Don't feel bad. I'm a Catholic, and a priest not too far from me said that Catholics who voted for Obama should confess their "sin!" Mercifully, his bishop quickly overrode him.

Thanks for the welcomes!

I love to throw people off. I attend a very conservative church and during the elections, it just astounded people that I could go to church and STILL vote for Obama! I think they're so used to pairing "godless" with "liberal" that they just don't know what to make of someone like me! ;-D

But it is nice to have a chance to talk to other liberals. I look forward to digging in here!

Welcome to our team. I spend the winter in Texas and boy, is it conservative. So I can relate. This is a great team.

That is too bad. It's hard fathom someone basing such an important decision on race. You know it happens but it isn't right.

In some areas I believe we're seeing some liberal turning, but honestly, the election results were pretty similar to those in '04. I believe that if (then) Sen. Clinton had won the nomination, she may have won WV. Particularly in the southern part of the state, there is still an awful lot of racism that exists.

Liberal from WV here. Absolutely thrilled with the change in administration. Though I was disappointed in the 2000 election, I was willing to give Bush a chance. That he was re-elected in '04 was one of the most depressing events I've experience. I'm so thankful that America wised up a bit in the past couple of years and ousted those fools!

WELCOME ABOARD JO -
I can relate to political depression, I started packing on the pounds when Gore got robbed of the Presidency. I'll freely admit I used it as an excuse, but damn --- I felt a disturbance in the force like I'd never felt before ---- and I lived through the Nixon crapola!
I look forward to hearing the points of view from another political junkie. This is an open place to express yourself without fear.

Josephine,

It was a very depressing time after Kerry lost. And most of what we feared came true, unfortunately. I am glad the last eight painful years are over, even though President Obama has so much to do, so much to repair.

Here's to a positive weight loss agenda!

I don't really need another team here at Spark, but I saw this on someone's blog and couldn't help myself. Since I am a big time political junkie. And an avid Daily Kos reader/commentor.

Couldn't believe there would be someplace where I could be free with my feelings on things political.

I retired in 1999 at an all time high weight wise, 205+ pounds. I slowly lost down to a goal weight, took three years. Managed to hold that weight for several years, more or less. I doubt if many could understand this, but I started gaining right after Kerry lost, I was so depressed.

Last year was also a roller coaster ride. My mother's health failed and we had to put her in a nursing home. I was crazy over the election. Didn't handle stress of either very well and have now gained about half of my pounds back.

So I'm back her at Spark, never really being very active the first time.

Hope to get to know you all a little.

Jo

Welcome, Annie! I couldn't believe Virginia actually voted blue this time. I don't think that's happened since before the Civil War, has it?

Thank you so much, LadyIrish, for the complimentary post.

Today, I am sore not only due to the fall in the barometer affecting the arthritis, but I had a bit more of a challenging workout, for me, last night.
LOL

It's not a bad hurt, it is more of a "good" hurt.

Hi, there!!

So, I joined this team with a suitcase full of ignorance and a history of apathy towards politics.

But this past election, I voted. For the first time ever(I'm 29 in May). I voted Obama because, despite the teachings of the church that I grew up in (Catholic), despite the state that I'm from (Texas), despite my work environment (mostly conservative Republicans), I felt deep down that Obama would make careful, well-informed decisions, no matter which party he belongs to.

And, seriously? The guy has an aura of hope surrounding him. I know he's only human, and he WILL make mistakes - but this is a very exciting time, and I'm really proud of our country now.

So, I'll probably be a lurker for awhile, as I'm a little self-conscious about speaking up about political topics. But if you need a buddy or motivation, I'm your woman! :)

Welcome, Addyfaith!

Yeah, tell me about it. I live in the bluest part of one of the bluest states in the Union -- Northern California -- and still find myself working in an office that's a little puddle of red (You're not voting for him? He's a Muslim!). I have to say, though, that I haven't run into a lot of trouble here on Spark, even though running up to the Inauguration both my background and profile image were Obama motifs.

I live near Chicago but, in what use to be a very Republican county. Proud to say over 50% went to Obama. I have a cousin from here who lives in Houston and she runs into the same problem of when do you open your mouth? During this election, she said a lot more than she ever has because there was so much at stake. I too, have noticed a lot of overtly conservative talk and some of it just doen't make sense. I love a good intelligent debate....makes life interesting but I don't like the one sided throwing of talking points. I want to yell.....THINK FOR YOURSELF! (sometimes I do) emoticon

HELLO NJ TO AZ,

I used to live on a military post in Germany, when I was married to a military man. And I understand how difficult it can be to be Liberal in such a setting. People often tried to change my mind about my beliefs. I didn't ask for their opinion, but they offered nonetheless. I hid out a bit from it all, just to get through. (But I can't recommend that.) If I had it to do over, I'd be more myself. I got a little lost trying to "get along."

Nice to meet you,

Audrey

HELLO PROUD BLUE LIBERALS,

I'm new to this team, but I've been around spark for a few months now. I'm a Liberal Democrat from Hawaii, fierce Obama supporter after the Democratic Convention (supported Clinton before that, which wasn't easy in Hawaii) and I would love to "get together" with other Liberals on this site. Most of the people I meet here at spark are very conservative. And while that's OK with me, I can't talk about a lot of stuff because it would offend them and I don't want that. I'm glad to be here.

HAPPY SUNDAY ALL,

Audrey

Hi! I'm new to the team but have been sparking for a few months now... I'm originally from NJ, but moved out to a *very* conservative/military town in AZ about 4 years ago. Needless to say, I'm the minority here! :)

Good to hear some sanity. I'm from Illinois...When that slimeball Blago ran the last time I wrote in Paul Vallas (former Supt. of Chicago Public Schools -now New Orleans Supt.) He would have made a great Gov.

I have followed Obama's political career since he ran for State Senator. He managed to steer a path clear of the machine/combine politics. It ain't easy. I'm proud he came to Illinois and even more proud that we came together all across the USA to elect Barack Obama to lead our country. emoticon

Welcome, Deborah! Yes, I had a great laugh when Florida went to Obama after its Supreme Court helped saddle us with The Shrub.

Hi! I'm Deborah and I'm one of the five women that turned Florida blue. Or at least that's what we like to think. LOL

I was a team leader for the campaign. I have been a proud liberal ever since my college years back in the 60's!

Hello, Armymom!

Like you (and, I suspect, this entire team), I'm counting the nanoseconds until The Shrub is out and Obama is in.

(((((Kiwi))))), I'm a Californian myself. The state of our state is truly grim, isn't it? I hope things work out for you.

I've never really figured this one out. We live in possibly the bluest state in the Union -- where did we get this weird propensity for electing Republican governors?

Hello again! I'm seeing so many familiar posters here, and it's always great to feel comfortable unveiling our political frustrations in the company of friends. I've really enjoyed being a part of this team!
As for me, I come from a line of union organizers. My departed grandfather has a union hall named for him in Long Beach, Ca. I was raised in a very liberal, some wold probably say extremely left, household and with no question registered as a democrat as soon as I hit 18. I door to door campaigned for Kerry when I was 5-7 months pregnant with my daughter while we were stationed in Missouri. This past election living in Alaska was really amusing, the state rallied as soon as Palin accepted her nomination but flickered out quickly. Although I only did phone banking this year, I really wish I could've done more.

Keep up the fantastic work folks. It's a pleasure being on this team with you.
PS 35 days until inauguration, finally!

Hiya..I'm a returning spark person, ecstatic and hopeful now that Obama has won the election. A job seeker, I have worked mostly in civil service jobs in the past.....the looming prospect of my home state, California, running out of cash soon is making my knees wobble about my immediate employment future. There may be a layoff of over 200,000 state workers very soon. Scary times we're living in, but at least a decent, intelligent and excellent public servant is going to be our next President. I am quite happy about that.

Great cartoon! I don't know if I ever did introduce myself, so for those who don't know me:

I'm an expatriate living in Denmark. I've been here 21 years. I was more of a mainstream Democrat until I moved here. (Though I was raised in a very conservative home - my mother was an honesttogod card carrying member of the John Birch Society. sigh. We didn't discuss politics or religion or abortion - but loved each other dearly luckily and much else to talk about!) Living in a real live social democracy with a national health system and a real social net opened my eyes. I started as a Social Democrat - over here - and have moved to the left and pretty much vote Socialist now. Ooh, is THAT a dirty word in the US. STILL! McCarthy did his job well.

I don't discuss politics in my other regular spark teams - but I did get passionately involved in political discussions during the campaign in the SparkCafe. It was the only way I could do anything for Obama from all the way over here. It was very interesting to try to "debate" with the conservatives. They don't like to debate and if you disagree with them they start crying "you're taking away my freedom of speech." I needed an icon for tearing my hair out regularly.

Anyway - that's me in a little tiny nutshell. I proudly voted for Obama by absentee ballot from the deep blue state of Oregon, and I still get chills when I see pictures of that crowd for Obama in Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon, on that gorgeous day in May 2008. My heart swells with pride. Can't help it.

Good one! LOL...

LadyIriish - thanks for being the team leader and for sharing this cartoon.

I agree with Emma - it's nice to have a place to be political - I avoid this on other teams as I know the focus of the Spark People site is on weight loss and health, not politics.

I think I've introduced myself - but if not - I'm a liefelong democrat and have moved further to the left over the past 10 - 15 years as I see the impact that poor social policy and the lack of health insurance for all has had on our citizens, especially the most vulnerable - children, people with disabilities and frail elders. I'm looking forward with hope for the first time in a long time. Maizey

Especially lately... Illinois is totally sublime to ridicules. It sounds like the governor might be a bit mentally ill. I hope they can put him somewhere safe and soon before he does it again.

I must say, i really appreciate this group. I don't mention Politics much on spark. But here. i can be myself!

Never knew we were missing a leader. I'm from Illinois. Our state politicians go from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Well, hey, I'm thrilled to see we have a leader again. Not that we've needed one,as we seem to do just fine being Proud Blue Liberals without one - but it's great you've become a leader!
