I've also had the experience of being harassed because I'm a liberal. And I've left groups because of it -- I am absolutely not willing to be treated so disrespectfully any more!

I have one friend who is the dearest, kindest lady -- she would do anything to help you if you needed it. A good Christian -- goes to church regularly & is active in the church as well. She's also very intelligent -- a retired professor from the California Status University system.

And she's a Republican -- absolutely cannot have a reasonable political discussion! We have talked about how polarized the country has become & how dysfunctional that makes our political system. And in the next breath she is spouting Republican nonsense and disparaging anything & anyone Democratic.

It's so discouraging!

A chill pill! Oh, Barbara, you've made my day! Hahahahaha ... I'm going to put up (if I can find it) the perfect picture in my gallery ... we'll see how long it sits there before I get told to take it off ... you can call it your "chill pill" -- fixes everything! ROTFLMAO ... just give me a sec to find it ...

Don't miss understand, I don't have a problem with anyone who is a Republican, everyone has a right to their own opinion. But I don't understand why most of them seem to think that a Democratic President is sending the country straight to hell. I really don't understand the hatered some have for our presendent, and not just Obama, they hated Clinton just as much. I've seen people get so upset about it I was afraid they were going to stroke out or something. I was not a Bush fan, but I didn't hate him. He made decisions I didn't support, but he was the President and that deserves respect. I saw comments on another discussion group where people were threatening to move to Canada on account of the Health Care bill being passed (ironic, huh?). I just don't understand that kind of thinking. There are some people who just need to take a chill pill.

I'm in Texas but I think that because I'm AA, they automatically know not to bring up any of their "Obama Issues" out of fear that I'll go off on them or something...even though there are plenty of AA Republicans, they don't want to take a chance....lol!!!!!!

Welcome!

Our problem is with wingnuts, not Republicans per se. I've had a lot of good Republican friends with whom I could exchange friendly debate and good-natured ribbing.

emoticon Talk about how fanatical people can be, except for my brother & his family who live way far from me in the boonies, I have absolutely no family here locally because I can't take another holiday get-together without hearing a lot of crazy screaming, racial, gay, non-christian slurs and Limbozo speak -- and of course it's me who gets ganged up on and told to "shut up." In the past I've replied with "excuse me? how do you expect me to answer your question and shut up at the same time?" Now I just stay away from them.

The problem with labels is that they get distorted to whatever people's agendas are. So a democrat automatically becomes a liberal, a liberal becomes a commie, and figure this out ... Obama becomes a non-Christian, non-American, and is depicted as Hitler. Say what? Did these tea partiers forget that it so happened that Hitler was a Christian and that he was of the far right rather than the left? That Hitler would have had Obama exterminated for the very non-white-aryan (sp?) color of his skin???

Oh ... I am wandering ... yes, there are things I am actually quite conservative about, some where I defy description ( have self named that one ODD ), and some where you'd be quite right to call me a socialist or a Marxist. As for the conservatives, Republicans, Republicrats, neo-nazis, etc., maybe I'm biased, but if they get labelled as far-right extremists, fascists, etc.... I just can't help myself thinking that they out and out freakin' asked for it! Palin and McCain just dubbed themselves the party of "Hell NO!" after Boehner's rant on the House floor during debate on healthcare ... how am I supposed to see this stuff? Chalking it up to sour grapes and anger over not getting their way, seems like another 1930's style passivity and inattention to the vile nature and agenda of these tea party folks, militias building arsenals (9 were arrested right here in the midwest great lakes area and charged with treasonist intentions [paraphrasing]) ...

We all need to stop defining everyone by labels.

What is a Democrat, a Republican, a liberal, a conservative??? I bet you each of us sees someone who epitomizes what we individually think each of these (and all other labels) looks and acts like. And they would all be at least slightly different. We are, of course, all individuals and we ARE all different.

I don't like it when anyone tries to box me into a one size fits all label without knowing me and my nuances. There is no such thing as only one kind of anything. And when we, in turn, derogatorily talk about THOSE PEOPLE, be they Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives or what have you, we are just polarizing ourselves and nothing gets accomplished.

One of reasons I have supported and continue to support our President is his fast belief that we need to accord courtesy to all, to LISTEN and to negotiate and stop pronouncing THEM as ALL as stupid, evil, bad, misinformed, wing-nuts etc. Not everyone is all of this all the time. And labels are just another form of sound bytes that we are all prey to and victims of.

I can label myself but I want to be able to explain my perception of myself and the labels I use for me. And I won't assume you see yourself the same way even if you use the same label.

Open, ongoing discourse is needed ~ALWAYS.

I have cut off folks I both care about and don't care about from my E-mail, my Facebook page, my social outlets, etc., if they are unwilling to at least listen and discuss. I don't want to waste my time here on earth trying to convince someone of something, spend time with someone who is unwilling to discuss the issues for a possible solution or someone who doesn't want to even agree to disagree. Life is too short and my time is too precious.

Welcome to the group from Southeastern PA. I understand where you are coming from. I am married to a moderate Republican who normally is a sane person, however he insists there are two sides to every argument (even when there really isn't).

Good luck with your goals.

I get a lot of the hateful right-wing comments way up here in "Liberal" Connecticut, so I can only imagine what you get in Texas! I've actually lost friends by asking them to stop bad-mouthing the President in front of me, but I'd rather not have people with those "values" in my life. It's amazing how free they feel to say such nasty things about this President who is only trying to do GOOD!

Welcome!

Isn't it refreshing when you run into a reasonable republican? There are so few.

I use to do a game night with some girlfriends. Several of them were so Anti-Democrat, so viciously right wing that it was really hard to listen to them. They are not bad people and could be a lot of fun. Just completely misinformed, completely blind to anything but, their own beliefs and ideology. It was offensive. I tried a few times to say something but, it really fell on deaf ears so, I left the group, along with some others and it just kind of fizzled.

I think people that are so one sided feel very threatened by any difference of opinion. Their loss.

I'm so glad I found this team. I live in a place where dems are definately in the minority. I feel very intemidated about speaking my mind with friends. I change my church congrigation after the election because everyone was so upset and wouldn't leave it alone. They never said it out-right but the idea was definately in the air that it's impossible for a democrat to go to heaven. I do have a few good friends that I can talk freely with, one is even a republican but not a rabid one, one of the few I know who is reasonable. I know I will be spending way too much time looking at the posts on this team!
