Wheat isn't the only food that we get carbs from. It's the starchy carbs like wheat (and other grains) and potatoes that raise blood sugar. Yes, diabetics certainly need carbs but they can get plenty from fruits and vegetables which will supply the body with many other needed nutrients to help the body heal itself. Wheat, even whole wheat cannot compete nutritionally with things like kale, asparagus, broccoli, apples, leafy lettuces, avocado, chard, etc. The list of foods that are truly needed to be healthy goes on and on and really, wheat just can't stand up to it. Eggs will give most of what wheat has and what it doesn't have that wheat has can be had through the above listed produce.

A perfect breakfast would be cooked kale (or any dark green leafy veggie) and eggs. I would throw in a side of bacon with that but a lot of people are still shy of the stuff because they still believe that it is bad for them...which it isn't. But that's another story. People who have started eating this way cold turkey (which isn't easy to do for most) Have cured themselves of type 2 diabetes in a couple of weeks. This is what I have read anyway and in more than just one or two places.

Let's get healthy and stay healthy!!

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Welcome! One of my friends got the same diagnosis. His wife started the whole family on Tosca Reno's Clean Eating. He lost about 40 pounds and is also off medications.

Before you start eliminating food groups from your diet, get a referral to a registered dietician who specializes in diabetes. Your doctor should provide it.

A friend of mine was diagnosed with Type II diabetes several years ago in her mid-50s. She changed her diet following the dietician's recommendations, and learned how to test her blood sugar. She was able to go off medication in a short time after losing 40 pounds. She did not eliminate whole grains from her diet. As a matter of fact, diabetics need a certain amount of carbs - surprisingly more than a person would get following an Atkins-like eating plan.

I agree. Delete grain (at least most of it) from your diet.

WELCOME, DCRAWFORD
You have come to a very good place. You have made the wise choice. I have a constant motto that I say all the time: Never take a drug to combat a problem that can be solved by making new life style choices. There are MANY people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have cured themselves in only a few weeks--no kidding!

I have one little piece of advice to get you headed in the right direction. Move seriously towards eliminating all grains and refined sugars from your diet. On this team you will get many ideas on how that is working for people. Not everyone is ready or willing to give up grains as they have been a staple in our diet for a very long time. But it can be done. I am almost grain free only treating myself on the weekend with some whole grain bread.

You might also like to join the Paleo Diet team where the members are sharing recipes and ideas on what to cook and eat when working on not using grains. You don't have to commit to going full Paleo to get a lot from the team.
