I must admit most of my meals are way over this budget...

I've started a thread for lunch and dinner ideas.

Of course the old standbys Peanut butter and jelly and egg salad sandwiches are good starters for lunch.

That is really tough! I think milk alone is going to take about a third of that.

The dogs will have to eat dry dog food of course.

It really would be good if you could find somewhere else to trim the budget so you could have a bit more for food...

We'll have to see what we can come up with for 50 cent meals. (No snacks!! - unless we can cut some from a meal and add a snack.)

Oatmeal is really good and cheap.
Making your own bread is a really good way to save money.

Breakfast could be:
Oatmeal, milk, and a piece of fruit
Or
Two eggs, toast, and a fruit
Or
Peanut butter on toast and fruit.

You want to feed 5 people and 3 dogs on $50 a week?

You want to get 105 meals for people plus dog food?

I have no tips at the moment. The husband and I have just been playing it by ear. We just shop for whatever we need for the week. The bill usually hovers around $100 or so.

I have been trying to get more of the "filling" yet healthy type foods, such as oatmeal, nuts, beans, yogurt, etc.

Ooh I just thought of a tip. If you like the greek fage yogurt, you can make a cheaper version. I don't think the nutrition content is the same, but it tastes the same to me. I take any low fat yogurt and strain over a coffee filter inside a colander overnight and then scoop back into the container and voila!

Hey everyone!! I am trying to turn a new leaf this year by working out and eating healthy regularly.

With the bad economy it's really hard for me to stay on track with healthy eating. It always seems as if the un-healthy foods are so much cheaper and easier to buy/prepare.

Hopefully I will be able to pick up an abundance of tips and be able to eat healthier on a tight budget!
