme skier movement. I used to huck my (formerly) beautiful body off big rocks! Then I made the ultimate mistake and married the wrong person. My divorce left me with 100 extra pounds. In the past 3 years, I traded in my ex for a better model and had three boys (a single and a set of twins). I have lost and gained the same 40 pounds a gazillion times. I want so badly to find that hot body from my twenties under all this fat!

Hi Becky - glad to have you on the team!

A friend of mine spent some time abroad (mostly Hong Kong) and told me she loved skiing in Japan. I don't know much about it - so I hope you fill us in!
Our team comes from all levels and abilities so feel free to post questions, answers, thoughts, ramblings, etc.

Hi Everyone!

I'm Becky and I learned to snowboard (and ski a tiny bit) when I came to Japan last year. I LOVED snowboarding and am really looking forward to the season starting again - it's just around the corner! With our short days, doing something like snowboarding will be a great fun thing to do outside.

Hey Vanessa

Jill here from Columbus Ohio. I have been a member since 2006 and learned to ski three years ago. I snow ski but no boarding. My goal is to get to a western slope this ski season, so far everything has been on the east coast (Virginia, New York).

I enjoy hiking, wine tasting, and read tons of books per year. I also have three adult children and two grandchildren.

I am really looking forward to this ski season! emoticon

Reading through all the posts about where everyone is from is awesome. But it's also a bit time consuming so I figured we could have an introduction thread front and center.

So introduce yourself here!

I would love to know who everyone is since I've newly joined this group and newly co-leader of it! So I'll start.
I'm Vanessa from Colorado (in the Denver area). Been a SP member for almost 3 years. I'm a downhill skier.
I love snowshoeing, mountain biking, hiking and whitewater rafting as well.
I hope to someday ski up in BC, Canada and in Switzerland.
Hope to have the chance to connect with everyone on this team!
