The world is full of hypocrites ... regardless of party affiliation, religion, country, or profession. But it is also filled with principled people ... they just don't make interesting news to the media.

Well, politicians on both sides have been getting in this sort of trouble a lot lately. I wonder if everyone drawn to politics is so full of hubris that they think they can do as they please in personal matters.

It is worse when Republicans play around because they are the self-righteous party that claims to represent "family values" and "values voters."

I agree, and yet they seem to be pretty good at breaking their own rules, don't they? Affairs, children born out of "wedlock" -all those human things they condemn others for.

I started out conservative Republican but have drifted left.

Anyway, I'm not a Christian but I have read and studied the Bible. When I look at what Jesus said in the New Testament he seems to me like a bleeding heart liberal to me.

I never understood how those who most loudly proclaim their Christianity seem to be the first to argue against helping the old, sick, and poor through social programs.

The Religious Right remind me of the Pharacees. They are far more fond of using the Bible as a rulebook to condemn their fellow men than as an inspiration to love and help them.

Speaking as another liberal Christian (not an oxymoron).....not only does the religious right not have a lock on Christianity...as far as I am concerned, the THUMPERS have a mostly skewed, judgmental and prejudicial take on their "faith".

BTW I am also a liberal capitalist....also not an oxymoron.

Actually, it's the conservatives who seem to think "Christian" is reserved for a card-carrying member of the righteous right - and unfortunately those bible thumping zealots become the standard by which Christianity and Christians are defined and judged.

Judge not, less thee be judged. (Gees, I'm full of quotes from the bible lately for someone who doesn't go to church...) hmmm

AHHHH --- so that's why I don't see you on our Liberal Atheist Hippie team!
I was raised in a Christian household. Through that and my own studies of religions I know that the real teachings of Christ do have a lot to do with many liberal philosophies.
To each their own.

Sadly, some of our fellow liberals regard the word "Christian" as a perjorative. For me, my Christianity and liberalism go hand in hand.

Welcome! I too am pushing 57, and consider myself to be Christian, although no longer Catholic. Funny, doesn't it seem like being truly "Christ-like" and liberal should logically go hand in hand?

I've been hanging around Spark for a while now, but finally decided I wanted to be as liberal here as I am elsewhere. I've been a Democrat, and a Christian, since I was born nearly 57 years ago. My Dad was active in local politics in a very Republican city, and my brother and I started politicking , and wish very much that I had saved the $40 paychecks I got from the McGovern campaign. More recently, I volunteered from home for the Obama campaign. I'm glad to be here.
