I'm on another great team here on SP called "Organic Gardeners". It's pretty active, esp. in the Spring and Summer. Join us!

Oh goody. Time to break out my Organic Garden for Dummies book. I am not sure where I'm going to find the time to raise a garden though. We'll see.

Definitely start to plan now for a garden this summer. That will save you $ on fruits and veggies, for sure. We have had one the past two years, and although not everything produces the way we would like, we have gotten enough to make a difference, and we have learned a lot, too!
Also, kepp your eyes open for sales, and focus on buying organic on tings that are more likely to be filled with pesticides, etc. Here is a link to a list that will tell you:
www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php
Download the guide and print out a copy to take to the grocery store!

I agree with all of you. I find it very confusing and can be very expensive. I do eat alot of fresh fruits and veggies. A little frozen and can veggies. I try to cook more meals at home. But all I can do is just try my best.

Yes, I understand about teenagers - my oldest will be 15 in 2 weeks and my youngest is well into puberty and he is 13 - they can eat you out of house and home!!! And when the friends are over - I get it!

I can't do organic either. We lost some of our salary last year due to the economy so we really watch how we spend. My teenagers (and their friends) are eating more and more. I'm thinking we may do a garden this year. It's alot of work but I think it may be worth it.

I agree - it should be simple. I think sometimes I read to many things and I get confused. I have slowed down on what I was reading because of the holidays so that was probably good.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

It's really too bad about the canned tomatoes. It's not the tomatoes that are bad for you... it's the cans themselves. ANI posted a link to the EDEN foods website. I guess their cans are OK.

Anyhow, it can be confusing... but if you try to think of it like this:

Eating clean food SHOULD be simple. It is food that is simply FOOD. Unprocessed (or minimally processed). Complex carbs, fruits and veggies and lean protein and dairy. I don't think it really gets any simpler than that. Don't sweat too many details at first... you'll get the hang of it!

I use lots of fresh fruits and veggies and then have some frozen on hand. The frozen have most of their nutrients still intact but the canned are (I think ) processed some and usually have a ton of salt.

Although, I don't buy everything organic though - it would kill my groceries budget if I did. How does everyone shop organic without breaking the bank - especially for a family?

I do try and use fresh veggies and fruits whenever I can. If I need to I will buy frozen before canned - not sure why - just because I think it would be healthier. I started using honey instead of sugar in my tea. I'm having a tough time with my red meats. How the heck do I know what they were fed? lol I don't eat alot of red meat anyway. I think potatoes were on that list as well. I can't imagine not eating them but I am eating more sweet potatoes although I don't understand why - just because I read I should. Just some oddball things I've thought of - no, I just can't give up my Reese's yet either - maybe one day......

Hi STEPHANIE0904

I also am pretty new at clean eating and it can be confusing. I really haven't read any books yet on the subject although I do subscribe to Clean Eating magazine.

We usually cook from scratch and we bring our lunches to work. So, most of the foods we eat are cooked or eaten from their original state.

Its when it comes to using things like canned tomatoes (not good - on 7 foods to avoid) or breads.... that I get confused too.

Looking to see other responses.

great job on the baby steps. I feel you! It does seems like there is always something we shouldn't be eating for some reason or another. Do what you think is best for you with the information you've been given :) That's what I try to do.

Hi everyone - I joined SP back in March and Clean Eats maybe a month ago because I've decided I wanted to make my diet more clean. This is my first post here because I really am having a tough time figuring this all out. I've been reading and I think everytime I turn around there's something else I should not be eating!?!? Today's post of 7 Foods Not TO Eat (or something similar) just adds to my confusion. I am starting out taking baby steps and I'll keep at it. I'm looking forward to feeling healthier by eating clean.
