Yeh, it was pretty weird growing up. Dad's parents were devout Apostolics and my mom and maternal grandparents were devout Baptists. Both of my grandpa's were born on Christmas Day and they lived across the street from each other all their lives. Both grandmas were Sunday school teachers for 40+ years. We didn't talk a lot about dad being an atheist. I'm not even sure how old I was before the subject came up. He just was matter of fact about it. I was really surprised when he converted too. I always assumed that he would go to Hell. LOL.

My father was an atheist too until he was converted to Catholicism in 1998. But he was always a Democrat. I'm not much of a Bible thumper but I am one of those Shanty Irish Bastards your dad loves to hate. And I'm proud of it. LOL.

Not sure it is officially off or his posturing will make it happen. He didn't feel he needed to be there a day or so ago. Why does he feel his presence is so vital now? Wants to make the obvious debate winner look bad if he also doesn't agree with the postponement.

Maybe the "mainstream" is diverting a bit? Hopefully Friday's Debate will help so encourage everyone to watch no matter who their professed candidate is.

In the meantime, here is more news you can throw at folks thinking McCain knows what is going on in this "stable economy" he has talked about and has only recently somewhat changed his tune, due to mounting evidence he has NO CLUE.

emoticon I live in GA, so I know how hard it can be to go against the mainstream. My mother has told me she is voting for McCain because Obama is Muslim. When I told her he is not, she said "well, his friends are". How do you argue against that? Of course, I tried! LOL!! However, my son (he's 17) tells me that almost everyone he knows is for Obama. And I work at a university where I'd say 80%-90% of the people ~ students, staff & faculty ~ are for Obama. I am staying optimistic!

Welcome! I also love this team--it comforts me when it seems the world is nuts.

I found this team via the 'I'm for Obama' team. It is like plunging into a refreshing pool of cool water on a very hot day, or curling up in front of the wood stove on a frigid winter day. I can't decide--refreshing or comforting? Maybe both!

I grew up in a hyper-conservative home--my father really should be living on a compound in Montana. I love him dearly and we finally have come to a place where we just do not discuss politics. My mother whispered to me more than once that she and my father always 'canceled out' each others' vote. On the other hand, he is also a raving atheist. So being conservative and being religious have never been firmly linked in my mind. He rails against 'bible thumpers (his words) but has only voted Republican since he could vote. We grew up with him ranting about the Kennedy's as 'shanty Irish bastards (once again, his words) and was amazed and grateful that when I left home I realized that he really is an odd duck and it is possible for rational thought in politics. Although I feel like there has been a dearth of rational thought in politics over the past 8 years. I was completely gob-smacked when Bush 'won' the first time--we call him the 'president select' in our house--and flabbergasted when he 'won' the second time. I am losing faith in our collective ability to think and act rationally when it comes to politics and politicians.

I am also stunned at what my daughter tells me are the views of most of her peers in high school on the current presidential election. Most people she talks to about politics are for McCain/ Palin because of all kinds of scurrilous information which has gotten out there and is being taken seriously. The most common reasons are: Palin is a strong female role model and we should vote for her. No one will vote for a black man, so don't vote for Obama. Obama is a muslim and therefore a terrorist. Obama does not have enough experience to be president.
So, we scan the media and internet for talking points for her to use in response to what we perceive as nonsense. I know I am going to find all kinds of great information here!
